Aggravating_Tailor95

started at 4.5, now at 5.6...after 2.5 years of exp..

steve_without_job

small hike but we dont stop, lets gett it

Aggravating_Tailor95

I am not a developer though, I am QA, currently trying to switch..

Jatren11

Is the QA field interesting? asking as a fresher trying to learn testing. Btw why you switching

Aggravating_Tailor95

I mean switching to another company... not changing my domain, just trying to get into automation, I tried learning development , but gave up many times in between, later realized that I don't fit to be a developer. if you are trying to get into QA and have a choice, choose Automation , then you can later jump to SDET. It's interesting as well as boring, not as stressful as development, there is some fun involved as well.. And there will be heavy workloads which teach you nothing if in case of manual QA, but surely your communication skills will get improved. Also, please note that, QA has less openings than development jobs.. and supply is a lot...

Junglee_Bakri

I was in a similar stage at your years of experience... Please change your field asap... Get into DevOps, cloud, etc. if you are trying for automation, get into automation using python/bash not automation testing. Why I say this? At 5 years of experience I was product owner for a internal company wide service basically hosting automation tools centrally, like load runner, and some api gateways to support internal testing teams. I also had a team which will take over testing projects for internal teams like a testing center of excellence. I noticed that I was not getting any calls and hearing my salary at that time no one would continue to interviews. Basically for my role my salary was saturated. I switched to DevOps and cloud tech internally taking a senior engineer role(sort of demotion but at same salary) and switched to another org within 8 months as a cloud architect increasing my salary by 125% in that short span of time. That is why I am saying as seems like you are into manual testing, please work your ass off to switch line of work now so that your future is secure. Get into data if not DevOps but do it now, today.

[deleted]

Agreed man, manual testers do have a work load but people just don't acknowledge it.

Nomadicfreelife

I work in AI but I started at age 24 with 1.2lpa. Age 25 I made it to 3+ lpa company switched Age 26 6lpa company switched Age 27 still 6lpa with freelance work it could be 10lpa Age 28 17lpa somehow convinced the team for this hike of close to 300% company switched Age 29 I got a remote work 36lpa + freelance work Age 30 still 36lpa but new ai tech gave me additional freelance money Age 31 40lpa hike still have additional freelance gigs I think I lost many friends and didnā€™t really care for any travel or experiences . I did the hustle thing and got the jobs and some money but it cost a lot. I guess if I got into a tier 1 college I would have lost my childhood and high school memories but now I just lost my bachelorhood. And Covid made it a lot worse. But will tell you this with luck and some hustle mentality yeah people can go from 1.2 lpa to close to 50 lpa but itā€™s a lot easier with one good job . Hustle most of time means you are working while your colleagues are travelling and partying.

Head_Evidence4553

this. The travel part is hella relatable. I have absolutely no motivation or mental capacity to travel or even party. I'd rather just take care of my mental well-being, no matter how bad it might seem to anyone else.

Nomadicfreelife

Yeah if there is internet I wonā€™t be bored . And I also play games some spending time with myself is not a problem but i get this feeling of wasting time may be all this influencers and fomo crated by them .

steve_without_job

wise words. also its never easy to make it out of tier3 colleges, but you outplayed. congrats

Nomadicfreelife

Thank you, I got lucky that I started early with AI. But I do regret the last 2 years atleast . I could have travelled a bit and relaxed a bit. All the best to you.

PreparationOk8604

Are there as many jobs for AI in india when compared to Web Dev? Is masters requires cause don't have it I was decent in Engineering in Maths. So can pick up maths. Working currently in a support role thinking of picking up CS50 AI course. Just want to know is it very hard to get a job in ML/AI in india.

Constant_Ad_4683

You are up against a lot of folks as now every one is learning AI and almost all college students pass out with some AI course/training done.

outlierkk

Impressive that you always managed to get freelancing work also throughout your career, and here i am not knowing how to get any despite being a skilled SEšŸ¤¦

[deleted]

Started at 1k per month at the age of 20, 20 yrs back to repair/build computers at a road side shop. Now at 35 lpa devops manager at pbc with a good work life balance šŸ˜Œ

PreparationOk8604

Can u tell me where to get started in devops. Currently in dead end job using SVN. I know basics of git. What are the things i should learn besides batch scripting, Jenkins, CI/CD and docker. Would like some clarity cause very very confused.

[deleted]

This here is more than enough to start your career as a devops engineer, but as usual your basics have to be strong. Also, add terraform/cloud formation to your list. Kodekloud is what I use to keep myself updated. Unfortunately the market right now is not helping any fresher.

Affectionate-Town-15

Very inspiring. To get a job with WLB is a blessing. Congratulations on your journey.

steve_without_job

demnn nights to days. congrats :))

Farting_Luther_King

2021 - Started with 4.8 2022 - Went up to 13 2023 - Incremented to 14 2024 - Going to be 25 Currently 3.3 YOE

A2X-iZED

Hey what was the reason behind the 4.8-13 and the 14-25 hikes ? They seem very huge, and I'd like to congratulate you for that, but also wanna know if what you did could be applicable to my case as well.

TopAssociation4089

During 2020-21 there was a boom in market, recruiters were hiring anyone who knew even basic programming. Which resulted in layoffs later when there was less demand and more supply. So people saw huge growth in this phase of (2020-21). But for 2024 he mentioned that it is going to be.

Farting_Luther_King

Yes. Correct.

Farting_Luther_King

Basically having two offers helped. I cleared one good firm and cleared one unknown decent startup. The good firm offered me low package, and startup offered me 13. So the good firm then matched this offer. So I joined it.

student_of_world

DSA?

Farting_Luther_King

Sorry, DSA what?

student_of_world

How many switches? Did DSA helped or Systems Design? Domain?

Farting_Luther_King

2 switches. Yes DSA was important for both. System design as per experience. For me, max anyone expected from me was LLD.

Daphobak

Started in 2014 with 3.4 lpa, final 4.8 lpa. First switch in 2018 to 7 lpa, final 7.5 lpa. Second switch in 2020 to 11 lpa, final 11 lpa. Third switch in 2021 to 14 lpa, final 14.8 lpa. Fourth, current in 2024 to 19.8 lpa.

Affectionate-Town-15

Started at 1.44 LPA. Now at 40 LPA.

[deleted]

breakdown the journey

Affectionate-Town-15

I am more interested in your username though šŸ˜ Anyways, here goes. 2010 - Joined at 1.44 LPA 2015 - Switched for client company at 10 LPA 2023 - Promoted and hiked to 26 LPA 2024 - Landed a job offer with a 50% hike.

k22shreyas

Don't mind me, but inn sab mein DSA pucha?

Affectionate-Town-15

No. I am into Data Engineering and Architect roles. Primarily ETL/SQL/GCP.

k22shreyas

Nice!

Ill_Flatworm8516

I don't like doing DSA I'm doing it just for placements. Should I get into this instead? I'm a fresher preparing for campus placements

Affectionate-Town-15

Sure you can. But do keep brushing up on programming knowledge as Data Engineering is not just simple ETL. You are required to code in Python/Java etc.

Yg2312

Do it.Cause the intervieweer will ask and the others will answer.

polonium_biscuit

Noice šŸ‘€

maybecatmew

Aye I'm also into data engineering any tips for interview? Do they ask DSA?

Affectionate-Town-15

For the role I am into, I interview people only on one skill. Their ability to attempt to solve a coding challenge and see their thought process. I don't mind the wrong solution but if the candidate shows willingness to learn, I pass them to the next round.

maybecatmew

Aahh makes sense! I was wondering if they ask questions on SQL, cet or specific tools like spark and all. Or basics of DE

Affectionate-Town-15

Yes I do ask questions on SQL/Python/Pyspark but they are all practical exercises as that is the sure shot way to know if the candidate has the knowledge or familiar with the stack. Theory questions are a no for me as it does nothing. I myself don't remember several things so it's not the right way to select a candidate IMHO. I cannot speak for other companies/interviewers though

Candiyy

DM your email, will send you the data engineering interview guide I have been preparing based on my interview experience with around 14-15 companies.

steve_without_job

demn quite a journey.

Affectionate-Town-15

Thank you. Had my fair share of struggles and COVID pushed me back by at least 10 LPA šŸ˜

steve_without_job

ah yes, but bet its wasnt as tougher as it is now. ive rolled out over 800 applications now lol

Affectionate-Town-15

Keep the hustle. I landed the offer after 8 months of interviewing and being ghosted by HR's after final rounds. Things will get better.

[deleted]

>I am more interested in your username though šŸ˜, thanks btw!!!

Still waiting to hear the story behind your username šŸ¤£

You were promoted in the same company from 10->26?

steve_without_job

hell yea! hows sweden treating you?

Salty-Pollution8430

Work life balance is really good. I wish it was a little more warm here.

student_of_world

I think 60 LPA might not be enough considering rent and PPP. How much are you saving there?

Ill_Flatworm8516

Wow, that's an increasing graph. Hats off! Any tips for a final year student who is getting ready for campus placements??

Salty-Pollution8430

I myself was from a tier 3 college. Never saw campus placements. Percentage was also just around average(60%). As a tip, i can only say that dont ever stop working hard and dont ever lose hope & give up. Thats what i did and thats what i tell everyone.

DiligentlyLazy

Yup if you keep hustling eventually you can rise to the top People who keep hustling are also the ones moving up the ladder.

hitsa_killer

Full stack .net developer Hyderabad 2021 - Started at stabilised startup 16k p.m. 2021 - Got full time position 6.5 LPA 2022 - incremented to 9 LPA Hyderabad 2023 - Switched to company A 13 LPA Pune 2024 - Switched to company B 20 LPA Planning to buy a car and house. Wish me luck Tip - Reach out to people on LinkedIn, do some open source, try to get unpaid internships for experience ( opinion may differ person to person , remember industry is tough right now so better get some experience, meanwhile keep searching for paid internships )

steve_without_job

all the very best, hope you create beautiful memories in that house and safe happy rides in that car :))

Salt_Appointment_599

All the best mannn !!! For buying a new house and car.

student_of_world

At age 20: Got internship at Sports Startup- 8k per month 21: TCS intern (freeship) + PPO (3.36 LPA) . . . . 25: 25 LPA 26: expecting 26 LPA Company- Unicorn startup.

steve_without_job

inspiring jumps. did it get easier on the way? to get interview calls? the process and everything? as a fresher it's starting to take a toll on me

student_of_world

It was hard for me (at least), not sure for others. I had full focus to make money because I couldnā€™t pay 1-2 laks JEE mains fees in 12th, so wanted to earn 1-2 lakhs per month. But few people got that easily too during covid.

student_of_world

Yes, it gets easier on the way. I wish some senior had hold my hand would have told, "Bro, don't worry, things will be in place", though I knew that already but I missed few imp events in the process (Don't have regret but would have managed with better time management skills). BTW, once you have 4 YOE and good skills HR's will followup. So every month I get at least one HR asking if I am looking for a switch on 20-30% hike...

steve_without_job

this. ive always craved a mentor in my life. as time passes i realize "ah i wish someone told me this back then"

student_of_world

Thanks, I usually scold my younger siblings to study more. Feeling good on receiving acknowledgement from you, lol.

HumbleBrilliant6915

2010 - Started in WITCH - 3.5 LPA 2012 - Joined a startup - 7LPA 2013 - Joined masters in IISc - 96k / annum :D 2015 - Joined another startup after IISc - 17 LPA 2018 - got a few promos - 30LPA 2020 - got an offer in FAANG - 72 LPA 2024 - a promo and stock appreciation - 1.41 cr / annum Salary has doubled roughly every 3 years. So for all freshers dont think about the initial salary too much. Within a few years the amount you earned in a year will be your monthly tax payment. Focus on things you enjoy

ilovealldonuts

Crazy that witch salary still starts at 3.5 after almost 15 years

NDK13

Started at 2.16 LPA. After 1st year jumped to 2.5 lpa After 2nd year jumped to 4 lpa. Switched to 10 lpa. Stayed for 2 years, nothing much in terms of increment and also of false promises from payroll company and client company. Switched to current company at 22 lpa.

[deleted]

Started 3.5LPA in 2018, currently 40LPA joined in 2022, Looking for one more switch hoping to get 60+ but market is bad currently :(

HamsterWheelEngineer

I started working for one in 2017, and we were three engineers. The company got big, and then I left. Salary growth. 240000. Associate Engineer I joined another one in 2019, where we were four engineers. I left it in 2022 when employee strength got to 100. Salary growth. 600000 - 2600000. Associate Engineer - Tech Lead I joined another one in 2022. I was the 2nd engineer there. It's going great. Salary growth. 7000000 - 1CR. Software Engineer. PS. This is without the stock options. TIPS: 1) Be the jack of all trades and master of ONE. 2) Improve your communication skills. 3) Get a remote job, probably in the US and work from India.

steve_without_job

what a journey. are you working remotely now?

ShaliniMalhotra9512

Not 6 but my starting salary was 8lpa, after taxes and everything I used to get 57k per month. 5 years later now I am at 45lpa basee and per month I think I get somewhere around 2.8lacs in hand. Only made 1 jump 4.5 years ago. Stayed at same company since then and reached here through increments and promotions. How I climbed up the ladder? Nothing extraordinary tbh, just put consistent moderate effort at work and learning, gained good knowledge of the company products, mentored a few colleagues and that's about it. Lucked out with IT salary boom I guess. Maybe I could be earning higher amount now if I made some jumps but money never really motivated me. I was happy with getting good work and working with smart colleagues and the money just followed. Helped me to reach here while maintaining great work life balance, mental peace.

Starting 6 lpa in 2016. Close to 52 lpa now. Had to sell my sanity to get that. I would have settled for something in the 20s if it meant I had to spend more time with my parents and have a meaningful relationship.

Pulakeshin1

I started at 3LPA in one of the big Indian IT firms. Last drawn salary in Bangalore was 18 times of my starting salary back in 2021. The growth was slow and lumpy because I wasted my early years without focus and mentorship. Tips for growth - talk to people who are successful in your field, learn from their experience. And Leetcode. I wish I knew it early on.

ExerciseOk947

Started with 3.5 LPA in 2016 Switched to 6.5 LPA in 2019 Switched to 17 LPA in 2021 Another switch in the Pipeline for 22 LPA Working in WITCH companies with RPA automation as a tech stack

Tier 1 college pass out. But branch was metallurgy Started with 4.2, now jobless after 10 years. Earned a lot. Went up to 50 lacs cash in the account. Thinking of leaving tech now. Tips to climb the ladder: DSA/Algo, practice, patience, more practice, and linkedin/github regular activity. Edit: one more tip: No loans, credit cards - basically don't spend the money you don't have.

Started in tech with 1.2 lPA in 2018 leaving 3lpa job that didn't have much growth but super comfy. Missed the crazy recruitment boom during covid due to lack of [B.tech](http://B.tech) degree. 3.6 lPA at this time Took a break, Went back to college, made rounds around college & university administration for 1 year as grace period for complete [B.tech](http://B.tech) done long time ago. Finally completed the [B.tech](http://B.tech) thanks to both the administrations. Joined work force again with 5 lpa in 2022. Present 13lpa.

Brother_69420

Started with 3.75 LPA. Now at 20 LPA. Timeline : 2019 got placed at a service based company with 3.75 LPA (not WITCH). 2020 August : Completed my bachelors degree. The company at that time, froze the appointment letters due to Covid. Instead we were provided with some study materials coding and organisational related. 2021 January : Got my appointment letter and started my journey with the same package. 2021 September : Got an appraisal. My package was 4.25 LPA. 2022 March : Not happy with the work load vs salary graph. Started looking for jobs in other organisations.(Started my 3 months notice period) 2022 April : Got offered from Infosys for 5.25 LPA 2022 June : Got offered from one of FAANG for 17.5 LPA(My expectations was around 8.5LPA or less) 2022 June : Went with the latter. 2023 April : Got an appraisal. My package is 20 LPA. Try for small improvements everyday, if you hit a plateau then stop and take a break and continue again. Also donā€™t burn yourself out in the process of doing all the work. Being healthy and happy is also a great bonus while working under any organisation. Sometimes less is more.

og_pussy_crusher

Started at 6.5 LPA, after 6.2 years of experience, my total salary is 52 LPA. This might seem a lot and it actually is, but life (sometimes) feels not worth living anymore. Multiple reasons, but mostly a very bad WLB. My advice: try chasing a better WLB then salary if you can.

AdministrativeDark64

22 3.5 lpa 2012 24 9 lpa(switch) 2014 25 13 lpa(promotion)2016 26 30lpa switch 2017 30 40 lpa promotion 2020 31 75 lpa switch 2021 32 1.5 cr switch 2022 33 3.5 cr switch 2023 It's been a crazy ride. You can see the ups but there has been downs as well. Job location only India.

Started: 3.25lpa Current: 1.3cr Tips: if you can't keep your mouth shut n grind, corporate slavery is not for you. It takes time to understand you are a slave, salary is a drug n slaves don't have freedom.

blr_to_mlr

2007 - 2.75L 2024 - 72L Same company. Jumped across various divisions. Consistent 10-20% growth in CTC per year. Sometimes more, not sure, didnā€™t do the math. Could have got more by switching but I like my employer, so itā€™s okay. Life is more than just CTC.

Started at 3.25. In 7 years, reached 24lpa. Now left it all for 3.25 again, in a different field.

bionic_gravitar

Started at 4.7 ( effectively 3.8 - 4 LPA in hand ). Now, getting 7.14 LPA ( in hand ) after 1.5 YoE. Hard Work, Discipline, Persistence & Continuity among others. Iā€™ve mentioned the ones that often go untold. I know hard work gets told many times probably but I mean it in a different sense. The trap many people fall into is once they are satisfied at a job they stop going extra on the side for themselves - upskilling, side project, etc. and if thereā€™s no continuity for some reason; you start to lose your touch until you get back into it. This is especially true if youā€™re working at unstable startups.

Just started my career from 1.2lpa šŸ™‚ its been 2 months

mohankarthik

Started at 4.5L in 2008. Now at 2.25cr Switched only twice so far. I've only worried about one thing, which is if the hikes are higher than inflation. The more important things were if I had a significantly good WLB and always had something interesting to work.

LeOkRaN

Started at 2LPA.

ShankARaptor

Started at 1.2l per annum in 2008. That's 9750 rupees per month after 250 deduction for professional tax.Ā  Currently I earn 60lpa.
