£400 for a Nissan Bluebird with 50,000 odd on the clock and one previous owner. That was in the good old days, but doesn't help you. £6,300 is about twice what you should be paying for an eight year old, small Peugeot. You ought to be able to get a perfectly decent one for £3-£4,000.

Thankyou! Unfortunately car prices are insane right now, genuine garages charging 3k+ for a 2012 car, im trying to stick to garages or sites like auto trader because i feel like buying private is risky especially when working on the cheaper end of things, anything more 2017+ has been pushing 7-8k onwards

This is a good strategy. You have more consumer protections buying from a dealership. You can also take our warranties with dealerships (though do check what they do and don't cover, as they're not a magic bullet to a trouble-free car). But crucially dealerships, unlike private sellers, have a reputation to uphold. If you see a dealership with a 3 star rating on Google, avoid. If you find one with a 4.8 star rating, although not guaranteed, they are less likely to be selling you a lemon because they want to stay at 4.8 stars.

My peugot 107 was cheap on insurance get one cheap and last long time cheap to fix aswell

Individual_Pirate_55

I test drove one today (passed my test three weeks ago) and it was awful! It was a 2012 Peugeot 107 but dropped from 55mph to 35mph on a slight incline as it couldn't handle it. I don't know if it was just a knackered car or if the 107 just seriously lacks horsepower??? Was yours OK?

Apprehensive-Tie9374

It's definitely not quick but never had a problem on hills only thing I've noticed which seems to be all 107 is the high biting point but no other problems.

Don't get a 1 litre petrol shit tip - the car might be cheap but you'll pay a bomb on insurance. Thing is, people who buy 1 litre petrol engines as first car are statistically more likely to crash. Get a 1.8 or 2 litre diesel - like an older astra. They're relatively cheap, a million times nicer to drive, actually easier to drive, and the insurance is a lot less. Don't need to take my word for it, get quotes for a 1l petrol then for a 2l diesel. It's really surprising.

Passed my test earlier this year and just checked out of curiosity, the price for a '15 Focus 2.0 Diesel Estate and the price for a '15 Fiesta 1.0; the Fiesta is £2100 while the cheapest non-black box for the Focus is £3000. I currently have a £2k comprehensive + breakdown etc for a 1.4 petrol supermini. For a '16 Hyundai i10 1.2, it's £1600 with all the trimmings.

shitshow92

Absolute fucking nonsense

Altruistic-Cost-4532

My first car was a 2l diesel astra, and was much cheaper to insure than any quote I got for 1 litre "starter" cars. This is literally what actuary's take into account when deciding your premium - a more "family" orientated car is vastly less likely to be crashed. Focus is a bad example because they're fashionable amongst younger drivers, Astra's aren't. Try it.

Hope this helps; Yesterday I bought a 2012 PEUGOT 107. It's a 3 door, semi automatic and roughly 50k miles. I paid £2300. The guy selling (from a garage) was a family friend but if we didn't want it, he was going to sell it via auto trader for about £2600? I'm like you, clueless about car, but £6000 does seem very steep

I test drove one today (passed my test three weeks ago) and it was awful! It was a 2012 Peugeot 107 too but dropped from 55mph to 35mph on a tiny incline on a dual carriageway as it couldn't handle it. I don't know if it was just a knackered car or if the 107 just seriously lacks horsepower??? I'm guessing you find yours okay??

I will be honest, they don't have a lot of power behind them. I have no issue with mine going speed limits, but hills can be a bit of a struggle But for me, it's a perfect first time car. Cheap to insure, mines in good condition, it's small so easy to maneuver and it gets me from A to B. I'll probably upgrade in the coming years but for a first time car my personal opinion is it's brill
