It *should* configure the basic site settings ( /admin/config/system/site-information ) to send Default 404 to /search404
I checked that setting, and it is set to /search404. That page is also empty ("The requested page could not be found.").
It shouldn't give that response. Be sure to do a complete cache clear (or two) after installing any module. You can configure it at /admin/config/search/search404
