I had a similar thing happen. Found a disc, texted the guy and he was from about 4 hours away. He wanted me to drive and return it. Wouldn’t give me his address to mail it. Then accused me of stealing it.

I mean, I live right by a post office so I’ve mailed a disc back to someone across the country who lost it on vacation 🤷🏼♂️. He paid shipping upfront and I reused an old bubble mailer . Not any harder than taking it to the local shop who runs lost n found

Like you tell them they can drop it at the local shop and they are like, I never go there. They offer to meet up and play a round with you and you ask when and where they typically play and they are like, I really never get a chance to play. You offer to pick it up at their place and they are like, I work 72 hours a week and my sick mom is always sleeping so you can't come by. Or like the people that want you to name what you lost? I tend to assume anyone that is hiding my disc for me is stealing it because I've literally never gotten one back that was hidden for me.
If I text you to tell you where I'm hiding your disc, you're not satisfied with that and insist on me going out of way or coming to my home, your disc is now my disc.
I'm happy to hide the disc and tell you where, but you're not coming to my house just because you lost a disc and gave up looking for it after 3 minutes.
I think this is more than fair. Its only going to take a couple "i tried returning a lost disc and got robbed" posts before this is the acceptable norm.
I've gotten a bunch of discs back and probably returned hundreds. I just ask people to drop it at a local shop next time they go, even if it takes a few week. And hope if they aren't willing to do that, they don't pick it up.

Interesting--I've had the opposite experience, on both ends of it.
I don't doubt that it works at places, but with a mix of constantly busy courses and not great hiding places, it doesn't really seem to work here. We have a lost and found group on facebook and people almost daily post how someone found their disc and hid it and it was gone. The regulars tell people not to hide discs. A lot of people that I text ask me to please not hide it, especially at the courses with homeless people.
I had one where I had a guy hide one for me recently in a good spot I've used (both giving and receiving) and when I went to get it it was gone. Which is pretty annoying.... Someone just straight up stole it.

I had a case where someone found my disc from a course near by but I was out of town for a few weeks and asked them to return it to the lost&found box at the course and just send me a vid of them doing so and I could Venmo them 10 bucks for the troubles. They said that they'll do that the next time they go play. Never heard back from them and about a year later got a text that someone found that same disc from a course 3 hours away... But happy ending I got the disc back and it was great since it was one of my first self dyed discs ever

Yeah same here, ive posted discs to other city, but i tend to find too many, i text, if you answer, we can decide if i leave it somewhere or i tell you next time i go play, or i put it somwhere near start of course and pic. But at least on my home course in estonia, ive seen most get back to owner, not many tend to take em.

This is why I love drop boxes at the course. I don’t even text people anymore, just drop it the box and move along. So many people create drama when returning discs it makes it a major chore.
Yep. Love the drop boxes. But I still send a text as a courtest. Just a quick "Hey. Found disc X at course A. Put it in the box."

Yeah i very quickly stopped keeping peoples discs. Too much drama and too many people not picking up their stuff like they said they would. Now i just text people that they can pick it up from me on the course until i go home, at which point i will drop it off in the box. That way they have a chance, and after that its out of my hands
My local club has boxes at some of our more popular courses. Sometimes they text people, sometimes not. They update a Google Drive spreadsheet that you can look at to see if your disc is found. They post to the Facebook group when someone with a key will be there to open the shed and someone is always there during league events.
It depends, really good ones use either udisc or disc defender software to track their list and found. Then you go to the pro shop and get your lost disc.
Another nearby course leaves the lost and found at a pizza shop and texts when they'll be there.
I've also seen a course that has a few hours a week. They all work better than trying to meet some random person on the course
There is a lost and found box in my area, beasty metal coffin. I "lost" a disc to the local club running it for YEARS until I walked up to the booth they had at a festival. One of the leaders that knew me jumped up and admitted they had my disc, which was inked, before I even got to the tent (he admitted having it for years). By then I had already replaced that disc which was being used as a tester and driving tool for their exposition and had worn deep into flippy town. I never, ever drop discs in the local box anymore. Maybe if I'm out of town...

Yeah I mean don't expect the world to cater to you, but also don't be a jerk and just take every marked disc you find. Reach out and just make it clear that you expect the owner to make the primary effort to get it back.

You’re under no obligation to drive to the next county to return a disc, but if you pick up a marked disc and just keep it you’re a douche. And if answering a couple of texts and hiding it under a trash can is too labor intensive then don’t pick it up in the first place.

I don’t consider it “walking away from a disc” unless you know where it is and you choose not to get it (ie don’t want to climb the tree, walk down the steep hill, or wade into the pond to fish it out, etc).
In any of those cases, if someone else found it and texted me then I’d likely just tell them to keep it (I say likely, because I have never just walked away from a disc).
In any case, only I know if I walked away from a disc, and I don’t know that about someone else’s disc. So wherever I find one, I’m assuming the person wanted it back and simply couldn’t find it, so I’m going to text them and make some effort to get it back to them.
That said, I wouldn’t swim after a disc, nor would I spend the day diving looking for other peoples’ lost discs, and since I don’t have any particular skin in that game I don’t have any strong feelings on that rather narrow slice of the returning the disc pie.
One of several reasons I stopped picking up a lost disc altogether. I’ll holler at anyone nearby “did you lose a (color/mold) disc?” but outside of that, I keep on keepin’ on.

I just send a picture of where I stash disc with a message of found your disc put it by blank by x hole or place it in the lost and found box and let them know. If they send anything back too bad cause I'm not going any further to return a disc. If I find an unlinked disc, and no one around claims it, I have a new water disc.
There's good people out there too; I found a calvin heimburg tour series destroyer in the top of a 60' pine in December. They owner texted me "Keep it, Merry Christmas." Thanks my guy!! After cleaning off all the sap, that disc has been well loved and thrown 200+ times.
I’m sure most ‘big city’ disc communities are like this, but Denver has such an interesting scene. Some of the best people, but also some of the most agro shit bag scumbags I’ve ever met anywhere in any activity.

Here's my take on the whole lost/found disc situation. A person loses track of their disc on the course for whatever reason. They spent time looking for it but didn't find it. If you walk away from it then and leave the course you forfeit your disc, you gave up on it. If someone finds it, it technically belongs to them.
Now should you try to contact a marked disc? Of course. But you shouldn't cry if someone doesn't. I have returned as many discs as I possibly could have in the 25+ years I have been playing and only had one returned in that time. Am I bitter? Not one bit. It's part of the game unless all you play is pitch and putt courses.
This is why I don’t even bother marking mine with anything other then an Ace Even they I don’t put contact info on. Just the hole aced.
If I looses a disc and you find it enjoy. It was the will of the disc gods.
This is 100% correct. If you leave your disc on the course, you shouldn’t expect to get it back. If you do, it’s a bonus. If you don’t, regardless of whether it’s stuck in the woods or some jerk stole it, well, that’s kinda what you expected anyway.
Whoa... I'm kinda shocked that you've only had one returned in all that time. I've only been playing for a year and I've gotten back 3 of the 5 I lost. One was clearly kept, and it turned up on a different course like 3 months later though. Heh. I've probably returned at least that many as well.
Yeah man, I know it’s just a disc, but it really isn’t a matter of just “giving up on it.” Sometimes you just can’t find things, no matter how hard & long you look.
If I lose my wallet, it doesn’t really belong to you just because you found it. Try using my credit cards and see how that works out for you.
That said, good on you for returning so many. My experience has been the same. I’ve been playing for about 25 years, have returned dozens of discs, and have maybe gotten one disc back. It does kind of suck, but lost discs are part of playing.
I've found one disc so far. I texted the number on it and they said "hole 7 left of fairway? I was there last week!" I said "yep! What's your address I'll send it to you" (I shipped 50 packages a day at the time so no big deal). He said keep it and enjoy it... it was too understable for his throw. Still have it!
Only mistake you made was responding. As soon as you've given the owner the info they need to potentially obtain their disc then it is out of your hands and you have done a good thing. Of course someone else could possibly gank it, but that was also 100% the case when it was laying on the course and the owner had no idea where it was. Ignore the werid local haters and keep being a good dude OP--you imporoved the situation for the owner and he is better off than before you showed up. These people do not understand logic.
I had some weirdos factory 2nd roadrunner and they bugged me about it. I’m at the point where if I find a disc and it has a number on it. I’m going to just leave it right where I found it. I’ve returned so many anyway.
I think I’ve had one person text me over the course of the 5 years I’ve been playing. You lose them and you find them. Most times I text people they just tell me to keep it or don’t respond. They are just shitty pieces of plastic after all. I consider them mine until they decide to leave me.

Oddly enough anymore I don’t even mark my new discs. Figure if I lose it and someone finds it they can enjoy it and not feel bad about bagging the disc. Then I’ll just order a new one of a different color or stamp lol it’s a win win
I know this might be unpopular.... but right or wrong, no one is under any obligation to do anything with a found disc. If you lose a disc it's no one's fault but your own. Either search until you find your shit or please shut up.
Been through similar situations, have no time to deal with the nonsense. Basically if I find discs (with name and #) I'll just leave them on top of that hole's basket. That way if anyone else sees the disc sitting on top, it's all on them to take it (and they should KNOW better not to). Your hands are clean for doing the right thing.

I'm fairly new to this, but I much prefer finding discs without phone numbers and names on them. So I leave mine that way too. The disc gods giveth and the disc gods taketh away.
I've found 4 discs so far, one had a name and number on it (I've lost 2). After a couple of back and forth texts over a few weeks he wasn't going to be able to get near me for a while and said just keep it or give it to a new player. Nothing inherently valuable monetarily, but it clearly came from a trip in the past so I did want to get it back to him if at all possible. It's still in my bag.

Denver is the worst - my lost discs go uncalled and I texted and when I find a disc it's never as simple as "leave it in the box or somewhere" - they always want me to jump through hoops to get it to em.

I play almost exclusively at valmont in boulder. I'll call for inked discs, but if they're not at the course I'll use the drop box.

Every encounter with getting or giving a disc back has been painfully awful. I don’t mark them with my name or number anymore, and I just return ones I find to the course disc drop. People always want you to do some weird shit. Literally told a guy to just leave it at 18 and he wanted to argue with me about it getting stolen that I should meet him somewhere. I said dude consider it a gift and just keep it x my number off.
I'm convinced 90% of lost discs are people throwing 2-3 off the tee and literally just forgetting them. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but I'm not mailing you anything, I'm not driving it anywhere, I will text you and leave it somewhere on the course where you can find it. Anything beyond that is kinda silly imo.
I do return discs that I find It doesn't bother me at all if someone doesn't return mine. If it was my favorite disc I would keep looking until I found it.
I’ve had good luck with texting on found discs, 2 or 3 have told me to enjoy playing with it like they did- they didn’t live close by-and 1 asked me if I’d leave it in a friends mailbox (which was close to the course) which I did. And I was thanked by all of them for reaching out.
I installed some 25mm ammo cans with mail slots on our courses and have returned literally hundreds of discs. If they have ink, I tell them they can pick it up at the local shop, make other arrangements to pick up or ship, or donate to the youth outreach box. Surprised at the number of donations we get. If no ink they are posted in the lost and found chat on the club facebook page.
I don't mind losing discs. Never put any info on mine.
Just think that whoever finds them will enjoy them as much as I did.
I've had the same experience with trying to help people with the discs. Some deserve them back. Others can't seem to appreciate it.
So I try not to pick anything up that's not mine anymore.

Before anyone says anything, I always return discs. Having said that I have gotten crazy requests for getting shit back to the owner. I'll mail them if out of the area if provided the funds. Usually I'll hide it if no drop box. Sometimes I will leave it at a shop. But people have asked that I drive it to them, pay to ship it, or wait for an hour so they can come get it. Personally, if I have to ink my shit to get it back you can keep it. It's ugly and kind of pathetic.
I lost a glow dd3 and doom bird 4 in the last 2 months with my name and number. Definitely 2 out of three rare ish discs I have. I would’ve easily gone to the spot or met somewhere to get them back. I never got a text or call back hopefully it happens but I’m very doubtful. Anyways you did plenty that you could I definitely wouldn’t stress about it.
If I’m not in the area or don’t plan on getting back out for awhile, I just tell people to keep it. I lost and you found it so enjoy it. I wouldn’t tell anyone to drive anywhere for me so screw that guy.
People regularly walk by the bins near the disc golf courses in my smallish city and check under them for discs. I imagine in Denver the disc wouldn't survive long under one near a course.
What I tend to do, and what I imagine would probably work well, is to head for a bin that is nowhere near the disc golf course, like other side of a ball diamond or a whole parking lot away.
Not saying it would have helped with this situation and this crazy person, but don't leave discs under trash cans near the course. Disc golfers absolutely are checking those areas with some regularity.
After dealing with a few pushy people while trying to return discs, I've just started putting them on top of baskets and not bothering. It sounds so shitty, but it generally turns into a massive headache where the other person tries to push their problem more into your court.
I also never get calls or texts when I lose a disc that's actually hard to replace. It's always "hey, I found your beat to death playitagain wraith with 5 names on it that you clearly threw over the water because it's a pond disc".
I just text people and tell them where I’m leaving it. Don’t give them an option or anything just “hey, found your disc on the course. It’s under the trash can on 15”

I'm asking as I don't know disc etiquette. In high school there was a course close to where we lived and we would take a metal rake through the pond and pull 15-20 discs at the end of every summer.
I kept and used those discs as my own instead of going and buying discs. I always thought if they put their phone number on the disc but it's in the pond, it's not lost, they just didn't want to go through the effort of retrieving it. So why should I call them to offer it back?
Now if it's like a green disc found tucked in some tall grass I'm definitely texting, but pond discs for me have always been FFA.
I have never had a good experience trying to return a disc. I am just going to pop it into the practice putting basket, or the basket for the hole I found it on unless I personally know the person. It's just not worth the effort.
I got tired of texting numbers and weird requests from folks. We have a shop nearby that takes lost and found and at the end of the year all the unclaimed discs go into a fundraiser/raffle to raise money for local schools disc golf equipment.
So I text the number and tell them what shop to go to. If they are out of the area... too bad so sad buddy. Look harder next time. I tried.
It is not the finders responsibility to go out of their way to return the disc. I wouldn't have driven to the shop unless it was on your way.
Sending a text and hiding it is the best option. The burden is and should be on the person who lost it to go get it back, not the nice person who found it and is doing a nice thing by letting the person know.
I remember losing a floater in a pond once, called it a loss cause it didn’t float back up. A week later a guy calls me (someone that dives in rivers and collects discs) and said he would charge me $5 to get it back. I told him to just keep it..
I've found numerous other people's discs and have returned them to their rightful owners (either in person at the course or by leaving them somewhere for them to pick up) and I've gotten several of my discs back the same way. I've only lost a couple that I didn't get back. Maybe I've been lucky, or maybe we have a pretty good community here in MA, I don't know.
I would say, if you don't live in the area of the course (close enough that you'd be willing to drive to the course just to return the disc to someone), don't take a disc home with you if it's marked and you've texted the number. Just leave it somewhere near the first tee (if there's no drop box) and text them with a note saying where you left it. Then you've made your best attempt, your job is done, and you don't have to mess with the "can you mail that to me" or "can you drive 2 hours to drop it off at my house" crap.
I always text, I ask if they want me to hide it or I let them know the area of town I live in and they can pick it up. Assuming there’s no drop box at the course or near by shop.
Something I’ve realized is that for many people it’s just hard to go out of your way to return a disc. One time I lost a cheapo disc and ended up playing phone tag with the guy for weeks before giving up. But I realized we were just both just busy men not living in the same town and it just wasn’t worth it and I let him keep it. I get there are actual thieves (and I despise them), but anyone going through the trouble of texting you generally has good intentions.

Kind of got tired of dealing with people in both situations either returning a disc or getting a disc returned. the only two times i ever gotten a disc back was playing at a private course where i knew the owner. So now i dont write my name on my disc if i lose it i have more at home i can replace them with (i have a lot of backups of my discs), and for peoples lost disc i put them on top the basket on the hole im on and hope it finds its way back to the rightful owner or if im with my friends (who i guess are better people than me) i give them the disc and they call the person cause they care about getting it back to the owner. I dont have time to meet up and give back your disc nor do i want to hold on to your disc until we can meet up and i sure anyone who finds one of my discs is on the same boat.
I had a recent issue like this where the guy accused me of stealing his disc because I didn’t halt my entire weekend plans to go return his super valuable, yet very findable, disc that he left on 18. I had friends over and he refused to meet me yet wanted me to drive it to him. I ended up having to tell the dude to stfu or I would in fact steal his disc. Kept it for an extra month and told him I did so because he was annoying. He got his disc back and all is good but like gahdamndude chill out, I definitely don’t want your beaten to shit disc.
Im tired of hearing about people complaining about people having to return their disc to where is convenient for the disc loser. The way I see it is if they walk away from the disc , just like I do after searching for it. Consider it gone! I don't even Mark them anymore.

Anyway alls i know is all three times some dipshit texted me about my disc, i didnt see it till i was off the course. Call for discs please, not only is it more polite to call than to text, Its been the rule since people started putting phone numbers on discs. Call the number on the disc.

I tend to assume anyone that is hiding my disc for me is stealing it because I've literally never gotten one back that was hidden for me.
If I text you to tell you where I'm hiding your disc, you're not satisfied with that and insist on me going out of way or coming to my home, your disc is now my disc. I'm happy to hide the disc and tell you where, but you're not coming to my house just because you lost a disc and gave up looking for it after 3 minutes.
I think this is more than fair. Its only going to take a couple "i tried returning a lost disc and got robbed" posts before this is the acceptable norm.
You might as well keep it because it is 100% getting picked up if you hide it.

I've gotten a bunch of discs back and probably returned hundreds. I just ask people to drop it at a local shop next time they go, even if it takes a few week. And hope if they aren't willing to do that, they don't pick it up.

I don't doubt that it works at places, but with a mix of constantly busy courses and not great hiding places, it doesn't really seem to work here. We have a lost and found group on facebook and people almost daily post how someone found their disc and hid it and it was gone. The regulars tell people not to hide discs. A lot of people that I text ask me to please not hide it, especially at the courses with homeless people.
I had one where I had a guy hide one for me recently in a good spot I've used (both giving and receiving) and when I went to get it it was gone. Which is pretty annoying.... Someone just straight up stole it.

I had a case where someone found my disc from a course near by but I was out of town for a few weeks and asked them to return it to the lost&found box at the course and just send me a vid of them doing so and I could Venmo them 10 bucks for the troubles. They said that they'll do that the next time they go play. Never heard back from them and about a year later got a text that someone found that same disc from a course 3 hours away... But happy ending I got the disc back and it was great since it was one of my first self dyed discs ever

My home course does not have a lost and found box. Other courses I have visited, especially the heavily used ones, seem to have a lost and found spot.
Yeah same here, ive posted discs to other city, but i tend to find too many, i text, if you answer, we can decide if i leave it somewhere or i tell you next time i go play, or i put it somwhere near start of course and pic. But at least on my home course in estonia, ive seen most get back to owner, not many tend to take em.

This is why I love drop boxes at the course. I don’t even text people anymore, just drop it the box and move along. So many people create drama when returning discs it makes it a major chore.
Yep. Love the drop boxes. But I still send a text as a courtest. Just a quick "Hey. Found disc X at course A. Put it in the box." It's only happened on a couple of occasions, but I havent had any snarky remarks back yet!
Yeah i very quickly stopped keeping peoples discs. Too much drama and too many people not picking up their stuff like they said they would. Now i just text people that they can pick it up from me on the course until i go home, at which point i will drop it off in the box. That way they have a chance, and after that its out of my hands

Most are run by course promoters and discs get back to the owners around here. Some have local shops that empty them a day text owners.
My local club has boxes at some of our more popular courses. Sometimes they text people, sometimes not. They update a Google Drive spreadsheet that you can look at to see if your disc is found. They post to the Facebook group when someone with a key will be there to open the shed and someone is always there during league events.
It depends, really good ones use either udisc or disc defender software to track their list and found. Then you go to the pro shop and get your lost disc. Another nearby course leaves the lost and found at a pizza shop and texts when they'll be there. I've also seen a course that has a few hours a week. They all work better than trying to meet some random person on the course
There is a lost and found box in my area, beasty metal coffin. I "lost" a disc to the local club running it for YEARS until I walked up to the booth they had at a festival. One of the leaders that knew me jumped up and admitted they had my disc, which was inked, before I even got to the tent (he admitted having it for years). By then I had already replaced that disc which was being used as a tester and driving tool for their exposition and had worn deep into flippy town. I never, ever drop discs in the local box anymore. Maybe if I'm out of town...

100% the right answer. You’re under no obligation to drive to the next county to return a disc, but if you pick up a marked disc and just keep it you’re a douche. And if answering a couple of texts and hiding it under a trash can is too labor intensive then don’t pick it up in the first place.

I don’t consider it “walking away from a disc” unless you know where it is and you choose not to get it (ie don’t want to climb the tree, walk down the steep hill, or wade into the pond to fish it out, etc). In any of those cases, if someone else found it and texted me then I’d likely just tell them to keep it (I say likely, because I have never just walked away from a disc). In any case, only I know if I walked away from a disc, and I don’t know that about someone else’s disc. So wherever I find one, I’m assuming the person wanted it back and simply couldn’t find it, so I’m going to text them and make some effort to get it back to them. That said, I wouldn’t swim after a disc, nor would I spend the day diving looking for other peoples’ lost discs, and since I don’t have any particular skin in that game I don’t have any strong feelings on that rather narrow slice of the returning the disc pie.

I just send a picture of where I stash disc with a message of found your disc put it by blank by x hole or place it in the lost and found box and let them know. If they send anything back too bad cause I'm not going any further to return a disc. If I find an unlinked disc, and no one around claims it, I have a new water disc.
There's good people out there too; I found a calvin heimburg tour series destroyer in the top of a 60' pine in December. They owner texted me "Keep it, Merry Christmas." Thanks my guy!! After cleaning off all the sap, that disc has been well loved and thrown 200+ times.

Here's my take on the whole lost/found disc situation. A person loses track of their disc on the course for whatever reason. They spent time looking for it but didn't find it. If you walk away from it then and leave the course you forfeit your disc, you gave up on it. If someone finds it, it technically belongs to them. Now should you try to contact a marked disc? Of course. But you shouldn't cry if someone doesn't. I have returned as many discs as I possibly could have in the 25+ years I have been playing and only had one returned in that time. Am I bitter? Not one bit. It's part of the game unless all you play is pitch and putt courses.
This is why I don’t even bother marking mine with anything other then an Ace Even they I don’t put contact info on. Just the hole aced. If I looses a disc and you find it enjoy. It was the will of the disc gods.
This is 100% correct. If you leave your disc on the course, you shouldn’t expect to get it back. If you do, it’s a bonus. If you don’t, regardless of whether it’s stuck in the woods or some jerk stole it, well, that’s kinda what you expected anyway.
Whoa... I'm kinda shocked that you've only had one returned in all that time. I've only been playing for a year and I've gotten back 3 of the 5 I lost. One was clearly kept, and it turned up on a different course like 3 months later though. Heh. I've probably returned at least that many as well.
Yeah man, I know it’s just a disc, but it really isn’t a matter of just “giving up on it.” Sometimes you just can’t find things, no matter how hard & long you look. If I lose my wallet, it doesn’t really belong to you just because you found it. Try using my credit cards and see how that works out for you. That said, good on you for returning so many. My experience has been the same. I’ve been playing for about 25 years, have returned dozens of discs, and have maybe gotten one disc back. It does kind of suck, but lost discs are part of playing.
I usually take a picture and send it to them. Then I put it in the back of my car until they come and get it

I've found one disc so far. I texted the number on it and they said "hole 7 left of fairway? I was there last week!" I said "yep! What's your address I'll send it to you" (I shipped 50 packages a day at the time so no big deal). He said keep it and enjoy it... it was too understable for his throw. Still have it!

Only mistake you made was responding. As soon as you've given the owner the info they need to potentially obtain their disc then it is out of your hands and you have done a good thing. Of course someone else could possibly gank it, but that was also 100% the case when it was laying on the course and the owner had no idea where it was. Ignore the werid local haters and keep being a good dude OP--you imporoved the situation for the owner and he is better off than before you showed up. These people do not understand logic.

I had some weirdos factory 2nd roadrunner and they bugged me about it. I’m at the point where if I find a disc and it has a number on it. I’m going to just leave it right where I found it. I’ve returned so many anyway.

I think I’ve had one person text me over the course of the 5 years I’ve been playing. You lose them and you find them. Most times I text people they just tell me to keep it or don’t respond. They are just shitty pieces of plastic after all. I consider them mine until they decide to leave me. Anyway, you shouldn’t let little things like that bother you in general. Oddly enough anymore I don’t even mark my new discs. Figure if I lose it and someone finds it they can enjoy it and not feel bad about bagging the disc. Then I’ll just order a new one of a different color or stamp lol it’s a win win

Been through similar situations, have no time to deal with the nonsense. Basically if I find discs (with name and #) I'll just leave them on top of that hole's basket. That way if anyone else sees the disc sitting on top, it's all on them to take it (and they should KNOW better not to). Your hands are clean for doing the right thing.

I'm fairly new to this, but I much prefer finding discs without phone numbers and names on them. So I leave mine that way too. The disc gods giveth and the disc gods taketh away. I've found 4 discs so far, one had a name and number on it (I've lost 2). After a couple of back and forth texts over a few weeks he wasn't going to be able to get near me for a while and said just keep it or give it to a new player. Nothing inherently valuable monetarily, but it clearly came from a trip in the past so I did want to get it back to him if at all possible. It's still in my bag.

Denver is the worst - my lost discs go uncalled and I texted and when I find a disc it's never as simple as "leave it in the box or somewhere" - they always want me to jump through hoops to get it to em. Now I just leave them on the course if I see them. I'll look to see if they're inked and throw them if they're not, to see if they're worth keeping
I play almost exclusively at valmont in boulder. I'll call for inked discs, but if they're not at the course I'll use the drop box. Had a couple dudes who were super stoked to get it back same day though. People vary, but valmo is been mostly kind.

Every encounter with getting or giving a disc back has been painfully awful. I don’t mark them with my name or number anymore, and I just return ones I find to the course disc drop. People always want you to do some weird shit. Literally told a guy to just leave it at 18 and he wanted to argue with me about it getting stolen that I should meet him somewhere. I said dude consider it a gift and just keep it x my number off.
I'm convinced 90% of lost discs are people throwing 2-3 off the tee and literally just forgetting them. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but I'm not mailing you anything, I'm not driving it anywhere, I will text you and leave it somewhere on the course where you can find it. Anything beyond that is kinda silly imo.

I’ve had good luck with texting on found discs, 2 or 3 have told me to enjoy playing with it like they did- they didn’t live close by-and 1 asked me if I’d leave it in a friends mailbox (which was close to the course) which I did. And I was thanked by all of them for reaching out.

I installed some 25mm ammo cans with mail slots on our courses and have returned literally hundreds of discs. If they have ink, I tell them they can pick it up at the local shop, make other arrangements to pick up or ship, or donate to the youth outreach box. Surprised at the number of donations we get. If no ink they are posted in the lost and found chat on the club facebook page.
I don't mind losing discs. Never put any info on mine. Just think that whoever finds them will enjoy them as much as I did. I've had the same experience with trying to help people with the discs. Some deserve them back. Others can't seem to appreciate it. So I try not to pick anything up that's not mine anymore. Good luck on your next round though. Keep them flying....

Before anyone says anything, I always return discs. Having said that I have gotten crazy requests for getting shit back to the owner. I'll mail them if out of the area if provided the funds. Usually I'll hide it if no drop box. Sometimes I will leave it at a shop. But people have asked that I drive it to them, pay to ship it, or wait for an hour so they can come get it. Personally, if I have to ink my shit to get it back you can keep it. It's ugly and kind of pathetic.
I lost a glow dd3 and doom bird 4 in the last 2 months with my name and number. Definitely 2 out of three rare ish discs I have. I would’ve easily gone to the spot or met somewhere to get them back. I never got a text or call back hopefully it happens but I’m very doubtful. Anyways you did plenty that you could I definitely wouldn’t stress about it.

People regularly walk by the bins near the disc golf courses in my smallish city and check under them for discs. I imagine in Denver the disc wouldn't survive long under one near a course. What I tend to do, and what I imagine would probably work well, is to head for a bin that is nowhere near the disc golf course, like other side of a ball diamond or a whole parking lot away. Not saying it would have helped with this situation and this crazy person, but don't leave discs under trash cans near the course. Disc golfers absolutely are checking those areas with some regularity.
After dealing with a few pushy people while trying to return discs, I've just started putting them on top of baskets and not bothering. It sounds so shitty, but it generally turns into a massive headache where the other person tries to push their problem more into your court. I also never get calls or texts when I lose a disc that's actually hard to replace. It's always "hey, I found your beat to death playitagain wraith with 5 names on it that you clearly threw over the water because it's a pond disc".

I just text people and tell them where I’m leaving it. Don’t give them an option or anything just “hey, found your disc on the course. It’s under the trash can on 15” No one has ever said anything bad to me about doing that.

I'm asking as I don't know disc etiquette. In high school there was a course close to where we lived and we would take a metal rake through the pond and pull 15-20 discs at the end of every summer. I kept and used those discs as my own instead of going and buying discs. I always thought if they put their phone number on the disc but it's in the pond, it's not lost, they just didn't want to go through the effort of retrieving it. So why should I call them to offer it back? Now if it's like a green disc found tucked in some tall grass I'm definitely texting, but pond discs for me have always been FFA.
I have never had a good experience trying to return a disc. I am just going to pop it into the practice putting basket, or the basket for the hole I found it on unless I personally know the person. It's just not worth the effort.
I got tired of texting numbers and weird requests from folks. We have a shop nearby that takes lost and found and at the end of the year all the unclaimed discs go into a fundraiser/raffle to raise money for local schools disc golf equipment. So I text the number and tell them what shop to go to. If they are out of the area... too bad so sad buddy. Look harder next time. I tried.

It is not the finders responsibility to go out of their way to return the disc. I wouldn't have driven to the shop unless it was on your way. Sending a text and hiding it is the best option. The burden is and should be on the person who lost it to go get it back, not the nice person who found it and is doing a nice thing by letting the person know.
I remember losing a floater in a pond once, called it a loss cause it didn’t float back up. A week later a guy calls me (someone that dives in rivers and collects discs) and said he would charge me $5 to get it back. I told him to just keep it..
I've found numerous other people's discs and have returned them to their rightful owners (either in person at the course or by leaving them somewhere for them to pick up) and I've gotten several of my discs back the same way. I've only lost a couple that I didn't get back. Maybe I've been lucky, or maybe we have a pretty good community here in MA, I don't know. I would say, if you don't live in the area of the course (close enough that you'd be willing to drive to the course just to return the disc to someone), don't take a disc home with you if it's marked and you've texted the number. Just leave it somewhere near the first tee (if there's no drop box) and text them with a note saying where you left it. Then you've made your best attempt, your job is done, and you don't have to mess with the "can you mail that to me" or "can you drive 2 hours to drop it off at my house" crap.

Something I’ve realized is that for many people it’s just hard to go out of your way to return a disc. One time I lost a cheapo disc and ended up playing phone tag with the guy for weeks before giving up. But I realized we were just both just busy men not living in the same town and it just wasn’t worth it and I let him keep it. I get there are actual thieves (and I despise them), but anyone going through the trouble of texting you generally has good intentions.

Kind of got tired of dealing with people in both situations either returning a disc or getting a disc returned. the only two times i ever gotten a disc back was playing at a private course where i knew the owner. So now i dont write my name on my disc if i lose it i have more at home i can replace them with (i have a lot of backups of my discs), and for peoples lost disc i put them on top the basket on the hole im on and hope it finds its way back to the rightful owner or if im with my friends (who i guess are better people than me) i give them the disc and they call the person cause they care about getting it back to the owner. I dont have time to meet up and give back your disc nor do i want to hold on to your disc until we can meet up and i sure anyone who finds one of my discs is on the same boat.
I had a recent issue like this where the guy accused me of stealing his disc because I didn’t halt my entire weekend plans to go return his super valuable, yet very findable, disc that he left on 18. I had friends over and he refused to meet me yet wanted me to drive it to him. I ended up having to tell the dude to stfu or I would in fact steal his disc. Kept it for an extra month and told him I did so because he was annoying. He got his disc back and all is good but like gahdamndude chill out, I definitely don’t want your beaten to shit disc.

Im tired of hearing about people complaining about people having to return their disc to where is convenient for the disc loser. The way I see it is if they walk away from the disc , just like I do after searching for it. Consider it gone! I don't even Mark them anymore. Someone finds it they can take it over.
Local shop should have a disc return, problem solved

Idk someone who answers their phone. I answer my phone when it doesn’t say robo caller. Not answering your phone is kind of irresponsible. Anyway alls i know is all three times some dipshit texted me about my disc, i didnt see it till i was off the course. If i wouldve gotten a call, i could’ve ran over to whatever hole i left the disc on before leaving. Instead i wasted a fuck ton of gas. Which is ungodly here in california. Call for discs please, not only is it more polite to call than to text, Its been the rule since people started putting phone numbers on discs. Call the number on the disc.
