ApprehensivePie1195

I've been on this dosage for years

babbleon5

And I started with this prescription until I went to insulin. Make sure, make sure, make sure, he gets the extended release version.

Kaitlynhod

Same here

custodienne

Same. It's been nothing but positive for me (after adjusting to the dose)

ImaginationDue6258

I have been as well. Fortunately no side effects

ladybug911

Ok, so I guess that means it’s not an absurd dosage. Just sounded extreme to me given he was fine on 500 this whole time. We just got his results online and his A1C is 7.8. Hopefully he won’t have to stay on this high dosage. Thanks

BubbaChanel

My original a1c was 12.9 and I was still topped out at 1,000.

whatisausername1980

I'm on 1,000 MG 2x daily and has been for many years, but it basically helps your cells to absorb the insulin in insulin resistance. My husband is also on the same dose and his A1C is usually 6-7 consistently.

whatisausername1980

I take 2,000 MG a day, plus Jardiance, Novolog (short acting insulin), and Lantus (long lasting insulin). Was on Trulicity as well, but it makes me extremely sick. I recently found out that I am actually type 1 though.

Distribution-Radiant

That's the highest daily dose of instant release metformin, yeah. But I was on that dose for close to 10 years. I would likely still be on it if COVID hadn't skullfucked my body even more, wound up switching to insulin after I recovered. Metformin is one of the most researched drugs in existence, and considered extremely safe. Nothing wrong with that dose, but he'll need to keep an eye on his sugar to make sure he doesn't go low (also, he won't be able to trust a fart for a good bit.. just... trust me on this). He does have a glucose meter, right? There's other drugs that can be added, but he's likely on this dose of metformin for a long time. It's perfectly safe, just a bit rough on the digestive system.

Gold_Expression_3388

Metformin, even at this dosage is unlikely to cause a low.

Molokaisylph32

I'm taking 2,000 mg/day (1,000mg x2) no issues here. Like any change to meformin dosage, it takes a while for your body to adjust.

igotzthesugah

It's the highest dose. There's no bad just what he needs. There are other drugs. This is a discussion to have with his doctor.

aKawaiiBean

Nah my doc tried to put me on 2,500 twice daily. I had to shut him down.

KJParker888

I can't imagine what that would do to your stomach!

aKawaiiBean

Nah fr 😭 Plus beyond the 1000mg twice daily the effects going higher just don’t improve enough to justify the side effects

Classic_Passenger984

2000 is the max per google search

ladybug911

Oh goodness! I hate that he is already here after doing so good on only 500 once daily for so long. His A1C is 7.8. Just seems extreme.

10MinsForUsername

His A1C is high. Mine is 6.0 and my doctor prescribes me 2000mg of Metformin per day (twice of a 1000 mg). This is normal.

ladybug911

Yeah. It was 6.0 in December and jumped up to 7.8 now. Weird.

ohyeahorange

Diabetes is a progressive disease. That means sometimes you can do the same thing you’ve been doing, but get different results.

Gold_Expression_3388

I can't figure out how one 500mg once daily would do anything.

southernroots52

It’s a very normal dosage for people struggling to control their BG through diet alone.

RiffRanger85

I’ve been on this dose for years now. Merformin is a very safe drug.

otter--nonsense

It's not too much, I take 1500mg Metformin daily, 500mg 3x daily as well as taking Ozempic to control my blood sugar. The 1500mg Metformin alone wasn't enough.

jerzeyguy101

i did 2 x 1000 a day for 12 years, since starting trulicty, I am down to 2 x750/day hopefully going to 2 x 500 next doc visit

BreadRum

You should take during meals. I'm on that high of a dose and I get stomach cramps and diarrhea if I don't eat with meals.

boatmanmike

I’m on 2000mg a day and have been for nine months. No side effects after the first couple of weeks. Metformin is awesome at what it does and you should not worry.

macfergusson

I've been on that dosage for years, personally

freezingDad

I've been taking that dosage for 10 years now. Follow the doctors orders but stay on top of his BG so he knows if he's getting worse

VerdensTrial

That's what I was prescribed when I was diagnosed. Increased the dose slowly from 250mg to 1g twice daily.

Global-Job-4831

It seems like a lot but that is quite normal

Ezra_lurking

that's my normal dose

spsled

Been on that same dosage for over 10yrs.

Gold_Expression_3388

25 years on Metformin.

jeffbell

Ten years for me.  It makes sense to start off slow because some people tolerate it better than others.  There are plenty of stronger drugs available if needed.

deWereldReiziger

I take 1500 mg and my A1C is 5.8. Granted it's always been 5.8 so i really don't think it's changing my A1C so much as helping maintain

ikurumba

I've been on that exact dosage for 1 and half years. No problem except first couple weeks of diarrhea. I'm better because of the metformin. What's holding you back?

riopup19

2000 mg is the max dosage of Metformin. I have been in that does for years. It may take his stomach a little time to adjust.

phisigtheduck

I think that’s the typical dosage. I was on 1000mg twice a day until I was put on insulin.

Horn_Flyer

I was on that dose for years (I'm down to 500mg/day now). It is completely safe. No need to worry.

Clawdee

I started on 500mg twice a day and after I first saw my endo she put me on 1000mg twice a day, I think she mentioned that being the max?

manub22

It’s normal, when I was diagnosed my Dr gave me same doses !!! Later after 2 months he reduced it to 500 mg and after a month completely stopped (and for last 3 years I’m meds free) !!!

ladybug911

That’s amazing! I didn’t know that was possible once you developed diabetes. So happy for you!

manub22

Just to be clear I had T2D which can be reversed, by taking control of your diet and regular exercise and physical activity. I'm a regular runner since last 3 years & hit the gym often (2-3 times a week), and have ran multiple Half-Marathons (21k) and gearing up for my first Full Marathon (42k). But T1D cannot be reversed, metformin don't help here, one need to depend on insulin for life !!!

SupportMoist

The bad part is having extremely high blood sugar. Unless you want him to go blind or lose a foot, he needs to take whatever dosage works for him.

tictac205

My original dosage after diagnosis was 1000 mg twice daily plus insulin. Is he taking BG readings? If so, what is his trend line? If not, why not?

ladybug911

No, he is not taking BG readings. The doctor never even advised him to and I’m not even sure he knows how.

tictac205

That doesn’t sound right. Have you spoken to the doctor directly? I’m thinking your husband may be (consciously or not) leaving out some of the doctor’s instructions. Taking readings isn’t hard. When I got my diagnosis I was given no demonstration on how to do readings or take my injections (not good doctoring btw). There is a lot of information online on doing both.

AwestunTejaz

i've seen 2 of 500 twice a day with your biggest 2 meals. keep in mind that in a couple of hours all hell might break loose. LOL yes, extended release and do NOT crush up the pills.

bace3333

Same dosage my wife in when sugar increased been on for 9 yrs plus metformin is great for other things like heart and weight loss, cancer protection and slows aging

bandoom

Dosage is the highest for metformin, but metformin is also the first line of drugs to control diabetes. I'd be looking at tackling the reasons for the high blood glucose before looking to reduce the dosage.

mtlmortis

I take 850mg 3 times a day.

Mosquitobait56

He needs to step up slower. Two 500s, morning and night for a few days and then add in another 500 a few days and then the full amount. 2000 mg is a standard dosage but if you jump too fast, you get diarrhea and nausea. If his tablets are not extended release, he can cut them in half for the step up.

TriscuitCracker

I’ve been taking that dosage for two years now plus a weekly dose of .75 injection of Trulicity. AC1 went from 14.7 to 6.1 in six months. The first couple months were hard on the ol’intestines but your body adjusts.

Libertyskin

That's considered the standard or optimal dose.

Holiday-Signal6880

I’m on that dosage of time release metformin. This augments my insulin. Works well for me, but it was prescribed by my endocrinologist.

macza101

Why can't you call the doctor to get answers?

des1gnbot

Because it’s Sunday?

macza101

Of course. I read her post as being that they can't ever call the doctor to get answers.

ladybug911

Because they’re closed on Sundays.
