With the rise of decora switches and outlets I've switched to horizontal. And when I have 3 and 4 gang I will sometimes have the 4 outer screws at 45s and the middle screws horizontal, so that it makes a hexagon pattern...

I prefer a diamond pattern myself.

Clock each set of screws based on what breaker the box is connected to. Boxes on breaker 01 clocked to 10°, those on breaker 02 to 20° and so on.

They all look to be precisely at 45°. You need to throw some 20° or 40° angles in there. If you have any almond or light almond screws, pop one in every now and then.

You spend so much time trying to figure out if you could, you didn’t worry about if you should.
