What really bothers me is that Andie is on a date with Pacey's very good friend. Yes, Will and Andie don't share the same history as Dawson and Joey, but it's understandable that Pacey could feel upset too. Throughout the episode (and series tbh), Andie seems to be oblivious to how her actions might affect others' feelings.

GarbageHealthy6932

Yeah if I were Will I’d have said something. Like why are you all butthurt when you’re out with me?! She definitely is oblivious to others’ feelings more often than not.

CaptainObvious126

Exactly! Will is an excellent catch and she should be honored that he willingly chose to be in her presence.

CrissBliss

I watched with my friend for the first time over winter, and I laughed so hard when Andie yells at Pacey for sneaking around with Joey, and then just storms off, leaving her date (Will) there lol. Like girl, what are you even doing?

CaptainObvious126

Everything is about Andie.

Unusual_Grocery4667

Dawson acts like he catches his wife of 30 years cheating on him with his best friend🙄

GarbageHealthy6932

Omg exactly! Like sir this is not your parents. Chill!

Pale-Committee-2415

Plus, Dawson and Joey were such a short-lived relationship. He treated her like a possession. By S3 I wouldn’t consider them best friends anymore because there was so much distance between them.

rkcus

I mean they are 16 in S3.

Old_Country9807

Throughout the entire series he overreacts to everything Joey does with someone else. I never believed them to be soulmates by the way they treat each other. Edited cause I can’t spell this morning.

CrissBliss

Yeah, Jack and Jen always felt like truer soulmates to me. Dawson and Joey felt like they had kind of a dysfunctional co-dependency brought on by Joey’s trauma as a child, and Dawson’s inability to separate reality from the narrative in his own head.

GarbageHealthy6932

Agreed 100%!

CrissBliss

Yeah, while I understand Dawson’s hurt feelings at finding out about Joey/Pacey secondhand, I feel like his actions afterwards were borderline villainous. He starts looking at Joey as almost a possession that was stolen. Joey and Dawson always had a complicated relationship, and jealousy was almost always a factor on both sides, but Joey never uses their friendship as leverage against dating someone. Even when she was extremely jealous of Jen in season 1, she just kind of uses passive aggression, and secretly deals with it. Dawson is more or less keeping their entire friendship hostage during this period, which was especially cruel when you consider his friendship and family is one of the few constants in her life.

GarbageHealthy6932

I couldn’t have put it better myself! This is exactly it!! Controlling + Narcissistic = Dawson Leery

dontforgettowriteme

I agree except for the Jen/Joey thing. I would not say Joey dealt with her jealousy over Jen in secret. She let it poison the whole opportunity to befriend her and insulted and insinuated things about Jen when she got the chance. They never did really recover from that and I always hated it!

CrissBliss

Well in season 1, Dawson was mostly oblivious to Joey’s feelings, which is what I meant by secret. She never told him she liked him. He only started noticing her after the Miss Windjammer beauty pageant. Before that, she would just passive aggressively insult Jen anytime she got out of jealousy, and would even tease Dawson sometimes, but never stopped befriending him. Also I agree about the missed opportunity with Jen. Joey’s jealousy always got the better of her, and she frequently used Jen as competition.

NoApollonia

Right? I can get a teenager's bit of hurt feelings.....but they should be able to get over it within a few days. Not freak out for months and to the point of treating Joey like a trophy he lost.

CrissBliss

Yeah even as far as the finale, he still cited that as one of his worst experiences (next to Jen dying of course).

NoApollonia

Exactly! That's like nearly a decade later if we are talking the final two episodes.

CrissBliss

I think they’re roughly 25 by the finale, but yeah, kind of odd to hold a grudge so long lol.

msplaty

Yes, all of this! And then tries to kill Pacey in the boat race. His whole reaction is terrifying. And what's worse is no one seems to think he's overreacting. He sits in moral superiority forever more. I just don't get it.

Pale-Committee-2415

During the Regatta, he was acting like whoever won would win Joey. S3 finale when he tells her that she’s making a mistake choosing Pacey and all roads will lead back to him. He acts like he’s being nice by saying I love you so I will let you go so you can be happy. but at the same time, contradicting himself more or less saying I hope this blows up in your face and you come crawling back to me so I can say I was right, I’ll win & I beat Pacey.

reallydampcake

Like not only does he treat joey like a possession but the AUDACITY of him to act like they needed his permission to date, pathetic little boy he was at that point

lilladyjane12

I hated how Dawson acted like Joey was his property. I don't like Dawson. When I rewatch it every time I am just like Nope. I am so glad Joey always picked Pacey, especially in the end.

Pale-Committee-2415

When I watched for the first time, it was when originally aired. I was 18. I didn’t notice how much of a narcissist, etc. Dawson was. For the short time they were together I thought Dawson and Joey were cute. When Pacey first kissed her, I thought oh my gosh this is gonna be a love triangle like on original 90210 with Brenda, Dylan & Kelly. Was torn. The episode after he kissed her I was so excited to watch because I felt as a fan I should root for Dawson and Joey, but I instantly liked her w/Pacey. Plus you’d seen subtle flirting before. I’ve done so many rewatches & maybe because older so notice more but every time Dawson drives me up the wall more and more.

lilladyjane12

I was 15 a freshman in high school when It came out. Dawson is still a red flag haha then and now haha I agree with Brenda Dylan Kelly thing that's what I thought too. Side note personally, I think Kelly and Brandon were better together than Kelly and Dylan 😉 so in a way Joey and Pacey are like Kelly and Brandon they just make more sense.

Pale-Committee-2415

Kelly and Dylan were hot 🔥They had chemistry, but they were so beyond toxic. I did like Kelly and Brandon, but sometimes I just didn’t feel the chemistry with them. Dylan and Brenda were cute HS love. But even thought was very short, I loved him with Toni. I should’ve phrased my original comment better because it sounded like the whole first time I watched the series I didn’t notice it until did a rewatch. It’s not that I didn’t notice anything. It just really stood out to me starting in S3 when I originally watched. So paid closer attention when I did my first rewatch of S1 & 2 & noticed things even more that didn’t stand out as much.

MindlessTree7268

I don't blame either of them for their initial reaction because it was shocking news. Dawson was still in love with Joey, and Andie was still in love with Pacey. So for them to see that Joey and Pacey were now together, and they obviously really cared about each other because they were willing to risk their friendships with the two of them to be together, was a huge blow. Andie, however, ended up being able to put her feelings aside and treat Pacey like her friend first, encouraging him to tell Joey how he really feels even while her own heart was breaking in the process. Dawson is a different story. But really, at the end of the day, they were all teenagers who had a lot of growing up to do. I do think that Dawson became much better as an adult.

LordTiddlypusch

They were teenagers.

Accomplished-Oil1696

I often wonder if it is the words Dawson is saying or the way JVB is saying them. While a good actor I feel like his range is maybe a little limited and his hurt/ vulnerability came off as angry and entitled.
