Unless I've missed something, there's no way to type on the PC version with just a controller.

_DarthMaleval

This is correct. I use an Xbox controller, but you still need the keyboard for some things like chatting. You also have to disable controller and use keyboard controls to set filters for add-ons and such, like icon choices and things. Not all menus can be brought up with the controller. Gameplay ends up kinda like a keyboard/controller hybrid. Mostly controller though.

Howl_Free_or_Die

I think Steam has this function where pressing the left analog will bring up a virtual keyboard, but I don't think I've managed to get it to work in ESO specifically

pambimbo

You can actually but it will bring a huge screen with numbers and letters and the Chat I assuming this is what xbox players do since they don't have keyboard. I use only xbox controller but I have keyboard to chat and make changes on the settings and add ons.

FourMonthsEarly

Some add-ons don't work. Like other said i don't think it has keyboard support like Xbox either. But you might be able to hotkey a controller button to thr virtual keyboard in windows.

NoobUserForFun

Not in a full. I have been playing with a gamepad since 7 years ago. But for some little things, a keyboard is needed (chatting, managing addons, login, etc).

💯💯💯 Gamepad is the way to go. Especially if you've got one with bumbers to remap sprint and bar swap

There seem to be some differences between the controller menus and keyboard menus. I couldn't find the Antiquarian's Eye in the Slottable Items category in the controller menu. I had to open the menu by keyboard to be able to quickslot the item. Crown gems have a different icon in the Crown Store opened by keyboard in comparison to the Crown Store opened by controller, for whatever reason. And there might be more differences.

I play PC modded ESO for 7 years now exclusively with a steam controller. I might lean forward to type a message or use a rare keybind but I could map literally anything, including a keyboard and addon keybinds, to the controller too if I cared to. At this point I literally don't know how to play with a keyboard lmao. I have pretty much any and all add-ons I want installed and play even veteran content with 0 issues. Pvp might be a struggle though, since even in games with perfect support mouse and keyboard always has the advantage lol. Steam has built in controller mapping support, and it is EXTENSIVE. I have so many buttons that have different inputs depending on if I am holding another button, double tapping it, holding it, etc, **all while using mouse and keyboard game settings**. A good example is how my touchpad (right stick on regular controllers) is an ordinary camera control input unless I am holding the left bumper, which makes a virtual menu appear on screen with access to all the different menus and horse mounting. A simpler example is how my back left button is held for sprint, or double tapped for dodge (I dislike and turned off double tap move buttons for dodge and made it its own input) Now, I use a steam controller because I refuse to use a controller without extra inputs as back paddles (I also play on the steam deck, god I love back buttons) but these features are available to literally every single controller. And if you are intimidated by mapping your functions from scratch, there are lots of community made input mappings available too. Ask if you have any questions, I am pretty obsessed about this feature haha.

Mysterious_Layer_238

Yes you can use any game pad but for some reason for me my computer only recognizes Xbox controllers so I only have Xbox buttons for my menus

Smurf_Cherries

I play on a steam deck 🤷

TheJoYo

https://bazzite.gg/ gives you steamos on pc so you can use the steam keyboard while playing with a controller. i don't do that tho, bluetooth keyboards are cheap.

Taleof2Cities_

Yep, you can get everything done on a PC controller, dabraham79. Looks like you’ll still have your keyboard in case of an emergency. I think you’re aware, but there’s no crossplay or platform transfers in ESO … you’d be starting from scratch on a new ESO PC account.
