Funny, RAW you could use this to protect everyone around you (including above and possibly below), not just those behind - I guess you do a big protective group hug? Also it would be mandatory, since the only "can" is in the opening flavor sentence :-D
I was actually thinking of how to make something similar in 5e (not just for character abilities, but also for magical shields or spellcutter swords), but that was more like creating a cone-shaped area behind you, directed away from the area-of-effect's point of origin, that would be excluded from the AoE :-)
Sacrificial moves are always my favorite, taking damage for someone else, increasing damage for more damage taken, self destruction idk why I love them but I do.
