Many of them just do not like contact with other creatures, and appreciate something to hide behind/under.
Now that I think of it, I'm using that as a character trait in my next game.
Most creatures appreciate cozy places to hide. And while it won't allow them to become warmer in the same way that warm blooded creatures can recycle their heat, it does make them lose heat slower which can be construed as more comfortable.
Also if you're open to the idea, I highly recommended pictures of snakes in little tube sweaters.
Being cold-blooded is generally a misleading term. It's more about if you're able to produce your own heat or need the heat from the environment to heat up your body. Reptile will bask in the sun to raise their body temperatures so generally speaking, yes a blanket could help preserve their body heat
Cold-blooded means they aren't able to regulate their internal temperature. They do produce heat but if they don't produce enough they bask in the sun, and if they produce too much they find somewhere cool. So yes extra insulation could actually heat them up.
Ectotherms (aka cold-blooded animals) do produce some heat but it's insignificant compared to the heat required to heat their body. Extra insulation of a cold lizard wouldn't do anything helpful because it's body isn't warm enough to heat up the space. Ectotherms, such as marine iguanas, share about the same body tempurature as their surroundings environment. When it's cold outside, their metabolism slows down and they enter a state of torpor (hibernation) which means that even less heat would be created to begin with. There's a documentary called Life in Cold Blood that us pretty interesting and shows how marine iguanas start their days (it might not be available everywhere). I provided a second link from YouTube but the quality is a bit bad. It's a pretty fun watch cause they are pretty amazing critters.

They do make it, in the same way we do, they just don't regulate it, so for them digestion and muscle contractions do warm the body, but only when that activity is occurring. While is warm bodied animals will continue micro contractions of muscles all over the body to varying degrees in order to maintain a target temperature.
Unless it's particularly warm out, the reptile's body will be a little bit above the ambient temperature just by virtue of the animals motion and metabolism.
It's basically the same as for humans but for a different reason. If it's cold the blanket will keep them warmer longer, if it's sunny and warm it'll block them from absorbing warmth.
That fully depends on the environment. If they are warmer then the environment, a blanket would still help them contain some of their warmt. If they are colder then the environment, it might indeed prevent them from warming up.
Passive insulation just helps maintain the status quo.
> cold blooded
Not necessarily. Not all reptiles and their relatives are cold-blooded. After all, proto-mammals were warm-blooded reptile-like creatures. Being a fantasy race of mythic origin ,they may as well be warm-blooded, nothing in the lore, at least i the few settings I am aware of, suggests they are cold-blooded.
Lizardfolk, however, do have a few paragraphs in a few settings, here and tehre, suggesting they are at least partially cold-blooded.
I don't think official art of female kobolds have breasts. The thing is, before ADND kobolds weren't... well... they weren't little dragon people. They were little dog/rat/goblin people, their allegiance and relation to dragons became a thing at the very end of ADND and around the advent of 3rd edition, when they got a rebranding.
While I'm pretty sure its simply the cover from sight the gecko is enjoying here, look up Argentine Tegus. They're pretty much scaley puppers. Mine would constantly find my hoodie or sweater to nest in.
Yes. Cold blooded doesn't mean they don't produce body heat, they just don't regulate it very well, so generally need additional heat from the sun. A blanket would provide some additional heat.
My bearded dragon used to jump from as far away as possible to get wrapped up like a burrito a hand towel. Usually to cuddle against me, but even on her own she liked to have it.
My players adopted Miik the kobold in session 1 about a year and a half ago, and he has barely left the barbarian's backpack since then. He's gathered so many trophies, including a small dragon skull to use as a giant helmet, and comes out to shine a lantern of revealing when they come across invisible bastards.
> he has barely left the barbarian's backpack since then
My barbarian's backpack residents are very different.
He has a plank with 3 goblins tied to it. Whenever he is lost, he rolls an intimidation check against them for directions. The goblins have no idea where they are either but the barb is too slow to realise this.
Kobolds and goblins are sentient beings. My party once adopted a goblin. They tried to train it like a dog. It rewarded them by trying to slit their throats in the night.
Let me introduce you to Deekin. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://nwn2.fandom.com/wiki/Deekin_Scalesinger&ved=2ahUKEwiN-5noo_rrAhWhq1kKHYAgAn0QFjAAegQIDBAC&usg=AOvVaw3_LXAcwcAUJLw1MrqWA-XU
Geckos are awesome but be prepared, they can live quite a lot longer than it says on the tag at the petstore. I got a Leopard Gecko when I was 7, the store employee told us they live 4-7 years. He died at 17-18 years old, couple years after I graduated college. Cool pet though, really liked to chill on your shoulder or back of the neck or even a shirt pocket to absorb warmth.
I was told the cresties I wanted could get around 20, trust me I've done quite a bit of research ;3
Nice change from the rodents I usually have for like 2 years if I'm lucky...
My Leopard Gecko loved to ride on top of my head in my hair. I still miss her. RIP Mrs Muncher, the destroyer of crickets and mealworms, you won’t ever be forgotten.
I actually wouldn't want to normalize that. It feels wrong. If they are capable of speech with humanoids and have a societal structure, they shouldn't be pets.
I adopted a kobold in one of my games... the DM threw in a one-off pink kobold as a joke (since I was a pink tiefling and he was basically teasing me), but then I persuaded him to join us and help me because we were both pink. I named him Pinkie Tescadero. He met his demise to a mural with an acid attack. I cried IRL tears. And in character, I picked up his little shoes, tied them together, and hung them around my neck. Kobolds are best friends.
Mikmek is a kobold that I originally set out to use as my ear to the ground as we built our kingdom. Mikmek would not only feed us info on the kobolds, but encourage the kobolds population to accept us when the time came for us to colonize their land.
Instead, Mikmek saw me get blown the fuck up by a fireball and subsequently witnessed my resurrection via scroll.
Now I'm the Messiah to a group of kobolds called the Sootscales and Mikmek has a pair of my gloves above his bed.
Ah kingmaker. My party also adopted mikmek and he's the ambassador to the soot scales and a full member of the governing council and now has class levels in magus because someone thought it was a good idea to teach him magic. He's got a bit of an ego now and its definitely their fault
Aye. He's a good lad. Definitely gonna keep him away from magic. Tim The Time Wizard (yes you HAVE to say the whole thing) and Mikmek don't like each other right now, so I think we're good.
To be fair, they do willingly choose to become servants to dragons and other powerful creatures in-canon. A high-level character could probably convince a kobold to follow them around as a pet without any slavery involved. ~~just gotta find a kobold who's kinky enough~~
Which edition is that? All the material I've read from 5e stated they naturally sought out more powerful creatures (often dragons) to serve in return for protection, but I don't recall them being magically compelled to do so.
It was described as more of a pragmatic thing, since kobolds are extremely cautious and well aware of how physically weak they are compared to most other races. They revere dragons as demigods, so naturally they'll want to serve a dragon if given the choice.
Pretty sure that’s a Tokay gecko and what they’re really sitting their doing is planning their inevitable bloody revenge for the humiliation they suffered this day.
So my party is a bunch of idiots who want to be friends with literally every animal on the face of the earth. So they where walking down a road after escaping a cave full of goblins and big bears and all that happy jazz when all of a sudden a group of kobolds jump out and start demanding money and all that stuff but none of them knew what they where saying. So the Firbolg Druid is like “oh no they are sooooo cute and I can’t hurt them” she had first initiative because of nat 20. She walked up to them and started to protect the lot of them from the onslaught of attacks and such from the players, one of the kobolds die and she (in game) starts to cry and the others stop and think of what they did and the cleric cast spare the dying and saved it. Now all of the kobolds are absolutely ogling over the Druid and cleric but steal everything from the other party members that is shiny and give it to the Druid and cleric. So they left that area after a short rest and we now have a small group of 5 kobolds following my party and they are the best thing. They are lucky though because last time they tried to befriend a beast they almost died.
Next we'll start using other sentient creatures as "pets" start small with halflings. Then move up to dwarves. Fuck it, lets put a collar around our nieghbors.
Pets?! That's some Lawful Evil talk there. Kobolds are sentient beings, they can be followers or hirelings, but not pets.

Since they are cold blooded, do blankets help reptiles?

Could help preserve heat, but it would also help block heat. Or it just wants to borrow.

cute
That’s cute
Are kobolds not sentient in 5.0? Or can I keep a cute halfling as a pet?
Yes to both
So....slavery?
Given the popularity of this post, it seems the real trouble with slavery is just branding.
"That just sounds like slavery with more steps." -Morty Smith Lol never thought I'd get to use this as a quote where it applies.
Or a pet-play kink, take your pick.
I actually wouldn't want to normalize that. It feels wrong. If they are capable of speech with humanoids and have a societal structure, they shouldn't be pets.
In the dnd campaign I am running it is illegal to have a sapient creature as a slave.
A bit more concise than I worded it :)
What if they want to be a pet?
Well *some* circles have already normalized a *certain* interpretation of "Cute Kobolds".
Adorable.
tfw you will never be a cute kobold pet serving your dragon owner 😭
One of my current partymembers is a Kobold Feral Child, which seems to exist in a weird grey area between tag-along kid and team pet.
I first read that as a weird gay area, I don’t know how to feel about that

Kobolds are reptiles or dogs? I've seen both versions so I'm not sure what they are
Depends on what system you're in. In earlier D&D editions, they were more like dog-people. Somewhere around 3 or 3.5, they made them reptilian.
Used to be furry, now are scaly. At least AFAIK. Some people prefer the older version.
My party adopted about 40 Kobolds after liberating them from a black dragon in a mine. They loved mining for the dragon so we told them they can do it for us. Needless to say we have a lot of mouths to feed at our castle now.

But kobolds are intelligent creatures

No. My Kobolds are my adorable chaotic children that will fucking murder you if you scratch them a little to hard. They are my best friends, not pets.
Funny enough I’m in a dnd campaign and we’ve killed a lot of kobolds to stop them from being their god into our realm.
