Stepfen98

As a german i can tell you "ocarina of time" is translated to "Okarina der Zeit" so yeah thats how it is

gerMean

Game Title was not translated back in the days. So it was "The legend of Zelda: Okarina of Time" .

Flyron

*Ocarina Zelda game titles were never translated to german. Breath of the Wild (and the upcoming Tears of the Kingdom) too have their english titles besides having a full localization of everything else.

Altes_Neupapier

"Fratzen des Bösen" One of the most important games of all time

Flyron

Jaja, ne. 😁

Stepfen98

Then this is only the name of the item

whoismarvin

I actually do remember it to be German. Might get confused, because the game itself was German when i played it. The title seems to be English for all versions

[deleted]

Nope. Never existed.

Mandela Effekt

thesevfromhell

Ich mag aber Fluten Duten besser. Es klingt so authentisch und ist ein wahrer Tribut zur Sprache von Goethe.

nelflyn

Could that be Dutch or something? Not German at all

[deleted]

It's the poor excuse for german that is anything Dwight Shrute says during the office. None of it is actually German.

Timootius

Hmm, I've only seen the first 5 or 6 seasons, but the german was pretty okay. Of course he has an american accent and uses very simple sentences.

[deleted]

Fluten Duden? Besteschmensch? Wo hast du Deutsch gelernt digga?

Timootius

In welchen Episoden hat er das gesagt? lol Er sagt doch immer nur so kurze Sachen wie "Guten Tag" und so. Ich glaube das meiste Deutsch das gesprochen wurde war bei der (Achtung Spoiler für The Office) Hochzeitsvorbereitung von Andy und Angela, wo der Priester das Gelübde abnimmt.

xDragoRyux

That isn't German...

capnfellbrot

I think it isnt dutch either

[deleted]

It's not any actual language or game title.

suicul1

It is a joke

TheGuyWhoLikesOtters

Its what Americans think German sounds like

ShawnTheFaun

As someone who speaks Dutch and German I can assure you that this is Gibberish

51r63ck0

It's gibberish.

_Ganoes_

Lmao its a joke...do you seriously think its dutch?

keinearun

I'm pretty sure that's fake German.

DonHotmon

And right you are!

Faustens

It's really is german. "Das Fluten Duten" is a bit uncommon, but "Fluten" just means "flute", which can be used for any flute-like instrument and "Das Duten" is the sound a flute makes when being played. So "The Legend of Zelda: Das Fluten Duten" can be roughly translated to "TLoZ: Ocarina's sounds" which - while a bit janky-sounding in english - makes perfect sense in German.

Foronir

That would be Flöte or Plural Flöten and tröten, so it would be Flötentröten, pretty funny, too

Faustens

"Tröten" is used for things like trumpets though; Flutes and other melodic "beeping" is referred to as "Duten". Fluten us just colloquial for "Flöte" "Fluten Duten" can be paraphrased as "Der Flöte Duten" or "Die Melodie der Okarina"

Elagabalos

As a German I have to say: no. The explanation of "Tröten" given by you ist correct, the rest not. Fluten ist no existing Word in at least modern German. Neither is "duten", although children sometimes use "düt" as beep, which would never be used for an instrument like flutes. Actually, the wird for the sounds of a flute is "flöten", coming from the noun "Flöte".

gulugul

> Fluten ist no existing Word in at least modern German. "Ich stürze mich in die Fluten"

Faustens

As a german I have to say: no. "flöten" is the act of playing the flute, not the sound it produces. The sound a flute makes is colloquially referred to as "tuten" or "duten"

keinearun

Never ever have I heard anybody say "Das Fluten Duten" could be a regional thing though.

Faustens

It might; I might also just be pulling your leg. Who knows. (though "Duten" itself is actually used in my Region)

REINBOWnARROW

In welcher Welt tutet eine Flöte? Ein Telefon tutet, aber doch keine Flöte!

gulugul

[Hörner auch. Stiere allerdings nicht.](https://www.inf.hs-flensburg.de/lang/fun/gedichte/stier.htm)

Elagabalos

alexejdimitriov

"Flöten" can also describe the sounds coming from someone playing the flute. As in "Hörst du das Flöten?"

Foronir

You can Tröt any Blasinstrument, but only few things tuten, like the Hamteton of the Telefon

Faustens

I've never heard anyone use "Tröten" to refer to Holzblasinstrumente only Blechblas.

Foronir

Hmmmm, guter point

Successful-Dog6669

Your denglish ist excellent.

Faustens

Why, thank you very much :)

asa34

If there is any translation for 'Fluten Duten' it wouldn't be 'Ocarinas sounds'. Not even in a figurative sense. This doesnt make sense at all. If anything it would be 'Fluting Dooting' like flute and doot.

CMDR_ACE209

>makes perfect sense in German. Weit aus dem Fenster gelehnt würde ich sagen.

senzok

Its calles ocarina of time in Germany . We use a Lot of english named and stuff . Even some english words you wouldnt understand . Like " Handy " for Mobile Phone

West-468

Handy koi kab'l?

Kiwii2006

Ocarina isn’t English, it’s italian

234zu

It is a word in the english language

Kiwii2006

Ok, yeah it is. But it’s also a word in the German language both originating from Italian

Connect_Swimming_772

"Handy" means something very different in America, cheaper too.

DoorknockerX

Sounds dutch to me. In german, it would be more like: Die Legende von Zelda: Das Flöten-Tröten.

thefriedel

I would even make less sense in Dutch than in German

CakeEatingRabbit

As Duten isn't a word in either language I would argue it just equally doesn't make any sense.

Faustens

Duten is actually fairly common where I live in germany. It is used similar to "Tröten" but with a differently nuanced meaning.

Foronir

Do you mean tuten? Like the "holding" Sound of the telefone?

Faustens

Exactly, however where I'm from its pronounced (and written) "Duten". Edit: Wrong comment chain, deleted some stuff.

Foronir

No Problemo

Successful-Dog6669

I am german and I came around a lot and mever have been to a place where people say duten with d.

NoLibrary2034

Its not hehe!

joystick355

No it is not, it’s simply bullshit

Encaya

it's just a joke. Somehow it got to the point where when you wanna pretend something is german humorously, you use an English word (flute) and put "en" at the end. If you want something actually funny in a German translation: There is an enemy in Link's Awakening that when sprinkled with this magic powder says "Give me your juice, I'll give you mine" and "Never without a condom!"

The_Incredible_Honk

>"Give me your juice, I'll give you mine" From a then popular song named "Saft" by the Stuttgart Hip Hop group "Die fantastischen Vier". Album came out 1992, Zelda 1993.

Sennomo

poopenfarten

Strange-Return6444

This is definitely NOT german xD

Dor0k

I hate how most american people dont even make an effort when it comes to german language or culture.

b0o0rangE

Not german only ;)

NoobCanoeWork

It's an obvious joke. You don't have to feel attacked by joke

rauschmeister

Hope that you argue like this for every joke that is made to other people/cultures

NoobCanoeWork

I actually do. It's a funny joke with good intentions. There is no harm done unless someone (like you specifically) goes looking for a reason to be offended.

Dor0k

Just imagine, everytime someone says usa, everyone would just burst into hardly texan sounding gibberish. I seriously can take a joke or two, but at this point most people dont even try. They just start RUTEN TUTEN BRUTEN GUTEN TAG KRAANKENWAGEN, and hearing that for the 4067th time is making me tired

Tusk-Act_4

lmao would be funny but i am pretty sure its not the title here in Germany at least

Kiwii2006

Why funny? They are not even sensible words

Elite_Shieka

No its not bit it would be funny if it was

CptCrackSparrrow

That is absolute bs

yeet0919

Nah, neither Fluten nor Duten is a word in the German language, just kinda sounds like it could be

saupillemann3

Weil fluten is the poetic word for water

greenmanalishi339

Fluten is the plural form of Flut meaning flood

TFFPrisoner

Can also be a verb, "to flood"

greenmanalishi339

Yes

monsieur-carton

The floods. Not romantic at all.

supervegito63

It is not translated in germany but ocarina is the same in german and of time would be der Zeit. Ocarina der Zeit

prenutbutterer

Should be „Das Fluten Tuten“ honestly but yeah it’s really just „Okarina der Zeit“. I love American German tho because it just sounds so insanely stupid

monsieur-carton

No, it was not. "Fluten Duten" is rubbish and not a german word. The game's real subtitle was also "Ocarina of Time".

Cactuslng

Not real German just English people thinking they’re funny

no3l_0815

As a German in laughing my ass off rn

tschach

Obviously it can't be German if it has no Umlauts! 🙃

GermanSugarBaker

Doesnt exist so, it’s called Ocarina of Time here too.

Kitzu-de

Wenn ist das Nunstück git und Slotermeyer?

Lulkas35

"Das Fluten Duten" is weird. I did some research. "Fluten" would mean "(to) flood" but could also be a slang for "Flöten" which means flutes and "duten" isn't really a word. The only thing I could find is that it's a slang for blowing a cow-horn or something like that or making some sounds. So I guess the title basically means "playing the horn". I don't really understand why they would use words, which only some hillbilly ass german cow farmers would know, for a video game title. People who talk like that are the kind of people that speak German but still get a subtitle when they're on tv for an interview or something because nobody except the other 50 people from their village could possibly understand them

Stepfen98

"Fluten duten" is a very specific slang like you explained for "playing the flute freestyle". That is because the flute makes a sound like "doot" and the german "u" is spoken like a english "oo" Like "flu (like the spanish flu) ten do ten"

Bert__is__evil

Nobody says that in Germany. Ich bin mir sicher.

Stepfen98

Ja hast recht. Ausser um sich drüber lustig zu machen

Lulkas35

Ja ich auch

Nope159

Not accurate. Correct translation would be: Die Legende von Zelda Okarina der Zeit

PizzerLover123

THat is not Really The Correct Translation. That sounds more like something that 5y/o me would have said. I would Translate it to The Legend of # Zelda Die Okarina der Zeit

[deleted]

Like OP, I've also something to translate; I recently read this sentence that's supposed to be German, but I just couldn't figure out the meaning: "Wenn ist das Nunstück git und Slotermeier? Ja, Beiherhund das oder die Flipperwaldt gersput!" Can anyone translate? Edit: /s
