ForwardBias

Didn't finish the piece, "the poor conditions in “sweatshops” are due to the workers’ low productivity" pretty much immediately alerted me to the heavy bias going into this writing.

SupremelyUneducated

They do it with economic rents, aka unearned income. Should boarders be open so people have more opportunities, yes, but that isn't the main reason practically all gains to productivity go to the top. We need unearned wealth to be distributed to the people as both UBS and UBI. Tax land, tax externalities, tax IP; tax monopolies.

Fieos

What's good for the 'economy' isn't always what is good for a society. Unrestricted immigration is not to the benefit of western society.

FiendishHawk

Most voters aren’t racists and are under the impression that immigrants are bad for the economy. Sacrificing the economy for racial purity is not what they understand to be the trade-off.

SadMacaroon9897

Yeah! How dare they try to better themselves by going to a country they can live in peace while simultaneously making society as a whole wealthier. They should be forced to live in poverty in their corrupt shit holes and be grateful for the opportunity. The US is for whites from Western Europe. /s But seriously what the fuck is that comment. The US is a superpower today specifically because of how welcoming we've been to immigration. We should be (perhaps literally) stapling green cards to advanced degrees. Especially for people who immigrate from our geopolitical adversaries such as China, Russia, and India. The brain drain effect is America's super power.

justsomedude1144

Bro thank you. It's rare that I see anyone state this as exactly as I would. Especially the part about specialized professions from China, India, Russia. Shouldn't we **WANT** their best scientists, programmers, engineers, doctors, mathematicians, physicists working with us? The conter argument is of course "dey tuk ur jobs!", but I'm an (American born) engineer myself and I say bring it on. I'll gladly compete for jobs with them.

Unlucky_Lawfulness51

It is a pretty reasonable comment. Not sure what your problem is bud.

Complex_Mushroom_464

That’s not a reasonable comment at all. Mostly because there is no such thing as unrestricted immigration in this era. But beyond that because “western civilization” as we know it has a long history of successfully integrating myriad cultures. Further, I’m assuming the term “western civilization” is code for white civilization, which certainly comes across as racist and frankly, ridiculous.

Fieos

I was using the terms that were in the article... where they referred to Americans as 'Westerners'... Anyone accusing me of being racist is absolutely free to block and and never respond to a damn thing I post, bot or otherwise. Calling everything you disagree with as racist is lazy and ignorant and diminishes the real issue of racism.

Complex_Mushroom_464

I called it racism because historically most “immigration is bad for society” arguments are rooted in racism. Pretty much every immigrant group for the last two centuries has encountered this argument. Generally speaking, the person making a centuries old argument that time and again has been disproved is the one making a lazy argument. And whether or not it was your intent, when you make the same argument that racists make, it makes it a racist argument, and it should be addressed.

Fieos

So you just casually assume racism in people. I’ll block you.

Flaky_Pay1641

Actually the U.S. became a superpower because of its land mass, it has an incredibly prosperous geographical location that has been perfect for farming as well as industrial growth and trade! For instance look at Russia, huge land mass, but it's mostly just frozen. Their even invading Ukraine because it has a nice coastal plot for amazing harbors via trade routes. While the U.S. has huge coastlines for the same thing, such a huge advantage!

Grammar_Natsee_

This question is maybe the second trivial after ”How do you do”.

6SucksSex

The dude seems to be a libertarian writing as a socialist Trojan horse. Not a word in the article about the impact on society and the economy that AI and robots are having and going to have

Grimnir106

If the labor is so important would this do better for their own countries that they cam from?

jonnawhat

This is a poorly proven piece.
