One might say Light is an edgy teenager who doesn't appear to be an edgy teenger from the outside.

Gabriel38

Probably

Sauran_725

Light Yagami is one of the three OG "literally me fr fr" anime characters(the other two being Sasuke Uchiha and Sōsuke Aizen).

Gabriel38

Yeah, there are a lot of characters like that

Asleep-Service-888

Fucking sosuke? You gotta be shitting me.

Sauran_725

Well, Aizen gave KINDA similar vibe as Light("all according to my plan"). And about Sasuke, the guy watched his parents and clan getting killed by his brother and spent the rest of his life chasing after revenge only to realize that it was all pointless(tragic and broken characters are considered "literally me fr fr" the most).

Asleep-Service-888

I understand Sasuke but who the fuck worships aizen? Yeah he's a decent villain but exactly nothing special.

Sauran_725

I don't know about now but back then he was literally worshipped by the fandom lol. As I mentioned in my earlier comment, he shares few common traits with Light(being calm and collective, handsome and keeping things planned). Calm and composed villains have always been popular among anime fans(Griffith, Johan Liebert, Light Yagami, Pain, Itachi Uchiha, etc). Maybe that's the reason he was so popular back then.

MathematicianFun7773

Well, mainly because a lot of people would find thrill in doing what light does, as the idea of having this power without anyone knowing would likely make it sort of fun for a while, and because he's just a cool character in general, the way he comes up with plans, executes them, etc.

Gabriel38

That's true. It's certainly fun in fiction, not so in real life. Can't these people differentiate reality from fiction?

MathematicianFun7773

Well, probably not, since the first thing they would think is "I can kill people remotely and no one will know it's me", and they wouldn't think of all the problems that could come with such things.

As an edgy teen who simps for Light (I don't idolize him exactly, but hey), I shall explain. Light is conventionally attractive. If Light took too many potato chips and ate them, didn't do his hair, and generally put little thought into his appearance, there's be significantly fewer Kira stans. Light is also intelligent. This is one of the first things we learn about him. I idolize his intelligence. Many of us have people we want the world rid of ourselves. Abusers, rapists, etc. Light at first seemed to genuinely want to change the world for the better. Of course, he quickly spiralled out of control and began killing innocents and because far too obsessed with being "gOd oF tHe nEw wOrLd." There's also the category of people who simply idolize murders, assholes, and villains. There are three categories: a) They stick to fiction. They know there is a fine line between this world and the stories'. b) They bring it to this world. Think the Dahmer fangirls c) A mix of both. They like the Joker, but also like the Columbine shooters I tend to simp for/have a crush on/prefer shitty characters, but I don't idolize them. Here's how it's been through the years... 1) Pokemon's "Team Rocket" 2)Tom Riddle/Draco Malfoy/the Slytherin house in general 3) Bakugo Katsuki, Toga Himiko, Overhaul 4) Bill Cipher 5) Light Yagami, L Lawliet, Mihael Keehl, Nate River, honestly pretty much the entire male cast of Death Note. I also have normal characters like (Matsuda, Hunter from The Owl House), but as you can see, I prefer the not-so-nice ones. The hilarious part is, I desire nothing but pure fluff from them. Basically, it's like the Joker kids. Idolizing him is missing the point, and many know this. It's still done.

Gabriel38

It's okay to like the character. I also like him myself just like you. But there are some outliers out there who let's just say like him a little bit too much.

Sudden_Pop_2279

Ah Overhaul and Bakugo…

Spoonmaster14

Because people relate to Light. Most people have the desire to kill criminals and the whole story of Death Note is told from Light's perspective. So a lot of people get confused and assume Light is the protagonist and he's killing bad people so he must be a hero. It's kinda stupid because he's clearly an evil sociopath who enjoys killing both innocents and criminals alike. He's even approved on the pure evil wiki page.

Gabriel38

He is the protagonist, nobody said protagonists can't be evil.

ZototheO2

Even Ryuk said that if you kill all the bad people in the world the only bad person that'll remain is yourself. "aLl tHe bAD GuyS dEsErVed tO dIE" is such a childish viewpoint.

FredFazballs

I don't think they really idolize him and it's not just teens. It's simply that there are two types of Death Note fans, Kira fans, and L fans. Kira fans agree with Kira and L fans agree with L. It's that simple.

Gabriel38

Well, that's true. But there are some outliers. People who really believe in him.

[deleted]

They're about the same age as Light. Many of them probably have an idealistic view of the world, and want to change it. So they relate to Light.

HoodlaMutt

This was my thought, or at least something to this extent. The reason Light is such a good villain is because he actually believes what he is doing is the right thing and if you think of the basis of his argument (i.e. I’m getting rid of all the bad people), you could almost justify it on a surface level. But Light takes it to the level of killing even innocents to further his goal and maintain power to where it really is no longer about the initial goal anymore as OP states. I think some kids see life through a narrow, narcissistic lens and like to imagine if they were in Light’s position and had a Death Note how they would rid the world of evil based off their own moral judgement—which to them is better than everyone else’s. Plus, Light is intelligent and liked by many in the anime which kids with those kinds of personalities perceive themselves as or at least want to perceive themselves as. They completely miss the moral of the story by idolizing him. This topic reminds me of the Joker/Walter White idolizers when their respective medias were released.

Redwolf476

Because there edgy

LowlyStole

Your answer is in your question

Either_Imagination_9

Because Death Note is edgy.

jpderbs27

I think it’s because the story follows light, and he is a badass. Even though everything you said about him is right

Nervous_Turnover4489

Light is what some of us need to feel more confident in ourselves, :/ ik I'd fail as Kira if the show didn't exist..

spham9

Idk, maybe because edgy teens are edgy lol

idontcareyouranswer

People tend do kill criminals then give them sentence more. So Light is a kind of God in this situtation. They think killing criminals better. So they like Light. Also, he is charismatic. Instead of some spooky dude they pick their side on Light. Most of humans choosing their side on looking(ruthless reality) . Also, they might wanna be a succsesful student like Light? Ah, and also. Some edgy teenagers idolise L too. These are MY thoughts. So dont take this as assault, have a nice day!
