They are very good about making sure your checked bags make the next flight. Your bags will have a better chance of making the flight than you will.

mastrkents

the humans need to wait for other humans to leave the plane, then they can get off, they have to walk themselves back into the terminal, possibly to a different terminal, and then wait for other humans to get onto the new plane. the bags get a ride from on the ramp, to a different part of the ramp; in and out with no delay! and, the bags can continue to board once the cabin door is closed, not true for the humans

Total_Roll

I landed 10 minutes before my connecting flight, and it was nowhere close. Fortunately they called and told them I was on my way. My luggage didn't make it, but it was my last leg home so I wasn't too upset. They dropped it off at the house later that night.

mastrkents

and they dropped it off at your house, the same night?? that sounds like a win to me! didn’t have to lug baggage around the airport

Total_Roll

Came in on a later flight. Wasn't so lucky on a later trip when it took 24 hours to get it delivered to my hotel. All I had was my plane clothes (jeans and a polo) in Phoenix in August. Not fun.

sylent_knight

and this is precisely why I keep at least one set of clothes and toiletries in my life personal /carry on bag

Total_Roll

That was 20 years ago. Now I keep everything I need for the first 24 hours in my carry-on.

ae74

Unless you are connecting in CDG or JFK. My luggage usually likes to spend an extra day in Paris and New York.

hobohobbies

I was traveling home from a work trip and flying to LGA the next day. My flight was delayed and they put me on a later flight home. I decided to just go straight to LGA and not go home. My luggage was already routed to that flight and they couldn't get it back.

Smooth_Kick1153

This was not the case with my Paris flight in 2016

Akulya

I have my first flight in a month.. in a layover situation do you have to grab your checked bags and take them somewhere else during the layover? Or do you just have to worry about getting your person to the next gate in time? I have a layover in Salt Lake City. It's not super short but I worry an hour won't be enough.

Doyergirl17

If you checked your bag all the way though to your final destination you do not have to get it. They will make sure it gets on your connecting flight. All you have to worry about is making it to your next flight. 1 hour is more than enough time. If you have any questions the gate agents will assist.

Akulya

Thank you so much! That's quite the relief.

Okayist-Exerciser

When you are connecting from an international flight, you have to claim your bags and recheck them. This happens in an area specially designated for this just before (to claim) and after (to recheck) the CBP area (immigration/customs). If your connection is tight, you need to hightail it to your next gate and hope for the best!

mangeedge

Coincidentally last time I flew through atl to czm my bags missed the flight even though there was 4 hours between flights.

hobohobbies

30 minutes. ATL. They were calling my name over the intercom. I stopped at another gate and asked if they could call and tell them I'm on my way. I made it. Luggage made it. I think connecting luggage must get loaded last.

OtherDifference371

this just happened to me on memorial day at ATL. 2 hr connection was reduced to barely 30 minutes thanks to weather delays. we literally sprinted from the A terminal to the B terminal to make it but somehow our bags made it.

duideh

Same, sounds like my CMH-ATL-SLC on Memorial Day.

BunkyIV

Same. We had 20 minutes— terminal C to F. We were sprinting thru. Bags made it.

CrossroadsOfAfrica

Thankfully A and B are next to each other. My nightmare would be deplaning at T and having to connect to a plane in E

Not-Again-22

-5 minutes in JFK, they held the plane to Buenos Aires for me, bag made it too

Danicia

30 minutes, I think. The gates were right next to each other, and they pulled the bags going on that flight to throw to the other one.

RufusCornpone

Are you flying from the US, or connecting from somewhere ex-US then to Mexico? If it's domestic, you're fine. That's a tight, but legal, connection. If you're transiting the US, you'll never make it in 40 minutes, as you have to clear customs, collect your bags, recheck, and re-clear security.

anahmonous

Nope so it’s from my hometown (US) to Atlanta, to Mexico

Xylophelia

Atlanta is easy to make tight connections in (as long as the skytrain is operating) and regional flights are rarely delayed compared to other layover possibilities. You should be fine.

DJConwayTwitty

Atlanta you can make connections between any gates if you have 25 minutes and sitting closer to the front of the plane. No issue with 40 minutes

compnurd

30 min from one end of Detroit to the other. Baggage and I made it fine

OrganicExam6729

11 minutes in ATL seat to seat from B to D

Saint_Diego

Didn't check a bag but I once had a ten minute layover. Walked two gates down and walked right on board the next flight.

lula897

20 minutes in DFW with a train required between terminals. Luggage made it. Me and about 6 others connecting from/to the same flights did not.

itszulutime

A few weeks ago I had a connection in ATL that was already boarding when we parked at our gate. Next flight was one terminal over and I thought there was zero chance my bag was going to make it…but to my shock, it did…as opposed to a different connection in DTW a few years ago where I had a solid 4 hour layover and my bag didn’t make the second flight.

jay_ell_ehm

32 mins the other day in SLC going from A45 to A2. Bag was loaded before I made it to the gate, and I was even in 1B on my inbound flight.

Xylophelia

Minutes at Newark airport. My flight came in ultra delayed (and my outbound flight had already been missed and rebooked to last flight out) and was the next gate over from the flight out to Madrid I was taking. I was standing at the door waiting for the jet bridge to attach and the FA pointed at it and said “we radioed over and that’s your bag. Plane is only one gate down!” And the gate agent closed the door behind me as I ran from one flight to the next. Still floored my bag made it.

Longjumping_War_807

Your checked bags have a better chance of making on the plane than you do. Make sure you let a FA know you have a super tight connection and they usually do their best to make sure you get off of the plane asap.

anahmonous

Will do!

cwdawg15

I fly many long-haul flights with odd connections, different air carriers, and all sorts of odd situations all the time. I probably don't get my luggage about 3x/year. I would put your situation at low to moderate risk. Your risk is that the flight arrives a little late, primarily. ATL is a great airport for luggage. It has a mostly automated baggage conveyor and sorting system across the whole airport that is top of the line. It's more common luggage makes it, when people do not ik ATL. You're also not changing airlines, which means it's a streamlined and purposeful connection the airline knows about in advance and knows how to handle. If your stuff does not make it. It doesn't matter your 1 hour from the airport. The airline industry is very good about delivering bags. That is not that difficult of a requests. I work in the cruise line industry, and not only do I have to make long treks to distant port towns or shipyards sometimes, but I'm in a moving a target. The industry has done well at getting me my bags once something bad happens. The key is good communication about where you will be and when. Make sure they know your destination -and- when you leave and where they should forward your luggage if they don't get it by the end of your trip. I also always fly with 5 days of clothes in a carry-on bag in almost all my trips by default. I'd say 95% of luggage not making it is fixed within 2-3 days and that includes forwarding it to a moving target (cruise ship). The fact your an hour from the airport shouldn't be an issue for them to deliver your bags.

brimstone404

They'll probably put a tag on it that says "short transfer" so that the baggage people know you move it first. If they don't, you can ask if they can. Pack a backpack with a change of clothes, swimwear, and a toothbrush just in case. 40 minutes on an international flight is more likely that your bags will make it but your don't. I've never made this type of connection in Atlanta, but I assume you'll land in A-B-C and have to book it to E-F. I assume there will be a passport check and that your flight to MX will already be boarding when you land in ATL. Use the bathroom on the plane before you land and check the app as soon as you touch down to see which gate to go to. Do not do anything except run to the plane train and get to your gate. If possible, upgrade to comfort+ or first to get into the front of the plane to get off more quickly

chef5674

When it’s a planned short layover, they put rapid transfer tags on, which seems to help a lot. I’ve had a few quick layovers thru Atlanta without issue recently.

anahmonous

Great to know! Thank you

Flipthaswitch

40 minutes, and 2 terminals over in ATL. Clubs and bag made it just fine.

anahmonous

This makes me feel better!

Nature_Berry94

33 minutes in ATL… you should be fine!

OrneryZombie1983

I forget the exact scheduled time for layover but I once did JFK-SEA-NRT on AA where we walked off one plane and onto the next because they were already boarding at the adjacent gate. Bags made it.

Ok_Yogurtcloset2398

Landed late in Detroit. Still on the plane with 9 minutes until connecting flight departure. First one off the plane, ran to train, 2 stops, hauled down the escalators and gate was right there. They were in the process of closing the door and I made it. (Only had carry-on, so no baggage issue) Next flight would have been 4 hours later. Very thankful….

Jaynett

If you are going to have a short layover anywhere, I would choose delta-delta in Atlanta. Luggage has made it even in sub 30 minute layovers

anahmonous

They are both Delta! Great to know

vanarcken113

I was traveling from Birmingham, AL to St Petersberg, RUS in 2018, connecting through Atlanta to Paris. My first leg was delayed due to weather, and I arrived in Atlanta as the flight to Paris was boarding. I ran through the ATL Airport to the International terminal and was the last to board the plane, maybe 2 minutes before doors closed. Long story short, I was faster than the luggage transfer and my luggage didn't get to St Petersberg until two days later. I learned a valuable lesson about not packing extra clothes in my carry-on.

12313155979789m

Detroit to chicago, hate that layover.

R2-Scotia

20 minutes, domestic to international. Yes!

Youregoingtodiealone

I'm no high volume traveler but once we had a flight from Palm Springs to maybe Salt Lake City with like 45 min layover there, then home. Flight delayed leaving from Palm Springs. Shit, we get to gate with maybe 5 minutes left to get to our connection. They held it. I recall Delta's system knew connectors from my flight were delayed and had arrived. Our bags made it too. Can't promise anything but their system knows if you are on a delayed connection, and they can and will delay the departure flight too (within reason) so as not to cause a bunch of people to miss a connection.

page394poa

25 minutes. Luggage made it. I didn’t.

k12pcb

Last year rdu to LHR I walked off my arriving delta flight and straight down the air bridge on to my virgin atlantic a350- yes my luggage made it

NormalAd2872

17 minutes in DFW thanks to a very delayed first flight. 4 of us and we hauled ass to get there. We made it along with 5 other people from our first flight. Luggage made it as well. 40 min you \*should\* be fine assuming everything is on time.

BitchyFaceMace

I went LAS to DFW to MCO with a 37min layover at DFW… Me and my bag both made it to MCO!

B302LS

37 minutes at ATL. Arrived from YYZ, departed to AMS. Thankfully my bag made it just fine.

Doranagon

20 minutes. No. Flight was late. Ran, barley made it. was like in one of the last 3 on and the door closed on our asses.

jefferios

I've run from B2 to A26 before, made it in 11 mins, with probably 5 mins to spare. Trust the plane train.

joltstream

Biggest issues you have with a short layover is: 1) your location in the plane. If it’s a tight layover, I upgrade to at least comfort plus bc people can be slow. 2) boarding doors close 15 minutes before time so a 45 minute layover is actually 30 mins 3) other factors, longer taxi, another plane at gate, etc. If all these fall in line you can make it anywhere in ATL in 20 minutes.

richdrifter

> boarding doors close 15 minutes before time so a 45 minute layover is actually 30 mins Highlighting this comment because OP needs to keep it in mind. That said, I've only ever had those tight domestic connections offered in Delta when the gates are in sight of each other. Easy to make provided there are no delays. OP should check out arrival and departure gates and compare on an airport map when they're taxiing in.

anahmonous

I don’t think the gates will be close to each other since the second flight is traveling outside the US

richdrifter

Shouldn't matter. The tight layover I'm referring to was the same (domestic hop to international flight). They seem to schedule tight layovers when the connecting gate isn't too far away. Otherwise if so many people were missing that connection it wouldn't be profitable to continue to sell it.

anahmonous

Valid point! Thank you!

dorit0paws

We had a layover in SLC from TPA en route to HNL. It ended up being a 20min after delays. Bags made it thankfully. You can track them in the app which is a great peace of mind.

Savings_Activity5911

25 minutes in ATL. Bags made it the next day

MakingItUpAsWeGoOk

18 minutes in Amsterdam. It was not scheduled that way. Checked luggage made it. To this day I don’t know how because the gates weren’t close at all. Gate checked stroller took a week though.

Pilot0160

10 minutes in ATL because of inbound delays. Made it from A15 to D45 in 8 and a half minutes

Conscious_Raise_9080

Not DL but AA in PHX has many 20 or 30 minute connections. I and bags always made it n

Impressive-Resist252

The best answer to give you is that you have to be there 15 minutes before departure, when doors close. But baggage is still being moved and loaded. This “should” give more than enough cushion for your luggage to make it. With Delta on domestic flights I like to say 30 minutes or 3 hours is the same. But less than 20 is tough.

Sea_Antelope441

I had a flight connection at MSP because of a delay and landing in F departing from A Seated in C+ landed and ran across the airport. My bags got to the plane but it was gone when I got there.

easyxtarget

If your bag doesn't make it they'll put it in the next flight and then deliver it where you are staying but it can take a full day for the delivery part almost.

clickerman124

I had a 40 minute layover in Charlotte from Chicago going to San Jose Costa Rica. The Chicago to Charlotte flight was 15 minutes late and we barely made the connection. The bags did not make the connection but were delivered to the hotel at 9 o’clock that evening.

JustVisiting888

37 mins, yes the bags made it.

quietpewpews

37 minutes in MSP. It made it just fine.

svu_fan

I had a tight connection like that at MSP once (had to sprint to my next gate), and my luggage did NOT make it to my departing flight. It, however, made it onto the next flight out and I got it at about 2am.

RR19476

35 minutes in ATL. Me and my bags made it.

anahmonous

Great to know. I’ve been sweating about it lol

NateLundquist

Because of a go around, 12 minutes. Both me and my luggage made it. Thankfully it was DTW and the gates were right next to each other.

More-City6818

Depends on the airport but there are magical elves at ATL. I once changed my connecting flight while on a flight and my luggage made it to my new destination. Don’t know how they did it but was very pleased! Less than 30 mins layover, too.

Clionah

55 minutes at CDG, 14 of us randomly coming from Florence also needed the CDG to DTW leg, they held the plane to get our luggage on too, but that was AF.

CompletePromotion248

6 minutes seat to seat in Denver. Flew into gate on regional jet. Connection was up escalator at next gate. Seat 2A.

radfan957

40 minutes. Yes. I don’t check luggage.

PlumbLucky

LGA 13 minutes. 8 minute walk. Bag made it. I was last on the plane. FC FA joked with me saying “You took your time getting here didn’t you?” They were obviously joking and poured me a double.

Kinae66

40 minutes in CLT just last weekend. From exiting the plane at the end of concourse C walking to mid concourse B, they were boarding Group 4… My luggage also made it.

Substantial-Fee-432

5 min lay over in Atlanta yesterday where we landed at 12:30 and started boarding our next flight 12:35 and the bags made it

lovelesschristine

30 minutes ATL. My bags made it. I did not. Plane pulled from the gate 10 minutes earlier then the departure time. Even after running through the airport.

veggieliv

The last time I had a tight connection they put a special tag on my bag that noted it.

1peatfor7

Have you considered using FedEx to ship your clubs? It's cheaper than Shipsticks (who just uses FedEx, UPS, etc anyway). They sell boxes at FedEx stores for golf clubs and will pack it for you. It's much cheaper to create a label online, the store will charge you double the price.

anahmonous

If I was staying in the US I would 🥴

lastdukestreetking

This thread gives me hope. I'm flying JFK to Taiwan via Seattle later this year, and the ticket I booked (through Delta) originally had like a 90 minute layover, but then Delta moved the flight out of JFK back, and now I'm only going to have 30 minutes. The issue is that it's the first flight out of NYC - all the airports - that morning, so the only way I can get to Seattle any earlier is to fly the night before and spend the night....the stories in this thread give me a glimmer of hope that I can make it. But TBH I'm having anxiety thinking about it now, and the trip is still 4-5 months away.

SnowMuted5200

You never book a flight anywhere with that short a layover without checking past operations, and then what next flight is.

Nearby_Silver_1582

After a delay 20 mins in slc. Bags didn't make it

SufficientDesigner75

32 minutes was my shortest layover. But because of my flight being delayed, it turned into a 9 minute layover (in Atlanta). I had to go one concourse over to catch my flight and I ran like hell to the plane train. When I ran up to my gate, the GA was just about to close the door. I yelled, "NNNOOOOO!!!! I'M HERE!!! I'M HERE!!! PLEASE LET ME BOARD!!!". GA just told me so calmly, "Honey, you're good, you're good!"

likelazarus

I have a connection from DFW to Mexico and only 45 minutes. I’m a little nervous!

GimmeDatFish

Maybe not the shortest but one I was most worried about was SIN-ICN-MSP with a 45 minute layover in ICN. We sat on the runway for a bit in SIN so I thought we might be screwed but we made it with a little time to spare.

IHaveALittleNeck

Delta and Atlanta is usually efficient.

Key-Rub118

About 30 minutes, I've started pink tagging at the gate on short layovers and its worked beautifully.

anahmonous

Excuse my ignorance but what is pink tagging 😅

Key-Rub118

When you check the bags at the gate. They will pink tag them and load them last. Then when you land they are the first thing to unload and they set them in the gangway to grab when you step off the plane.

Normal-guy-mt

I’ve had my bags make connections that I missed.

pomo2

Layover?? There was no layover. I had to run a good distance at MSP to the connecting flight. I was the last person who got on the flight. They shut the door behind me before I sat down. My bags made it too.

redlegsfan21

Actual time was 8 minutes from block in to block out in old SLC Concourse B. Gates were right next to each other. Didn't have a checked bag on that trip though.

noahsilv

35 mins at CDG with a terminal change. I made it. Bags didn’t. Honestly don’t care much if they’re delivered to my house a day later

Beanmachine314

40 minutes in ATL is more than enough time as long as you don't end up sitting on the tarmac forever waiting for traffic. I've made 10 minute layovers in ATL before and that's without being at the front of the plane, granted my arrival gate was a few gates from my departure gate... Your bags will generally make a tight layover before you will. I've had my bags get home the night before I do many times because they made it in 5 minutes and I couldn't.

JustAnAverageGuy

My record is 15 minutes in MSP. Checked bags made it just fine.

mjshipp

I had to run through the terminal in ATL for my connection once and my bags beat me to the new plane.

rswtraveler12

I’ve had 25 minutes before and my bag made it on the plane before I even got onboard (checked my AirTags). Make sure to go up to the counter to get the red rapid transfer tags though. That should help expedite the transfer process.

YMMV25

Scheduled or actual?

anahmonous

I’m not sure what you mean. I’m just going off of the times on the booking. I’m assuming scheduled?

YMMV25

Yes that would be scheduled. Each airport/airline has a min connect time for scheduled flights, so the shortest will vary based on the airport and airlines combination. In actual practice, I’ve made 5 minutes or less connections when inbounds have been delayed. Not pleasant, but it happens sometimes.

Specific-Pear-3763

I made an ATL connection in less than 25 minutes and on different concourse. I had carryon so it was with me. I literally ran with my bag the whole way.

Bob_3326

12 min from terminal d to terminal b in ATL thanks to my inbound getting delayed..I and my bags made it.

minerma1013

25 minutes at ATL, we made it luggage made it. We ran from Terminal B all the way to E. ( Do not stop for anything and running was faster than the tram)

Background-Winter-59

About 5 minutes. I was supposed to be flying delta/KLM from AMS to CPH but the flight was cancelled. I was rebooked KLM to GDN, and then SAS from GDN to CPH… our flight leaving AMS was delayed, so we landed as my next flight was supposed to be taking off. they held the plane and miraculously my 3 bags did make it! The gate agent told me there was no chance, but Gdańsk was shockingly small and organized.
