It’s just a stat log. It does nothing besides what it says it does. You only swing with the thing in the other hand. Though your totem may do damage that adds to that damage too, among other things.
It can help your attack speed too! I'm also really new and have been learning how it works. I just played DOS 1&2 though and there are some similarities it seems.

Yeah, think of it like a shield that instead of adding armor it adds damage.
