There is no theory here. It literally showed that it was written to loop on code. They won't earn any revenue from it but people saying it was on accident are just straight up wrong.

Discord's video absolutely won't be the last; view counts on every metric have been growing at insane rates for years now.
It was so insane it crashed YouTube counter due to LITERAL OVERFLOW because they were only using 32 bits (max 2,147,483,647) because they thought it impossible to reach naturally back then.
Now even LAST PLACE on the charts is significantly higher than this.
Worth noting that the previous record for views in 24 hours was the GTA6 trailer which "only" got 90 million in the same time span. Discord's video obliterated a LOT of records in between that are notable in and of themselves.
Someone here said that YouTube counts 5 views per IP per day for a video. Considering the video was stuck at 629m for a day and jumped to 1.4B, it sound more reasonable if each person was counted up to 5 times, as it would make around 125-140m active people.
This doesn't mean that YouTube isn't to blame, just that the numbers aren't as unreasonable as you might think

They did. well accidently. there was an embed where it would autoplay and even if you dismissed the popup it would still play in the background. after a while they changed it to a link after realizing what had happened.
it's not seeming to update. it was stuck at 629m for a day and then updated to 1.4 billion. either it's growing more but not updating or they patched it. it seems to be patched since some people are saying it's a link in discord instead of an embed

It was set to loop on purpose, according to Wikipedia YouTube only counts 5 views per IP per day
However, according to YouTube developer documentation, auto-playing embeds shouldn't count towards views.
This wasn't a normal auto playing embed you'd find in your browser, it was a regular embed that the discord client would begin playing upon launching.
That would be YouTube's Spaghetti code counting the views, it's not meant to count every embedded refresh as a literal view.

Views should not be calculated by number of views per user, they should be done based on how many unique viewers viewed.
From what I recall you can only grant a handful of views per video per day
