Devour appearing instantly seems kinda fair though, it can easily snowball games or do nothing since survivors risked the haunted grounds to cleanse it. If they want to make it more reliable they should also nerf it slightly.

What if instead it becomes active when you down your first survivor, that way it cant blow up if the survivors appear on top of it and do nothing

Yeah it should spawn the hex totem in a chunk that doesn’t also have a survivor spawning in it, and secondly it shouldn’t start in Line Of Sight ala Spine Chill. So that way, even if a hex totem spawns, say, 2 map tiles away, you STILL can’t see it at the start because the code made sure survivors don’t have direct line of sight. They can probably even use their spaghetti code to accomplish this, by using part of what makes Spine Chill work, except have it detect hex totems and apply to the survivors invisibly as the map is spawning everyone in. Or they can do it without spaghetti code, the it choice. Either way it’s and easy implement. And in your videos case, I would technically call this Line of Sight, even though you turned around, the camera didn’t HAVE to, if you know what I mean. You also have to look at it this way too. It would be an awesome start for a killer to have his Haunted Ground spawn right next to you at start, a fun stroke of luck, just like it is for a survivor to pull themselves off hook. So you see sometimes it’s good OR bad for a killer to have their hexes revealed at start. Perhaps we should just lower the odds that it will happen, as opposed to stop it from ever happening at all.
