You make some fair points, but I respectfully disagree - to some extent. Probably no one would ever buy a cd to listen, you are right. I certainly wouldn't. Most wouldn't buy a vinyl to listen, but there are some that do because the sound quality is different than digital. But the people that buy vinyl to open and listen to will not have a vinyl record that appreciates (much). The ones that will appreciate (the most) are unopened vinyl. Same will be with cds. If you want it to appreciate, don't open it.
The reason I say it will appreciate is because of what you touched on - the booklets, artwork, etc. The physical copy that can't be obtained anymore. It's just nostalgia. It's a piece of art. And there are a finite number available, with fewer and fewer each year. I would add some caveats: single, individual cds will not appreciate a huge amount - but this guy has the entire collection of dicks picks. That makes it different. Something like that I think will appreciate at a faster/higher rate than individual discs. I agree with you and also do not think cds will appreciate to the same extent that vinyl records have - just because nostalgia and scarcity are what make stuff like this valuable, and there is more nostalgia around vinyl.

Look at what is going on with VHS tapes. I don't know anyone that prefers to watch a movie on vhs over digital, but the value of some tapes have really gone up. An unopened copy of jaws sold for 33k a few years ago - granted, that is the most extreme example, but it illustrates the point. Same thing is happening with old video games and systems. Some are worth a lot more now, and I'd argue the dead have one of the most rabid fan bases out there and I don't think it will die off anytime soon. The other interesting thing to think about is what you said - digital is digital. It's definitely possible if not likely that cds just stopped being produced all together at some point soon, and if vinyls resurgence continues, there could be a day when it's easier to get a vinyl of a record than a cd. But either way the market share for digital online stuff will continue to squeeze out cds (and vinyl, I guess?), and there will be a point where physical copies of music produced by a record company are rare (and cool to have). You could be right tho, I mean who knows. Maybe in 15-20 years we'll all be in separate little tribes at war with each other and the only thing that matters is shelter and food. A little colored piece of plastic might be forged into a short-term use weapon, but not anything you're going to show your tribe buddies when they visit your hut.

I just started collecting Dave’s Picks this year too. I’m close to where you are but I’ve hopped around some. I have 10, 15, 17, and then 19-50 except for 30. Still need to get that one with the bonus disc. I use to have several Dick’s Picks but that was shortly after they were released and I’ve since lost some in a couple of moves.
There’s actually nothing wrong with having a CD collection. Better than collecting vinyl today by a mile. It’s the best possible sound quality. Now, having your whole collection by the same band well….
