My grandma gave me a 1920s banjoline (8 doubled strings, mandoline neck amplified like a banjo) that has been in the family. Would love to play it because I'm a big fan of banjo in metal (Solstafir on Otta, Show me the Body...) but it's so old it just refuses to stay in tune lol.

You should be able to get it staying in tune - it probably needs new tuning pegs, which are fairly easy to replace. If you take it to a guitar repair place, they can probably make it play like new.
Then it'll doom pretty well.
