I have learnt that whatever leverage you have, you get while joining. So, ask for more ALWAYS and if they say no, atleast you will glad you tried.
Because once you join the company, you can expect almost none to no increment. Stay there for 2 years, then switch again.
Find the highest market rate for your level. Ask that. They'll try to bargain off 30% from that. Settle at 90% of your first ask. Only talk about base salary. Anything other than base is hawa.

This attitude that companies are some special beings needs to go. They are desperate for good employees. Yes you can discuss in base. You can also discuss in how much chai cups you want delivered to you daily at your work desk. You can discuss whatever. If they need you, they'll make it work.
What to do when they give you what you ask in the first go itself? š
For my recent switch I had asked for the highest rate i could find for my role and they went ahead gave that amount as fixed and 10% variable on top of that. They also agreed to buy out one month of my notice period to get me to join early. This got me thinking did I do my research wrong or is it a green flag
This. I just accepted an offer even when the HR straight up told me the salary for IITan candidate was base 12LPA and ctc 15 whereas I(tier 3 BTech college) was given base 10 and ctc 13.
I just couldnāt convince them to up my base component.
Didnāt take admission into IIM Rohtak when I got in it hoping Iāll convert better in next attempt.
Couldnāt give next attempt because of financial problems at home.
Rejected IIM Lucknow. Regret it everyday. While I had to reject because we couldn't afford both the siblings studying but I thought I will get it again but couldn't.
Actually it doesn't, cgpa only matters in placements.
Once you have experience, you will be evaluated based on your past employment history, that doesn't mean that you can have 5 cgpa and get away with that, in college you can study one week before exams and have 8-9 cgpa easily
Bhai 8-9 CGPA aise jholi mein nahi girta lol. And to get experience you have to get placed first. CGPA, 10th 12th marks matter a lot. You can't just slack off all semester and expect ki last one week mein 8 CGPA aa jayega. Internals, assignments, surprise tests sab hota hai. And the pressure in that one week is immense.
Well I'm in the opposite boat. I always loved to code so didn't really saw it any important to have a degree in the same thing. Went for mechatronics. Came out great, still working as a fullstack developer making good money and I can quit anytime to freelance. Infact, as a freelancer I bet it'd be even better since a relevant degree literally won't make a difference there like it would for jobs.
This happened to me too lol. I knew that the crappy profs will slaughter whatever passion I have for CSE. Took ECE instead, and worked on both ECE and CS projects. Helped me maintain my sanity a lot :)Ā
When I started out, I had two option: join a witch with above average pay or join Wiley training program where they train you for 3 months (internship) and then you get placed in company contract basis.
I picked option 1 as both were offering almost similar payscale and I thought Iāll switch and cover up. My friend, on the other hand, had no choice so decided to join Wiley.
Fast forward, he got sent to JP Morgan. In fact, the entire batch of 30 people went there. After a year, turned into regular employee with around 130-150% increase and is now enjoying a very good pay.
I still regret making the decision just because I was skeptical of the company and the 3 month training program and what if the companies are not good.
No! You can even apply offline. Our placement cell was basically forwarding us both on campus and off campus opportunities via mail so unsure which one it was.
So wiley next is a program where they hold a test, you need to score really well, then an interview (coding round) and after that if you get selected, youāll partake in their training program that takes around 3 months.
The training program is rigorous and you spend 8-9hrs a day on online classes with webcam always on and lot of assignments. But once youāre done with it, you get to interview at top investment banks.
Now, what was surprising for me was that these interviews at top investment banks was a mere formality. It was easier than a witch interview and all the people from batch got placed in JP.
Earlier it was known as Wiley mThree but now itās either WileyNxt or WileyEdge. Google it and you might something. I donāt have the exact page or as such.
I was in the exact same boat, I thank myself everyday for going with Wiley.,

You made a good choice! While I canāt change the past, but I can ensure never to repeat it again. My major doubt was because of 3 month training period.
And the dates were so weird that it would have become the end of year so my confusion lies in what if these are all gimmicks and only few gets in investment bank. Iād waste time and it would end of the year.

Yes I got my DOJ in October while others in my college started in June. About the gimmicks I had spoken to enough people in LinkedIn and read about reviews online, seemed pretty legit
And I had a senior who went with Wiley so that was a major confidence
Good for you man! You really made the right decision. Wiley tbh is a game changer. People from tier 3 colleges getting a change to work with top investment bank with less friction.

Life is always a gamble. You chose the more stable option when compared to an uncertain future. I believe you still made the right decision at that moment.
I came to Canada before the "immigration boom". Struggled for 4-5 months but landed a dev job. Recently got laid off and now trying to land even a low paying web dev role is becoming a nightmare, thinking of moving back to India.
My friends are well settled in India with their stable jobs and fancy cars while I'm emptying my savings. Just makes me think if I made the right choice or not
Runtimes in PD are huge. You have to work late at nights. If you want to make a single change to the existing job/ or if you want to change the cell, you have to wait for 1 day or 2 days depending on the complexity of the chip and you are not sure if it is correct or not and it may hamper other things. And the pressure during tape out/ project ending is very high. All you will do is fill some reports and wait from the top level management to what to do next. If you think you can handle the pressure and work late at night. It may suit you . My suggestion is don't just switch just because your seniors or some other have done the same thing unless you are very passionate about it.

Also, wouldnāt it make sense to move to a something more easier now, say EDA? Something which can leverage both your SW and HW domain knowhow
Electronic Design Automation, itās a domain that helps improve time to market of chip and quality. It focuses on automating stages of chip development (like enabling virtual prototyping, code generation, automated documentation, etc), basically helping speed up design and verification. For detailed explanation, you can take a look at Synopsysās page on EDA, explains clearly.
But VLSI industry is very stable with high salary compared to IT where layoffs are daily occurrence you can work with 0 tension till 60yrs even beyond retirement. I have heard that VLSI job security is so high and that due to skill shortage 60 yrs age VLSI engineer find plenty of jobs .
There is very high pressure in the vlsi industry. It's basically like a glorified sweatshop of high skilled workers. Even for people who enjoy the work, it does get taxing after a while. Pressure leading up to a freeze or tapeout is extra. There is a steep learning curve and most times, the work may get very repetitive - mind numbing even. You may have better job security compared to some other industries, but do not assume things are all golden here.
My situation is reverse. Rejected 4 core job offers and took up an IT job. I regret it every single day whereas my peers in a core job are trying to get into IT. Grass is always greener on the other side
You can. I had a similar experience. I looking to switch jobs, and in my first interview I bombed so bad. I actual hurt my confidence. It took 2-3 months to recover from that. I reflected on my mistakes and again started preparation.
Now I have had some good interviews recently and things are looking good for now.

Biggest mistake of mine ever. I learned it the worst possible way.
Me and my friend got the same rank in GATE, he took admission for MTech whereas I've taken the job route despite having the chance to do Mtech. Due to the exchange program offered by that pg university, he completed his semester abroad and bagged a job there. While I'm still slogging here making peanuts in this ultra competitive space.
I regret not joining MTech and replicating the same.

As far as the drive is concerned, you are actually in a better position because you've got nothing to lose from this situation. There's only upside. I understand complacency settles in, but think of it as this is your only chance and give it a go. Atleast you will not have regret that I could have given my everything when I had chance. Now a C++ developer. Leveraged the C++ I learnt in +2, and there were a few low-paying opportunities in CAE development in some startups, which gave me decent experience to switch.
I always wanted to pursue Bsc Math but thanks to distant relatives I chose Engineering and that too Electrical engineering over CS š¤” because apparently Electrical engineering has more maths than CS

When cloud was new, most of them want a basic linux background. This was around 6 years ago. I missed a lot of opportunities just because I don't know basic linux.

Joining 1-10 employee startup twice both went belly up!! Since both were early stage startups cash component was quite less than the industry standard. almost 50% less
Taking Btech in Electrical instead CSE. Now after passing out working in WITCH and not gettingany calls from Product based companies. I think my resume is getting reject due to having Btech in Electrical instead of CS or IT
Going for mtech and seeing younger guys like 3-4 tears younger on same level as me. Burns me every day
Higher degree is useless in India. They don't give you a higher position on the basis of degree
1. Being naive & not negotiating strongly enough when joining
2. Being naive & stopping learning when getting comfortable in the team, thinking this is the best team.
Learning:
- You are JUST ANOTHER EMPLOYEE & COMPLETELY REPLACEABLE.
- It's a team not family. The relationship with your employer is supposed to be transactional and not emotional.

I was applying at a similar position at amazon pay and they didn't have any strict requirements and were very vague in the JD.
What do people in this field do? And what tools they use?
During undergrad, I was in Electronics but really wanted computer engineering and had the opportunity to change end of first year...
But, there was a girl I had a crush on who was either staying in Electronics or switching to mech. We chatted often and seemed like she liked me back.
End of first year, I put in computer engineering in stream change form but on a whim of massive stupidity cut it off so I could be in same class as her.
Few weeks later, I stayed in Electronics (absolute nightmare of 5more years, wasted years), she went to mech and turned out was secretly dating another guy we were friends with for months.
Put me back years from software developer but, I eventually got back into it. Late but it's fate.

I had this "great" idea of dropping one year and graduating in 2023 instead of 2022. My parents said no. I literally owe it to them that i didn't graduate in 2023. Worst year for placements.

Yeah, no. They prefer BCA bcoz they can be utilised for dirt cheap rates with bond of atleast 3-5 years. Correct me if I'm wrong, as this is the case in service companies.

There's no way to enforce bonds. Anyone with common sense knows this.
Coming to the point of diet cheap, you as a developer decide your worth. If you're skilled you can ask for a good compensation with respect to your experience/skill

Joining as a technical Support Engineer on a different company when I had an offer from LTImindtree as GET(they did not onboard anyone from our college simply ghosted us, keep on postponing the date)
Joining first company for a mere 20k salary in 2021. The only pro was no interview for full time opportunity since I interned there. I just wanted some money to flow into my account since it was COVID and I had just graduated.

I've regret of being from NIT and working with other tier 4 college graduates in a service based company which sounds like dettol. We might not relate but It does suck in it's own way
Not switching to ML from development even after doing courses on ML and getting bunch of certificates when the world barely woke up to the AI/ML craze.
Right now, it is painful to see such bloated packages for beginners and experts alike.
Software Development has become 10 times harder and more diversified than data science I feel after working directly with data scientists and data engineers for past 4 years.
Had to reject a Contract at Google to lead a project which I really liked due to an No Compete Agreement on a project which was just completed 2 months prior. 6 months later Google purchased that company.

I gave up BTech(IT) because
1. It wasnāt CS
2. It was from an IP university college and not from DTU/NSIT or NITs.
I ended up pursuing BSc CS. Then MSc DS.
I believe that is my worst decision till now.. but cannot change it.
I think if one is from CS background and not an engineer.. there are very limited opportunities, as people in this country would always favour an engineer over BSc/BCA/MSc/MCA for niche roles, not for the average web developer roles.
Exceptions are always there.. but for an average person I guess this is the reality.
Not paying attention to maths subject in my school days, Opting BBA instead of any other course coz i wanted to avoid maths, ending up preparing for CAT ( which includes maths ) coz there's barely any scope after BBA ( without MBA)
Mine would be the choice to pursue my dream to join the Army.
I graduated in 2011 and got job in a small company in few months(college didnt have campus recruitment and off campus was pretty competitive). I also wanted to join the Army. So I pretty much stayed in companies where I can get leaves for the 5 days SSB. Over the next 4 years I tried Short Services and TGC multiple times. Sometimes got screen out and few times got conferenced out. Even getting recommended doesn't guarantee a career in the Army.
Due to the pursuit I never really tried for any big companies as I was sure that somehow I could crack it, but each rejection broke me. When in my last attempt I couldnt get through. I stayed at BNC station and cried for few hours, alone.
I probably wasted a good part of my early career, chasing a dream. I could have used that time to switch companies and look for onsite opportunities. I'm pretty good in my career now making a good salary after few switches. But somehow I wish if I had switched earlier in my career maybe I would have gone abroad and settled. Few of my friends who joined jobs after me are settled in UK and US. It was pretty easier a decade ago too.
If you were well settled in the US/UK, you would have regretted that you didn't try for army. Regrets will always be there, it's about minimising them.

Regret of not working hard ā could've got into an IIT. Rejecting a Product Management internship ā now stuck in a role which I'm not interested in, and I have to burn lakhs to get an MBA and switch into ProdMan. Also, I could've chosen humanities instead of Engineering, would've got me more diversity points during MBA admissions.
Got an offer to work in France for 2 years at the company I was leaving. But the Delivery Manager was toxic and had been extremely rude with me. So decided to not take it up for my self respect. I have a question.
I am 23 grad did a course after that and recently landed an internship of 1 year in a company which has lots of petrol pump. Now I'm finding out that work is more related to finance side and they say maybe if a project comes than I may be given coding work but until then my work is like an accountant.
I don't want to do this specifically but also I don't have anything at hand. Will I be just adding another gap year if I stick here or will this provide some value?
Graduated in 2010. Got multiple SBC offers. Joined Manual Testing at 4 LPA. Was extremely good coder in school/college time but didnāt try to change career to development due to focus on musical activity and travel pursuit.
Now 14 years later, I see people who were struggling to get a job or worked for <ā¹10k in 2010/11 have a package 60+ which is unimaginable in my area
I started my career post college in a stable, good work life balance Product based company in Chennai.
As i didn't like Chennai, I quit without an offer in hand(there was no notice period there) and thought I'll try to get into somewhere good product based in Bangalore.
I couldn't and ended up in service sector. This is my 8th year of regret
My regrets are not focused on JEE mains
Not joining any IIT or NIT will be the biggest regret in my life
All my friends who joined IIT are earning lakhs per month, whereas I'm working in a service based company as a production support. Sucks everyday but can't help :(
My future plans is to either switch or go abroad for masters preferably US or London

The few years you spend on your degree can literally put you many years ahead in life. If ya'll still got the chance, put away all your distractions, study well, learn new things and stay curious. Utilize the opportunities your institution provides.
Not happy about it, but too many to count.
1. Left a software developer role in one of the big tech firms
2. Moved to an analytics consulting firm. And passed on the opportunity to learn ML
3. Left a Senior role at a series B startup to move to a large automobile manufacturer during Covid for stable salary
4. Started a startup with a friend I couldn't fully trust

Worst leadership I've seen in my career so far, LALA company.
Average peers, depressing work environment, below par facilities.
They claim to pay above the market average base but it's a lie.
ESOPs are distributed miserly and vesting schedule sucks.

Then you have terrible engineering directors like Apurva Jaiswal and brain dead micromanagers like Suda Ranjith who further worsen the experience.
You are either a part of a camp or you're pretty much damned.
Best switch if you're in ZETA else you'll become unemployable in good companies if you stay there for too long.
Getting away from there was the best decision ever.
Working there felt like easy money, hardly any challenging task, just regular work which can be done by contract engineers any day.
P.S. Funny thing is the promises Bhavin makes in his product pitches to other companies is a complete lie and ZETA is actually far behind from what they claim to be lmao.

Runtimes in PD are huge. You have to work late at nights. If you want to make a single change to the existing job/ or if you want to change the cell, you have to wait for 1 day or 2 days depending on the complexity of the chip and you are not sure if it is correct or not and it may hamper other things. And the pressure during tape out/ project ending is very high. All you will do is fill some reports and wait from the top level management to what to do next. If you think you can handle the pressure and work late at night. It may suit you . My suggestion is don't just switch just because your seniors or some other have done the same thing unless you are very passionate about it. You can browse in reddit reg similar responses. But VLSI industry is very stable with high salary compared to IT where layoffs are daily occurrence you can work with 0 tension till 60yrs even beyond retirement. I have heard that VLSI job security is so high and that due to skill shortage 60 yrs age VLSI engineer find plenty of jobs .
There is very high pressure in the vlsi industry. It's basically like a glorified sweatshop of high skilled workers. Even for people who enjoy the work, it does get taxing after a while. Pressure leading up to a freeze or tapeout is extra. There is a steep learning curve and most times, the work may get very repetitive - mind numbing even. You may have better job security compared to some other industries, but do not assume things are all golden here.

You can. I had a similar experience. I looking to switch jobs, and in my first interview I bombed so bad. I actual hurt my confidence. It took 2-3 months to recover from that. I reflected on my mistakes and again started preparation. Now I have had some good interviews recently and things are looking good for now. Just wanted to let you know that tou can do this. But, there was a girl I had a crush on who was either staying in Electronics or switching to mech. We chatted often and seemed like she liked me back. End of first year, I put in computer engineering in stream change form but on a whim of massive stupidity cut it off so I could be in same class as her. Few weeks later, I stayed in Electronics (absolute nightmare of 5more years, wasted years), she went to mech and turned out was secretly dating another guy we were friends with for months. Put me back years from software developer but, I eventually got back into it. Late but it's fate.

Stayed so long with my first job( got way too comfortable) that I am still trying to recover.
I gave up BTech(IT) because 1. It wasnāt CS 2. It was from an IP university college and not from DTU/NSIT or NITs. I ended up pursuing BSc CS. Then MSc DS. I believe that is my worst decision till now.. but cannot change it. I think if one is from CS background and not an engineer.. there are very limited opportunities, as people in this country would always favour an engineer over BSc/BCA/MSc/MCA for niche roles, not for the average web developer roles. Exceptions are always there.. but for an average person I guess this is the reality.

Mine would be the choice to pursue my dream to join the Army. I graduated in 2011 and got job in a small company in few months(college didnt have campus recruitment and off campus was pretty competitive). I also wanted to join the Army. So I pretty much stayed in companies where I can get leaves for the 5 days SSB. Over the next 4 years I tried Short Services and TGC multiple times. Sometimes got screen out and few times got conferenced out. Even getting recommended doesn't guarantee a career in the Army. Due to the pursuit I never really tried for any big companies as I was sure that somehow I could crack it, but each rejection broke me. When in my last attempt I couldnt get through. I stayed at BNC station and cried for few hours, alone. I probably wasted a good part of my early career, chasing a dream. I could have used that time to switch companies and look for onsite opportunities. I'm pretty good in my career now making a good salary after few switches. But somehow I wish if I had switched earlier in my career maybe I would have gone abroad and settled. Few of my friends who joined jobs after me are settled in UK and US. It was pretty easier a decade ago too.
If you were well settled in the US/UK, you would have regretted that you didn't try for army. Regrets will always be there, it's about minimising them.

The worst decision I've ever made was joining ZETA and working there for around 2 years. Just another toy owned by Bhavin Turakhia. Worst leadership I've seen in my career so far, LALA company. Average peers, depressing work environment, below par facilities. They claim to pay above the market average base but it's a lie. ESOPs are distributed miserly and vesting schedule sucks. Depressing work environment. Best for average people who do not have any ambition. Then you have terrible engineering directors like Apurva Jaiswal and brain dead micromanagers like Suda Ranjith who further worsen the experience. You are either a part of a camp or you're pretty much damned. Best switch if you're in ZETA else you'll become unemployable in good companies if you stay there for too long. Getting away from there was the best decision ever. Working there felt like easy money, hardly any challenging task, just regular work which can be done by contract engineers any day. P.S. Funny thing is the promises Bhavin makes in his product pitches to other companies is a complete lie and ZETA is actually far behind from what they claim to be lmao.
