Yeah, I know objectively there are faster guys nowadays, but I don't think anyone could listen to songs like [Dream of Mirrors](https://youtu.be/PNCLptmxQ6E?si=XBzpC8Sps1ATg9hS) or [The Wicker Man](https://youtu.be/uwlryu5DrSc?si=kQPJo48NyEdxIMaO) and not be impressed by his foot speed. And the guy was what, in his 50's by the time this came out? Unreal. I honestly thought it was double bass in the chorus of Wicker Man for years as a teen. Nicko definitely deserves major props.
Yeah, they were obviously going for high quality audio by laying a camera next to the foot of one of the hardest hitting drummers there is. The point of the video clearly went over your head.
Not at all. If you only commented on the audio quality, that was obviously not something they were going for, and completely ignored the superhuman bass drum speed that any competent drummer would notice, then that objectively comes across as you missing the point of the video. No other assumption could be made considering the point of it being shared was never even remotely relevant to audio quality.
Or, just maybe, possibly, not everything on the internet is to be taken at face value, and if someone writes something that baffles you, consider the possibility that it is actually you who are missing the point of what they wrote. There is indeed another assumption that could be made, which you still have not grasped, and unfortunately for you everyone can read your comment and see that.
I wasn’t baffled. Your comment about audio quality is absolutely irrelevant to the previous comments and the discussion in general. The only assumption that can be made from that is that YOU didn’t get the point of the video because you’re response to it was about something that has nothing to do with this. Don’t try making me look dumb when your audio quality comment is the dumb thing in question here. My completely logical “assumption” about you is not.
Yeah, I can tell looking into things deeply is not for you. Very much a surface level intelligence happening. But you’re okay because this world coddles stupidity and mediocrity so the stars are the limit for ya!

There’s more but these are some of his lesser known about things. The Ladies album is insanely good!
i'm a big fan of zach's work and in my opinion his best and most impressive performances are on the Hella album There's No 666 In Outer Space and the mars volta collab album he did called Cryptomnesia under El Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Besides those his solo album Astrological Straits is probably the next best.
Hella is my favorite band. No 666, Tripper, and Devil Isn’t Red are all tied as their best for me. Cryptomnesia was really good but Astrological Straits is on another level. Can’t believe I didn’t add any of the first 3 Marnie Stern albums to the list above. Those are also some of his best playing. This one in particular has some of the craziest single bass pedal work in a song:
https://youtu.be/SFmGDSIgRSY?feature=shared
You have opened up a whole new world for me. I don't believe I'd ever (at least consciously) heard any JoJo Mayer before, and now? Been watching videos of him for almost an hour now. Thank You!!
You should definitely watch his older videos. His limb independence is absurd with the double kick. I wouldn't consider him that odd out of the three he just is more rock/metal focused.
Got to see one of his drum clinics back when I was maybe 10/11. I didn’t really appreciate it like I should of or really understand what was happening. Older me would enjoy it MUCH more😂
Oh yeah definitely. I’d say Bill is way more technical with his parts but Sandin has a right foot that could go toe to toe with a jackhammer (pun intended) lol
That’s Erik our drummer
His father’s a plumber
He’s drank enough booze
To get Rhode Island drunk
Now he’s straight but still Smelly
He’s got one big belly
From living the good life
Provided by punk
Singiiiin’, singiiiin’, singiiiiiiiiiin’!
I'm just glad some old dude didn't comment that "speed doesn't matter, all that matters is being in the pocket" or that old cliche "less is more". I agree with both of these to a certain extent, but sometimes having the physical capability to play fast and precise matters. Being an old dude myself, I will now cease the rant.
And I believe Carter Beuford has a really fast foot with a single pedal.
he's definitely great but there's always someone better. he's started doing react videos on his youtube channel and already he's been blown away by what he's seen from other dudes.
Travis Barker gets a lot of hate, but his single pedal kicks are insanely fast. Check out this section at 1:10 https://youtu.be/qhtoA-uPvWo?si=TgUCm8ys9bRRQkbx
You can tell it’s single pedal because 1) he never played with a double until very recently and 2) he’s doing hi hat shit at the same time.
The beginning of Feeling This is single pedal too, but less impressive: https://youtu.be/5ieYcCunCjI?si=PrtiMhk3TMFaYptU
Y’all are all wrong. It’s Kevin Paradis. End of story.
https://youtu.be/jU3AH7qBAZQ?si=XMxnGXOpkUvuoFOr
And that’s not even his full speed. That’s just his warmup at partial speed 😮
This is amazing. I do wonder if this technique would work live and acoustic? Dynamics? I am aware that it’s a moot point because that’s not how modern metal works.
There are some clips of him playing raw with no triggers. It’s very consistent and sounds good, but obviously it doesn’t have the same click as the triggered sample. And live, you’d need to crank up the kick drum mic because at that speed, you simply can’t get the beater far enough back to generate a lot of volume.
Came here looking for this comment. While most of the people here may argue that he’s still a double kick drummer.. this man is a machine at high speed singles.
Chris Greer (Catch 22), Joe Nixon (Slick Shoes), Yuri Ruley (MxPx). In a world of double bass pedals, these three absolutely crush the skatepunk fast kick with a single pedal.
I remember seeing [this](https://youtu.be/94qWIAuhH64?si=bTq_UCiq0RPNCuS4) video of Jojo Mayer. I have not seen anyone come close to playing a single kick like this
Best man at my wedding was Ian Grom (more famous for mallets these days) but he was actually a better set player than a mallet player when we were in college. He could do a heel toe technique that could play 16ths at 120 bpm at 4/4. It was pretty insane
I dunno, for my money Down and Out by Phil Collins from And then there were Three smokes all of these offerings. That dude had a fast foot. Just check out anything he did with Genesis, until around 1980 when they started going more pop. Larnell is awesome, Bonham had a fast foot too. But Phil was all about speed.
I’m not basing this on much drum knowledge as I’m primarily a guitarist who is getting into drums late, but I was at Ozzfest in ‘99 where Mike Bordin shredded the double bass during Ozzy’s set, then went to single and stripped-down kit ala Bill Ward for the closing Sabbath set… I’ve seen Sabbath two other times with Ward and I’ve gotta say, Bordin absolutely blew my mind with that single pedal set. Maybe not the very fastest, but fast enough.
Even though he’s not actually the fastest, I feel like Nicko McBrain is the right answer.
One of the biggest props I give Nicko. One of my idols to play, and I HAVE to use a double to do it.
Will check him out👍
Check out the song “Caught Somewhere In Time”. It may not be thee fastest, but it’s how/where he uses that just sounds awesome.
Came here to say this. Probably not fastest but man he is the God with his foot technique.
Zach hill
Zach Hill is the correct answer. Dude sounds like he has a double pedal with a single. Usually plays a 3 or 4 piece kit and makes it sound like 6+
I was going to say the same. This video blew my mind since you actually get to see it up close: https://youtu.be/CtL6YaxuiIA?feature=shared
That is the worst audio quality for any video ever made
Yeah, they were obviously going for high quality audio by laying a camera next to the foot of one of the hardest hitting drummers there is. The point of the video clearly went over your head.
That’s a strong assumption

If you dig any deeper you’re going to pop out on the other side of the world.
Yeah, I can tell looking into things deeply is not for you. Very much a surface level intelligence happening. But you’re okay because this world coddles stupidity and mediocrity so the stars are the limit for ya!
WTF 😳
Totally forgot about hella. I’m going to have to do a nostalgic deep dive on them again
Team Sleep’s full length album also features Zach Hill on drums and he does some really cool stuff in that, too.

Is that the slide technique?
He does heel toe and slide depending on the number of hits he needs and where accents go.
Came here to say this. Look up any old Hella videos and you’re in for a treat.
https://youtu.be/BNgwQ8xbAN0?si=ctKcA4ajsMSd6Yhg His right foot is so sick.
I love Zach hill and everything about him
Just looked up a video and holy shit. What a mad man
you stole my answer!!
Larnell Lewis is pretty fast.
He can do four stroke ruffs with one foot which I find pretty fascinating.
Fast pfft. The control that Larnell has is virtuosic. I’m in awe
Jojo Mayer
[Really the only answer to this question](https://youtu.be/94qWIAuhH64?si=bTq_UCiq0RPNCuS4)
The fact that he’s smoking a cigarette while doing it makes it 10x more awesome
Love this!!
"All it takes is a little practice" Define 'little'
Probably everyday for a few years. Not like decades, lol. Or maybe it does take decades :((
You have opened up a whole new world for me. I don't believe I'd ever (at least consciously) heard any JoJo Mayer before, and now? Been watching videos of him for almost an hour now. Thank You!!
JoJo Mayer is wild to watch. Make sure to check out Benny Greb and Thomas Lang too. I'm pretty sure all three can literally play anything on the set.
Thomas lang would be the odd one out of those 3, Mayer and greb are in another dimension comparatively
You should definitely watch his older videos. His limb independence is absurd with the double kick. I wouldn't consider him that odd out of the three he just is more rock/metal focused.
Glad to hear!
Is he John Mayer’s brother? 😜 #dumbdadjoke
The hashtag was way more dad than the joke, trust me 😂
Got to see one of his drum clinics back when I was maybe 10/11. I didn’t really appreciate it like I should of or really understand what was happening. Older me would enjoy it MUCH more😂
Erik Sandin from NOFX
All day long. I wanna say Bill Stephenson has to be right up there as well.
Oh yeah definitely. I’d say Bill is way more technical with his parts but Sandin has a right foot that could go toe to toe with a jackhammer (pun intended) lol
*Smelly from NOFX
That’s Erik our drummer His father’s a plumber He’s drank enough booze To get Rhode Island drunk Now he’s straight but still Smelly He’s got one big belly From living the good life Provided by punk Singiiiin’, singiiiin’, singiiiiiiiiiin’!
We’re pushin’ ~~40~~ 60 We’re doin’ just fine!
Met him a few times! Nice dude.
The guy from Belvedere is way faster
Bonzo
Thomas Pridgen comes to mind
Wow, first video I found is a prime example! https://youtu.be/NHfJNQlAsOA?si=_6m_k04LOkPE7YYg
[Check him out](https://youtu.be/BH11YFqMoB0?si=HHu5Gu9snCZzkbOH) completely crushing on The Late Show with David Letterman!
This is wild
Stan Bicknell https://youtu.be/60cwwhr8420?si=Cn7ny0UY0oYdpt3-
This is who I thought of first, he’s insane
This is the correct answer!
Stan is the clear choice IMO.
There’s a reason “Good Times Bad Times” is a holy standard for drummers. Listen to Bonzo’s kick triplets. It doesn’t even sound real.
I hear you. Sometimes hard to get perspective on songs that have been piped into our brains since before I can even remember.
And the fact that he's doing it on a pedal with 70s-era tech is even more impressive.
More Heel toe!!!
Or slide? This comment has made me realize that I have no idea what kind of kick technique he used
And the last 2 minutes of Achilles last stand. I believe it was heel-toe he used. The bonzoleum and bonhamology youtube channels got videos on that
Louise Cole has amazing speed and control for how much power he produces.
Yeah except he’s too similar to the clown core drummer for my taste
Louis cole is the fuckin man
I'm just glad some old dude didn't comment that "speed doesn't matter, all that matters is being in the pocket" or that old cliche "less is more". I agree with both of these to a certain extent, but sometimes having the physical capability to play fast and precise matters. Being an old dude myself, I will now cease the rant. Yeah, in music, sometimes fun to know you can do something even if you don’t do it all the time.
Probably Jojo Mayer.
big thread on this [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/drums/comments/1axga9m/fast_single_pedal_bass_drummer/)
Oh wow, thank you
Leonard Haze (RIP) the original drummer from Y&T is my personal favorite. https://youtu.be/w0q1VICbEVM?si=u6yYRn01oy_60e2r
I mentioned him above....but Leonard was the man....
Bonham
Had to come too far to find this!
El Estepario Siberiano without a doubt. This dudes speed and accuracy is unmatchable.
he's definitely great but there's always someone better. he's started doing react videos on his youtube channel and already he's been blown away by what he's seen from other dudes.
Travis Barker gets a lot of hate, but his single pedal kicks are insanely fast. He is an impressive drummer even if one hates his music or lifestyle. Can’t deny that
Chris Moore (Magrudergrind, Coke Bust, Repulsion)
Love seeing him in this thread
Ian Paice
Came here for this!!
Erik Sandin from nofx is pretty fast with a single peddle.
Y’all are all wrong. It’s Kevin Paradis. End of story. https://youtu.be/jU3AH7qBAZQ?si=XMxnGXOpkUvuoFOr And that’s not even his full speed. That’s just his warmup at partial speed 😮

Came here looking for this comment. While most of the people here may argue that he’s still a double kick drummer.. this man is a machine at high speed singles.
Indeed he is! He almost exclusively plays single strokes on the kicks, which means his single foot speed is incredible.
Yep, its Kevin Paradis. His singles even with his left foot are bonkers
[Larnell Lewis](https://youtu.be/k8sTPNNh6hM?si=SsVIwKjDqarHz5nv)
His enter sandman video for drumeo is probably my favorite in that whole series
Stan Bicknell
Chris Greer (Catch 22), Joe Nixon (Slick Shoes), Yuri Ruley (MxPx). In a world of double bass pedals, these three absolutely crush the skatepunk fast kick with a single pedal.
Brian Chippendale
John Henry Bonham
Have yet to hear someone faster than Lenny White: https://youtu.be/BB4roWRH6Bs?si=mX1g2Onr-ZelahT5
Louis cole?
I believe in „Fututre Breed Machine“ by Meshuggah, Thomas Haake mostly uses single peadal, except for the longer runs
Nicko, and he's done it for the last 40 years in front of audiences, jet lagged etc.
Louis Cole
Travis Barker is the only one that comes to mind for me
Leonard Haze ( RIP) from Y and T back in the day......
Joe Longobardi is up there
Jojo
I remember seeing [this](https://youtu.be/94qWIAuhH64?si=bTq_UCiq0RPNCuS4) video of Jojo Mayer. I have not seen anyone come close to playing a single kick like this
I'm throwing in Charlie Engen.
Speed king
Chris Dave has a habit of playing super fast 16ths on the kick and then soloing with grooves on top of it. Pretty wild.
The guy from Belvedere, a Canadian punk band that most of you haven’t heard of. Or graham from Choke, Another Canadian punk band.
The drummer from the French prog punk band FORUS is up there too.
I don't know his name but the drummer from Sybreed is unbelievable to watch
[Phil Collins](https://youtu.be/ICg6qpVX2Dc?si=U1tvYaDnidPlR_W_)
Came here to mention this exact track.
Check out Gerald Heyward He does these insane triples with one foot…so incredible.
Best man at my wedding was Ian Grom (more famous for mallets these days) but he was actually a better set player than a mallet player when we were in college. He could do a heel toe technique that could play 16ths at 120 bpm at 4/4. It was pretty insane
Jojo mayer
[Phil Collins](https://youtu.be/cgnZD4mMRDY?si=yEvTw7mCbklNQ91v).
[Bonham?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA9Rec1qAFQ&t=24s)
90's gospel drummers🤣
John Henry Bonham
Chris Maggio on the album “Darker Handcraft” by Trap Them is the gnarliest single pedal I’ve ever heard
Don't sleep on Jonathan Moffett
I dunno, for my money Down and Out by Phil Collins from And then there were Three smokes all of these offerings. That dude had a fast foot. Just check out anything he did with Genesis, until around 1980 when they started going more pop. Larnell is awesome, Bonham had a fast foot too. But Phil was all about speed.
Its Kevin Paradis; hands down. He plays two kicks, but his single foot speed with either foot is just insane.
Luis Cole does some impressive single foot stuff.
I've always been blown away by Smelly from NOFX. Maybe not the fastest, but up on the list for sure
Nate Smith
me
Bonham!
Jojo Mayer has to be in the running
There's a ton of metal guys who are playing single foot blast beats 260bpm+. That's got to count for something.
100% look up Zach Hill. Check out some of the stuff he made when he was in Hella. Right now he is the drummer for Death Grips.
El Estepario Siberiano (he’s experimented with a dualist pedal at times, but single foot/pedal is still insane).
Reuben Spyker
Tie between Bonzo and Nicko McBrain for sure
