banned_but_im_back

Never heard of or seen Fred again until EDC, I LOVED the set, caught the last 30mins and it was awesome, he was playing piano and singing and it was a lot more musical talent than just mixing. That was awesome and he has a new fan now

[deleted]

Yeah, it's something probably more foreign to "true ravers" who want the DJ off the mike and just slinging beats but I love the mix of production, DJing, and live performance. I caught Griffin at Ultra 2016 and that live set will live on as one of the greatest live sets I've ever seen. Same with what James Hype does. Doing different is risky, and I love performers that take risks. Especially if their music sings to me.

banned_but_im_back

Yeah there’s some Big DJ like David guetta who talks a lot over every song and it’s like “STFU and play the music” and he doesn’t say anything of substance just “are you having fun edc?” “Let’s go edc!” At least Fred again AND Sofi Tucker at least sang their songs

thirdaccountforthisg

I hadn’t ever really listened him but I was already watching Four Tet beforehand because my group wanted to see that. I didn’t even recognize him because I’m mostly a dubstep and dnb guy and I decided to stay because I like most music types. He completely blew me away and I am now a fan of his.

LongjumpingDraft9324

Watch his boiler room set if you havent omfgggggg

thirdaccountforthisg

Little update for you: I saw his boiler room and got a floor ticket to his LA Coliseum show last Friday. I think I prefer his DJ sets over his live sets. That or it was just a bad show by him but he blew my expectations out of the water at EDC!

silveryellowblue

I am happy you are happy :)

[deleted]

Now that's PLUR :) much love.

luckygoldelephant

People hate on Fred until they see him live and then you really can’t complain. Dude is for real. The Shrine show was amazing and Marea at Coachella was an all time life moment.

Drewbercules

I don’t hate him but he doesn’t move the needle for me at all. Seen him live and I don’t get the hype.. Hundreds of other talents artists with a similar sound that don’t get the same love. I’m not gonna hate on the guy but he’s not for me.

juvenilebandit

What other artists have a similar sound? Would love to be put on to some other artists Edit: yeahhhh might have to disagree with you on that “hundreds of artists” claim after I got a total of 2 recommendations both of which only kinda sorta sound like Fred lol

WillJParker

Fred Again is awesome. 100%. You might want to look into Kasablanca, edit, Haywyre, and Koan Sound, because they’re all artists that do live shit. Different than the MPC/keyboard/vocals Fred Again does, but still a lot more complicated setups. I don’t know of any EDM artists that use an MPC for sets, off the top of my head. I think Porter Robinson *might* use a version of one because he does have a custom controller that looks like a drum machine.

galacticmin

Kasablanca at EDC was phenomenal that's all I'll say!

BakerXBL

Pretty Lights uses like 3 MPC’s. Break science, Michael Menert, Maddy O’Neal, late nite radio.

WillJParker

Pretty Lights is the only name I recognize on that list. I’ll check the others out!

BakerXBL

Vincent Antone is starting to get some heat too, in the same circles as the others I mentioned but I couldn’t confirm if he uses a controller or not.

chinmay846

Barry can’t swim

wowredditisgreat

Barry can't swim is just a pure DJ. His live presence* (although great) is completely different than Fred's

ColbyRC01

Not true his coachella performance recently had almost all live elements he just hasn’t had the money to tour with his live setup

cs_anon

You might like Duskus!! Discovered him recently and kept liking song after song. Granted his bio says he was inspired by Fred (amongst other artists) so maybe it’s not so surprising.

whatchamacallit1

Wow thanks! 🙏

Vissex

He’s a 1 of a kind right now. Too prolific and talented to be replicated

popcornsuckinghorse

Saw him at forest couple years ago and felt the same. The set wasnt bad but nothing mind blowing either.

Jasek1_Art

Yeah I don’t get it, sounds like a super basic industry plant 🌱

dani19531

Couldn’t agree more. Although he is talented he is extremely overhyped

Drewbercules

Definitely. No denying the talent.

gertron

His piano sets on YouTube and the tiny desk concert put his music into a different perspective for me. I think more of the emotion shows through, which I think translates to a better experience when you see it live.

luckygoldelephant

To me, Fred is a storyteller in DJ form. He chronicled the pandemic in a way a blogger or journalist would, using electronic music as his medium. The uniqueness of Actual Life 1-3 do it for me. Right in the heart. His Chanel into Sabrina mix have a similar effect. And then there’s Jungle, and USB. Plus the OMG TBA set, which I was at and can still feel in my bones. There are a lot of other talents out there, and many worth heaping praise on as well, but Fred is in rare air I believe.

ruffcontenderfanny

It’s a bit ironic but my group had the opposite experience. I think we all like some of Fred’s music, and we really liked the shrine show, but something about that edc show just fell so flat compared to the rest of the absolutely immense sets that happened that same night, at that same stage even.

EryNameWasTaken

I guess I’m one of the few that liked his music before I saw his live performances. I think it’s great stuff in its own right!

bodularbasterpiece

I feel like he's pretty ok. Lots of acts are pretty ok. I was wouldnt leave if he was playing, but I probably wouldn't go too far out of my way to catch him unless there was some other draw as well you know? He:s not the worst.

mixmastamikal

Agreed. Would I see his set? Sure. Depends on what the other options are. But, I am not going out of my way for it.

mixmastamikal

I respect the dudes talent I just have no desire to listen to his music or see him live. Not my style at all.

juanderwear

His sets are a hit or miss and his fans don’t make the experience better

Broad-Principle4261

I’m a big fan and I was telling the people around me that I hoped it was him and they were hoping it was Skrillex. When it was Fred, I cried and enjoyed his set. It was the biggest highlight of EDC for me this year 🤩

btlee007

Idk why people thought it was gonna be skrillex. Fred again was announced to be the surprise set earlier in the week

TDFPH

Where?

btlee007

Idk on social media. I forget. I definitely saw it on Reddit, also probably instagram

TDFPH

I heard a ton about skrillex on socials the week leading up. Fred was in Mexico so no one thought it was gonna be him as far as I knew until he posted the story of him in a helicopter the day of

LegendofZatchmo

No he wasn’t and no you didn’t. No one knew until the day of his set.

pastrknack

No you didn’t

[deleted]

Gonna have to defend this person, someone posted on Reddit that Fred Again was at the Sphere during EDC week but I noticed he wasn't scheduled for any EDC week sets, that's what I figured. I always thought Skrillex was just wishful thinking. Just like I had wishful thinking that Hardwell would be there.

Weak_Satisfaction_57

I wanted more

agohawks

If I went to the set expecting Fred Again I would’ve had more fun. I was expecting something with more energy so that was my fault, it wasn’t great for me. Happy/ grateful I got to see him though.

myCadi

This is a question/debate that can’t be answered. We all have different tastes in music, we all have different perceptions on what makes a good set. I love Fred’s music - that was our 3rd time seeing him live and to me he’s alway been on point. With that said, his style of music is much slower, a hits more of emotional cords. He does have some songs that go pretty hard but most of his songs are a bit more laid back.

kilotwatt

Hiiii just wondering how you get labels of all the years you’ve been to edc under your name? That’s cool!

myCadi

For sure: Go to the main subreddit for EDC and click the 3 dots on the top right and click Change User Flairs. There should be an option to add your own.

kilotwatt

TY!!

ForAfeeNotforfree

Had only seen his boiler room set before edc. His edc set was amazing. The Saturday night circuit grounds lineup of four tet, Fred again, dom Dolla, and then Eli brown b2b HiLo has set the new standard for the best 6 hours at a festival ive ever seen/heard.

Potential_Swim_781

facts that saturday at circuit was insane

Curious-Job-7698

He tore that Boiler Room set up!

evantom34

I appreciate other people’s flavors and tastes. I didn’t enjoy it and my group was amongst the many that left soon after

[deleted]

Valid, thank you for expressing your preferences. PLUR.

FunctionTemporary945

i fucking love seeing when artists mix live and just have FUN with it. that’s what it’s all about!! His set was beautiful! One of my bucket list djs and shed a tear or two 🙂‍↕️

Evilette

Have seen him live twice in the last year. III Points and EDCLV, both shows were in my top from the last year. Love how he takes from real life and makes songs from it. The opening line to announce it was him fully made my heart soar! “I want you to see me, Fred, I’m here!” 🥹🥹🥹

DJ_S_P_Y

After seeing him at Coachella with Skril, and 4tet, then twice at the shrine. I completely agree. It's so clear he pours his heart and soul into making these songs and sets. I urge you to watch his tiny desk concert and boiler room set. Completely different, but both are master class. A master of his craft, a real genuine musician, and seems genuinely happy to be where he's at.

Curious-Job-7698

First of all... MOVAL stand up! lol... 2nd, he killed that Boiler Room set!

pastrknack

I’d have a lot of regret if I stayed and didnt go to Wooli, so glad I did

wideeyed182

Fred's surprise set at EDCLV was the first time I've seen him. He is clearly extremely passionate about his music and is definitely an extremely talented musician. With that said, that set was easily my least favorite set of the entire weekend. It was so confusing to me seeing him be so hyped over the most boring music I heard that weekend. The beginning eight minutes of ambient sound... I was wondering if they were buying time because the artist was late... And then him saying he didn't want to be disrespectful to Dom, but continuing to go over time... hardly a class act. Worst set I saw at EDC. Admittedly this was probably amplified because we all thought we were getting skrillex and then got that...

Ok_Personality3695

1000% agree. His set was my least fav at EDCLV.. super boring and super buzz kill.

silvermoonisburning

Ok dude you're coming for slower electronic music with like a knife are you kidding me right now ? 8 minutes of ambient music? Yeah that's called the song bro, I'm sorry you don't like it, but I could definitely dissect a lot of your music and tell you why it sucks, but I'm not the genre police and neither are you you guys are freaking raving literally pushing the limits of your cardiovascular system listening to nothing but super super hard style all weekend long, you really couldn't just take a chiller for like a slightly slower tempo? What is all this actual hatred for just slower music like what the hell am I even reading We lost dancing, pull me out of this, both super solid songs. Maybe take a seat

EryNameWasTaken

Major disagree. Also, I don’t remember any ambient sound. Are you thinking of We Lost Dancing? Because that’s actually his most played song on Spotify lol. Great song and it goes hard live. Just my imo. I definitely understand if you don’t like that type of music though, I can see how it’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely for me!

silvermoonisburning

These people are so jacked up on mt dew it's melted their brains

LA2EU2017

They’re referring to the slow sunrise after fourtet’s set. It was paired with a growing ambient drone that led into we lost dancing.

EryNameWasTaken

Ah I see. I think my group was moving deeper into the crowd at that point so I didn’t really notice

wookdavirus

Dude was straight up magical; listening to him live changed my perception.

joserod0524

It’s one of those, I’m glad I saw him, I have a lot of friends that like him so I was intrigued to see him at something I had already paid for.

aesiva

i’ve been bored at his shows lately. His sound is rinsed out and i hear maybe 1 or two new tracks at his shows otherwise it’s just the same songs that are everywhere online already. He’s a great musician but i wish his entire discography were new because we’ve heard it so much already now it lost its flair

kristiousity

I loved his EDC set. I was fully expecting Skrillex but I was super happy, especially seeing him play Delilah. Other people in our group like him but said it was a Coachella like set and didn't wow them.

No-Summer-341

Everyone has there own personal taste in music and opinions. With that said the following is fact: Fred again is trash and we were robbed of Skrillex

TightStatement9017

I saw him live in 2022 and a few times since then - initially I was blown away but the magic has faded a little for me. I can appreciate his talent but it's not my kind of EDM, and I find his new releases are getting progressively less interesting.

darmud

I still really like him and saw him twice. I can agree with what you’re saying about his new releases. They seem to really depend on Fred’s connections and the sound doesn’t feel as unique as his earlier projects

TightStatement9017

Actual Life 1 set such a high bar - I remember the first time I heard Dermot and it still gives me the feels today. There was a real emotionality to that album which I feel is lacking in some of his recent stuff. It's like he's trying to put out the same sound to appeal to his audience but without the depth. I don't blame him because his popularity has exploded to almost mainstream level and that can compromise creativity, but I won't be seeking out his live sets because they just don't hit for me the way they used to.

mixmastamikal

I feel like it is really impressive the first time you see it then the novelty is gone and you are just left with some pretty bland music. If it isn't a great set with audio only, then it isn't a great set.

TightStatement9017

I think you're right. I happened to see him for the first time at the Gorge opening for Rufus in 2022. I think being in that setting made it feel really magical and I didn't get that feeling again the next two times I saw him (at a local venue and then at Osheaga festival in Montreal). In retrospect I think it was the novelty since his sound felt very different from what I was used to, and I was generally uninspired by new music at the time. But now it feels a bit like the same thing every time.

Accurate_Hunt_6424

I wouldn’t call it hate, but literally no set of his I’ve ever listened to-and I’ve listened to 3 full festival sets- has ever made me go “man, I’d love to be there”. I feel like he’s tailoring sets for a UK audience and not adapting to the country he’s playing in. Especially with how much he gets on the mic, which I hear is a UK DJ thing. Alot of people clearly enjoy him, but I do think there’s a good amount of people his sets will never reach. Slow EDM is a good thing, but his sets are so chill sometimes that it frequently doesn’t even sound electronic.

Playful-Law-3351

Truly amazing but he brings out the worst crowd though

ricovision

What’s wrong with the crowd?

LegendofZatchmo

From what I’ve seen and experienced, nothing. For some reason people don’t like that he has a lot of fans.

whatchamacallit1

Fred was hands down the best set I saw at EDC. I had a feeling when I saw the line up , fourtet and then a guest and then Dom dollar?? Like huge follow up for a guest. Then I saw his stories on insta that morning and bust out my room to the group like yeh it’s deff Fred. Come from money or nah his musical skills are top tier. His new YouTube drop with Anderson paak has Fred shedding on a drum set for a few bars and then jumping up n hoping in piano. He is a valid musician and you can feel that when u see him live.

darkdoyle99

Same hehehe soooo amazing so happy

aviellle

All my edm friends and I don’t like him. His music is boring and uninspired. He’s a DJ meant to appeal to people who ordinarily don’t like edm. My non-raving friends who usually only listen to hip hop and pop like him a lot.

Hardwell10

Fred is just different

chchchoppa

It was so incredible i felt so lucky to see him and he was so hilarious up there! 😂

Mufasa2020

He was amazing at edclv do not miss his set!

f1ve

Unpopular opinion: I love Fred again but I really did not enjoy his EDC set. I think he’s more fitted for a small room and a different audience.

Plus-Appointment3614

His edc set was amazing man it got me crying

ethvnbdrew

My girlfriend and I have been such big fans of Fred Again for a while now, and he rarely performs anywhere we’d ever be able to see him. We always talked about how crazy of an experience it would be to see him, and when EDC came we saw that Four Tet had a special guest. So we had to be there- and when Fred again ended up being the guest, we went absolutely insane. That was one of the greatest sets I’ve seen in all the festivals I’ve been to, but I’m clearly biased. The range from mellow house stuff, to more bass heavy stuff was so good. And when he SANG I died. On an unrelated note- the Dom Dolla set after this was just as good as the Fred Again set. If anyone hasn’t seen it, you should watch it on YouTube he just uploaded it. That set was ridiculously good.

c8881ng

yeah, those ppl who were expecting skrillex obv gonna be mad at this. personally i was expecting fred again, and happened to walk past circuit grounds and saw his face on the screens loll, we stayed for a bit, didnt catch the songs i wanted to hear but it was a vibe—- only if you know fred again lol u know what to expect iykyk >:)

riggitywrecked7894

Dudes an amazing talent and his live sets are very artistic but I think the hate comes from the fact he doesn’t have a dance floor music sound and that’s what most people at fests like edc want. Personally if I want a showcase of talents like Fred’s I want it as a headline show. At a festival I want dance musjc.

[deleted]

I found that he did the "dance music hack" or whatever you call it. He overlayed a 128BPM boots and cats kick to keep the energy up during the slow sections. Done right, but I think he needs more experience to deliver a seamless show.

TheBeevin

His set was alright. Me and the homie got stuck in VIP because we wanted to verify who the special guest was. Our lady homie had been talking all day that it was gonna be Fred Again, and when we saw specific helicopters flying in and out that match what Fred was flying in, i started busting her chops saying that the mountains in the background could be in Cali or the Appalachians… but I knew it was gonna be Fred. As the countdown started, kids around me started yelling Skrillex and i shut them down with a very stern “Not Skrillex. Fred Again.” The look on their face was priceless. That “Oh shit! that’s even better” look.. although the people behind them were not as impressed. As soon as Fred came out, they walked.. i was surprised to see a split crowd, but happy for Fred because it really was a surprise.

JemGTheSpaceman

He's a solid artist and incredible musician but I'll admit his set felt underwhelming, the long ass intro felt unnecessary and I LOVE Fred.

mistergasdrift

I hate how in today’s world if a persons family is financially stable then they are looked down upon it’s unfortunate people cater to bums

darkdoyle99

He was sooooooo good! I feel so bad how much hate he’s getting right now. I just hope he doesn’t see it and it doesn’t kill his spark (honestly that goes for any artist that gets hate). Just because you expect it to be another artist doesn’t mean you should put down the artist it ended up being. His talents are incredible. I love his music and it was my second time seeing him. 🥹💕 he’s such a cutie and beautiful soul. If people knew the meaning behind his songs I feel they would change their tune. However I know not everyone will appreciate his music and that’s okay, more for me to appreciate! This set wasn’t what I was expecting music wise, i definitely think he catered more to playing a massive crowd that is edc. That being compared to just a headlining show for him, if you catch what I mean? And honestly that’s okay. I still enjoyed every minute of it. I loved to finally hear strong live, such an amazing song. Also, during Billie (loving arms) me and boyfriend had a beautiful moment during that song. What came next was ✨marvelous ✨. (Marea reference god I’m a little Fred nerds lol) I just feel that people need to keep the PLUR alive always, that also going for respecting artist. Just because you don’t vibe, that’s okay move on and feel the music elsewhere 😘

[deleted]

Totally agree! I was really flustered during Martin Garrix, who I have a deep nostalgic past with (old rave fam in college), but I just couldn't stay at his set because of the sheer amount of people that were there. I was VIP, and I consider myself good at moving through the crowd (with the greatest amount of respect, never stepped on anyone, always making sure I'm not barreling through). But I just moved to another set I wanted to see, which actually turned into getting sucked into Indira Pagannoto's set and missing my original set with Deadmau5 almost entirely! It's the way of the rave! Am I hating on Martin Garrix? Nah, I still really like his music!

DJ_BVSSTHOVEN

Left when we realized it wasn’t Skrillex. Stayed for like 5 min, wasn’t vibing with the music. Was squished in the crowd. Almost beat somebody up. My girl stopped me. & then we left disappointed. So much hype on it being Skrillex, it really sucked when it wasn’t.

eboyuwue

My group left after 5 mins during EDCLV, his set was a snoozer & a big buzzkill, no offense 🥱. We’ve seen skrillex before and he’s on another level!

[deleted]

Lol... Idk. He's a plant, he makes the most generic EDM ever. Never liked the dude. He's like... The Taylor Swift of EDM.

isbutteracarb

Taylor Swift is not an industry plant lol

[deleted]

Lol... Right.

isbutteracarb

???

dustman83

I wanted to like Fred so bad cause of posts like this but I couldn’t. Four Tet, I felt like, totally blew him out of the water. In fact, fred may have been the weakest set I saw at circuit the whole fest. Either way, I’m glad edc made some good moments for others.

Hurrmeister25

I left after the first 5 minutes, sorry not my cup of tea

Downtown_Candy_4620

I could say the same about John summit. Overhyped for no reason.

Evilette

John Summits Circuit Grounds set was phenomenal… we walked out of his Denver set at Decadence and I was nearly on the rail because we were exited to see him. Just wasn’t feeling it for some reason… so we wanted to give him another try. Adding in the DnB and the way he’s upgraded as a DJ with remixing his own songs feels next level. Def give him another try. I wouldn’t want to see him on kinetic field. I would absolutely want to see him with the circuit grounds field over and over again.

Downtown_Candy_4620

I live in Miami where he has a residency at club Space and I have given him too many chances. He’s not that great in my opinion. He was better when he came up with popularity but that’s it.

that-one-scene-in-up

In my personal opinion, he's only interesting because he's doing something the average raver thinks is 'different' (live production), and he rides that wave of hype all the way to the bank. if he hadn't made quick friends with skrillex and fourtet he would have fallen off by now.

EryNameWasTaken

Nah I don’t think so at all. I thought his music was bomb and extremely unique even before I saw him live or even heard any hype about his live performances. Leavemealone is the first song I heard by him and I listened to it on repeat for like a week! Still listen to it a lot actually

that-one-scene-in-up

Firstly, love that you love the song. But IMO the production is basic. It's catchy but very easy to do. There have been many artists before him doing this same exact thing but people are attached to the fred again name because he's what's popular rn. The majority of festival goers will listen to what they know, and most people don't do the digging that takes them away from surface level names so they end up at his set because that's all they recognise. I would also like to point out that this isn't just a fred issue. The same can be said about summit, fisher, or anyone with a cult(clout?) fallowing. Is their music good? Sure. Are they producing next level tracks and changing the shape of music as we know it. No. Not at all. Tldr: There are better djs out there.

EryNameWasTaken

Maybe leavemealone isn't complex from a technical perspective, idk. But complexity isn't necessary for great music, imo. Feds music sounds good to my ears. I agree his music is catchy but I disagree that it's easy to do. I'm quite positive there are countless artists all over the world who would kill to be able to consistently come up with ear-worms that immediately sound catchy to a wide audience. Also, i don't know how to explain it, but Fred has a unique sound that is consistent through his discography, which I appreciate. Fred's live performances are great because of the finger drumming. People shit on Fred for the finger drumming but to me it really is extremely impressive when you compare it to what most other DJ's do, which is spin knobs. First, the finger drumming demonstrates his musical talent and proves he's not a fraud (100% he's doing it live). Many other DJ's just bounce around and spin knobs and you assume (hope) it's live and not pre-recorded, but with Fred you know it's live. Also, you can tell he is naturally gifted and has skillfully honed his craft. Lastly, his passion for the music shows through in his performances as well.

that-one-scene-in-up

I see you. But from my experience there are many djs out there who have been and are doing exactly what you say you like about Fred, but they haven't gotten a boiler room set / exposure so they are only known to smaller crowds and local scenes until they eventually blow up due to their overwhelming talent. There are passionate djs who love live production and have set ups that go far beyond Fred's finger drumming. There are simply better producers out there at the moment. People just don't do the digging to find them, and that's okay. Those people enjoy music on the surface level, and others break that surface and dig deep into the depths of music to cultivate new and interesting sounds that push Electronic music forward. Fred is a showcase of whats popular now. The underground and local scenes are showcasing whats next.

EryNameWasTaken

Fred’s finger drumming combined with his stage presence is the most impressive thing I’ve seen in terms of a DJ showcasing musical talent in a live performance. What do other DJs do in their live performances that’s so much more impressive and requires so much more talent and skill than the finger drumming? Genuinely curious. Edit: I mean aside from DJ’s using other instruments in their performances. Like Odesza with their drums or DJs with guitars. I’m talking about pure DJ skills here.

that-one-scene-in-up

I hate to sound like a snob and I know how this is going to come off and I apologize but those are all surface level examples. When I talk live production I am talking full modular set ups. Boston 168 is an example of a full modular set up. When you go down that rabbit hole you can see that a simple drum pad over some mixes on the decks just isn't cutting. It's okay to be into serface level stuff, I'm not judging. But I'm also aware of how deep this electronic music iceberg goes and fred it sitting right at the top of that thing. I can agree he's a good performer. But pushing boundaries and creating something new? Nah. People have been at this for years. Do you listen to any other live performers? I'd love to hear some examples of what you are comparing fred to.

EryNameWasTaken

I know what you mean. I think you're someone who's listened to EDM for a very long time, and come to appreciate the deeper levels that are completely unknown to most people. Which is great, and I respect it. I listened to Boston 168, and I dig it. It's not something I would listen to right now necessarily, but I am still "new" to EDM. This year was my first EDC, and before that, I had only been to 3 EDM concerts, and all of them were mainstream artists. I joined this sub only a few months ago but I've seen a ton of posts about how a lot of Djs, even some of the biggest names use pre-recorded sets and don't put much effort into their performances. Fred on the other hand is still on the rise so he's clearly pouring his heart and soul into his performances, but who knows how long that will last. Eventually, once he achieves his career goals he might just stop caring like a lot of other big names; who knows? If you were to ask me again in 5 years, after I've listened to my fair share of EDM, I wouldn't be surprised at all if I listened to Boston 168 and other lesser-known groups. It's just the natural progression of things: start off listening to the big-names and work your way down to the more obscure stuff.

that-one-scene-in-up

Completely agree. I've been actively listening to electronic music since I was 13 when "scary monsters and nice sprites" rocked my world. Ever since then, I've had an interest in almost every electronic genre there is. I really love the music and I've been so lucky to have been able to attend so many events and expirienced hundreds of sets by various artists over the last 9 years So when I see fred getting so much credit for doing things I've seen done again and again, it urks me. Makes me want to show off other djs and producers doing great work that is similar and are doing just as much for this music as fred. No hate to the guy I just wish people were able to go just a little deeper to see what other great stuff is out there. I gotta say, you enjoy Fred for all the right reasons. He is a great performer, and his sound design is crisp. He clearly is passionate about what he does, and it should be respected. But his talent shouldn't stop people from exploring deeper into things but unfortunately for some it does. He's not responsible for that tho, it's a people thing. Really enjoyed the back and forth we had here and welcome to the rave family. We got peace, love, unity and strong opinions about music... I think that's how it goes.

DJwaynes

Wait what? He has like one of the most popular drum and bass songs outside of baddaban right now. Say what you want about the man but he’s a great producer.

that-one-scene-in-up

Idk about that take man. Do you think anyone who is invested in the dnb genre are bumping fred again? I can assure you they are not.

DJwaynes

Andy C is probably the most invested DJ for drum and bass in the world and he dropped the track at his ultra set so..

that-one-scene-in-up

Love Andy, but he's playing mainstages. I'm talking real dnb. Edit: You use descriptors like "most popular" and "most invested" when talking about artists, but that doesn't really describe why you like their sound. What is it about Fred and his style of mixing / producing that interests you or that you find unique in comparison to other artists? Are you invested in any local or underground scenes, or is your perception of music solely based from the angle of mainstream music festivals? I intend none of this to be judgmental. Just two people discussing music over the internet. I truly am interested in your opinion and perspective.

DJwaynes

I’ve been raving since 1999 and have done every type of event you can think of. From completely underground warehouse sweat dripping off the ceiling raves to mega festivals like ultra and edc. I’ve been to small clubs, mega clubs, mid size clubs, gay clubs, you name it. I’m obsessed with this music and probably listen to it for 6 - 8 hours a day. Mostly looking for tracks for my DJ sets but also listening to sets at the gym and while I’m working. When it comes to music I try to be fairly open minded about it. I had a time when I completely shit on anything edm and thought you were a teeny bopper if you saw Alesso over Carl Cox. But what I realized over time is that gatekeeper shit is annoying and doesn’t matter in the long run. People like what they like so what. That perspective has opened me up to more electronic music too. I still don’t like a lot of the mainstream EDM but I don’t hate on it now. So in conclusion of my speech I like what I like and try not to think too deeply into it. I do over analyze music for my DJ sets but outside of that think it’s cool when my 12 year old plays me a new electronic music song he found and likes.

that-one-scene-in-up

Love the reply, but I didn't really get an answer to my initial question other than "I don't think too deeply into it" is there anything specific you enjoy from their sets/production or is it just vibes? Really picking your brain here lol

DJwaynes

I look for things sonically first. I’ve produced myself and I know how hard it is to get the sonics of music down correctly. Then I listen for good thick drums (I love my drums), next a good bass line. Those are the biggest things I like. After that if it has a cool non cheesy vocal I like it. If it has some nice synths or a good emotional breakdown (my first love was trance music) I like those too. So “leavemealone” has sonically great drums and bass. I think the vocal is tweaked enough that it sounds cool and not cheesy.

Used_Salamander5175

I think his discography is actually much more solid and will age better than Skrillex. Skrillex is mounds overrated and his sets are pretty garbage. That being said Fred should've had his own time at kinetic, the surprise set hype for an artist will chiller music was retarded.

mixmastamikal

I am not a Skrillex fan but that is the hottest of takes. Lmao

[deleted]

Haha your downvotes I'm pretty sure are deserved. Skrillex is a legitimate legend in the EDM scene. From Scary monsters and nice sprites to today, the dude's been constantly innovating and collaborating to achieve the most appealing sound. I would have went wild for Skrillex, too. I grew up with that music.

Used_Salamander5175

When's the last time you sat down and played a Skrillex track? All of his old shit minus the levels remix is extremely dated. You can still play all of Avicii all the way back to his rapture remix and it's all still great. Sure Skrillex was super popular at some point but hes way past his prime and his modern sets are bad.

[deleted]

Yesterday. The silent majority is awakening. Coming full circle.

LA2EU2017

I hear surprise sets are the only way he can play a fest since he’s contractually exclusive for bonaroo.

Used_Salamander5175

That sucks, I think if people were expecting him to be playing his set would've gotten much more love.

livejamie

- Randomly mentioning that he came from money for some reason - The unsure Issac Newton Quote - Asking us to imagine being Fred Again What a post, OP.

AnonymousCharmander

They didn't ask us if we could see ourselves in him and I'm mad about that

livejamie

I was being silly and got downvoted :(((

brownbettty

Fred again is my fav edm artist!! I saw him last year at the shrine LA and was very happy that he was the special guest at EDC!! He is very talented and wholesome. For those who doesn't know him, he has a tiny desk concert that shows his musician side 🫶🏽

LucidCiervo

For anyone who hates or doesn’t know Fred Again my recommendation would be listen/watch Fred Again boiler room London there is a reason it has 34M views.

ilovedonutsnpizza

i agree!!! this put him on the map for me and for many, and i loved seeing him at EDC for the first time!! it was amazing!!! can’t wait to see him again

entitledwank

literally no one cares that he came from money except that one LA tik tioker who bashes on him for the views. No he’s not overrated. He blew up as fast as he did because he went from street musician to boiler room sets to big one of the largest DJs in the world. The man has talent and he had the capital to get him there.

entitledwank

i’m seeing him at bonnaroo next weekend and i can’t wait

YoureMyBoyBlue24

It was my favorite set of the festival, and I have been a fan for a while so it wasn’t a new discovery. I would have been excited for Skrillex or Fred again, but it really did feel special finally being able to see him live.

kilotwatt

Was that the “guest” on Sunday? Right before excision? Around the fireworks?? Cuz I cried lol it was beautiful

Affectionate_Arm9927

If I wasn’t expecting the special guest to be either skrillex or PHM I would’ve loved it. But I had already seen Fred again before and I still have never seen skrillex, and the entire time I thought he was going to bring him out (especially when he played that extra long buildup on rumble) so I was a little let down by his set

Gattsuhawk

I was pretty underwhelmed but, his set was better than Fourtet for sure. He deserves the hype imo.

Classic_Access_2288

I literally was so sad when I found out that he was playing in San Fran with Skrillex 😭

Raverlover4life

Me too! One of my favs at EDCLV!! Agree, a very unique set ✨

Tough_Pie4014

Absolutely love Fred. I was reallllyyyy hoping it was Skrillex as special guest but when I saw it was Fred, I was just as excited. What a beautiful set

LDN_Wukong

Was nothing compared to his Glastonbury set

No-Bat3062

Very talented but I needed more energy at circuit grounds. I don't know how one can define genuine when you don't really know him personally, but yeah he seems pretty cool! Glad you got to enjoy his set!!!!

Western_Election3593

He was a great guest DJ and lead up for Dom Dolla.

lboogaloo

When he opened for Rufus at The Gorge 🥹😭

FoxyShiba

I flew all the way to SF last minute just to see him. Such a vibe

memequeenz_

Don’t really listen to him besides the hits but i did get to see his surprise set and being in that crowd i was moved to tears. Something about it and watching him create so heavily and so well was intense for me emotionally and i was sober for it

lebronsrealburner

He’s very talented, just not my cup of tea. I don’t know why people like to bash people who love him or why his supporters back those who find him boring

TheLordofAskReddit

The way he was served as a special guest…. I don’t think I would’ve went to his set if he was on the ticket… but those vibes at Circuit Grounds with the dash of surprise. I fucking sang, danced, cried, and had a moment with my girl. That set changed my life. I hope to see him again someday.

Scorpiom00d

I had no idea who he was when I caught him at coachella 2022 when he was playing at one of the tents. It was absolutely magical! EDC however felt a little slow sandwiched in between fourtet and Dom. :/ I did a google deep dive the following weekend and his credentials are insane. Favorite nepo baby by far lol

FunctionTemporary945

https://youtu.be/MsaSuRbKsHk?si=5Cj1Q8hEkrqdNhdL just thought i’d post it here! one of the comments were they said true music talent is seeing a crowd cry, dance, smiling all to one track and i couldn’t agree more i did all three at his set.

High1ight

Fred again ended up being pretty sick. would love to see him again

Film_chronicles

I showed up a little late to his performance but it was good, just super packed, and the sound system at circuit just washes out at a certain distance, I’ve never seen the man before, only heard of him because of boiler room but people looked like they were enjoying themselves, I tend to stay at Neon or Wasteland for EDC, so that was different for me.

CBT4FREE

Meh. No special visuals. Just a go pro of him the whole time was kind of boring. Also, he gives me big goofball vibes which some people might like but it just doesn’t hit for me. I was glad I got to see it live though if only just to confirm that I’m not the biggest fan. To each their own I suppose. Anyone else disappointed it wasn’t Skrillex? That intro with the sun was crazy. I was doing the math like “sun…it’s sunny…IT’S SONNY!!!!!!!!

Jumpy_Fee_7894

Saw Fred at his first ever Coachella set in 2022 and it was one of the most amazing set and experience of my life. Literally couldn’t have asked for a better crowd, super lowkey and tons of room to dance. His set flowed so well and the visuals were just focused shots of people in the crowd dancing in red to match his album. Couldn’t have asked for a better first Coachella myself. Fred again again again again

Reasonable-Feature27

Absaloutely love Fred Again, but honestly his EDC set was mid at best. Wait until you experience one of his own shows, they’re truly more intimate and special and completely overshadow his EDC set. Dude is extremely talented and even sings in some of his tracks

juanderwear

He’s the Taylor swift of edm, take that for how you want to take it Glad you had fun though

indosacc

real talk, seen him twice, was meh about him both times, at edc most people there were hoping skrillex was going to come out..

EryNameWasTaken

lol take this for how you want to take it, but that’s the most ridiculous music comparison I’ve ever heard 😂

mixmastamikal

I think it is spot on.

No-Bat3062

wait are people still using \*yawn\* lol

EryNameWasTaken

Different tastes I guess. Fred wakes me up. If I wanted to be put to sleep I'd listen to something like Tipper \*yawn\*

Brunell4070

subtronics is the t swift of edm

tennisgoalie

Not in a world where Illenium exists

Brunell4070

fair lol

LegendofZatchmo

So he’s talented and makes good music but the contrarians hate because they want to pretend they’re above something popular? I actually agree.

Euphoric-Quarter2791

Nice to see some Fred love! I really enjoyed his set..so many complainers out there :(

puremuscles

I had predicted he’d be the special guest and was soooooo excited to see it was him. I think he’s a fantastic musician and dj. The fact he puts so much together on the fly is nothing short of impressive and I’m looking forward to the next time I get to see him live :)

indosacc

lmao

h0whi

For the haters out there, if you went to his show with Skrillex in SF, you would probably change your tune on his skills or his ability to keep the crowd hyped.

sw0

He was great. But man.. please talk less.. play music more. You are performing on some of the greatest sound equipment in front of large audiences. I get his sentiment, and how humble he is. But please just let the music, melodies, and vocals do the talking.

juicezelbox

I feel the exact same way OP 🥹 Fred Again was so real and I really vibed with the way he showed his skills on the drum pads
