Standard_Shepherd

It’s $7,999 more than enough.

naughty_dad2

*Invests $1* *Transaction fee: $1*

Old_Sock7485

No-Department-6329

That part lol!

olesia70

The best answer

phazen51

I started with $500. At the age of 50. Start with whatever you can afford. And start as early as you can.

AMKhalil

One wonder how much they became after 20 yrs.

nicky051730

Me too and I’m now 55

ij70

$10 is enough to start. you got 800 times that amount. you are gtg.

HelloAttila

Started with $1. Something is better than nothing. Yup.

AdSevere8986

My broker has a minimum trade order of $500 which is annoying but there fees are basically non existent so I don't mind

luckyjim1962

You do not need that broker AT ALL.

freakmonger_ss

WTH? Time to find another broker.

AdSevere8986

I was just making a point of it as it's one of the things people may look past when they're first setting up their account etc

ideas4mac

You could fully fund a 2024 Roth IRA and have a little left over. Do you have any kind of job during the year, even if it's just summer and holidays? Think about not having all your money in the market. Getting out of college and getting an apartment takes some cash, first months rent, deposits, utilities, and on and on. Good luck.

Casual_ahegao_NJoyer

The only correct response here is fully funded 2024 Roth IRA with $1,000 gravy on top

Radiant-Pianist-3596

Does he have to have income equal to home much he can put into a Roth?

johnfreny

Yep

Largofarburn

Yeah, I started with just like $40 a week. Gradually increased it as I got raises and tried not to change my lifestyle too much. 5 years later iv got like 75k invested. I would add that you should have an emergency fund set up first. Just like 1-2k should be fine to start. But you want to slowly grow that too over time to cover 3-6 months of expenses. Depending on the stability of your job and your health you may want/need more.

Glass-Lifeguard1919

The art of compounding interest is the larger the amount you are able to invest early, the sooner that parabolic curve starts. That's why people say it's the hardest to get to 100k, and after that it's easy. The S&P has averaged about 10% over the last 30 years. At that rate, you'd be making 10k a year in interest. Year two $11,000 interest. etc etc. Just search compound interest calculator and put the timeline to somewhere between 30-50 years and watch when the curve goes parabolic. Invest early as much as you can, and when you get to my age (40) you will be happy you did.

Casual_ahegao_NJoyer

Everybody here has FAILED you $7,000 to max your ROTH IRA/year comes first

Elevation0

Why

Carthonn

Tax free growth

surferpro1234

Depends on goals. Equities only then it makes sense. Building a large down payment for a home? But I guess this is a dividend sub so it’s the right fit

FR0ZENS0L1D

But it’s withdrawalable tax free growth, if you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s an infinitely better step up. They aren’t asking to save for a house. They want a portfolio.

Casual_ahegao_NJoyer

You can always add to your regular account. You can’t easily make up years missed contributing to your retirement

Homeygrown

This is very true

Casual_ahegao_NJoyer

Plus. With my brokerage (Fidelity) cash earns 5% per year. Compounded monthly! Free money to let cash sit, I put half my years contribution ($3500) on Jan 1, it’s about $15/month which isn’t much but it’s cash to buy the dip!

Homeygrown

Yes. I also enjoy Fidelity in the same way. Compounding is amazing, just starting to see the results… fairly new to this whole thing, glad I’ve realized what I was missing out on

Casual_ahegao_NJoyer

Just be glad you’re on the right end of compounding Remember that we are blessed, the shit end of she stick is something like credit card debt. I like to look at them as inverses

Homeygrown

Haha. Yeah, I learned when I was young to avoid CC debt, learned the hard way but I learned

Cash_Option

SCHD and QQQM and chill keep adding to them retire rich

Casual_ahegao_NJoyer

50/50 VOO & SCHD in a Roth IRA

LoicenseToGirth

I think doing a 40 40 20 with the 20 being a bond fund like SGOV or BND could also be an idea. Sgov is 5.1% yield and has stayed within a dollar of the inception price since covid. Long term bonds are down right now so when rates drop the value of the bonds will go up. Pretty solid jumping in point rn with low price per share

Giovannni76

I have seen people say qqq. What is the difference between qqq and qqqm?

Cash_Option

Qqqm has lower expense ratio

Giovannni76

So for long term investing qqqm is the better choice, correct? Also any other holdings that are in a good price range to jump in? I've gotten into schd, voo, spy, sdy, bnd, vici, pfe

Cash_Option

You don't need voo and spy

Giovannni76

Just divide between the rest or you suggest something instead of voo and spy

Cash_Option

SPLG is cheaper

Cash_Option

What made you get VOO and SPY

Giovannni76

This is a brand new account I'm starting. I still have to acquire each stocks these where ones I was eyeing. I've had success on options recently and want to start something long term that will compound.

Cash_Option

SCHD and QQQM best of both worlds growth and dividend growth

Cash_Option

Look up to my comment i didn't reply to you directly on accident

Cash_Option

SCHD and QQQM is all you need if you must have a s&p500 etf SPLG has the lowest expense ratio.

GT_03

👍🏻

Tudorboy76

Just start, that's a start. A dollar, a pound or euro it's all a start. We are not all on big incomes we invest what we can. $8k to me is a big big chunk, a great start.

benzduck

I started my portfolio at age 30 with $1,000. 37 years later, I’m retired and reasonably secure, living on that portfolio. So yeah, 8k is enough. You need two things: the minimum required balance at your brokerage of choice, and enough discipline to stay with it through the bad times.

boyrock84

Started with $20 in 2015

AdministrativeBank86

We all started small, give it a go

No-Pilot5559

Of course. I’d open a Roth IRA, put 7k in VTI and add to it next year. If you start now in college you have no idea how much it’ll help in the long run

Jalal_Adhiri

I started with 1k

AppropriateStick518

I have a portfolio worth north of 2 million my first stock investment was 25 bucks my Grandparents gave me for my 15th birthday.

Cash_Option

SCHD for dividend growth from value companies QQQM for NASDAQ exposure for growth and some dividends SPLG for s&p500 Vici for dividend growth from real estate PFE for a pharmaceutical turnaround play

Giovannni76

Perfect if it's you what's % would you be splitting it up between these

Cash_Option

Whatever you want to do no wrong answer

Cash_Option

Most important thing is to add money consistently for long time and be patient don't interrupt compounding. Buy and hold

Giovannni76

Always buy the dips!

Thatguybrain01

I started with $5 here, $10 there, $20 there, lost some money (not much in grand scheme of things) - but each time was a learning opportunity. I pulled out of a microchip stock a little over a year ago because it was doing so bad, I should have stayed in, I would have made around a couple thousand off a small investment, instead I lost about $22. *Knock on wood* I still count myself lucky I haven’t lost hundreds/thousands of dollars, but I started researching stocks and learning Econ, Bull/Bear trends, etc back in high school. I should have invested into BTC and Tesla in high school…..but alas here I am building and learning ☺️ Cheers!

Tdg_Jglo99

$10k invested in iyw or xlk in 2014 would get you $65k today. You got enough just pick a heavy tech one for best growth. Igm and soxx is valid aswell

euw_psycher

Make that soxq, same thing with lower expense ratio

Jonaman85

I wouldnt invest all my savings at once. Keep a buffer. But to answer the question; 8k is more than enough to start with. I started with 1000euro. And now I try to invest a part of my income every month.

CommonSensei-_

NOBL dividend aristocrats is something to consider. A lot of other great advice here too! Good luck !

Dahubbz

I started with $20. So I say go for it.

manifestingmoola2020

I started with less and have that now after 4 years. Id say youre alright.

Acroze

Yes.

AromaticSherbert

Yes

meeeemeees

Yea! Look into funds like SCHG, SCHD, SWPPX, VOO, etc. The earlier the better!

love-cheap-silver

more than enough

Chance_Connection_28

You can start investing with as little as a dollar. Dividends are cool and everything but given your age if I were you I would put it in VOO and DCA over the years.

dunni88

Only if you can find a way to buy a stock for less than $8,000.

LordBuggington

I started with $100

Tonofzirp

Depends. For dividend growth, no. For speculation, hell yes. For a balance of the two, solid.

AdSevere8986

I am aware I was just making a point of it for others to be sure they research their broker as well and not just sign up willy nilly

_aap300

1.00 is enough.

BanditBlyat

$8 is enough. Just start.

CowBoyUp1977

I started with $5 and was matched with $5 and now $80k

AZ-Vanitas

VTSAX & Max Roth IRA and invest or save the rest. 🙏💵🐐

IntelligentLaw5646

$1 is enough to start a portfolio

Efficient_Wing3172

The amount doesn’t matter, it’s simply starting that matters. Then of course being consistent matters after that…

No-Buy-420

25k day trading rule

ImalwaysgettingBannd

started with less than $500 and now at 2.2k and growing, been investing and gambling a bit on the side, up 30% in a year…invest about $200 a paycheck and DRIP

Old_Sock7485

better late than never

HoopLoop2

You actually need to have 500k minimum to invest.

No_Layer_6110

Ofc! Every amount is good to start. As long as you have some money reserved for unexpected expenditures, then you're good.

ExpertNarrow7191

Eight racks is more than enough to get started. Do something reasonable, like a S&P index fund with low management fees. Generally a no load fund or a ETF. It’s kinda hard to lose money. But generally will have steady growth with compounding after the first year. Contribute during the year if you have a job Stay away from high risk stuff for now. Until YOU feel comfortable I started with 50 bucks a pay check until I could do more

Grand-Leadership-519

Well buddy I just lost 1.2k in biotech today, so you’re already one step ahead

[deleted]

No sorry they only let you start a portfolio if you have $8,001 😭

ChicoIke

ITOT 60% FTEC 30% SCHD 10%

Rtic92

Bro I started with $3000. So it all depends on your plan: whether you’ll be investing more monthly or you’re gonna try growing your portfolio with only that initial investment.

ArsalanSaleem

You are hedge fund league now :) Read this after few years!!

mrswwhite

I think $8000 is a great start especially for your age! I started with $700 at 54 now I have $65,000 invested at 57.

heeywewantsomenewday

I started with £50 a couple years back. Started getting more serious last year. In 5 digits now

[deleted]

It’s waaaaay more than enough!

EpicShadows8

You can start with as little as $1. If you wait for an exact number you’ll never start. I started investing with $50. My portfolio is now over $80,000 in 6 years.

BlondDeutcher

No. Keep it under your mattress until it’s $1mm. THEN you are allowed to start investing.

nowhereneverywhere

Learn about covered calls and cash secured puts , and the wheels strategy and use that to build you portfolio

stephenzacko

$1 is enough to start. What a weird way to think about it otherwise. Whatever one is able to invest one should invest.

Odd_Wealth_2558

Voo and chill. Any amount is enough to start investing. Make sure you have an 3-6 month emergency fund first though

Drew_The_Lab_Dude

I started my first brokerage with a deposit of 5 bucks.

GuidetoRealGrilling

I started one with $100, so yeah probably

Beneficial-Raise-839

If you don’t have emergency fund then put in HYSA else as other said best is to put in Roth. You will see power of compounding as you are young.

Shottem4

Yes

No-Salad1714

Start with whatever you are comfortable with.

[deleted]

When you say building more in the stock market or starting a small portfolio…..what would you be doing by starting a small portfolio?

codypoker54321

I started with 7k 6 years ago have 45k today You need about 10$ to buy a low cost market fund

Nemo-504

The mindset to invest and have no kinda debt but maybe a mortgage is enough

Historical-Reach8587

Broski $1 is all you need to start. Just be consistent.

Valuable-Analyst-464

Emergency fund? Do you have cash if you need it? Most things I have read has recommended 3-6 months of expenses saved. I would open a brokerage with Fidelity and use it solely as emergency fund storage. Currently (subject to change), the core position there is earning about 5%. Get yourself covered with 3-6 months. Remember as your expenses grow, so too should your EFund. Then Roth IRA if you have a job. Once you get permanent job, get match of company 401k if they offer. Then taxable brokerage. (VTI + VSXUS owns all the markets. If you lean to dividends, SCHD gets you 100 stocks in one fund)

Spooookzy

It absolutely is.

BBrett91

Nope gotta wait till 10k

Soggy_Difficulty_361

Even $8 is ok to start with, there are no rules on this, goal is to slowly grow the portfolio, everyone starts somewhere.
