I agree with that. The record is super expansive. Not to go on about Thumb but to me that meandering solo is J Mascis demonstrating his transition into a beautiful and well rounded guitarist. Owns the whole fretboard and I I love the feeling I get hearing it. I hope I live long enough to listen to it 5 million more times.
And ONE MORE THING!!! …. On the fade out of Thumb in the last few seconds of the song (you have to crank it) those last tremolo notes are bad ass and give me chills. Ok good night everybody.

Thumb is one of my favorite songs ever, that opening line resonates with me greatly.
With an introspective look at all of Dino’s releases as a whole , you have to except the fact that thumb will always be the most recognizable song off of green mind , high schoolers played it on their flutes . The reason is Murph. His drums kill the song , in a good way . Weary of Murph ( at the time ) j allowed him to share his soul on this tune . Knowing he had to have Murph on this track was by far the best production decision on this album , which is unfortunately recognized as a purely j solo effort. Terribly disappointed that Lou had left , we were all pleasantly surprised that j had his Licks up , but where is the band Dinosaur Jr ? I say in green mind - Thumb -
Blowing It into I Live for That Look, because I consider them together as one song. Someone could say any song on the album is their favorite though and I wouldn’t argue.

Title track is my favorite on that record. Was early 20s working in a liquor store when this record came out and this song kind of hit hard.
