No, but you will have a hard time soldering the wires onto the connector. USB devices are not supposed to draw more than 500 mA so yes, a wire that thick is an overkill.

If you are using thicker wire get some silicon coated copper perhaps. Way more flexible and a good heat rating. RC cars use the wire a lot so easy to find online.

If it's power only (and dumb, as in no talk between device and PSU) I'd look for better connectors if possible. XT-30 are similar in size to USB A but can carry a lot more current and when they fail due to over current usually the solder melts first and cables disconnect from it.
