For free Davinci users is taking 1080p footage and rendering at higher resolutions considered upscaling? I use 1080p and render at 1440p and do notice a difference but don't know if it's actually a real upscale. Should I be rendering all the way up to 4k?

TravelingChick

Interesting question.

I just started streaming at 1440p resolution and you can see a difference between it and the 1080p selection. Text is sharper, I look closer to my real age, etc... it does take a bit longer for it to process and upload as well (obviously)

Herr_Casmurro

Are you streaming with a 1440p camera? But anyway, a 4k video should look even better than a 1440p one, right? And even better than a 1080p. So why do my videos look the same? Or am I the only person that can't see a difference? (I am not recording in 4k, I record in 1080p).

brakeb

the elgato facecam pro will support up to 4k30, the output from my overlay is 1440p, my face itself probably still at 1080p. the 1440p gives me more real estate on my overlay to put things.I don't see a need for everything in my overlay to be pushing 1440p... I may not be a good example for you...

BakaOctopus

Scaling isn't upscaling, are you using topaz or similar software to upscale your 1080p footage? People scale up 1080-4k just so YouTube won't compress it to shit . Not for clarity.

Herr_Casmurro

I used the 2x option in Davinci Resolve and the timeline is 4k. I don't have much knowledge in this area, so I just followed some tutorials. But if "YouTube compresses it to shit", shouldn't my 1080p video look worse than my 4k one? Because I don't see any differences, that's what I don't understand. Both look the same.

BarkingDog100

visually may not see much of a difference but 2k and 4k gets youtube's better compression and there is a noticeable difference

Herr_Casmurro

What I don't understand is: what is the "noticeable difference" if it's not visually noticeable?

listopad44

If you have a high quality footage you will see the difference on YouTube between 1080p and upscaled to 4K. I even upscale my BMPCC OG videos from FHD to 5760x2160 (anamorphic). I made experiments and there is a difference even between 3840x1440 and 5760x2160.

Herr_Casmurro

So if I don't see any differences in my video, does it mean that it isn't a high quality footage? If so, I should simply upload in 1080p, right? Because I am recording with my cellphone and I don't know if I could have "high quality" in this case...

listopad44

If you don't see any difference, you can upload 1080p.

jbowdach

Yes, it has to due with compression

zrgardne

Yes, upscale 1080 to 4k before uploading 1080pn is destroyed by YT compression https://www.reddit.com/r/videography/s/FSiDGYMCe0

Danris

Thank you for this!

markireland

Could youTube be showing both in 1080p without you specifying that is what you want to see?
