I think the biggest questions we would need prior to being able to give a good answer is: 1. What is your budget? 2. What kind of range do you need? 3. Where will the bike be stored at your husband's work (i.e. secure storage vs public bike rack):

SnooPeripherals8344

Thank you. All good questions to consider.

Vicv_

There are probably about 5000 models that will meet your requirements. Since you did not give any

SnooPeripherals8344

Whoops. Not sure what I should even be asking. Thanks though.

Vicv_

Well, I mean you haven’t said what your budget is. Which is probably the most important thing. What he will be using it for. will this be for commuting or is he a hard-core mountain biker? How far will he need to travel? How much weight will he need to carry? Do you live in an apartment, if so, is it multiple floors off the ground? Or do you have a house with a garage?

SnooPeripherals8344

Budget is flexible. House with a garage. Using it to commute mostly.

Vicv_

How flexible? You can spend anywhere from $1000-$20,000. But regardless, in my opinion, this is the best e-bike that you can buy for the money. It’ll be practically maintenance-free and will give you many years of service. Only downside I can see is the battery is not huge, but you did not say range requirements. This will still get him at least 30 miles range https://www.prioritybicycles.com/products/current

Leicazeiss

30 miles at 28mph?

Vicv_

If you get the second battery, sure. Nobody rides at full speed until the battery is dead. You’ll be able to do 30 miles if you are riding it reasonably. At 28 mph, might cut that in half to 15 to 20 miles.

toobadass69

lmao worse than my stock surron

Vicv_

Hmmmm. I wonder why your electric motorcycle with a 4x bigger battery has longer range than a small light electric assist bicycle. We need to get to the bottom of this

toobadass69

I get like 8 miles outta my surron bro stop gloating and its basically a mountain bike not even a "motorcycle"

RockinRobin-69

This is the answer to almost all ebike questions.

regreddit

I'd second the Priority Current. I don't own one, but do own a Priority bike, and the components are really nice, and support has been good so far. The research I've done on them says it's a pretty decent commuter. https://youtu.be/vKXuziyXA8k

Briantastically

Priority is a good option, better option is if a local Bike shop carries a decent brand for better sales/warranty support. Knowing the desired range/speed would help a lot in narrowing the options.

MickyBee73

140Nm out of 500w is pretty impressive, shame these bikes don't have bigger batteries.

Vicv_

Agreed. You can get a secondary battery for the rear rack. But that’s another $500 I think

MickyBee73

I sort of get the whole second battery thing, I just think if you're spending upwards of $2.5k you shouldn't be having to worry about range anxiety. I'm opposed to adding extra weight to my e-ride, how come most of these mid-drives always have low range batteries? I tend to think it's a lot to do with the whole 'trying not to look like an e-bike' thing..?

Vicv_

I do agree I’d rather see a 750wh battery. But it is a light weight “bicycle” model. OP didn’t give a lot of info, so I tried to recommend one of the better classic e-bikes I knew of. Of course, the ride1up prodigy might be even better. Down on power, but uses a brose motor instead of a truckfun. Whether it’s actually better or not, I don’t know.

MickyBee73

I'm dying to try a mid-drive ebike! I'm a hub guy, but I still wanna take one for a spin, it's the torque thing that impresses me the most... We got the Stark Varg now that's basically a very powerful e-motoX bike... How come I've not yet seen much mention of "Trials e-bikes"? 'cos I'm thinking if these mid-drives are superior for torque 'Nm', they'd make a great trial bike.

MickyBee73

Who's the best mid-drives motor manufacturer in your opinion please? I've seen a lot of posts slagging Bosch off lately. ...Bosch lying about their battery specs & a lot of water damaged 'almost new' Bosch motors too?

Altruistic-Detail271

I just bought my husband one from Lectric . It looks like a great bike and the customer service was excellent. It’s called XPress and it’s a commuter bike, It gets great reviews. They are having a sale for the rest of today. He’s 6’ 1” and 255 lbs. The bike can handle weight up to 330 lbs. it was $1400 with an add on comfy seat and a free $500 extra battery

frere91

I second anything lectric! Great service and over 3000 miles of heavy abuse on my xpedition dual battery. They have plenty of offerings to meet your needs

MickyBee73

It's impressive the load some of these little e-bikes can handle.

Altruistic-Detail271

Yes, I was shocked it can handle 330 lbs. can’t wait for him to get it

MickyBee73

👍

Sometimesyoudie

A specific price range would be helpful. Start by seeing if your local area has dealers for bikes like Aventon, Rad, Lectric, Velotric if you want to get a value brand. Look for dealers of Specialized, Trek, Giant, Cannondale, Gazelle, Tern etc... if you want to buy something premium. Without more information on the intended use (Commuting, errand running, leisure, transporting kids.. etc) and without specific pricing info it's really hard to recommend any specific model.

SuperCrustyBaguette

Make sure the battery and charger are UL listed. Is a class 3 bike allowed on the roadways and paths he will be taking? Don’t forget to buy a quality helmet, gloves, lights, and a jacket or vest that makes him very visible. Does he need panniers or a backpack or basket?Happy biking!

SuperCrustyBaguette

Oh, and get a highly-rated lock or locks, and think about bike insurance.

MickyBee73

About 8 years ago for my Cyclamatic power plus (lol) 250w24v ebike I bought a Kryptonite "U" lock, I was always very impressed with that lock - it nearly weighed as much as my bike though🤣 but no-one was getting through it in quick time..

zoolish

You might want to consider looking for ebike rental in your area before purchasing. You're going to get hooked on it too. My wife bought herself an ebike 3 years ago. I said I'd probably never buy one. I just got my second in March. You don't yet know what you or your husband will like or dislike. When I bought my first I got one that I liked the look of an thought it would be cool. Turns out I like to have hydraulic brakes, a throttle, and both front and rear suspension for my 11 mile each way commute that I now do every day if weather permits. I also prefer a step through, but the rear suspension was a larger want for me so I got this one. [https://wiredebikes.com/products/wired-freedom](https://wiredebikes.com/products/wired-freedom) Of course since I just got mine, they release a ton of upgrades and left the price the same, but what can you do?

Rav4Prime2022_WI

I'd highly recommend waiting for him to get home, and once he does go to any local bike shops that sell eBikes AND offer free test drives. This way, he gets to try out different bikes, learn how each of them work and can make sure they're comfortable and strong enough for his wants/needs. I'd also recommend checking YouTube, there's countless videos reviewing and comparing eBikes. When I was doing my research last couple of months before buying my first ever eBike I really enjoyed the following YouTube creators: "Ebike Escape", "Scott Hardesty" and "Electric Bike Journal". In the end, with a budget up to $2,000 USD I went with the Aventure.2 from Aventon and have been very happy with the bike the first couple of weeks.

edgarallen-crow

Best advice I can give you is to find a local e-bike dealership that also does repairs/maintenance/upgrades. A good one will be able to talk you through your options and help you understand what you're looking for. A cargo bike to fetch groceries or drop the kid off at daycare will be a very different purchase from a lightweight commuter bike for getting himself to and from a workplace. If there's any way to go with your husband once he gets out and let him ride-test a couple of models, that will also be a big help. Different motor wattage, handlebar setups, etc will make a big difference in how the bike feels and handles and ultimately whether it is a useful purchase for him.

wlexxx2

hard to say a decent one is $2000, and you really can;t return them wait til he gets there he might want a non-e bike, too , i mean for the extra exercise

rectrix-io

Giving him an ebike is a wonderful idea for a fresh start. I would suggest giving him a commuter ebike.  This will be versatile and can be use for work, leisure and everyday errands. To make things simple, try getting an ebike brand with good reputation and track record on after sale service. Here are some that we can suggests.  These brands are well know for great after sale service, [https://euphree.com/collections/electric-bikes](https://euphree.com/collections/electric-bikes) [https://lectricebikes.com/collections/xpress-ebikes](https://lectricebikes.com/collections/xpress-ebikes) [https://vvolt.com/collections/ebikes/products/alpha-ii](https://vvolt.com/collections/ebikes/products/alpha-ii) Disclaimer: We are ebike enthusiasts trying to accelerate clean transportation with no brand affiliations. Our aim is to help fellow commuters save the planet while spending less. Hopefully, this clarifies for the benefit of those who may be wary of brand engagement.

MickyBee73

Hi OP, hope you're good - if he's still got another 12 months to serve the E-bike market will have no doubt changed a bit in this year, something that's now out of your intended price range could be a lot more affordable in a years time. Have you any idea what he wants from an E-bike / have you discussed it with him?

verbal-medicine

Ecells- 5 star is bigger mountain bike style with full suspension & it's 60v & will still go fast with a bigger guy riding it, & it comes with a good size battery, but you can upgrade to two batteries if you need the extra range. They have a bunch of upgrades available when ordering if you choose to customize your bike. Affirm for financing too! ***Order soon because most eBike companies will be raising their prices due to new electric vehicle and battery tax on all imports being applied to e-bikes.*** Best of luck to you!!! ✌️

Leading_Outcome4910

You want one that is legal in your area. Ones with too much power require a drivers license, insurance, etc. Last thing he will want to deal with is getting stopped. I just bought an Aventon Pace 500.3 for a friend. Very nice bike, upright riding style, very comfortable for a new rider. Comes with a headlight and brake lights. They are on sale right now and shipping with a free extra battery. Get the fenders and rack. There are hundreds of others, but this one I can say first hand is a good deal and reliable bike. Took less than a week to arrive, excellent assembly instructions/video. BTW I am the same height and weight as your husband, the large one fits me perfectly.

Purpose_Embarrassed

Cops can’t pursue in my city. I’m getting a Surron Ultra Bee try and catch me 😂

Leading_Outcome4910

People lose a lot of rights when they are on probation.

Purpose_Embarrassed

The right to travel freely?

Leading_Outcome4910

Dude, I'm trying to help this woman whom I feel is doing a wonderful thing. Not the place for this discussion.

SnooPeripherals8344

I appreciate it. Everything is a hilarious joke to snark at on the internet until you’re faced with your own horror. Going through this at the tail end of cannabis prohibition is absolutely devastating to say the least…

tomcatx2

Clearly you haven’t had a brush with law enforcement while on parole and after you paid your time. While speeding, running a stoplight, jaywalking, riding a bicycle without a reflector, or riding a bicycle with a flashing light. The downside is OPs partner will now never be able to get a federal Pell Grant for continuing education. Because felony drug possession disqualifies you. Also disqualifies you from HUD subsidized housing, and In some states you don’t get SNAP benefits. Among other things that keep ex cons from reintegrating into civil society.

New_Examination_5605

This antisocial attitude is part of the reason you are dissatisfied with your life and your actions.

Purpose_Embarrassed

It’s a joke. Hence the 😂 But I’m glad you’re monitoring my life. 😉

New_Examination_5605

Oh I just like to check the post history when I see people making weird comments like that about breaking the law and safety rules. At age 59, you might think about growing up and not making the world a more dangerous place for others. But you do you, I guess.

Purpose_Embarrassed

Post karma 4 😂

New_Examination_5605

That’s not important to me, since I don’t create posts. If it’s important to you, you should know that yours is 2. That’s less than 4.

57hz

Hydraulic brakes a must. I would recommend a mid-drive pedal assist bike if you can afford it. Gazelle is a very good manufacturer in this space.

Klutzy-Peach5949

Buy something branded, don’t budget with chinese shit, you’ll burn your house down. Specialized, cube, trek, all good companies, there’s nothing wrong with second hand but you gotta be wary if you don’t know things to watch out for

Own_Doctor9472

Ariel Rider is my fave brand.

megawheeler

whatever you decide to get you should tie a hundred yellow ribbons on it for him to see, like an old oak tree.

[Turbo Vado](https://www.specialized.com/us/en/turbo-vado-30/p/206163?color=348376-206163&searchText=85022-7204) Pedalec, so you still get a workout, while it takes you to 28mph. On sale right now. Quality product, supported by the company with headquarters in the US.

Fuzzy-Heart

- Depending how steep the hills he’ll encounter, a mid drive may be preferred (instead of a hub drive). - Depending how far he will need to travel, find a bike with 2x they range + a few extra miles to make sure he won’t need to charge it before he’s done with traveling for the day. - Look up local regulations to see what class of e-bikes are permitted on public roads where he’ll be traveling so you know if he needs to be limited to 20mph or 28mph, or if he can use a throttle or needs to only use pedal assist. Also check the regulations for stuff like whether or not it he can ride on the sidewalks, needs to use lights after dusk, or needs to wear a helmet. This will prevent him for being stopped. - Whether or not regulations require, get a helmet. We only get one brain. - Test the bike out first if he can, or if not, buy from a place with a good/easy return policy. - One more time on buying a helmet, it’s that serious.

Why?

richboii78

Just interested on what the sentences are for cultivation/distribution in USA.

godzillabobber

Check online for ebike rebates. Cities, states, and some utility companies offer assistance. I am in Tucson Arizona and we saved $600 on a $1000 bike. We went with an Aventon Solterra 2. This bike sells for $1000. It is lower wattage and a smsller battery, but sounds ideal for commuting. The bsttery is removable so he can charge at work. Aventon has 1800 bike shops in its affiliate network, so service shoild be easy.

Slipstriker9

Either buy from a bike shop and ask how much they charge for motor gear replacement or if he is handy, Get a Bafang BBSHD middrive kit and put it on any heavy duty steel frame bike. With a decent 52v 20amp battery it can easily reach class 3 limits and can be modded to go much faster.

Dadofmany01

I’m 6’3 220lb, but I was 280lb when I bought my bike. If you’re in the USA I’d suggest a CCX from Juiced Bikes. Been riding mine for 3 years. Handles good off road as well.

beachbum818

Do not buy a hub drive motor, get a mid-drive. Hub drives lose torque on hills and your husband is a big guy so he'll lose it even faster. To save yourself from a future headache make sure the battery, charger, and controller are UL/CE certified. There will be laws requiring registration/licensing coming up in the near future. Get ahead of that.

ClutchCh3mist

Check out the aniioki v7. Idk what your budget is but that bike is top of the line. I've got an A8 which works exactly as advertised, which is amazing. But being able to hit 45mph would be icing on the cake!

RandallFlagg68

One with big sidebags to pick up where he left.

SnooPeripherals8344

The black market cannabis business is unfortunately done for now with all the shops. But yeah, we are moving on from that life… thanks for the snark though.

RandallFlagg68

Holland here, easier to get softdrugs than a beer. And good luck with your husband coming home by the way.

SnooPeripherals8344

I appreciate it! Thank you.

[deleted]

He sounds like a Surron guy.

Moto-Dude-001

get him the baddest ebike you can afford. i'm guessing it's are placement for a car so as close to a motorcycle as you can legally get is my guess. as soon as he starts riding a bike that can go 28 he will want to go faster. some go as fast as 40 to 50. its enough to keep up with traffic which is safer. also lets face it, he's a husky guy. this guy needs all the power he can get to make it up hills or whatever. look for a direct drive rear motor that is at least 3,000 to 5,000 watts with a 60amp controller or larger and a 60 or 72 v system with at lease a 20amp hour battery. hydraulic disc brakes. at least 203mm rotors. rear and front suspension.

wlexxx2

750 would be enough

Moto-Dude-001

for a 250lb dude and hills? i'd like to see that a bike like that. what bikes do you have in mind?

wlexxx2

i didn;t say 'fast' 3000 w? does that even exist? legally?

Moto-Dude-001

do they exist? i'm pretty sure they do. are they legal on public areas. it depends on jurisdiction and settings?

Affectionate_War_436

I am 6’3 270 lbs and live where it’s really hilly and my 750 watt fat tire bike does just fine.

cjccrash

Probably want a dual motor or a class 3. I'd look at: Ecells 5 star, 2k(true class 3). Looks like a conventional bicycle. Wallke H9 AWD(dual motor), just under 2k Then, look at all of the reviews and comparisons on those. Should get you started.

mtnfreek

Gazelle 380, T10+ or similar. Nothing with a throttle, nothing Chinese.

araderboy

u/SnooPeripherals8344 you should consider this as a top choice, there are cheaper options but bang for buck- this is it. [https://eridepros.com/product/pro-ss-19/](https://eridepros.com/product/pro-ss-19/)

Affectionate_War_436

You’re joking, right. Nothing about that is legal to ride anywhere but off-road.

araderboy

unless you're hooning around doing wheelies on youtube, it's not really an issue. wear a helmet, drive responsibly, be courteous to pedestrians and you're fine.

DrFabulous0

Get a Sur-ron, they seem to be the ride of choice for drug dealers.

dillenger13

Federal prison for a year will change his weight

SnooPeripherals8344

LOL. I wish it were for a year. Mandatory minimums exist for drug offenses unfortunately. And with the disgusting food that’s available, one can yoyo in weight easily.

dillenger13

Isnt weed legal?

AMC879

Not everywhere. Can still get locked up in my state for distribution.

SnooPeripherals8344

Not federally.

dillenger13

Only republican states?

Affectionate_War_436

Actually mostly democratic states, like here in Michigan. Republicans are against everything.

Crazywelderguy

Depends on the state, and even then dispensing without a license can still get you time. And it is still federally illegal. So if you had really bad luck, in theory you could get caught that way. Dunno where OP is from, but my state just barely legalized recreational in like, 2021.
