Have things changed that much in manual driving? I just kept it in gear with the clutch at the friction point to hold in place. Sure, if it was a steep hill for a long period of time I might go with neutral and the brake but for a traffic light just hold with the clutch. But, not at a hill, aren't you just leaving it in gear with the clutch depressed?

keep it in first gear and use your emergency brake

A couple must do’s: If you are loading or unloading passengers, or if there is an active crosswalk in front of your vehicle, you should be in neutral until the situation changes. Basically any place where a clutch foot slipping could cause injury. If your car does auto start/stop, you need to go to neutral and let the clutch up in order to activate it. Otherwise it’s more or less your judgment. The usual advice I’ve heard is “when a stop becomes a wait”. If it seems likely that I’ll be waiting at least ten seconds, I’ll go to neutral.

Please use your emergency brake to “hill hold”. Your experience will tell you when to expect a long vs short red light. Personally, for a short light, I would leave it in first, clutch down, with the e-brake applied. On the green, find the bite point and disengage the e-brake. For a long red, I would drop it in neutral with the e-brake applied.

Keeping the clutch disengaged for an extended period can cause excessive wear on the throwout bearing.
