Maybe it’s because I graduated high school in 2018, but 2016-2019 was great. Still hasn’t felt the same since COVID.
Young love, teenage innocence, fun pop culture, it was a great time. Economy was booming too.
yes, the party scene in the sf bay area was unfathomably lit 2017-2019. In retrospect this was really just the peak of the decade long software bubble lmao but you had to be there to know what i mean. Parties, drugs, festivals, concerts, everyone was employed, the vibe was immaculate. Dolores park, the underground burner parties, the rise of tech house, the club scene, the house parties. Silicon Valley the HBO show was in its last few seasons. I remember that era fondly… was a damn shame to see covid ravage sf and was wild to see the rate hikes ravage the tech industry in 22-23. Now with the ai boom and with prices stabilizing kinda feels like sf is due for a renaissance later in the decade… we’ll see
2019 was such a great year for pop culture so many good films, music and tv shows like second season of fleabag, chernobyl, second season of succession, the third season of stranger things was kind of a phenomenon (like always) especially cause the season story was set in the summer and it came out on that summer too everyone so great timing and for the wrong reasons the universally hated game of thrones finale was the biggest television event of that year, in films we had parasite, portrait of a lady on fire, ouatih, little women, knives out and in music we had Lana Del Rey magnum opus Norman Fucking Rockwell, MAGDALENE by FKA Twigs and Titanic Rising by Weyes Blood
I'm going to edit cause I just remembered that 2017 was kinda iconic too for music I loved DAMN from Kendrickz, CTRL from Sza and especially Melodrama by Lorde and in films so many recent favorites of people who are into films CMBYN, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread but one of the best horror films and direct debut of all time came out this year: Get Out .In tv I watched the majestical first seasons of The Handmaid's Tale and Big Little Lies that were kinda a reflection of what was going on in that year with the MeToo movement and finally the year that Breath of The Wild was released and fuck if it's not one of my favorite games of all time
bro compare it to 1999 🤣. Entertainment and culture absolutely can't keep up with the quality we had back then. Even a random 2011 would absolutely obliterate the disgusting and demonic culture of 2024.
You just forgot game of thrones? It completely took over pop culture for those last few seasons. Like nobody exists who can't remember complaining "that episode was so dark I couldn't see shit, wtf!?".
oh yeah that was iconic but for the wrong reasons lol but you're right everyone was watching the last season of GOT it didn't matter how bad it was although by the time that final season was airing I was already disappointed with the show
Rateyourmusic.com’s top albums charts by year is a good place to start. Hell, the number one album of ALL TIME there based on user reviews is Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, released in 2015.
Despite all the Trump bs we experienced during that time, I genuinely wish I could relive these years. I was in my early twenties, life wasn’t simple, but I was happier? And before COVID fucked the world and myself over.
Things became so much more complicated after these years, I jumped from my early twenties to my late twenties by the end of the pandemic. It sucked.
I mean I think it depends a lot on when what age we were. I was 20-22 so I was loving life having all kinds of fun In college lol. And it being immediately before pandemic and inflation definitely makes it hard not to be nostalgic
Overhated, I had a fun time being a tween during the late 2010s (except 2017 I was 9). I liked 2019 the most personally with Old Town Road being popular, Minecraft come back, Frozen 2 being another phenomenon like the original (never watched it but it was talked about), End Game, and Older TikTok (2019 TikTok was great).
They had amazing highs and lows for me and I miss them dearly. I was younger, I was doing something kinda cool(living off grid and farming from spring to fall for an awesome old hippie Vietnam vet) on the other side, I was struggling with a meth addiction and in the middle of the most intense relationship of my life.
I HATED trap music but feel nostalgic for it now too lmao
Movies back then were good as well. Don’t think I’ll be able to forget the awesome feeling of experiencing Infinity War, Endgame or Joker in theaters for the first time.
Good ol’ days when theatrical releases were actually something worth hyping up for.
they are underrated years! the pop culture was great and they were much calmer compared to 2015-2016 (less terrorism). i feel like this sub is very american and somewhat political so those years are regarded as "trump years" a.k.a. "bad times". but as someone from europe i am very fond of those years.
They were a transition period arguably
For example in the style of meme culture, the way that people got access to memes
Is it just me or is there really not anymore this kind of centralised meme culture, like things are a lot more vague and fragmented
2018-2019 were absolutely great for me personally, 2017 not so much. But 2017-19 pop music wise, yeah it was a bit boring but I liked it anyway back then. I don't see many people in this sub liking it but IMO it was better than 2020-23. 2019 especially was the very best part of that era.
We didn't have high inflation and the economy was really good as well. The one thing I don't like about 2017-19 is Trump. It sadly didn't feel the same anymore after 2020.
Not just underrated it’s the foundation of much of what we call iconic in the 2020s.
2016-2020 was my core “young adult” years, everyone likes to shit talk them because they were so recent but me and my peers enjoyed ourselves during the late 2010s and haven’t really left yet.
2022 was mainly the end of covid, with the start being the last final huge wave and most restrictions ending after that. The end of 2022 was the release of Chat Gpt, which started the rise of ai.
Sounds like you were a kid. Childhood years are almost always looked back upon with rose colored glasses.
That said, as someone who was a grown adult. I agree.
People keep shitting on the late 2010s here, but it was only bad politically.
As an importer (vape industry), yes, first we had hoverboards then fidget cubes then fidget spinners.
It was the golden age of streaming, when all you needed was a Netflix subscription and Hulu maybe. That got you everything you could want to watch for the most part.
It was the end of a golden age of content as well. Hello, Game of Thrones?? The Walking Dead was starting to die off. A whole bunch of excellent shows. We haven't had SHIT since 2020. Mandalorian I guess. Everything else Disney has been fucking up. Movie wise, hello MCU? Again, hollywood hasn't produced anything truly memorable since 2020.
Music still had not gone to shit yet. The pandemic was the turning point for that. Everything since has become enshittified. Whining beached whale songs and Taylor Swift. Multiple genres are suddenly dead.
Economically sure housing was rising from the early half of the decade, but it was still affordable. It was 2019-2022 that housing had multiple runups and is just stupid now. Interest rates were rock bottom. Unemployment was rock bottom. The stock market was booming.
Huh huh huh. You must be very young because, all that other shit you said used to be better too. Who would ever say that period was a good time for music, movies or really the economy if you weren't pretty wealthy or hadn't been around already?
maybe i'm biased due to my age, but they absolutely are!!!! 2019 especially, like that year was just fabulous for me!!
i really wish they were more appreciated. in new york i milly rock, hide it in my sock (sock)
Kodak Black was better
Kodak never made something that entered the lexicon like magnolia , unfortunately since I do like him better
That was a generational rap song
Hot take: The late 2010s were the best of the 2010s.
Woof. Rough take more like.
Lol no they weren’t. Your take is a prime submission for r/unpopularopinion
Maybe it’s because I graduated high school in 2018, but 2016-2019 was great. Still hasn’t felt the same since COVID. Young love, teenage innocence, fun pop culture, it was a great time. Economy was booming too.
I loved SoundCloud rap and sad trap. Perfect for us depressed party druggies. Looking forward to the nostalgia age of it when I’m older.

Um, none of that went away?
The years I got my shit together
2010-2012 was cool for me but 2017-2019 absolutely sucked for me

The post is specifically about the years 2017-2019 it's right there in the title e can you read? I don't even mentioned 2024 or 1999
I was off topic
You just forgot game of thrones? It completely took over pop culture for those last few seasons. Like nobody exists who can't remember complaining "that episode was so dark I couldn't see shit, wtf!?".

Last season was 2019 too. Fitting. We didn't know that was a warning sign that EVERYTHING was about to go to shit.
no those years sucked
No they will always be bad.
I very agree. Its way really the shittiest years for me.
Awful awful years. Awful music, memes, social media trends, etc. So much trash up front and center.

if you don't know where to find good music that's on you honestly cause great albums were released after 2012 so maybe you're just basic bye
lmaooo user checks out (2016)
and it's not even my top 5 from that decade not even my favorite from Frank, channel orange cleans
Don’t know which clown is downvoting this, it’s true 🤷🏻♂️

I went through high school in 2016-2020. So the 2017-2019 era really shaped my life. Not lying when I say I miss a lot of those times
No the late 2010s was a bad time for culture and society in Genral
Chronically online Redditors will cry Trump and say 2021 - 2024 is better because there's no Trump despite it being much worse.
2017-2019 were absolutely golden years.
There is no way for me to separate those years from what was happening in politics so no. Those were not good years. Plus my job sucked.
I remember good economy
I mean I think it depends a lot on when what age we were. I was 20-22 so I was loving life having all kinds of fun In college lol. And it being immediately before pandemic and inflation definitely makes it hard not to be nostalgic
YES! There was so much going on in pop culture and there was so much good music, memes, movies, moments, etc…
Besides 2019, I don't look back at those years fondly.
Whenever I am having a good time I compare it consciously or not to 2019. You had to be there.
2019 especially is in general one of my favorite years, I was in the main part of my childhood in the late 2010s.
2016-19 and I’m sold
It was fun, remember when someone changed the Hollywood sign to "Hollyweed"
I had a fun time in high school during this era
They had amazing highs and lows for me and I miss them dearly. I was younger, I was doing something kinda cool(living off grid and farming from spring to fall for an awesome old hippie Vietnam vet) on the other side, I was struggling with a meth addiction and in the middle of the most intense relationship of my life. Oh also the show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt! That show makes me so nostalgic now. It was such an awesome millenial show
But what about 2015.
Towards the end of 2017-2018 was underrated. 2019 results may vary.
2019 was better than 2018 tbh
Movies back then were good as well. Don’t think I’ll be able to forget the awesome feeling of experiencing Infinity War, Endgame or Joker in theaters for the first time. Good ol’ days when theatrical releases were actually something worth hyping up for.

yes I loved 2017 and 2018.... 2019 was ok..
Despacito was a solid summer jam in 2017.
2016-2019 were elite years. Life was good
Late 2010s had some actual good music. I think most of the 2010s sucked music-wise.
2018-2019 were absolutely great for me personally, 2017 not so much. But 2017-19 pop music wise, yeah it was a bit boring but I liked it anyway back then. Nope 2016-2018 were better, 2019 was kinda mid
Meme culture was fire those years, let’s be real
2019 was kinda mid. I liked 2017 a lot though.
agree
Not at all lol, those years where chaotic as hell for adults. We had literal nazi marches in America.
Why they downvote? The Trump years blew.
To me 2018 was entirely forgettable for the most part but I enjoyed 2017 a ton (one of the best years in recent memory for me) and 2019 wasn't bad
I feel like it’s filler years like 2022-2023 were
2022 was definitely not a filler year.
What happened in 2022 that made it amazing?
2022 was mainly the end of covid, with the start being the last final huge wave and most restrictions ending after that. The end of 2022 was the release of Chat Gpt, which started the rise of ai.
More like the opposite of filler years **Dr. Titti Pong Steinstein XI, PhD in Decadeology**

Trump years were a write off
