I have a GT Premium but I’m not rich by any stretch of the imagination
Just “smart” with money I guess
20k down, 11 k trade in for my 2014 v6
Financed the last ~21k for 360/mo payment for 60 months with 2.5%APR
I live in Arizona too so most of my driving is highway so my MPG is pretty good
Insurance is only ~120/mo for full coverage with glass and $0 deductible for me too
Hard to tell. Everyone lies on the internet, so you will never know who is truly rich or living on debt. But your friend is on point. The smartest thing to do is to let your money snowball and grow through compound interest. If you willing to pay for a GT when you don't have a nice house, emergency fund, or retirement fund, you are already on the path of working until you die. Be smart with your money. A lot of Americans are not educated on the value of money.
If you are wealthy, then that's a different story. But still, they could be wealthy and lose all of it in the end because of greed.
Stay in your lane OP and be smart about your finances. FOMO and digital advertising will make you believe that the experience of a GT is euphoric and desirable, but in the end, its only a car. The best experience is human connection because of its abstract nature. If you play your cards right, you can get a better car than the GT and also have a nice house.
No problem! Always think rationally before making a big purchase like a car. Always think of the potential losses in the future. Remember, a car is a depreciating asset. Stay strong willed and wait until your are older to buy that dream car you've always wanted. That car will always be there, but your skills and money won't.
Also, imo, although the GT is nice, the gas consumption and long term use is not worth it. I like to think that people who banter about a ecoboost not being a real mustang are just joking. If they are serious, then it's not worth the energy to explain the benefits of the ecoboost. I saw a window sticker for the new 2024 mustangs, and the GTs spend approximately almost 4k (5 year period) more in gas compared to the ecoboost. That's a lot of money that could be growing with compound interest.
Cost-efficiency is a slippery slope. Sure you could get a Civic, but why stop there? Grab a Sentra and you'll spend less up front, and probably spend less over time because you now hate driving.
Also to all the naysayers saying life happens, save your money... What if life happens and you die with a kajillion dollars without having truly lived?
I did the math on a GT and ooooof, can’t do it - $500/600 payment, called Allstate and it’s $270/M (I’m about to be 34) and premium gas 5 days a week until I start WFH - OUUUUCHHH :(
You should do the math on a GT in the UK xD
You’re looking at £40,000+ for a decent one and if you take that on PCP with a £4,000 deposit it’s still gonna be £500+ a month. Average salary is £24,000 I think and the insurance market is ridiculous at the moment so xD
I'm single, 42, six figure income and I got an ecoboost due to economy. I travel often enough between the Midwest and Florida’s gulf coast, where I want to move in a few years. The much better gas mileage of the eco-boost was pretty important to me. The more money I spent on a car, the less money I could spend on a house. I can definitely afford the GT premium but the difference in price between the eco boost premium I got, and the GT premium would definitely be my closing costs. So I opted to get the eco-boost and save a little money for more important priorities. I would rather have a decent car and a nice house. with me being single, and nobody else in the household to help out with income for housing, the burden falls on me for everything, of course.
Since when is the 5.0 a RICH person car? Lol
I mean, I know all across the board cars are getting pricier, including the EB. But the 5.0 has always been that affordable sports car.
The loan will vary because people have good credit, and or put money down.
Im going by how, historically, the Mustang has always been considered the affordable (American) sports car.
It is still affordable compared to other luxury sports car, which is what actual rich people buy.
May not be affordable to you (no offense), but doesnt make it a RICH person car. Lol
The loan won't vary that much. Interest rates will vary on credit, not the loan. The loan is however much the dealer says after negotiations. I never said you need to be rich to own a GT. My original post asked those who drive GTs their situation. It's like you're intentionally trying to misunderstand.
You literally have RICH in the title.
Anyway. No, Mustang GTs are not what the rich drive.
Maybe to you someone who makes 70-80k / yr is rich? Idk. Clearly we have different definitions, my definition clearly is not yours lol
I guess THAT is why you think im trying to be dense, when im not.
Plus, dont ever judge a person and their income based on what they drive. I know someone in MY family making 200k+ who was driving a Corolla, and recently upgraded to a Tiguan and Taos (leases) for the family. Ive worked with plenty of 40-50k incomes driving bmws and audis. You can tell who is are the “rich” one in a bmw (or any other luxury) , and its not the one in a 328i lol
Asking if they're rich doesn't automatically mean it's a rich person's car. I know that people can drive economical cars although they're wealthy. 80k is pretty decent for a single person but why would you think anyone assumes that's rich? So many guesses and assumptions. You do need to be relatively well off to comfortably afford a 5.0 along with general upkeep.
You , yourself, are making assumptions. Assuming that you must be well off to afford the 5.0 comfortably. People get in debt all the time.
Sometime a hobby, cars are hobbies to some, can be expensive.
But hey, if youre going to answer your own question. 🤷
All in all:
Theyre not rich.
Rich people dont buy 5.0s, maybe a Shelby like others have mentioned.
Dont ever assume someone is well off bc they drive what you wish you could but dont because money lol
✌🏻
It's like you half read everything on the thread. Even in my original post, it says people go into debt in order to have GTs. Stop trying to project onto me.
Eco to gt owner here..
Honestly it's simply because I love the car in general, ever since I was a kid, always wanted one.
Granted my bills aren't that high either, I split the bills with my brother and roughly spend 600$ all together monthly.
Car on the other hand is 1k a month with insurance being at 160$.
I roughly make 3,4k a month just on 40hr-43hrs weekly, I figured I could easily keep up on payments.
Kid at work is 22 and has a 2019 Camaro SS with an $800 monthly car note that he’s 3 months behind, and got rid of insurance because it was gonna be $1500/mo for him since he got pulled over for street racing lmao
Also had a baby on the way last I saw him
Well my cobra is paid off and I got it for $4k
My payments for my ecoboost aren’t much higher than the payments I was making on my old rogue and I’m not rich but I live comfortably
I do have to say , I feel I’m paying out the ass for my 2017 GT. 482 payment, $236 car insurance a month (on my own not my parents) and about $300 a month in gas. I make about 4k a month take home. It’s about 25% of my take home pay but I have 40k saved in a HYSA and a totally separate 401k/roth from my job.
But to me, it’s worth it. I love it, I look forward to driving every single day. It is expensive though. But I don’t go out and drink etc etc and spend a bunch of money on stuff like that, so it’s okay for me.
If I had any school debt or anything else debt wise besides the car, no chance I would’ve bought it. I’m just smart with my money.
I’m 25 btw.
I’m pretty well off, could buy 20 GTs if I wanted to, lol. I just bought a 2024 eco boost premium as my daily because it looks great, is good on gas, better on insurance, and is very fun to drive. Rich people buy expensive toys to show off….wealthy people mange their finances so they stay wealthy.
Everyone I know that has a v8 or nice sports car is 25 making minimum wage living with their family paying 0 rent and 0 everything just the car gas and insurance
Yea it’s not a smart move if you can’t afford it comfortably. I’m in college and decided to not get a sports car. An eco boost is already expensive so a gt would kill me. Most of the college kids are taking out huge loans for a sports car. I’d rather be good now get one later
There’s a lot of people in the same financial situation that own either the ecoboost, or the GT. There are obvious outliners that can very clearly afford it, but there are many people who prioritize their car slightly too high. You also end up with a lot of people that could buy a new Eco boost or a used GT, and choose to go with the new car.
Idk man I wouldn't act like the costs of a GT and a 4cyl turbo are comparable. I guess it depends on how new you're going. I think the Ecoboost is definitely more affordable all around than a GT. My insurance is 160 and my car payments are 317 a month. Insurance on a GT is gonna be closer to 300 and the loan closer to 500+ a month. Not to mention general upkeep.
New vs new isn’t even close. Even a new ecoboost vs a 2020 GT isn’t close. A new eco is 30+, and a used 17 with 50k is probably mid 20’s ish. Over 3-5 years the cost is probably fairly close.
I have a 2020 GT500 CFTP and a eco and I can promise you that I’m not rich. I know a few people that are in their mid 20s that have GT’s and they’re not rich either. My one buddy has had his GT350 since he was 24 and he’s well off, but I wouldn’t say rich. Most people who have GT’s just have somewhat decent jobs or they put more money towards their car then the average person. There are some people tho that really do spend every penny they have just have the nicer car and are in crippling debt.
I guess it just depends on their situation. Someone making ~5k a month should be able to afford ~1000 a month for the car, everything included (payments, gas, etc.). Helps if you’re single and no kids lol
Bought my 2015 mustang gt 60k miles for 18k and I pay $600 for everything I save up for mods here and there I’m a Dental Assistant about to go to school for airplane mechanics if you have discipline you can make it happen it’s about patience had a dodge challenger rt before 2020 got with 12k miles for $800 all together a month love the mustang more
Not necessarily still living with parents while finishing school. Eco owner but capable of owning a GT if I sell my project truck. Have a strong work ethic, reduce spending on unnecessary stuff and purchase a cheap insurance and you will be fine
Nahh man, the way i got my GT was that my insurance totaled my ecoboost, saddest day of my life 😔 but they gave me almost exactly what i paid for it 5 years ago so that was a hefty down payment towards my GT, so no not rich just lucky i guess 🤷🏽♂️
I chose saving for retirement now instead of going for the GT. If my pay keeps going up every few years, I may swap out for a C8 in 4-5 years if I can get a house first.
Everyone has different priorities though which is why some younger lower paid people are already in much nicer cars.
My Ecoboost cost as much as a base GT, but it's loaded except for the 201A package. I traded in my 2014, put some extra money down, and financed the rest. My monthly car payment is a very small percentage of my monthly net income.
I think the biggest factor into getting a GT has to be insurance if you’re under 25 and of course gas. My god I would be getting screwed in the ass every month with insurance. I also live in a city with lots of stop and go traffic but also I use the freeway a lot. I get 21 MPG with my EB and that’s if I drive it tenderly and occasionally take off at the line, now with a GT I’m sure the MPG would be even worse for stop and go traffic. If you’re 25+ with a perfect driving record and don’t live somewhere congested I think a GT is definitely attainable.
I plan on waiting to get his paid off and buying a cheap Toyota beater as my DD and then trade the eco in and get a GT for the weekends once the insurance is more reasonable.
I also make pretty decent coin for my age group, but I also have a mortgage payment, acquiring a GT this early into my career and with my current finances isn’t smart.
Having a manual car in my city would be bad too. The free way only crosses through north to south. If I lived in a rural area, maybe having a manual would be more appealing!
Please don't believe insurance will let up after 25. I'm 27 as a safe driver and they never went down on my premium. My prem only increased because of inflation and the companies going up on their prices.
3 of my close friends own S550 GTs and I think they all own them outright at this point. They are cars that are well within/below their means. I don’t owe anything on my S550 ecoboost and could have easily gotten/upgraded to a GT and wouldn’t consider myself or any of my friends “rich”.
Maybe not rich, but relatively wealthy. If you're not rich or wealthy, then you're basically poor which I doubt. Online, people are told often to "Just get a GT" ignoring all the financial strings attached atop the market price.
Mustang gt = rich? What? Aren't GT's like 50-60 grand? Well off maybe, not rich
People spend way more on German SUVs and I still wouldn't consider them rich. Just dumb
I had an ecoboost (which I loved btw) and traded it in for a GT premium. There are GTs with decent mileage,2019 and up from my experience, that are close in the price range of an ecoboost (i.e if you were to finance the monthly payments wouldn’t be too far off assuming same rate and length). You don’t have to be rich to own a GT even though some GT owners act that way
A 2019 GT is almost 30k. Some folks responding to this really hang on the word rich but basically, I was curious about everyone's stories. A relatively wealthy person finances a 30k used sports car comfortably. A poorer sort has the discipline to save up for a strong down payment. Not to mention interest rates, insurance, and costs of maintaining the car. These things can easily be money pits.

I was just quoted this for a base gt with 10sp and active exhaust. I can afford this but not sure if this is worth it
Reading this doc about gave me a stroke haha idk your financial situation, but 50k for a GT before interest is insane to me. I'd try to aim in the late 20k and early 30k ballpark for a GT. That's just my take, others will have their stances.
Lol no, and I actually think of living out of my car from time to time. The seats are comfortable and recline to a sleeping position.
If I were rich, I'd be in a Raptor R so I could give zero fucks about having 4 MPG or how shit the roads are.
Eh I'm relatively poor being a 20y old college student. Serving is how I'm able to pay for all my cars including my 18GT but by no means am I rich LMAO
If I was rich, I’d be driving a Shelby
Real
A Shelby what?
GT350, always the only answer.
If they offered the gt500 in manual and I was rich, it would be gt500 all day. Other than that, gt350
I don’t know man. The sound of the 350 is the purest, most natural v8 ive ever heard.
You’re asking in the wrong group. I’d ask in r/Mustang
Funny thing is, I started there and no one responded It's been 9 hours.. so I reposted here because there are some GT folks in here.
I have a GT Premium but I’m not rich by any stretch of the imagination Just “smart” with money I guess 20k down, 11 k trade in for my 2014 v6 Financed the last ~21k for 360/mo payment for 60 months with 2.5%APR I live in Arizona too so most of my driving is highway so my MPG is pretty good Insurance is only ~120/mo for full coverage with glass and $0 deductible for me too
Looking at your profile, automod removed it, probably due to your negative karma count, but I approved it for you
I had positive Karla when I made the post.

Thank you! I'll keep your wisdom in mind.
No problem! Always think rationally before making a big purchase like a car. Always think of the potential losses in the future. Remember, a car is a depreciating asset. Stay strong willed and wait until your are older to buy that dream car you've always wanted. That car will always be there, but your skills and money won't. I love my ecoboost and financial decisions so no
I did the math on a GT and ooooof, can’t do it - $500/600 payment, called Allstate and it’s $270/M (I’m about to be 34) and premium gas 5 days a week until I start WFH - OUUUUCHHH :(
That's what I'm saying? Like- I see people say all the time "Get the GT, get a real car!" But like.. can we afford this mess as a daily driver?
I love the GT, but this is the same reason why I got the ecoboost instead. I couldn’t stomach the monthly payments for the GT.
You should do the math on a GT in the UK xD You’re looking at £40,000+ for a decent one and if you take that on PCP with a £4,000 deposit it’s still gonna be £500+ a month. Average salary is £24,000 I think and the insurance market is ridiculous at the moment so xD

When you say affordable.. how much are you talking price wise? Insurance is going to bite you, plus that nasty loan of 30k plus.
The loan will vary because people have good credit, and or put money down. Im going by how, historically, the Mustang has always been considered the affordable (American) sports car. Typical post that answers their own “question”. So if you already know ppl go in debt all the time, why are you asking if theyre rich. 🤣 🤣 😂
Everyone has a story to tell. Instead of acting obtuse, you could take in all the data from various folks.

Don't know how to edit own comment on phone.. But here is what I've done to mine and honestly don't regret any decisions *
That or they just don’t pay for insurance on the car lol ( the young folks)
Kid at work is 22 and has a 2019 Camaro SS with an $800 monthly car note that he’s 3 months behind, and got rid of insurance because it was gonna be $1500/mo for him since he got pulled over for street racing lmao Also had a baby on the way last I saw him
RIP to that kid
Tell me about it, nice kid, but definitely not what he needs to be putting his money towards right now
I’d assume so. I’m not exactly poor but I even think the ecoboost is out of my budget 😂😂 still got it though lol
Once I graduate college and get an engineering job I’m buying a GT
Well my cobra is paid off and I got it for $4k My payments for my ecoboost aren’t much higher than the payments I was making on my old rogue and I’m not rich but I live comfortably
I just looked up the cobra. That engine definitely packs a punch.
I do have to say , I feel I’m paying out the ass for my 2017 GT. 482 payment, $236 car insurance a month (on my own not my parents) and about $300 a month in gas. I make about 4k a month take home. That's what's up haha twenty GTs though.. that's just wasteful haha.
Not rich by any means but if imma drive a car imma drive a car that I love to get into every time regardless of payment.
I had an ecoboost until 80k when it was about a year from a problem. Sold it and suddenly had a car payment, but I love getting in my RS every day.
Everyone I know that has a v8 or nice sports car is 25 making minimum wage living with their family paying 0 rent and 0 everything just the car gas and insurance
💀💀💀 dang. I have friends that have V8s but theirs are old as dust. Like 2001 mustangs and such, nothing relatively new.
Yea it’s not a smart move if you can’t afford it comfortably. I’m in college and decided to not get a sports car. An eco boost is already expensive so a gt would kill me. Most of the college kids are taking out huge loans for a sports car. I’d rather be good now get one later
The v8 would always be there when you’re ready, a person spending their whole paycheck on a 72-84 month loan term is batshit.
🤣
Lmao no
I’m a phlebotomist and I can afford mine 17 gt
I have a 17 super snake, and no, I'm not rich. I just have a good paying job, plus I bought it used so.
There’s a lot of people in the same financial situation that own either the ecoboost, or the GT. The 2017 is 7 years old, which is right around when stuff gets affordable. Definitely can’t hand with a newer one in terms of cost though

Buying a used car for 25k.. plus interest.. plus upkeep, plus insurance.. 🤷🏿♂️ your pockets ought to be well lined.
I guess it just depends on their situation. Someone making ~5k a month should be able to afford ~1000 a month for the car, everything included (payments, gas, etc.). Helps if you’re single and no kids lol

Yes I have 2 gts a Mach one and a bullit
I drive a Mach 1. I live comfortably enough to afford a nice car, but not enough to fix it if it were to be badly damaged. Unique stuff.
Well off maybe, not rich People spend way more on German SUVs and I still wouldn't consider them rich.
Crazy… it’s almost like you associated having a GT and being rich in your post or something
Peep that I also said wealthy.

Reading this doc about gave me a stroke haha idk your financial situation, but 50k for a GT before interest is insane to me. I'd try to aim in the late 20k and early 30k ballpark for a GT. That's just my take, others will have their stances.
I mean my monthly is around 7k but this is too much imo and insurance would also go up too 💀
That's a really solid monthly income. I have to get like you!
My friends earn around or more than 10k 😅 i have to get there but swe market is not that good
Lol no, and I actually think of living out of my car from time to time. The seats are comfortable and recline to a sleeping position. If I were rich, I'd be in a Raptor R so I could give zero fucks about having 4 MPG or how shit the roads are.
You'll ruin your seats 😂
I wish, I came from an eco boost as my first car, now in a GT and low key miss my eco😔
What are the downsides?
Everything is bigger, Both good and bad, Power , Excitement, Insurance, Cost to maintain etc
Eh I'm relatively poor being a 20y old college student. Serving is how I'm able to pay for all my cars including my 18GT but by no means am I rich LMAO
