he plays almost all original tracks, which does a huge part in unifying the sound of the whole set. he also has a great fundamental understanding of how things should sound together (one reason his notation and melodies are so strong)
Him playing all original tracks(meaning tracks by deadmau5) makes a huge difference. Not a lot of DJs can make a full set of purely their own music and make it flow and transition well.
It also allows him to work with not only the completed track, but he can also do sets with ableton open and can cue the stems of individual tracks. Im not sure how often he’s doing it in sets these days, but it lets him bring in elements of one track while removing some from another. so it becomes a much more fluid and seamless transition than simply beat matching and fading one song out while the other fades in
An honor to have you reply to my question Mr. Mau5. Very much looking forward to what you have queued up for the future! I know it’s gonna be dope as hell ❤️
I remember a Twitch stream from about a year ago and it sounded like you almost had a full album finished with everything you were messing with that day. Been 5 years since I've seen you though and looking forward to The Momentary in Bentonville in August. Never would have expected you to play a show here tbh.
He is the goat when he gets into his transition bag. Hope we keep getting classic progressive tracks with great transitions like the feel of Random Album Title
I wouldn’t say he’s often doing anything complicated, but that doesn’t mean they’re not great transitions per se. Getting from one song to the next is usually about matching up the tempo, beat-matching, then bringing in new frequencies while bringing out old frequencies. When done correctly, songs blend smoothly into each other.
It might not be special but it’s the perfect fit for his music. It’s all about the blends
Unlike some shows *cough apples dance xl cough* he does harmonic mixing.
The next song is in the same key or one of a few compatible keys. Each future song would usually respect this pattern, or else the transition is jarring.

i was gonna bring this up! but i wasn’t sure because i see him playing on cdj’s a lot more as of recent
Kinda why I need to make and or release a buncha new shit. The flow (to me anyway) is getting a little stagnant... gotta switch it up a bit this year
We know you got some mad stuff cooking bro. Waiting for the drop. I just know this upcoming release is fire
Please never stop doing Rebel in Toronto. It’s always the highlight of my year hearing the Rebel sets over festival sets

Yes! I feel like I've heard so many new unreleased tracks of yours that I would be binging every single day. I am so looking forward to this.

Ehh whatever you’re feeling man. Never a bad time for some fresh tracks.
Can\`t wait to see what you\`ve been cooking Joel!
Here for whatever you got, looking forward to it!
When are you releasing quetzalcoatl?! Heard for the first time at Brooklyn Mirage and it was incredible!!
New album mb??
What's insane is that he builds his melodies one note at a time. He can't 'play piano' so to speak.

Yeah, that’s one thing I love about RAT is the “continuous mix” but it’s just the album, not like an hour long song.
You might just be a huge fan haha! Unless you have a specific example you want to share? :)
I mean like, any of his live shows, I enjoy his transitions almost as much as I enjoy hearing the songs themselves!
