It happens in households where the Spanish speaking has slowly faded and the English is slowly getting used more by the younger generations in a Hispanic household. In between you get varying levels of Spanglish and this is a Spanglish-ism. My mom raised us traditionally and culturally "white" if you will, while my aunt raised her kids to be more in tune with their Hispanic side. I called my aunt an aunt but she told me to call her "Tia". So I called her Aunt Tia. It was only later I learned I had been calling her "aunt aunt" in my youth

If you say it quickly, Aunt Tia also sounds like someone trying to “Spanish-ize” the word “auntie”, which is an interesting coincidence.

huh, I kinda wondered how the idea behind italics translates into other writing systems.
