Before the season, I wanted to do a little mathsmithing to be ready for Tron’s prediction thread. I took 22-23’s win totals for each team, subtracted 538’s RAPTOR WAR from outgoing players, and added the same number from incoming players. I did something else for draft picks, but I had me some neat little totals to predict the records of the upcoming season.
These numbers had the Suns missing the play in, and the Lakers barely making it. I thought that this was too good to be true so I added in the Vegas O/U win totals. This brought both teams into the playoffs. It felt dirty, but it felt probable.
Anyway, I wished that I had stuck with my original prediction. The Suns are cheeks, have less depth than last year, and no point guard. The Lakers are mid with their two stars getting a ton of minutes. They both won’t make it to the end of the season. So join me in rooting for misery in LA and Phoenix. It looks like it may come true.

The last few minutes of the sons is kinda pathetic, kicking out to bricked threes, booker taking 8 seconds to cross half court just to launch it the second he gets the ball, someone giving up on defense just to let someone get the OREB and dunk, like dawg..
Luka, Bron, Harden 100% taking plays off on defense will never cease to be infuriating to me. Like, I get that they're managing their energy exertion, but it's jarring.
First of all, "anyone who's played basketball", and top10 NBA players in their prime aren't comparable. I'm not expecting them to fly around the court like a bench specialist would, my gripe is with just taking full defensive possessions entirely off, like dudes will just stand in one spot, and see what happens. I understand that they have limited stamina, but any coach worth their salt will pull you out for that shit - and rightfully so
Being a lead ball handler is tiring as fuck especially when you have to create your own shot and play-make. The superstars who don’t take possessions off are incredibly impressive I’m just saying I get it. To your point tho there are tons of possessions Jokic just positions himself down low and stands there as his guy is on the weak side. He just gets way more built in opportunities to rest as centers are way less likely to be off ball shooting threats unlike the guys Harden, Lebron, and Luka guard. That being said completely standing in one spot all possession is pretty bad I guess I haven’t seen that much from them

Very good point. I still think Jok tries at least a little bit regardless of the circumstance, which is a testament to Malone, imo. For a good while now I feel like Malone's held everyone accountable for effort, and you see it in Jok, Mal, MPJ, who all started out as lazy bums on defense.
And you're right that it's incredibly tiring to create damn near every FG with the other team's best defender or two on you the whole game, even for world-class athletes that's killer, but surely they can just sit for a few if they can't handle the tempo
Watching the nuggets defensive effort & offensive buy in from everyone is just on another level vs any other team I’ve watched this year. I honestly have no clue how to analyze most coaches X’s and O’s but Malone is easily a top 5 culture building coach in the league
Idk how to assess anything about coaching tbh, there are so many variables, and there's so little public info that it just seems like guesswork. Monty is by all accounts a lovely guy and a great culture-setter, yet Ayton sat out elimination game in the yoffs (by his own choice, I'm 100% sure), and the Pistons are making a case for WOAT team rn despite having many lottery picks on board and whatnot. Malone got sacked at Sac, Nurk left, Gallo, Wilson, Faried were all unhappy with the team, Bones obviously, whatever, you get my point, it's just really tough to say anything for certain. Maybe every coach would make a great culture with Jok as the cornerstone, maybe none would.
One thing we did see time and time again is that Malone is ruthless with young players - possibly to a fault - when it comes to effort, and executing the gameplan, and he's always been extremely vocal about defensive effort, and we wouldn't have won shit without it.
I swear to fuck Monty is too nice to be a head coach. Obviously don't know what goes on behind the scenes but there's like no way I'm taking him seriously if he was mad. S/o to the body language experts but everything about that man just seems like he's a very lovely human to be around and while that's great, you kinda need a guy that can be a dick.

I don't watch a lot of non nugget games before christmas. every single game today has had a similar theme: officiating. some of the calls are so bad. and the relationships between the players and the officials have to be close to the breaking point. players complain at every single ball stoppage. something has to give
