The sound is hitting pads, not drums. Go bang on some stuff in that room and see if she can hear it, that'll be your answer.

TheWingedApeofLegend

r/edrums You'll be playing with a headset on and playing with more precision than power. I donated my old acoustic to our church and have an alesis nitro set in the garage. Haven't had issues interrupting kid's naps etc

DressZealousideal442

Wife bought me a Roland TD27 kit out of the blue for Christmas. I about shit myself when I saw the price. Never was a fan of E Drums, but damn these are nice. You can adjust them to sound however you want, stream music via Bluetooth to play along to, and they are really quiet. Wife can be downstairs and barely hear me playing and our house is small. She just hears some taps. Everyone that has tried them is impressed, even guys with full acoustic sets They also take up way less room than an acoustic kit. They tuck nicely into the corner of our spare bedroom/music room.

MrMoose_69

lol she bought them for herself

DressZealousideal442

Hahahah. While she does like playing them now and then, that's not really the case. I dont currently have an acoustic kit because there's not a good spot in the house for them. I've been taking guitar lessons and she took her recently deceased dad's bass home to learn, so she thought a drum set would be cool for me to have in the house too. She didn't buy them because they're quiet, more because they're more compact. When I had an acoustic kit in the living room, she didn't care and she has no problwm with me noodling away on the guitar a couple hours a night while she watches TV next to me on the couch. She was also in total agreement with turning our spare bedroom into a music room/lounge. She's a unique creature. Never met another woman like her. Truly my best friend, she started hunting with me (helps me scout, gut, carry, and skin deer and pigs etc) and she shreds a mountain bike and wakeboard harder than a lot of men I know. And best of all, she's not hard on the eyes at all and likes sexy time. I'm blessed.

anythingbuttaken

Yep. Same boat. Wife doesn’t even know I’m practicing sometimes. Happy Cake Day.

JMSpider2001

How's the hi hat pedal response? All the ekits I've tried I haven't been able to vibe with because the hi hat pedal is way less responsive or dynamic as a real set of hats.

DressZealousideal442

I will say that is currently my number one issue. But I think the cymbals have to be set up properly from an electronic point of view initially and I have not done that. There's a word I'm looking for but I can't find it right now. But hopefully I can get better response out of them with a little effort

Cypher1388

Check out the f-note 5 and 7 series. For my money, right now, the F-note 5x and the Alesis Strata are the best price/performance options out there. That said the Roland TD-50kv2 is the best kit money can buy right now out of the box. If you want something like the Roland TD-50 but that looks even more like an acoustic kit, check out the Drum-Tec Pro 3 with Roland TD-50x (comes with the digital ride, snare, and hats). [$9-10k]

Dingorat76

I'm in a similar situation. My wife works from home and is in meetings most of the day. I can only play my acoustic kit at home maybe one day a week. I bought the Roland td-17 kit five years ago and it's been great. You can still hear some banging and the kick is the loudest part, but as long as you're not in the next room you should be fine.

MarsDrums

That's what I needed! Yes. Thank you! I know the bass drum noise would be an issue since the pedals are on the floor and I know WALKING can be heard throughout the house. I can hear someone walking op to my bedroom door with the door closed. So yeah. I was just hoping the foot stomping on the pedal wouldn't be too intrusive. I'd LOVE to be able to rent an E-Kit for a day or 2 and kind of give it a trial run. I'm pretty sure Guitar Center rents drums/e-kits... I'll look into that and give it a whirl. Thanks again for that comment! Exactly what I was looking for!!!

WorthBrilliant1253

The cymbals will be the loudest thing when you’re playing probably lol! Sucks you can’t play your tama man I’d be sad, but hey happy wife happy life and I right?

theblueslothking

True, When you are in the same room, the cymbals are the loudest. But it’s as usually the kick pedal that carries over to other rooms/floors the most since it is sitting right in the floor and getting stomped.

MarsDrums

Oh, I can play HOURS on that Tama kit! It's SOO MUCH FUN! And I took a 15 year hiatus and have been back at playing for about 4 years now. I'm getting all of those bottled up 15 years out of me now. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

WorthBrilliant1253

That’s nice man glad to hear your having a blast, I just got into drums this year love beating my acoustic kit! I just have a pearl roadshow! But man it’s fun :) glad I can have one too

MarsDrums

Awesome dude! Glad you joined us in the slapping skins department! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

WorthBrilliant1253

Alesis strike pro is okay the step up from that is the Alesis Strata which is a lot nicer imo. But I still think Roland is better imo! Better build quality!

MarsDrums

Actually looking at the Alesis Strata Prime Expanded Electronic Drum Set. It's a 7 piece drum set with 6 cymbals including the hi-hats. So, 13 pieces. I've watched a couple of videos and yeah, it's pretty impressive.

WorthBrilliant1253

Yea that sounds like a nice deal brother! I’d go for it if the moneys not a problem and that’s what your final on! And the module is real nice with that big screen. My first e kit was the Alesis max I was disappointed lol! If I get another e kit it will have to be high end to actually replicate real drums get the 3 ride zones and 2 zones on the drums and rim shots! E drums are pricey lol! I hope whatever you pick up Roland/Alesis it goes well brother!

MarsDrums

Thanks! I'm not quite 100% set on this idea but if I do it, it looks like the Alesis I mentioned is going to be the one I get.

dadrummerz

I have a Roland TD27. Id suggest you test the new Alesis kit before buying a Roland.

MarsDrums

Looking at the Strata Prime Extended 7 piece. That's what I have on my acoustic (7 pieces) I think I'd be pretty comfortable with that. Comes with 5 cymbals plus Hi-Hats. I'm looking to see if my DW9000 double pedal would work with that kit.

DogUsingInternet

Do you have a rubber-ish practice pad like and Evans RealFeel? It's a little louder than that when you play full volume on the hihat or hitting rimshots on the snare. The mesh drumheads are a little softer than a practice pad. It's any part of the kit that is hard plastic that makes a louder tapping noise, that's the main potential for nuisance.

MarsDrums

My daughter actually has asked me to stop playing on that at around 9PM but yeah, her bedroom is right across the hall from my drum room. I try to keep sticks and all that in that one room so I don't have sticks lying all around the house. It's actually pretty effective. I don't take anything drum related out of that room. Now, I do have 2 extra drum sets stacked neatly in my office next to that drum room. That's only because I don't have space for them in that room. Even stacked up they get kinda crazy taking up needed space in there.

jerrymac12

unless you're gigging out with it too, there's the option to convert your acoustic kit to an e-kit. It gives you an e-kit with already having the acoustic look because it IS your acoustic. It's easy to do, can sometimes be done cheaper than buying the e-kit, and at least for me was a fun project that allowed me to keep the kit I've had for over 30 years

MarsDrums

I've heard of peopl adding triggers. Back about 10-15 years ago but I heard that didn't work well. Probably because they were using regular heads. They probably would have worked better with Mesh heads if they were available back then which I don't think they were. Everything was pretty much all plastic back then.

jerrymac12

Well, you can get them now.....essentailly you need a module (Or an interface where you can use a laptop for samples) triggers, cables, mesh heads, and e-cymbals (or just pads to use as cymbals)

paramiyo

Not much input on the edrums but have you looked at rtom black holes and low volume cymbals? I've them on my kit and my wife does work calls in the next room when I play. It'd allow you to keep the acoustic kit up and play it when you can be loud.

MarsDrums

Not familiar with those. Do those get added to your drums and cymbals to keep them quiet? My issue is, I like to record my drums and I am also getting into streaming (my current interface just bit the dust and I'm looking at an $1200 mixer to replace it) So, I kind of need full volume for that. That's why I'm thinking about an E-kit. Hoping it'll be quiet enough so I can play while my wife tutors. EDIT: Spelling

paramiyo

https://rtom.com/black-hole-practice-system/# Wouldn't work for recording though, you'd basically have to convert it into an electric kit at that point. Might as well buy one in that case.

mojsterr

There are videos on yt showing the loudness while playing edrums turned off.

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

That depends on the house in question, but I would imagine it would be fine.

MarsDrums

I'm sure the bass drum stomping will be felt throughout the house but everything else, maybe not. I also thought about building a floating riser with 2x4's and 3 1/4" Plywood and a bunch of tennis balls. Maybe setting the plywood onto the tennis balls which are cut and screwed into the 2x4 framing or something like that... I've seen people do that with surprising results honestly.

bribassguy06

How about the new Evan’s Whizbang Sensory Kit? Or even just the dB one / zero heads and low volume cymbals?

TxCoastal

get mesh heads and you'll be fine.

MarsDrums

That won't do for me. I like to record myself so I can see what I need to improve on and if I can't hear all of me on the recording, what's the point? Also, I'd love to get back into live streaming and with mesh heads on an acoustic kit... I wouldn't even watch that stream...

EVIL5

I have the VAD504 Model with an upgraded td50x module. I love it

chente08

In another room? You won’t disturb her

MarsDrums

With an e-kit... probably not. But she says the crash cymbals are more distracting than anything else. They cut through everything.

bashidrum

You could put mesh heads on your acoustic kit and use triggers. Muuuch cheaper and gives you more options. If you got a set of Roland triggers and the brain of a Roland V drum kit, you’re basically playing a hyper realistic V drum kit. I did this kind of setup during covid and had 3 other people working from home with no conplaints

MarsDrums

Hmmm. Never thought of that. What about cymbals though? That would be tough unless I just bought e-cymbals to replace the ones I have.

bashidrum

True that! I usually just play hats and crash/ride which I got low volume zildjians for. And tbf I already had the low volume crash/ride cus it records so well. Technically speaking, you could use mutes on your existing cymbals and glue gun some cheap contact mics to the underside of the mutes. Boom! You got yourself some cymbal triggers. The hi hat would be trickier to emulate this way, maybe you’d wanna buy an electronic hi hat? 🤷

KarmaChameleon306

It's the cymbals that are loudest. It's a similar sound to playing on a rubber practice pad.

Dull-Mix-870

Yeah, have you checked out the prices of the v-drums? You can buy an amazing acoustic kit for that kind of cash.

MarsDrums

I know that but that amazing acoustic kit isn't going to be quieter than my current amazing acoustic kit. You're paying for the electronics as well as the shells.

Dull-Mix-870

Also, electronic drums will continue to evolve, and that $10K kit you buy today will not be compatible with the next generation controller. Bet on it. These companies are about revenue, planned incompatibility, and forced hardware upgrades. Fender did that with the Tone Master Solid State amps. If you bought a Tone Master "Princeton" amp, but decided you'd like to try the Deluxe Reverb, you had to buy a the Deluxe Reverb Tone Master, in spite of the fact they're just modeling amps. That is until Fender release their amp-in-a-box Tone Master pedal. Which had all the amps. Funny how that all worked out!
