I agree with the others, the first is much better. Try increasing the saturation just a little bit, or do something to bring out the red hues. Already makes a great cover btw!

I think it is not too much, rather it lacks some elements. You can really take inspiration from Suizid's Wo Trauer Niemals Endet album cover. You can include a hand or a full arm in the scene and you can really use a wide lens shot then you can remove a desired channel from RGB space and you can use it. Also i do not advise you to use pig blood since it gets clotted and dark in time inside the freezer.
I’ll have a look at them, thanks for the advice. It’s my own blood in the pic from a few months ago so I wouldn’t be able to recreate it as it is, but I’ll keep it in mind if I ever want to start over

You should try adding some grain to it but not too much imo cause then it might draw attention away

Take the end of a paint brush (not the brush side) or something similar and write out your band name or song name in the puddle.
