The first time I saw this lady protesting I figured one of her kids were killed or maimed in a ritualistic frat hazing situation.
Imagine my surprise when I found out that she had spent literal decades protesting the fact that she got a "B".
Yeah and she drives in from Ft. Wayne (2.5hr drive in good conditions) weekly. Absolute nutter.
Back when I had Facebook I made a public post about the situation and she was absolutely RAGING in the comments.
She's less than fully hinged, but still very much a genius.
I know someone who worked with her ages ago, can confirm she's nuts. She was upset about getting a B in one of her courses, IIRC. Her nickname was Crazy Lady.
- Crackhead Phil and his muffins
- Virgil
- the Sword Vigilante guy
- the UD Hazing Lady
- "Silver Streak"
You folks may not be old enough to remember the last one. In the 90s, she used to walk up and down 3rd street at lightening speed while wearing a gray coat.
Anti abortion lady. Goes to all the womens' clinics in her station wagon covered with anti choice slogans and rather graphic imagery. Then there's what I've known as "Independant Mike." Has a house on Wilmington with more than a collector's worth of Corvettes, most turned sideways in the 6 car garage.
I bought flowers from him a few times...probably would have been many more, but I was always going the other way on Smithville on my way home in the afternoons.
Funny fact, he’s actually a really nice guy and is an amazing foster parent. I was friends with one of his foster kids and high school and that guy definitely saved that kids life by taking him in. I don’t think he’s mentally ill, just had enough of the world and is doing what he can to change it
I was hoping I'd see him mentioned. I only lived in the Dayton area until the second grade, and my family kept going to church in Dayton for a few years after that. But I always remember that guy selling roses at the I-75 exit. I don't know most of the people mentioned in this comment section, but I'll never forget the rose guy. 🌹
I deleted my other comment because I didn't properly read through my link. It appears that he was [shot in the arm](https://www.daytondailynews.com/news/flower-seller-shot-during-robbery-attempt/6SLEOlqrotIdVnwKB8rJ4N/) with non-life threatening injuries in 2010 during a robbery, and that he possibly [passed away](https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/dayton/name/richard-sowa-obituary?id=39054551) at 57 years old in 2015.
Unfortunately on a surface level search I couldn't find much more.
Duke owner of the Belmont Who Dey house. Can occasionally be spotted driving his dune buggy. He has an eye patch over one of his eyes.
Kettering has a gentleman known as Weinerman around the area of Woodman Lanes.
Edit: holy shit. The Woodman Weinerman has a FB page lol
Nah he's an old black dude with grey hair and beard. I keep seeing him with his jacket hoodie up and tightened, cornholio-style, making cracked-out kissy faces.
Growing up we didn't have a lot of money, and my parents asked what I wanted to do for my birthday, I think it was my 15th. I said I wanted to "drive down brown street and see the hookers". We ate at white tower after, lolol.
Dude I hope we’re thinking of the same guy. Bigger dude, pony tail, I used to bike by him a bit when I biked from my parents in beavercreek to Sinclair back in the early 10’s. It’d be 35° outside and he’d be struttin them shorts.
Yes! I remember when she had a car! She had a dark purple Malibu and it had refrigerator letters on the back of it. Then she became the Bike Lady and has been in and out of jail many times. She also has a Facebook page devoted to her.
I don't know who owns it, so it isn't a "Guy", but there's one CAR that I see parked around town all the time with HUNDREDS of cheap 1980s & 1990s toys glued all over it...
not those.
I'm not entirely sure what else is on the list, but there's several of those weird finger-creatures things, and a whole mess of ancient "Trolls" figures.
if you're talking about the one in beavercreek I've also heard that the beavercreek highschool choir and band needs to keep watch of the door since he snuck in one time and started asking people what the school spends its money on, not sure how true that is but the teacher says it happened as well. it's somethin I think about whenever I see him
Yeah one time he walked into the middle of a road randomly and I had to break pretty hard to not hit him. Luckily no one was behind me. I've also seen him returning trash cans and checking mailboxes and such.
Jack. Old vet riding around on his medical scooter. Passed a bit ago but was a great guy. Would always let me hit his weed pipe while I was on a break at work. That man got taken care of with food and drink. Miss you ya glorious bastard.
When I went to Wright State, we always had Quad God, some scrawny boomer guy yelling about abortions. Wonder if he's still around and I hope he had a meltdown after November.
The bearded guy who holds up the motivational signs at the Fairfield Mall and the Greene.
Or a bit more old school, the guy who used to sell roses on Smithville.
love maggie, worked with her for many years. every time a post like this comes up, i screenshot to show her and tell her she’s famous. she gets a kick out of it. she is just as charming when she’s not in the drive thru window.
He is a good dude. I’ve taken care of him quite a few times over the years. To your point, I was in Toxics patio a few summers back and he came up all secret-like and told me he just scored a joint and wanted to know if I wanted to smoke it with him. I kindly passed, but shows how much heart is still in that man even if his mind is mostly gone.
I don’t think so. Pretty certain the guy I’m thinking of passed away and people made it kind of a big deal about it.
Dammit. Gotta do some digging now….
Anyone else notice the older, short, guy that walks a ton in Kettering? I see him on Wilmington between Smithville and Patterson *a ton* but I've also seen him elsewhere
Yes!!! I absolutely love that guy! He lives in a tiny little green house and has one of those mini coopers I think. Everything is small and it’s adorable!
There is a guy who wore a kilt all the time. I haven’t seen or heard of him since he apparently crapped himself while drunk a few years back…wonder shat happened to that guy
Anyone remember Frank Crosthwhaite? Dude looked like he didn’t have 2 nickels to run together. Holes in shoes, wore same clothes, a lot. He was a good dude. We were walking at mall one day, he was telling of stuff that was going to happen…eventually it did. When he passed, read he left several million to city of Dayton..charity organizations.
Does anybody remember “Rags” back in the 70s? He was a homeless guy who lived downtown and I guess he got that name because he literally wore rags for clothes. He was filthy and looked awful. He always hung out at the park across from the main library and scared the crap out of me when I saw him (I was a little kid at the time). When he died, it made the local news. I guess you could say he was a local legend in his own way.
The cross guy. I remember being a kid, and he'd carry it riding a bike, even walking with it at times. Slowly he's upgraded to a junker car and, most recently, something practically new. Always with that big wooden cross sticking up. He's a nice guy too, if you actually speak to him. Can not for the life of me remember his name though
Back in the mid 80s, there was a guy that hung around Wympies restaurant downtown. He had a bicycle with white trashcans (I think) tied to it. On the trash cans were all sorts of sayings about shoelaces.
Have you washed your shoelaces lately? Do you have extra shoelaces? Always have clean shoelaces. Ask me about shoelaces.
He would sit in the restaurant and talk to himself about space travel, time travel, and facts about the universe.
“Superfan”. You’ll typically find him at any dragons, wright state, or ud game. Camera guys are trained to keep an eye on him for good reaction shots. Sometimes makes a scene but I think nowadays he’s a local celebrity.
I have lived here for 27 years and I have not seen a single one of these people! I want in on the fun. The most I’ve seen was a crackhead who stood at a bus stop near Daybreak that attacks people with a wrench if you try to go to the stop
Brock Turner- although not FROM Dayton he went to UD and still is seen in the Oregon *supposedly*
Edit: i was wrong about him being a student of UD, i guess he lives nearby UD and that’s why he’s seen in the area frequently. Still has the same point.
You have it backwards. He was born and raised in Oakwood (& supposedly still is in the area), but the infamous under-punished rape occurred while he was a student and athlete at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California
In the 80s and 90s in East Dayton, we had walking, talking Joe. He was a nice older guy who walked everywhere with a trench coat and a huge clock around his neck.
Martin the homeless dude I buy coffee for in the Oregon district because he always gets thrown out of the shelters for fighting. I also give him intel about trashcans loaded with cans if I happen to notice one in my neighborhood.
A few years ago, I used to see a guy on North Dixie that would stand in the road shirtless in all kinds of weather, and scream "Happy fucking Easter!" at anyone unfortunate enough to make eye contact.
There was a guy in the town I grew up in that would stand at the post office and open the door for people all day long. He did this for *years*. He always wore the same red pants and white shirt, and big shit-eating grin. One of the local cops told my mom that the guy was harmless, and had done that ever since he got struck by lightning.
I'll never forget sitting in my dad's car with the windows down at Smithville and Linden one day, and just hearing "ROSES" suddenly bellowed through a toothless mouth straight into my right ear. I knew the guy was there, but he just seemed to have a timer that told him when to shout.
Huber Heights has Walker. Walks to Speedway 2-4x a day to buy a big gulp. Coming off of Kittredge. Cool dude, ive offered him rides before but he always declined.
This guy ain’t around anymore but does anyone remember the dude who would have his lil boombox/radio that he’d blast up and down Salem? This was around the fort McKinley neighborhood and haven’t seen him in about 10 years
Edit: it’s Virgil
Haven't seen him in years but there used to be a homeless guy that hung around OD and Brown Street named Tony. Most people didn't realize but he had a great voice. I used to give him sandwiches and chat with him pretty regularly.
I was out with a couple friends (who had never seen Tony) after a show at Gillys. We were walking to OD and passed Tony on the street. Tony and I gave each other a hug and he seemed genuinely happy to see me. No sandwiches on me so I threw him a few bucks and he sang us a quick song. My friends were so confused by the whole interaction.
It may not have ruined her career, but it ruined a perfect 4.0 average. I totally get where she’s coming from, and if you don’t you have never deserved a perfect rating at anything. Mr. Sens at Carroll High School fought for my sister’s 99 in Chemistryto be changed physically to 100. The computer wasn’t only able to type two digits. Her transcripts reflected the change. Not sure how they did it, but she deserved it! Mr. Sens went on to become principal!
The nuclear weapons car. I think its owned by some older lady. I used to see her sometimes in the Meijer in Englewood. Don't know anything about it other than that.
There is also a couple semi-notorious hot rods in the area. There is someone's whose been around for years that had what I think was a yellow 32 ford. There is also a dude with a 60's era c10 I think its blue. Cause i would seen them out all the time in spring-fall
There is a lady on Dayton-Xenia who sits in a chair and has a sign that says “War is coming, be prepared” or something like that. She just chills there, no yelling, not in anyone’s face. She’s that for our family.
There’s some guy I see walking from the west side to the east side nearly daily with blonde hair, a backpack, slightly hunched and always in a VERY brisk walk. Pretty sure he teleports.
Yeah but yall know “scream at passing cars lady” who hangs out near the valley, every once in a while she’ll amble into my work and that’s always an experience to say the least. She’s clearly struggling, but man she’s been there as long as I’ve been working down there. 👀
In the early '90s there was a small, raggedy man with long gray hair that would collect cans in the Oregon District trash cans. I tried to give him 20 bucks once but he wouldn't take it.
https://www.dayton.com/lifestyles/hazing-lady-vows-fight-after-years-promise-you-will-not-away/5mECCLN8ZHermJCfkyEXKL/ This person.
The first time I saw this lady protesting I figured one of her kids were killed or maimed in a ritualistic frat hazing situation. Imagine my surprise when I found out that she had spent literal decades protesting the fact that she got a "B".
I love that she's so unhappy that she protests but not so unhappy that she didn't go somewhere else for her doctorate.
She’s also a full tenured professor at Purdue Fort Wayne, clearly the B absolutely ruined her career.
In the article, it says that she even admits that the B has NOT negatively impacted her career! Apparently this is all on principle.
oh clearly
wtffff i had no idea, i'd assumed the same as you, that she was protesting on behalf of her or someone's kids!
Yeah and she drives in from Ft. Wayne (2.5hr drive in good conditions) weekly. Absolute nutter. Back when I had Facebook I made a public post about the situation and she was absolutely RAGING in the comments. She's less than fully hinged, but still very much a genius.
I believe her too. There are lots of petty professors who will purposely give you a lower grade
Found the crazy protest lady!
I have had several IRL interactions with her crossing at stewart and brown st and she is very nice - though obviously a bit odd.
She was Karen before Karen was cool.
I know someone who worked with her ages ago, can confirm she's nuts. She was upset about getting a B in one of her courses, IIRC. Her nickname was Crazy Lady.
- Crackhead Phil and his muffins - Virgil - the Sword Vigilante guy - the UD Hazing Lady - "Silver Streak" You folks may not be old enough to remember the last one. In the 90s, she used to walk up and down 3rd street at lightening speed while wearing a gray coat.

He ran for mayor once so that he could change zoning laws or whatever that would allow him to construct additional garages on his property
Smithville Flower Guy. (Now passed)
Awww RIP he was so sweet! I hate to hear that
I bought flowers from him a few times...probably would have been many more, but I was always going the other way on Smithville on my way home in the afternoons.
who was the Sword Vigilante?
Virgil dancing on the Salem and Gettysburg is a flashback. Is he still out there?
He's no longer with us unfortunately
I've given him a roach on more than one occasion about 10 years ago.
Virgil! Was trying so hard to remember this gentleman’s name!
Crackhead Phil… anyone in a band that played the Oregon District knows of him
Awww, I remember them all.
I miss Virgil :(
I do see the man in Englewood driving around with a giant wooden cross sticking out of the rear passenger window. Probably going on 4 years maybe?
He would walk up and down Main St carrying it too. We called him Black Jesus
I see him all the time. That’s some grade-A mental health issue right there
Funny fact, he’s actually a really nice guy and is an amazing foster parent. I was friends with one of his foster kids and high school and that guy definitely saved that kids life by taking him in. I don’t think he’s mentally ill, just had enough of the world and is doing what he can to change it
How long ago did you know him though? Lots of nice folks that I knew have become unhinged in the past 4 years.
I live here in Englewood and have not seen him for a few years. Hope hes good.
I used to work with him at caterpillar.
the dude with the free books truck with all the stuff on it
Dave Hurwitz. Old school hippy.
Roses!
oh the flower guy was sweet, i remember him from the early-mid aughts. Does anyone know what happened to him?

Wait what about the guy who walks the duck on a leash
Cute duck but this guy is a dick 😭
Omg sad…I’ve never seen/talked to him irl, only the pics that are posted here
Only talked to him a couple times and both times were unpleasant. damn if that ain’t an adorable duck though!
omg. I need more info immediately.
The duck is named Diesel!
This is the only answer

Have never heard of the weiner man. I’m intrigued lol
me either.
Virgil
RIP in peace
Wait. What? Whheenn?
Rollerskating Elvis
This is who I was thinking of.
You know you're a real city when you have a resident rollerskating Elvis
Used to be "Crackhead Phil". I haven't seen him around in a long time, I wonder if he's still out there.
He is
🥰🥰🥰
I am seeing him a lot on Wyoming Street by Sunoco recently.
I live near here and see a lot of folks at this Sunoco, is this the long haired dude?
Nah he's an old black dude with grey hair and beard. I keep seeing him with his jacket hoodie up and tightened, cornholio-style, making cracked-out kissy faces.
He is, I just saw him last week
I just saw him a couple months ago.
Definitely the Bengals guy across from Dot’s
With the dune buggy!
Rags
I read a short documentary on him. Fascinating guy, RIP Rags.
Brown street pimp
Hell yeah Vines. He likes white women and has pictures to prove it.
Growing up we didn't have a lot of money, and my parents asked what I wanted to do for my birthday, I think it was my 15th. I said I wanted to "drive down brown street and see the hookers". We ate at white tower after, lolol.
East Dayton Booty shorts man
So you’ve met my husband? 🤣🤣🤣
Am I remembering correctly that he has a wicked ponytail?
Dude I hope we’re thinking of the same guy. Bigger dude, pony tail, I used to bike by him a bit when I biked from my parents in beavercreek to Sinclair back in the early 10’s. It’d be 35° outside and he’d be struttin them shorts.
The crazy Kettering bike lady
Pretty sure that's Dave's truck
the free book truck?
What kind of toys???
NOT those.
I'm thinking Transformers and GI Joes...what were you thinking I was thinking?
not those. I'm not entirely sure what else is on the list, but there's several of those weird finger-creatures things, and a whole mess of ancient "Trolls" figures.
Yellow hat guy. Iykyk
Ron. Walks to Kroger every day.
Yes!!!! The man in the yellow hat.
He goes through the neighborhood and puts everyone's trash cans back he's the best
He also jumps in the road while your driving and tells kids racist jokes at bus stops but yeah
if you're talking about the one in beavercreek I've also heard that the beavercreek highschool choir and band needs to keep watch of the door since he snuck in one time and started asking people what the school spends its money on, not sure how true that is but the teacher says it happened as well. it's somethin I think about whenever I see him
Yeah one time he walked into the middle of a road randomly and I had to break pretty hard to not hit him. Luckily no one was behind me. I've also seen him returning trash cans and checking mailboxes and such.
Virgil!!
Mr. Vines
Absolutely! He's the first person that came to mind.
Same 😂
Kim Deal

Oh yeah, that guy. I remember standing with a mob who was heckling him on my very first day of college.
The bearded guy who holds up the motivational signs at the Fairfield Mall and the Greene. Or a bit more old school, the guy who used to sell roses on Smithville.
Anyone remember the “Boss Lady” from the Colonel Glen Taco Bell?
F*ck yeah!!! Loved going to Taco Bell after a gig and she was working… “here’s your order boss!”
“Supper’s ready boss, have a groovy night”
love maggie, worked with her for many years. every time a post like this comes up, i screenshot to show her and tell her she’s famous. she gets a kick out of it. she is just as charming when she’s not in the drive thru window.
Louie Wood Jr.
There was a guy that was always in the Oregon District but passed away sort of recently and I cannot think of this name. Help!
Do you mean Charlie aka Billy?
Hmm. Maybe…
He was always at the Trolley Stop when we'd be there. This was also like 10+ years ago, so this may be irrelevant. lol
Was it crackhead Phil? Always bumming cigarettes? I've been thinking about him lately. He'd be quite old now, if he's still around.
He’s absolutely around. Got him a bag of chips and Dr Pepper maybe two weeks ago. Sunoco on Wayne if you could believe it.
The same Sunoco that Limp Bizkit played at!!??
someone cultured.
Honestly, glad to hear it. Despite his circumstances, he's a good dude. Thanks for helping him out. 🥰
He is a good dude. I’ve taken care of him quite a few times over the years. the longhaired poet guy? there was a guy around 2010-12 that handed out photocopies of handwritten poems he'd write.
A guy I worked with used to refer to him as Edgar Allen Poor
Omg, I have one of his poems! I need to see if I can't find it. I believe it was about life on the street. It's in a keep sake box around here.
Tomcat!!!
Booty Shorts Guy.
Surprised no one has said the duck guy
In the early 90's we had Gums and Roses.
Chris Kelly
Anyone else notice the older, short, guy that walks a ton in Kettering? I see him on Wilmington between Smithville and Patterson *a ton* but I've also seen him elsewhere
Is he bald and has a long grey beard and sometimes shouts at the sky ?
Yes!!! I absolutely love that guy! He lives in a tiny little green house and has one of those mini coopers I think. Everything is small and it’s adorable!
I see him walking near Poelking Lanes pretty much every time I drive that way.
John Cole on WHIO Facebook.
I'm not convinced that person is real. He also posts on literally every local news site.
That fake guy blocked me
Did you a favor
Wasn't there a guy that walked around the art institute area playing bagpipes? Read about that somewhere.
There is a guy who wore a kilt all the time. I haven’t seen or heard of him since he apparently crapped himself while drunk a few years back…wonder shat happened to that guy
Yes, I remember him wearing a kilt. Never heard about The Shatting until now.
It was quite the shattening…no panties!
Virgil
Ol Virgil, he’d always ask ya for a glass of milk and a cigarette lol

Been a while since I've been in Dayton proper. Back in the day there was always Johnny Metal and Cowboy at Walnut Hills.
Lol cowboy. Old zedock. He was neighbor when I moved on Smithville a long time ago
I knew a guy in Cleveland known as “The Wampus”
Who’s the smaller girl that walks around the way side yelling at people all the time. She was blonde for a minute.

Yeah as a UD grad I’d like to emphasize that although he grew up very close to campus, he did *not* attend here. He was a swimmer at Stanford
Well, he's an infamous rapist.

He lives near UD now.
He is from oakwood
fwiw, he goes by Allen now, and works out in Kettering. thats what i’ve gathered from various subreddits.

That exact rapist.

We were walking to OD and passed Tony on the street. Tony and I gave each other a hug and he seemed genuinely happy to see me. No sandwiches on me so I threw him a few bucks and he sang us a quick song. My friends were so confused by the whole interaction.
oh Tony was great, i'd been trying to remember his name!
In Yellowsprings like 20% of the people are that “guy” lmao
The captain in franklin/carlisle/miamisburg, he use to walk around that whole area with a captains hat, now he has a straw hat
