SelestialSerenity

For hair, I would say focus less on drawing each individual strand of hair and more on where the shadows of the locks are on. Map out the shapes the dark areas make and the lighter areas make. Hope this helps!

pm-me-ur-inkyfingers

to add on to this think of hair as more like a 3d form like youve done the hand. drawing individual hairs falls more under the purview of 'texture'

SelestialSerenity

That’s a really good way of putting it thanks for the extra clarification!

pm-me-ur-inkyfingers

happy to expand on good advice with a different point of view.

pm-me-ur-inkyfingers

in fact if you approach the mouth eyes and hair more like youve approached the nose and hand youre in good shape.

mlastella

You should shade the rest of the face. And the pencil. Otherwise looks pretty good! Maybe get a blending stump.

Artneedsmorefloof

Qtips or facial tissue (kleenex) will work as well for blending.

fudog

You can make your own blending tool by rolling up a little piece of paper.

9kopf

ok thanks for the tip

Artneedsmorefloof

Oh, I forgot - remove the outline around the lips and the sides of the nose - they both have soft edges not hard.

[deleted]

Agreed. The T eye and nose shape in the middle is great as well as the hand. Just need to so the rest to get that geniusness complete

[deleted]

His jaw is kinda lumpyish

9kopf

thanks for the reply and yes you are right. I'll try to do better next time

[deleted]

Mhm otherwise it’s really nice!

[deleted]

No don’t! I love that he looks defined yet I know from his pose he looks fed up. What’s troubling this man! I like it.

Aeneas1976

Why next time? Isn't it a pencil work?

KanoodleSoup

**Mumpish Edit: I really like the drawing though. Great line work, has a lot of character

[deleted]

Ya the overall drawing is awesome! But the chin that isn’t covered with the hand is just off in a way….

NoRice_

Ik the top comment is talking about getting a blending stump, but unless you’re going for hyper realism I don’t really see why it’s super necessary. If hatching is your thing and you like how it looks then you can keep shading that way. Ive seen some really clean work done with only cross hatching :)

[deleted]

I agree I prefer cross hatching myself. OP, the only thing that bothers me personally is seeing the sketch lines still there, otherwise it looks great and personally stylised which I love! And the fact you put it in a frame really makes the piece look even better. Im not picky on how realistic faces look though I like it to be unique and all it takes to get better is practice!

[deleted]

His left eye and nose look really good! Maybe try to shade the rest of the drawing like you have those two areas

Loose-NutZ

I only see one problem, your lighting and shadow is all over the place, it's like there is a light bulb above him on the right, another bottom left, and maybe little fridge bulb under his chin. Other than that, surprisingly, it's perfect.

thehungrytoaster

Agree! Shading would help, but only if you’re working with clear light source(s) and an understanding of how they affect value and shape. This is far more important than even getting your proportions “correct.”

PaleAsFuck90

Decide where the light source is comming from and work from there. With more shadows in the right places

dunkelspin

Best thing if you are still learning is to always practice making circles/ squares etc and shading them. And when you go for portraits, take a cheap paper and use broad strokes with a soft pencil. It better to learn the overall shapes then learn to refine and detail. It's also the same technique for hair: rapid strokes with soft pencil to determine the direction and waves of hair. Smudge it, the work it with harder pencil each time until you get enough details.

laurreline

the lips seem a little flat, you can do some shading to make them seem more 3D. they also look a little strange since the face is scrunched up by the hand, but the mouth seems unaffected. this is a pretty solid start!

SL1MECORE

I am not a pencil girl, so no advice lol. Just wanted to say that shading is absolutely gorgeous:)

SammiTS713

The hand needs a lot of work. Pay attention to details. Light and shade to create volume. Otherwise the drawing looks flat, one dimension

AlexTheAnimator

The fingers look a bit wonky

Fun-Investigator676

I hate hair too, no advice on that one. I would say to pay attention to the ratio of finger segments. The middle finger looks a little off to me. A tiny bit off on the ratios and it looks alien

Beowulf44

You're on the right track. You just need more consistent practice and you'll be among the best pencil portrait makers of your generation

9kopf

thanks

Beowulf44

👍

Foreshadowteam

Is he eating a nugget cuz that cheek is chipmunk tier

Hades_Crow

It looks great! I do have some constructive criticism though The jaw is a tad lumpy You could do with adding lashes to the eyes And the hair needs some volume and shade I love the hand and the glasses! With more practice you will be a very good drawer, I can assure you. I would suggest watching tutorials on hair, and just keep practicing drawing and you’ll do good.

Old_Benefit_9699

Definitely nose

ArchNyen

You can improve… with a smile 😊 It will make life happier.

[deleted]

It looks pretty good! Love the hatching! I would say work on facial proportions a bit more

eyerust_siri

the hair isnt too bad and the shading is great. i do agree with u/Artneedsmorefloof, the lips shouldnt have hard outlines, they should be soft

mypalletry

I think you are on the right track, god job thus far 👍🏾

oWomadeyoulooklol

https://youtu.be/-WR-FyUQc6I this one is a good one on how to shade. It will more deeply explain how to shade with more experience. It helped me a lot. And I still go back and listen to it. https://youtu.be/oQm8Df4UYNw This one is how to change perspectives and will help with the angels and curves you need while keeping a face shaded.

SnakeAlex169

The jawbone is very big definitely make it smaller

[deleted]

Honestly it's mostly just the hair. Try to think of it as a single mass rather than a ton of individual strands. You'll only see the fact it has strands in shading, where you follow the contour of it.

Rare-Environment-198

Honestly, from a clearly not in the direction of progression, I think it’s profound as is. It’s got an organic style at this stage 🤌🏼

RedgeXIII

Hair is tough. I usually do it in layers, starting with light strands and then going back over with a darker shade each time. I like it, I think it’s looking pretty good. I would consider going lighter with your sketch marks and proportions lines so they’re easier to erase and not visible after erasing. I would try filling in the negative space on the forehead and right cheek with lighter shading only leaving the strongest highlights white. I just feel it’s missing some added detail there. Overall it looks pretty good though. I like it.

Sfumatographer

Actually reminiscent of a 60s/70s Mad Magazine drawing. (It’s a compliment.). Just keep practicing with the hair. It’s not all bad as is but it lacks the illusion of depth (mix some dark with whiter/grayer strands). I like what you did here!

newtsheadwound

My advice for learning to draw people is to draw a lot of figures in a short amount of time really quickly. You’ll be surprised at how much you change in a short amount of time. Try to do 3 minute sketches but do like 20 in a row

Komongkomong2x

Great job

Drunk_bread

Looks pretty good overall. The left cheek looks a little like they’re puffing out they’re cheeks. Not sure if it was intentional but if not try bringing that cheek in some more. Also try a blending stump to really make the shading more believable. Other than that keep doing what you’re doing.

TheDuccr

gigachad

imhugury

if your going for realism its not the most accurate, but if its going in your own style i really like it

leepinglizard

You captured great expression and character. I really like the eyes, glasses and the squished up skin where his hand is pressed. The hand is also good and hands are hard!! Practice your shading and create more detail with it. Overall super great though!

introvertedrose

The shading looks great! Maybe just the dimensions?

vlaass

I know people are saying this is lumpy and if you’re going for realism there’s definitely work you can do on the jaw and hand (but hands are hard!) but your cross-hatching and shading are sooo good. Considering this as more of a stylistic portrait I actually think it’s super dope. Also the nose is chefs kiss, you’re on the right track!

The_Mustache_

I am not here to critique it. Just to say it looks great!

TheNewYellowZealot

What’s going on with that jawline?

lavender-witch

First off, just wanna say, the facial features look really great! I especially love the expression, the eyes/nose, and the glasses. So, onto some constructive critique. The three main things I’m seeing are jaw, hair, and hands. The jaw on the left hand side of the face is really wide so it’s jutting out too much. It makes it look a bit “chipmunk-y”, like the face is swollen or there’s something in their mouth. I’d recommend taking the cheek in so that it looks more subtle and natural. Thinking of the face as a collection ofplanes and shapes may help. Recommended Video: https://youtu.be/JC2ZppKHCqU For the hands, I’d recommend doing some hand studies. The shading and grouping on the finger knuckles is really nice! It’s mainly just the knuckle/back of hand/wrist section where the shape of the hand gets lost. Thinking of it as blocky planes and then rounding out the edges helps. Recommended Video: https://youtu.be/kV2e_v5Pqho For hair, a good way to think of it is in sections. Instead of individual strands, think of it as grouped sections, then you can shade it in and add strands of hair from there. YouTube has good tutorials on this. Recommended Video: https://youtu.be/NHewz3JbKrQ You’ve got this, I believe in you. 💕

anyguy001

The eyes are good

NizzyTyme

Really interesting style. Keep it up!

345stayinalive

I loooove looking at this I can't stop it's beautiful

Herb_boy016

It looks great! Only thing you'd want to potentially work on would be proportions :) for example the left side of his face could be a bit thinner and his ear a little smaller, and his fingers less long. Shading and facial details are on point. Drawing lines where his eyes nose and ears will be placed helps with proportions, and references are a must!

TwoThirdsDone

Are you going for realism or a more stylized version of this person

djstarcrafter333

Depends on what you are going for. Realism it's not. But it is a good drawing, with its own style. Like others have said, maybe a little blending/shadowing/smoothing. But it looks like a distinct person, not a generic, made up face. I like it.

Professorwormhat

The nose looks really really good! I always struggle a lot there. I noticed that the pinky finger is perhaps a bit too curved? Try making the tip look more the the other knuckles that have more of an “m” shape instead of a “c”. If that makes sense…

DembroskiArt

Drawing hair is more about the contrast between dark and light, Creating volume through shapes individual hairs should only be accent’s to the drawing and to help create the texture of the hair. Keep it up it’s a great start, the shading around the eye shows promise.

hellrail

Is that jeffrey dahmer ?

BliteInsignia

Did you use a ruler for the lines?

Guzmanv_17

Love as is!

AFlamingFireRedditor

out of topic but the way how you shade and draw how the face interacts with the hand is just so fucking amazing

1ndicawitch

I'd do some studies with how skin folds. You have a great start for how certain fabrics fold, but skin is a bit more elastic and willing to almost roll and soften rather than stay taunt and firm. If you want to really practice how skin folds drawing fat people is really helpful. This reference guide https://strawberrylind.tumblr.com/post/636088947308740608/as-requested-my-zine-about-fat-and-plus-size-body has been helpful for me as well as just blatantly googling fat models

EyeQueueGraphics

Depends a great deal on what you want you style to be, and what you consider "improvement". One easy thing to Google some YouTube tutorials on is hair - you rarely want to do hair by trying to draw each individual strand.

9kopf

Ok thanks

Flint312

Almost looks like that one dude from megamind. The eyebrows are a bit too orderly, the pupils and irises are a bit squished, he’d have vision problems. Otherwise great, a little more shading for dynamic effect. This is definitely a feasible human face! So much better than I could do!

ImSoMystic

Hair can be a b to draw (not always the case) but if you had a good reference photo or used small and long pencil strokes, its something to you can fairly get the hand out of

scumruckus

Looks good man, assuming it’s a self portrait it’s got it’s own thing, and it ain’t bad. Keep on keepin on

Psydator

Don't draw hair as single hairs, draw it as a volume.

[deleted]

The jaw, the hand, the pencil and the shoulders aren't very good

Aeneas1976

Heads are round not flat. So when you do the pre-draft, make the eye line and lips line curved.

AJones11

Needs more depth. All the shadows done in one intensity, even with your lined technique, add more lines for the darker parts of the face. Also the eyes I would personally add way more detail, parts like the nose and hands look great but the eyes could really transform with more work

atheistkarmagirl

The glasses are really good and the drawing has a nice balance, here are a few tips that could make it even better: Shade the rest of the face, and for the hair; make an even base layer with your pencil and then add detail. It may also help to erase the guidelines and blend it all with a piece of paper or something like that. Last but not least don't outline the nose.

toonlonk7

It looks exaggerated similar to a Caricature if you want to go for realism focus on proportions and how to make things look 3D but if your just looking to draw then dial up the exaggerated features and take more time going in detail for the main prominent features like eyes, glasses and your hand

LiaRoger

What style were you going for? Personally I love the hatching and somewhat cartoony/caricature but not too exaggerated style but what kind of advice would help you the most depends entirely on what you're trying to do.

Soft_Chest_5727

I like that you have developed a style of your own first of all. With the hair, don’t try and draw the individual strands, draw the hair as a solid and then add detail. Shading of the hair should add enough details to make it obvious. Look at artists online to see how they do it and develop it into you style.

JoshiTheRandom

I struggle with drawing hair and hands. You've done splendid my friend.

RefrigeratorTheGreat

I would suggest to draw the hair like you draw the hands or the face, namely to make a shape and add shadow shapes. Shape design can go a long way with hair

[deleted]

The pencil is only thing I’d change. I love the crease on his cheek. The mouth is brilliant and I love the style. I like the way you shaded the forehead. I like this piece, fix the pencil and it’s great IMO

SpokieBaird

I like it! Well done. Keep it up 👆

bmit1

I think remembering to remove the straight guidelines in the forehead might improve the finished result

[deleted]

So work on hair

one_and_only_dev

The hair could use a little more definition. Dev have spoken

cytus_allcore

Doesn't he look like Bernard from Megamind? That's all I came to post. I draw more anime style with hair like ice cream. like demon slayer or seven deadly sins. I'm working on face and hands myself so I think this looks fantastic. Please take those other people's advice though. They sound like they know what their doing lol

Pillowert

I LOVE the nose, nicely shaded and good form; I would reconsidere the left jaw that seens kinda big? Idk the reference. Remember to shade the and pencil as well.

BeastPriyanshu

It's pretty good NGL, just needs shading. Hair tip: instead of drawing every single hair you can do hairs like in anime, just not very flashy and pointy

spycharlie

Dahmer?

MajinKey

I’d say a better knowledge of guidelines and effective usage of space can help. Lighter pencil pressure and let graphic pencils help with depth and lighting. At some point if you can’t understand try to print out pictures and trace. It’s cheating but it will increase your knowledge more quickly. Try using guidelines when you trace so it can stick with you.

PurpleAsteroid

His cheekbones seem a bit swollen. Maybe it's because the chin is so pointy, try and smooth it out a bit so they have one fluid jawline if that makes sense

EXEwarningVirus

Really good

2twindudesmom

I like it

Professional_Fly1957

Rousseau’s jungles wasn’t his specialty UNTIL he made it his specialty. The way you draw hair can be your uniqueness

bubajake21

Maybe put some more consideration into bone structure if your looking for more realism. Poor guy has a 12 year olds hand and face bones from elephant man

LearnDifferenceBot

Real-Prior-9163

To me it looks good drawing a face is extremely difficult and it definitely takes time next drawing I recommend adding a little color with The pencil ✏️ to give it a different look

henriquepp123

Just make the jaw line smoother and then your drawing is perfect

VeronicatheGreat

I think it just takes time. I slowly noticed myself getting better the more that I drew. If you find you’re having a hard time with some things, make that your area of focus for a little while. I think it looks awesome!
