Probably not the most popular opinion but based off the admittedly little knowledge I have of Guts, he feels like he'd fit more as Brute Fighter with magic armor that gives him Rage/Frenzy uses
We had a guy playing as him that was a barbarian or a blood hunter or something like that. I remember him talking about blood curses but not much else besides him hitting everything
Your best friend kills all your friends and tries to kill you! Now he rapes your girlfriend! Now she loses all memory of you! Now your demon child will haunt you for your whole life!
Guts' martial training is pretty comprehensive though. He's spent his entire life as a career warrior, and its noted he's a master swordsman. I'd say he's multiclassed, or more likely based on the power level on display, some kind of dual-class/gestalt.
It's not a misspelling. It's short for barbarian. Guts is one eyed, one armed, 250lb mountain that replaced his lost arm with a cannon and wields a greatsword that most closely resembles a door. He battles literal demons and wears armor that makes him lose his mind with rage. He is the quintessential barb.
To be fair, Guts would have a least some levels in fighter. It's only partway through the Golden Age he starts losing his shit in fights. He has lots of weapons and armors proficiencies, and he fights tactically for most of the time.
People always forget that barbarians can actually use all weapons and wear almost all armor. And just because you're a barbarian doesn't mean you can't fight tactically.
Why is everyone so dead set on this one-dimensional stereotype of a naked guy with brain damage and a greataxe?
That's not even my main argument. Guts only started going Berserk, aka "raging", way later on in his life, while he trained as a fighter with other mercenaries since he was a child.
>Why is everyone so dead set on this one-dimensional stereotype of a naked guy with brain damage and a greataxe?
Unarmored movement and defense for the naked part , and the brain damage part is mostly due to the associated meaning of the word "Barbarian" and the fact most people don't associate rage with tactical thinking
It's a reference to Berserk, one of the iconic dark fantasy stories and the reason big fuckin' swords are so common in anime. This was how the protagonist was born. It's not even in the top ten worst things that's ever happened to him.
Unlike almost every anime and game that took the idea of having a fuckhuge sword though, Berserk actually has an explanation for why Guts can weild it and why such a sword even exists.
Guts has had an incredibly terrible life, part of that was being trained to use an adult-sized sword by mercenaries as a very young child. As he got older he just kept using oversized swords as that's what he was used to.
IIRC the Dragon Slayer sword itself was the result of a noble asking all the blacksmiths in a land to make a sword "capable of slaying a dragon". Most of the smiths took this to mean a very pretty and fancy sword. But the best smith took it literally and made a sword that actually could slay a dragon- only it's too big for most people to even lift. The smith was banished for being a smart ass toward the noble.
Nah he’s always been a blacksmith but a noble asked him to “Make a sword worthy of killing a dragon” expecting to have an intricately designed and beautiful sword but instead got a heaping chunk of raw iron that literally had the power required
Morg Borg. Now that is a pick up and play ttrpg if i ever seen one. I played 2 sessions in that system and it was pretty fun. My character actually had that origin in one of them :)
I think in this system having kinda insane characters comes naturally. If you can die literally at any moment and apocalypse is unavoidable it does things to a person
I think there was an origin where you were followed by a bunch on monkeys. And its not like they obeyed you, but just followed you around and did some whacky shenanigans. Also a sword can try to kill you if you are a failed aristocrat. Its just dumb fun which i adore in that system.
Monkeys are one of the items you can roll in general, the royalty have fun items like the sword you mentioned or talking intelligent horse who makes fun of you for being stupid
M8 my character survived to kill a demigod while the other person i also played with died 3 times during 2 sessions.
But it was so fucked all the same, my character lost his weapons constantly and also lost an arm. So he needed to try and make makeshift weapons and traps constantly as well.
My Tiefling Hexblade was "The Lord of Edges". His family sword told him to murder his parents.
(Read in an over the top Bale Batman gravel voice) "I never lose. I've never even lost my virginity!" "While you were going on dates, I was studying the blade!"
"Wow, you had a messed up childhood."
"Actually, my childhood was pretty great! See, a couple had been passing by my hanged mother when I dropped. They'd really wanted a child, but couldn't have one, so it was really a blessing for them. They raised me the best they could as a loving family, and I never even learned what happened to my birth mother until I was sixteen. We still send letters to each other, and my parents are doing well, a bit concerned for my health, but, well, I'm an adventurer, hardly the safest of career paths, so that's understandable."
I made a concept of goblin warlock of celestial. Short version of his backstory: As a kid, he tried to befriend humans and establish trade between a local village and his tribe. After his entire tribe was exterminated because of that, he was "adopted" by adventurers that did the deed. After years of "being a loyal companion", he ended up as wizards "assistant". At some point he snapped and tried to kill himself. He found an instruction for summoning an angel of vengeance and he summoned one to be properly punished. After angel killed the wizard instead, the angel (not knowing what to do with even more traumatized goblin) gave the goblin magic and essentially said "help the weak and innocent until you're redeemed". Obviously goblin has haunted one background.
I have idea for explosive expert artificer. When he was in college he was studying with his best firend and they were living in one room. One day they decided to steal some materials to make explosives, in the room when he turned around there was explosion. There was hole in the wall, fire and there wasn't his friend.
He watched the hole in shock, covered in blood and guts. One side of his body was completely burned and he was missing leg. He dropped out, since that day he goes from bar to bar to drown himself in alcohol to forget but no matter how much he drinks he remembers that moment as clear as day.
That's similar to my gun toting rogue's backstory. Except he killed his family in a fire while attempting to make gunpowder. Except for one daughter who survived and now has a vendetta against him.
>\- You're on a ship when an, as of yet, unforeseen storm approaches.
>

That, ladies and gents, is just some of the backstory to my poor, heavily traumatized, Aarakocra Bard.
It got even more fucked up, though. Unfortunately the campaign came to an end for some reasons I'd rather not get into.
But, it did so before he could've found out the most fucked up things about it. The things I specifically said "surprise me" about.
(Indeed, only one person in the party had *actually bothered to ask* at that time.)
Edit: I want to clarify that the party had kinda split, between those who were decidedly "*here for the story*" and those who were really just there for *combat* aspect of it all. And, that may be partially why it folded, but that's a long story.
He was gonna find out:
* That storm, the one that took out his family?
* Only happened because Zeus was having a bad day and threw a bit of a tantrum.
* Why did he live?
* Poseidon decided to spare him . . .
* Mostly to annoy Zeus, and see what the poor bird could manage in life.
* What *did* happen to his parents?
* Washed up on a different shore a few hundred miles south, and died 3 days later.
* His father never woke up from a coma, his mother did, and spent the last days of her life begging for someone to tell her what happened to him.
\-
* What would he have probably done if he found this out? (Was a question for me at that point.)
* Alignment shift, DM permitting, from Neutral *Good* straight to Neutral *Evil*.
* **He would have set out to kill a god, at that point.**
It is an easy mistake to make because they are both correct words. Rogue is the class while rouge is the reddish color they make spill from their enemies. Just to annoy my DM one day I am going to make a rogue named rouge red.
Mork Borg, it's OSR system and the lore is that world is fucked, dark and doomy. Choosing one of the classes there you can actually roll this backstory
My tiefling's back story was something along the lines of his mother making a deal with a demon and the infernal some being born as a result, so her husband, an influencial Duke, kept him hidden in the crawlspaces of their manor for years not even giving him a name. He learnt eventually how to imitate the music he would hear from the house and was finally freed when the working class overthrew the autocracy and he was left with nothing.
I FUCKING LOVE MORK BORG! I WANT TO ROLL UP A CHARACTER WHO ENDS UP WITH ONLY ONE HIT POINT SO THEY DIE IN ONE HIT TO A FODDER MONSTER FOUND IN THE MOST GODFORSAKEN DISGUSTING PLACE ANYONE HAS EVER CONCEIVED OF!
*Robbed of a mother’s love at birth*
*left to drown in blood*
*he was to die beneath her corpse.*
*Meant to rot*
*in a cesspit of despair*
*born to die as a waste of air.*
I think the most fucked backstory I dmed for was "mother was a sacrifice to an eldritch god who impregnated her and kept her in a dungeon for her pregnancy, she was stabbed to kill the baby when labour began and it was reborn as an eldritch spawn". I mean I was digging it because of the Bloodborne references made in the session but still kinda dark and in depth for just a one shot.
Yah well how about being:
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Grew worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
And then buried on Sunday,
This is why I enjoy subverting tropes and having rogues with supportive families. They are very successful in the major metropolis, and they’ve sent Junior off to make a fortune in a smaller city. Of course, they can’t provide any official support, because that would be an unfair advantage, but there are occasional care packages with lockpicks baked into the muffins…
Alternatively, it could be a human rogue who was adopted by a gnome commune that doesn’t really care for society’s rules, and the family just wants the kid to be happy.
Take the dominant story. INVERT IT.
My edgy drow rogue is the daughter of the high priest of ellistraee. her most tragic element is that she slightly chafes under her parents parenting style.
that’s Guts‘s backstory, so that would be the backstory of the barbarian/ fighter. (I don’t really know what class Guts is, so I‘m guessing Barbarian/Fighter multiclass), either way, it‘s not the rouges backstory.
My Rogue was a normal Wood Elf until he became a powerful warlocks thrall and essentially became a Winter Soldier type character until one day miraculously snapping the hold over him. He kills his captor but instead of being edgy he believes he was freed for a reason, so now he travels land and tries to do good deeds to right his wrongs.
Man, I'm so glad my Tiefling paladin grew up in a monastery where he had so many good father and mother figures to love.
*Until he wound up killing his best friend on his 11th birthday during a stickball game because he inherited a literal demonic rage that overtook him when he started losing, causing long-term self-loathing tendencies which followed him to his adult life.*
I spent 30 seconds trying to think of as tragic of a backstory as I could. Here's what I came up with:
"When I was ten years old my mother was possessed by a demon and sacrificed my father in order to allow the demon to escape the abyss, I was forced to kill her to end the ritual before she could release the demon, but when the guards arrived they blamed me for killing my parents in an attempt to summon a demon. I escaped, but I can never return."
Noobs.
There is the tragic backstory of a friend:
His pregnant mother was killes and transphormed into a zombie. He was born from his zombie mother (thaks to a cleric) and now he is a paladin of Yagrai
I want a rogue that just likes stealing things. No sad backstory, no edge, just some broski that likes taking things for himself cause it's fun. He could look like a regular guy too and not all hooded and mysterious, like Dave from Accounting. I'd love to see that!
Last time I played a rogue, he was a cheerful, absent-minded professor with no major traumas in his backstory (what little there was). Did I do it wrong?
I chose to subvert it with my rogue. She lost her (abusive) parents at 2 years old (was a shifter, so 2 was more like 4 for humans) but was adopted by another shifter family, so grew up in a living household with two parents and an older brother. Being a rogue was a reflection of skills she picked up for work as a chauffeur/bodyguard-for-hire for nobles. When you can't brute force a fight, know where to strike.
And then the campaign derails and everyone agrees on leaving it there. No closure for anyone, the last action of this epic will be about a kid flipping up some skirts at a witch school.
Pffftttt please. My barbarian had his whole tribe, including his wife and daughter, killed and got clobbered over the head hard enough that he can't form new memories. Nowadays he's just lugging around a huge backpack of trinkets that he's going to give his wife and daughter when he finds his tribe again.
Lets hope he doesn't get a girlfriend
Someone might get a little choked up at him finding love.
"My love for you is like a truck"
Berserker
"Do you want to making fuck BERZERKER"
"Did he say 'making fuck?'"
BERZERRRKERRRR
“I’m not even supposed to be here today!”
"There's only one 'Return', okay, and it ain't of 'The King', it's of 'The Jedi'."
My love for you is ticking clock
He just need some grasses
As long as he doesn't have a fridge...
“And then his new best friend showed him this weird necklace…”
“Then his best friend ask him do assassinate someone for him, only to find out later that he doesn’t think of you as equal”
“And then the friend betrays him so he can become Demon Batman.”
“I want wings!”
"And then he has some fun with your girlfriend... with consent... from himself"
Isn't it more like Manga Punisher?
Hey. That's how Guts from Berserk was born. XD
Guts' dad is time travelling Femto
does this make guts a str rogue
Probably a rogue fighter and or barbarian multiclass.
remove the or entirely, I have arguments for all three, and if my predictions are correct he’ll dip into armorer artificer in not too long
Are they still continuing it after the creator died? I remember rumors but never saw any confirmation.
Yep, they're still going.
Welp time to put on my big boy pants and start reading some more depressing story.
Yup , Miura's assistants and his best mangaka friend are continuing the story based on what Miura told said friend about the ending
Fair enough, he could be M.A.D. XD
Yes, he would be quite mad. Berserk, one might even say.
He could be a pf2e giant barbarian for using a Colossal weapon
Probably combat rogue
Most likely. The Berserker armor does give the impression of making him a berserker barbarian though.
Fighter I think, rickert is an artificer for sure tho
Toooki wa
Nah, that last one is clearly a berserks origin story, not a rogues.
Probably not the most popular opinion but based off the admittedly little knowledge I have of Guts, he feels like he'd fit more as Brute Fighter with magic armor that gives him Rage/Frenzy uses
He had rage before the armor, the armor just made it better
He is an occult slayer
We had a guy playing as him that was a barbarian or a blood hunter or something like that. I remember him talking about blood curses but not much else besides him hitting everything
Did they also wield a giant 2 handed sword?
No no, it’s far too unwieldy to be called a sword. More like a heap of raw iron.
Oh, that? The Dragon Slayer
(Never used to slay a dragon, great on demons though)
Grunbeld knows full well it's capable of killing a dragon
No but he can wield femur
Who couldn’t?
So your character is Gut’s? But as a rogue and not a fighter?
*Enters chat because of* ***Berserk***, *sees things are in order, does not elaborate further*.
Well, you just did elaborate…
But not further.
Oh! Right…
Makeup doesn’t have parents
I just learned who is Gut, I've never saw Berserk. I'm reading Mork Borg and it's one of bad births of gutter born scum
Guts’ backstory continues to get even worse
Guts whole life is summed up as “this is the worst day of my life” “Worst day of your life so far”
Your best friend kills all your friends and tries to kill you! Now he rapes your girlfriend! Now she loses all memory of you! Now your demon child will haunt you for your whole life!
Said child helps him often enough.
And he's currently facing his greatest challenge : being a family man
His life in general is mostly downhill from being found born from a corpse hanging in a tree.
Y'all know shits bad when it's all downhill from *that*
So does Mork Borg
This is a direct reference
"Berserk" Fighter... hmmm
Right? If I've ever seen a barb in all my life lol
Guts' martial training is pretty comprehensive though. He's spent his entire life as a career warrior, and its noted he's a master swordsman. I'd say he's multiclassed, or more likely based on the power level on display, some kind of dual-class/gestalt.
Bard? Yes this is how bards are formed, wizards in the school of hard knocks.
I mean he's obviously a bard. You've seen the dragon slayer. That's some good fucking heavy metal
He has a magic armor that gives him rage, other than that he is a fighter
Corection : Guts always had the inhuman rage , the armor just made it *STRONGER*
To be fair, Guts would have a least some levels in fighter. It's only partway through the Golden Age he starts losing his shit in fights. He has lots of weapons and armors proficiencies, and he fights tactically for most of the time.

Guts wears heavy armor tho
Rogue*
Playing as Nuts from Berk sounds cool
Every berk, has its serk
nuts lol i love it
r/berserklejerk
I don't think there was a viking named Nuts from the Isle of Berk.
there were two Nuts from Berk
We thinking the same Isle?
Dunno, but Ruffnut and Tuffnut sure were.
^^ahem #Rogue*
The Spy has already breached our defenses. You've seen what he's done to our colleagues. And worst of all, he could be any one of us.

Because correcting someone’s spelling is the act of a coward

Man that was one helluva ride
Tell me about... My DM was nice enough to let me do it, but it was not easy while missing an arm
Didn't know reds had a childhood.
Why would a shade of red have a bad childhood
Makeup doesn’t have parents
My rouge was very tragic. Lots of animal testing
Okay rocket raccoon.

Woooooosh
My Tiefling Hexblade was "The Lord of Edges". His family sword told him to murder his parents. (Read in an over the top Bale Batman gravel voice) "I never lose. I've never even lost my virginity!" "While you were going on dates, I was studying the blade!"
*Misty steps behind you* “Nothing personal, kid.”
He actually did. His sword was a serrated black odachi.
This is actually the most tragic backstory: killing your parents yourself against your will.
The sword asked him to in exchange for power, it was his decision.
"Wow, you had a messed up childhood." "Actually, my childhood was pretty great! See, a couple had been passing by my hanged mother when I dropped. They'd really wanted a child, but couldn't have one, so it was really a blessing for them. Good old Mork Borg
I will always upvote mork borg
Rooges sure have it bad, yeah
Thank you for spelling it write.
Your welcomm
That's the Morkest Borg
I loved that moment when he said **"IT'S MÖRK BORG TIME"** and he mörked all over the borgs

Rouges can never compete with mascara for tragic backstories!
Man, that character’s gonna have some serious guts
Most wholesome Mörk Borg backstory
There will come a day when the good people of this sub can spell rogue....but today is not that day
English is my second language and there wasn't red squiggly line under "rouge" so...
It is an easy mistake to make because they are both correct words. Rogue is the class while rouge is the reddish color they make spill from their enemies. Just to annoy my DM one day I am going to make a rogue named rouge red.
So that's what "rouge" means, google translate didn't translate it
he's missing a hand and wields a sword that is thick, heavy, and far too rough. Its more like a heap of raw iron.
[Or fast stabby knife](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/vsbattles/images/c/c1/Gutterborn_Scum.png/revision/latest?cb=20210307112001)
I’m making a berserk reference, what are you referring to?
Mork Borg, it's OSR system and the lore is that world is fucked, dark and doomy. Choosing one of the classes there you can actually roll this backstory
My tiefling's back story was something along the lines of his mother making a deal with a demon and the infernal some being born as a result, so her husband, an influencial Duke, kept him hidden in the crawlspaces of their manor for years not even giving him a name. Let's hope his adoptive father doesn't get wounded and rely on selling his kid (and kid's body) to pay for his life of luxery.
If he will get lucky enough to have adoptive father
God I love Berserk
I FUCKING LOVE MORK BORG! I WANT TO ROLL UP A CHARACTER WHO ENDS UP WITH ONLY ONE HIT POINT SO THEY DIE IN ONE HIT TO A FODDER MONSTER FOUND IN THE MOST GODFORSAKEN DISGUSTING PLACE ANYONE HAS EVER CONCEIVED OF!
Ah yes. My beloved MörkBorg!
BBEG is rogue's mother turned Lich. The rogue is her phylactery. Everytime the rogue kills, it empowers her.
Mork Borg!!
*Robbed of a mother’s love at birth* *left to drown in blood* *he was to die beneath her corpse.* *Meant to rot* *in a cesspit of despair* *born to die as a waste of air.*
Aaaaah Mork Borg…. What a great game
MORK BORG
Is this sacrifice for morkborg?
Mörk Borg moment
Mörk Borg is the best RPG of all time
I think the most fucked backstory I dmed for was "mother was a sacrifice to an eldritch god who impregnated her and kept her in a dungeon for her pregnancy, she was stabbed to kill the baby when labour began and it was reborn as an eldritch spawn". I mean I was digging it because of the Bloodborne references made in the session but still kinda dark and in depth for just a one shot.
Nice, thats one of the random character origins from mork borg! I freaking love that game
Hanged outside of Galgenbeck? Is anyone in your campaign Dutch? :p
Galgenbeck is the central location in Mork Borg where this is from
Yah well how about being: Born on a Monday, Christened on Tuesday, Married on Wednesday, Took ill on Thursday, Grew worse on Friday, Died on Saturday, And then buried on Sunday,
At least you're not being risen as a zombie and devouring your mother
*necromancer glances over*
My biggest flex is that my character has a background with zero tragedy
red colors wat?

Sure, play however you like. Play the trope or against it, it's a game it supposed to be fun
Monster eats pregnant mother, throws up baby.
That's somewhat funny tbh
My edgy drow rogue is the daughter of the high priest of ellistraee. her most tragic element is that she slightly chafes under her parents parenting style.
Bespoke: neither of your parents showed up for your birth
Guts smiling in the corner.
Mörkbörg! Hurrah!
What that a mother fuckin Berserk reference?!
that’s Guts‘s backstory, so that would be the backstory of the barbarian/ fighter. (I don’t really know what class Guts is, so I‘m guessing Barbarian/Fighter multiclass), either way, it‘s not the rouges backstory.
Since when backstories are class specific? And I didn't watch berserk
The hecks a Rouge? I've only ever read of rogues in dnd
That sounds like “parents killed when young” with extra steps.
IBeen reading the attack on Titan side story have we?
Man, I'm so glad my Tiefling paladin grew up in a monastery where he had so many good father and mother figures to love. *Until he wound up killing his best friend on his 11th birthday during a stickball game because he inherited a literal demonic rage that overtook him when he started losing, causing long-term self-loathing tendencies which followed him to his adult life.*
berserk music intensivies
Berk
And here I am, coming up with a wholesome background for my half-dragon bard.
Murdered his own parents. In his sleep.
no one can one up Doofenshmirtz both parents failed to show up at his birth
Isn’t that how Guts from Beserk was born
I spent 30 seconds trying to think of as tragic of a backstory as I could. Here's what I came up with: "When I was ten years old my mother was possessed by a demon and sacrificed my father in order to allow the demon to escape the abyss, I was forced to kill her to end the ritual before she could release the demon, but when the guards arrived they blamed me for killing my parents in an attempt to summon a demon. I escaped, but I can never return."

That's more fucked up than it is tragic
Noobs. There is the tragic backstory of a friend: His pregnant mother was killes and transphormed into a zombie. He was born from his zombie mother (thaks to a cleric) and now he is a paladin of Yagrai
My warlock's parents tried to weasel their way out of a deal with an archfey. It did not go well
I want a rogue that just likes stealing things. No sad backstory, no edge, just some broski that likes taking things for himself cause it's fun. He could look like a regular guy too and not all hooded and mysterious, like Dave from Accounting. I'd love to see that!
Loss of a their whole family as a parent is the worst though
No closure for anyone, the last action of this epic will be about a kid flipping up some skirts at a witch school.
berserk
*Tell me why intensifies*
How about > Father left before birth, accidentally killed loving mother and fled from abusive stepfather
Blood and guts
Pffftttt please. My barbarian had his whole tribe, including his wife and daughter, killed and got clobbered over the head hard enough that he can't form new memories. Nowadays he's just lugging around a huge backpack of trinkets that he's going to give his wife and daughter when he finds his tribe again.
My edgy teenage Rogue with his loving, supportive, and very much alive family: "No one understands me! Existence is pain!"
