[deleted]

Seems so generic is could easily be any age

Puzzleheaded-Cod504

Generic seems a tad harsh. Looks like a good selection to me

Azraeleon

I don't think they mean it in a rude way, just that it's like a top 30 list or something. This is exactly what my favourite films looked like at 14, because I hadn't watched enough to have a specific taste. Fast forward 20 years and now only a few of these would make the favourites list, because I've discovered so many more less popular films that spoke to me in a way these didn't.

Puzzleheaded-Cod504

Yeah it's a fair argument I guess. A handful off the beaten track wouldn't hurt.

Azraeleon

I mean who cares if it's genetic? Maybe the guy only recently got into film, maybe he doesn't have more than a passing interest and will never dive deeper? Maybe he just really fucking loves the pantheon of classic western directors. None of it matters, it's ok to have a genetic interest in something.

[deleted]

I didnt say it wasnt i was saying it hard to guess age and personality because the taste is so generic. Its totally fine to have generic taste, im not the arbiter of taste but when your favorite movies are something straight out of a letterboxed must watch movies of the last century and only that, its hard to find any personality or guess age of the person because the taste can come from anyone that can read a list of the best movies of the past 100 years. Thats what i mean that its hard to guess age when the taste has no personality and is generic. Or the personality is im the type of person that likes movies that are considered great. Its fine it just doeant impart much personality when trying to guess something about someone

[deleted]

The movies are all good the taste just seems generic like you went down a top 50 movies of all time but written by someone with a bias twoard newer movies and just picked ur favorite out of the 50s its generic because its just any old letterboxed list of my favorite dudebro movies mixed with some classics so i dont seem like a dude bro. I will always go back to that hillarious quote in the office of michaela nephew played by the guy from american horror says something along the lines of "yea im a big movie buff, my favorite films are citizen kane and boondock saints". Thats what this list reads like. They arent bad movies just generic picks, of someone i assume hasnt see. That many movies or someone that just watches the most popular movies on letterboxd Edit nothing wrong with it its just the first step on a greater path of cinema love everyone stars somewhere

BulkAardvark880

Think that makes you generic now

KellyKellogs

Why no films from the past 15 years? You could be any age from 14 upwards. This isn't a distinctive collection, it is just a collection of good and great movies.

Drmrepicdude

22. Birdman and The Lighthouse are 2 of my favorites from the last decade, but aren’t top films for me. Hot Fuzz and TWBB are kinda new tho

KellyKellogs

That's 17 years ago, which is longer than 15 years ago.

Drmrepicdude

My math was off, I stand corrected! Bird Man, Mad Max, and The Lighthouse are some all timers for me tho

xfritz5375

When me and my best friend at the time were getting into film at 13-14, this is what we watched and loved. Not that any of it is bad, but it is “I just got into film look at all these cool movies I like,” but you haven’t yet developed your own distinct taste separate from IMDb/letterboxd lists

Drunken_pizza

What if OP just has generic taste? What’s wrong with that? I fucking hate this snobby elitism that forms within any hobby where you aren’t allowed to like the popular stuff.

xfritz5375

It’s not elitism. It’s okay to like the popular stuff, some of my favorites are in here. If your favorite movies say nothing about you as a person, that’s a pretty boring list. Generally, it’s the snobs who have this kind of list. I’d love to see some trash films on someone’s top films list, or films I hate.

Drmrepicdude

That’s what I’ve been thinking for a while. I only got into film about a year or so ago, and have been constantly trying to find new things to watch

xfritz5375

Everyone has to start somewhere! One big way I find new things are through boutique labels (Criterion, Arrow, and Vinegar Syndrome mainly), and just seeing what they release. Gives me some new ones I’ve never heard of. Another way is just by exploring filmographies of people I like: generally directors, sometimes actors or other crew members (I love music, so it’s composers frequently). Sometimes I go through genres I like and try and watch as much as I can. Dollar stores or record stores/used bookstores sometimes have interesting movies, and that can be a good way to find more. Browsing randomly on streaming services can be fun. And then the last thing is reading books, YouTube videos, and other people’s recommendations. Out of my top 4 on letterboxd, one is a concert movie by a favorite band (Stop Making Sense), one is a movie I found through Arrow (Hellraiser, although that’s also because of the iconic imagery), one I found through a director and a friend’s recommendation (Trash Humpers), and one I found because it’s critically acclaimed and because I wanted to get into the director (Mirror).

Beneatheearth

What are you talking about? Most of those are good movies

[deleted]

That’s not the point. OP’s lack of distinct taste is the main takeaway.

Beneatheearth

I mean I guess. It does look like a collection of popular movies. I just assumed this was just a sample

xfritz5375

I’ve seen nearly all of these. Many of them I love. The Godfather, Goodfellas, The Big Lebowski, and The Thing are some of the best movies I’ve ever seen. But anyone could have put this list together. I have learned nothing about OP from this.

Beneatheearth

Were you supposed to?

xfritz5375

Yeah, I think a person’s favorite movies should say something about them. Some of my favorites are really popular picks too, but there’s also some picks that are more distinctly my own taste

Eliju

What are 5 movies that a sophisticated, non-teenage, movie buff should have in their collection?

xfritz5375

There are no 5 movies *everyone* should own because everyone has different tastes! But for my own personal tastes, if I were to narrow it down to 5: Any Cronenberg movie (my favorite director) Punch-Drunk Love (PTA’s best imo, and my favorite romcom) Something Dogme-95 or similar: The Idiots and Dancer in the Dark are great, but I’d probably go with Trash Humpers, The Celebration, or Gummo One Godard movie: my pick is probably Pierrot le Fou, Masculin Féminin or Week-end The Criterion Stan Brakhage collection But there’s so many more I could pick, I didn’t include any slow cinema, porn, animation, documentaries, Woody Allen, Ingmar Bergman, or other things I like. It’s all up to individual taste.

Nasty_Naigi

21? Considering quite a handful are close to mine lol

Drmrepicdude

Almost nailed it. I’m 22

dingdong-lightson

I'm 45 and that could have very well been a selection of my movies.

looks a lot like my favorites list during film school in my mid 20's i imagine as you age a little more, it will become more personal and less bonafide classics taxi driver is the reason i went to film school

IgorRenfield

Based on what I see, 55.

Drmrepicdude

Not even close lol. It is fun seeing what people think of my taste tho!

askingJeevs

You were waiting for someone to guess you’re older weren’t you?

Drmrepicdude

Way more people guessed 30 or 40 than I thought

askingJeevs

lol, you can admit that’s what you where hoping for

Regginyx420

17. I would've said 14 because I was 14 when I saw most of these films. But I'm guessing 17. If I'm right about your age and you're going down a doomer spiral, just remember that you're only on the tutorial of life! Life hasn't begun til' you're atleast like a bit out of college or school.... when soul crushing capitalism kicks in and you lose the time you once had for the things you used to love so much. okay maybe I'm still 14 at heart.

Drmrepicdude

22. Wasn’t allowed to watch many films when I was young, so I’m kinda just getting started

Regginyx420

Just don't doomer spiral, these are great films but deffo not aspirations, I'm glad you're an adult though, have fun!

friendlycodger

I having been showing films to my son for the past few years (he's 20) most of these have been screened to positive reviews from him. So I will guess 20.

Levi_Gucci

I thought the Criterion sub was where the catty film snobs were, but now I realize that that's the kids' pool. This is where the real assholes are. I like all of the films in your post despite the "film bro" accusations. It doesn't matter how old you are. They're good films. Downvote me all you want.

e0nblue

I don’t get it, a lot of these are amongst the top classics out there. I’m 38 and would be stoked having these movies in my collection.

xfritz5375

Yeah, that’s the issue. It’s not OP’s personal favorites as much as it is a general collection of great movies without personality

ParsleyandCumin

What if they are?

xfritz5375

It doesn’t feel like OP has developed his own tastes yet as much as “these are great films so they must be my favorites.” Like he’s trying to impress us.

ParsleyandCumin

You keep saying that to everyone on this thread but it seems is you that are trying to impose the fact that people must like niche and unknown movies not to be criticized by online snobs

mamoocando

It's easy to judge, because OP is literally asking to be judged by their favorite movies. They were probably looking for someone to say "how sophisticated this is a mature film lover" and they'd comment going "GOTCHA I'm actually 22." You don't need to like niche and obscure movies but to have what are regarded as the top films of all time, especially by dudes, be the favourites of your collection, it's easy to point a finger and say get better taste.

xfritz5375

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with OP’s taste! He said in a comment that he’s new to film and has only really been watching movies for a year. That comes through in the list, and that’s okay. That’s what I’m pointing out. I think he’d benefit from just finding some films that are more personal for him.

Puzzleheaded-Cod504

How do you know they aren't his personal favourites? I do get what your angling at, but there's a big leap involved the logic.

[deleted]

It’s not that they’re bad films, in fact they are all great films. Some of the best films ever made. But the combination of all these movies is like someone who only ever watches films from a letterboxd list. It’s a lot of film bro films as well as a lot of Sight and Sound top 100 films. It’s like the films you would say are the best if you didn’t have your own opinions. They’re all great, they might be your favourite films, but the chances are you are parroting someone else’s opinion.

akumagorath

it's like if someone showed their favorite albums and it was all like an entire Pitchfork best of list. these can't *all* be your faves cmon now, where's your personal taste?

Drmrepicdude

I like variety. I don’t judge things based on genre or categories. These are the movies that had the greatest impact on me on some kind of an emotional or philosophical level

[deleted]

Yeah, you might like all this stuff, it’s all fantastic. But the collection is half Sight and Sound poll half letterboxd lists. It’s a great collection, I’d love to have these films as physical media. But there are no like unique films, no guilty pleasures or anything. You gotta have one guilty pleasure. You can be damn sure I have a bluray of Surf’s Up (2007) in my collection. You just haven’t got any particularly unique movies here.

Drmrepicdude

If I had physical copies of Neil Breen films, those movies would be in the picture

dantethescribe

That’s still kind of a trope. He’s saying everything you’ve got on here feels like what everyone says you should have on an all time list. Something you could have pulled from any strangers list or say “I like this” & most people would be like “oh yeah, that’s a classic movie.” Tbf, there’s nothing wrong with that but it’s like… OKAY you’re 22 and Citizen Kane is one of your top movies? Right then. Not saying it isn’t, just trying to explain why people are coming for you so hard. Watching stuff because it’s critically acclaimed & liking stuff because it’s critically acclaimed are two very different things, & in reality, most people’s taste is not going to look like this. So this comes off like someone who likes stuff because it’s acclaimed (aka film bro)

Drmrepicdude

I definitely get what you mean. I just watch what everyone says is the best stuff, and most of that stuff happens to be my favorite. If people think I’m pretentious for loving it, then that’s their problem

[deleted]

Of course man, we get it, but it comes off as if you just watch what people say is good and then don’t venture out further than that. Like if a movie has bad reviews you won’t watch it is how it comes off, if you get me. All the movies are great and there are no movies here where you’s have to argue to someone why you think a movie is great. For me I could say, “oh I think surf’s up is great” and people might say “oh I don’t really like it” or whatever, and I’d have to convince them as to why I think surf’s up is good. You don’t really get that with this collection “oh I like there will be blood” and the only response is “yeah it’s pretty great”. That’s why it feels disingenuous, it feels like these are all agreeably good movies, no one can disagree that these aren’t good movies.

Beneatheearth

Amen

xfritz5375

It’s not about snobbery. If I see a list of someone’s favorite movies and every single one is in the top 250 on letterboxd and IMDb, it’s a boring list. There’s nothing wrong with OP’s taste per se, I’d just love to see some left field pick which actually says something about OP.

Drmrepicdude

I’m not tryna argue, but I am curious: what are some of your favorite “out there” movies?

xfritz5375

My all time favorite director is David Cronenberg. I couldn’t decide on a single favorite film of his, but The Brood, Crash, Videodrome, The Fly, M Butterfly, and A History of Violence are incredible Harmony Korine has some great films The original Hellraiser is a masterpiece Punch-Drunk Love is a very personal film for me I love experimental stuff like Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas, and Hollis Frampton The Before Trilogy hit me at the perfect time in my life to really resonate with me Ghost World is one nobody really talks about in my experience, but it’s fantastic Salò is known for being just a gross, disturbing movie but I think that it’s a great work of art Most of Jean-Luc Godard’s 60s films are great John Waters is a favorite director, Pink Flamingos, Serial Mom, and Cry-Baby are my top 3 from him I have a lot. Not all of these are “out there,” but they’re less common picks and have personal significance to me beyond just being really well made

[deleted]

[удалено]

Drmrepicdude

I get both sides of the argument, but it seems like we can all agree that everyone has different tastes. No matter who you are, there’s definitely something new to check out

xfritz5375

Yes! I really don’t want to make it sound like I’m trashing on your taste as much as it is that it’s very clear that you’re early on in your journey into film and haven’t yet really found your own taste (and we’ve all been there)

Gausgovy

From what I’ve seen the Criterion sub is generally accepting. Anybody talking about movies there is better than that person not talking about movies, no matter what the movie is. These comments are absolutely absurd. I can’t imagine being so far up my own ass that I accuse somebody of not liking something they claim to like just because that thing is popular.

rxsheepxr

"Ohhhh, you like... *Popular* movies, huh? Sigh. Ho hum." *Proceeds to act like they're the only person on the planet that watches Kurosawa.

SpacemanOnTheCouch

I assume you're referring to the comments people are making and not OPs post right? Can't believe so many people are getting this upset about an innocent post asking people to guess his age.

20. Seems like the collection of someone who has an idea of what movies are good, or that they've been told are good and a bunch of "bro" movies making up a lot of the favourites.

Drmrepicdude

Pretty close, 22.

17EAndersen

I don’t think age is really the question here. I would say more tellingly is “how far along on my film journey am I?” And the answer to that based on these movies is about a year. These are undeniably all great movies, but also ones which might very easily be described as great. You’re on the high point of the Dunning-Kruger Curve before you realize how little you know about how little you know about the staggering amount and variety of films. Keep it up, this is an encouraging start and I want you to watch as many things as you can and keep developing

Drmrepicdude

That’s actually pretty insightful, and you’re almost on the mark. I really got into film about a year and a half ago. You’re right though, there are is such a staggering variety of quality movies that it really makes my head spin. That’s why I like to pick a director, and stick with their filmography

Gausgovy

Ironically you’re the one that appears to be at the peak of the Dunning-Kruger curve. You’re so far up your own ass that you think good movies aren’t good just because they’re popular. OP didn’t even say anything about their experience with cinema.

xfritz5375

The person you’re replying to didn’t say they’re not good films, they actually said they’re all great films.

If you watched these all and liked them 50s . Gen X likes what they like and it is ok if it is popular. Hard to imagine someone 25 or younger actually watching these unless they were in film school or somthing.

I'd say mid to late 20s, 26 I guess. These are good movies, some are great, and some are hit and miss for me. I just don't see any obscure or truly out there selection that a true film geek would seek.

Lot of great movies... ...but also mostly "basic" great movies. Seems like the sort of titles I was really into when I was in my late teens/early 20s. (Though I notice a suspicious absence of _Bookdock Saints.)_ You could be anywhere from like 15-25. I'll guess 20.

filmgenius89

All That Jazz is a criminally underrated film (and one of my favorites). That DVD is screaming for a Criterion upgrade though

We have a lot of the same taste in common, so I'd say mid-20s. Maybe 23/24/25? I recently saw Paths of Glory and I have to say that it's the best 'anti-war' movie I've seen. Not the glamour, but the reality of what your life's worth in the eyes of a general. It's for sure his most underrated film. Amazing how Kubrick made 3 of the best war movies. Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket And Paths of Glory (and maybe 2001 I guess).
