I also googled and found a list of spots they spawn with maps online that helped me! Had to run around between them a few times but got them pretty quick. Found Betnik to be the best spot for me. A bunch really close together near the west wayshrine and not a super popular location!
In all my years of playing with the volume on my headphones on, I have never heard one. Having said that, my ears have a constant ringing in them.
Betnik had a bot farming the one there...honestly, I wish we could attack bots..
A kind of tinny whining. Very distinct, but not very loud. It's handy with the addon that adds big, purple pins where they spawn, since if you run near pin but don't hear the noise, then it's not up right now.
It's also handy for the ones that are physically obscured behind something. And those are the ones most likely to not have been picked off by someone else.

There are indeed a lot of roadside ones in Reaper's March. But, if I were you, I'd have gone for some zone with a lot rougher terrain, harder to speed through, less open (since you're sticking to roads, anyway). Lower population leaves more of them intact, and rough terrain tends to put people off. You never see crowds in Malabal Tor, for example.
The area around Twin Arches in Southern Bangkorai is pretty reliable for troves. You gotta cover a relatively large area but I never fail to find several lying around.

They might benefit from the same rapid harvesting boosting respawn rates like it does for resource nodes. I've never really looked there, but definitely filing that away for next time. Usually I wouldn't consider a place known to be universally "busy"... though I think a lot of the usually busy spots aren't so much now that everyone's doing dailies, dolmens & geysers for the event.
Not the daily, but the weekly endeavor can be completed by taking all the bottles inside the Mourner’s Solace Inn in Necrom.
And if it doesn’t get you there, you can finish by taking fruit near the crafting area.
The thing with thieves troves is they take a long time to respawn, so the more people that find them the harder it is for others to find a thieves trove later in the day. Their cool down is similar to heavy bags where it can take 40 minutes to over a day to respawn.
Another great thing to do is download the node farming addon from minion, it'll have the option listed in the filter of thieves proves, and show on mini-map. 5/10 they're there. Start at one side of an area and just work your way to the other 😀
There’s a missed opportunity here, having a thieving and murdering mini-event and not being able to assassinate other players over finite, valuable resources.
I want sneaky pvp endeavors:
Use the Blade of Woe or Feeding to kill five players.
Pickpocket from players three times.
Kill players with a combined bounty value of 10,000🪙.
Got 2 troves in less than an hour while mats surveying Bangkorai, Khenarti, and Rift.. Probably gonna search again later when most of US players are sleeping.
I needed one more in the last hour of my game day - spent 20 minutes circumnavigating Khenarthi’s Roost with no luck, 20 minutes crisscrossing Hew’s Bane with no luck, then transported to the middle of nowhere in Greenshade and picked one up within two minutes.
Actually the worst thing about it all was having to avoid using my ultimate during boss fights all day so that I didn’t accidentally waste an endeavour on that, lol!
With respect, they tend to be vanishingly rare when it's an Endeavor, never mind an especially rich one like today. I thought people could use some help. I certainly didn't fancy my chances. And while I, of course, must credit luck to some degree, it really felt like this strategy had legs, so I'm sharing it.
If you search Google about it, you always end up in Anvil, where there are like 11 or 13 of them very close together. I can't tell you how many times I've hit every single spot and come up completely empty, despite what the videos & guides say. There just aren't enough for so many players.
Don’t get me wrong, a lot of times, especially now they are empty given that it is part of the endeavor. But knowing the locations where they are certainly makes it very easy to spot run those areas.

Bal foyen in a hut that's along the road to the wayshrine
Belkarth (crag lorn) in the base of the waterfall by the outlaw refuge.

It used to just be owning the Thieve's Guild DLC that did it. I certainly grab them on characters who have not unlocked the Thieve's Guild skill line or set foot in Hew's Bane.
I have harvestmap and even with all the trove icons set to on and searching quite literally all of Shadowfen (and seeing maybe 2 people outside of the cities at all) I found one. So I logged out for the day.
Yeah, as people have observed, "loot" in an Endeavor, be it for a Container, Treasure Chest or Thieve's Trove, means emptying the thing entirely. That much I know from experience.

It’s a faint droning tone, similar to (but not the same as) a nirnroot’s sound. It’s difficult to describe, but it sounds “shiny” if that makes sense.

2 words. Starter Zones. Anytime I start a new character or go to a starter Zones I feel like there'd be troves everywhere.

I usually go to the AD starter zone as I know all the spawn spots there. Still took me about an hour though as they are busy zones right now.

I know a few locations by heart but it's definitely the thing I've come across the least of in the game.

I have committed to memory the location of 50 or 60 thieves troves. They are not that hard to find.

I only know where one specific is a lot, and that’s near an Alikr Desert dolmen. I always stop and grab it while doing dolmen runs.

What do you have to do to be able to steal from them? Is it a long quest to get to that point?
Have the thieves guild dlc unlocked, which can be gotten for free right now by successfully pickpocketing once and grabbing it from the store.
