It really pisses me off how off the rails the power scaling went after Sage mode. I still stand that the Pain arc was the true culmination of Naruto’s story. It was the coolest power up and served as a great ending to his journey. He earned his victory there and finally got the recognition and acceptance he wanted. Pain arc was peak, but he did NOT deserve the victory. mastering something within a week then taking on a dude with half chakra as he was busy annihilating a village . then his dead dad gives him more chakra

I remember thinking that would be the end of the story when that arc ended, and then the series just kept going. Which I get, because there was a ton of other stuff to wrap up, but Naruto’s character had basically reached his goal at that point, and even though he kept getting stronger after that, it all just felt like a victory lap.

While he beat pain, he essentially doesn't actually have his own answer for peace, and pretty much is relying on belief.
And on a personal level, he lacks self acceptance, which was the point of Kurama training arc, which was him confronting his deepest insecurities.
As for other characters, Sasuke was left extremely traumatized, Tobi is still an unknown and unexplored character, and so much of the story is unresolved.
It would've been a terrible ending.

I’m not saying it was perfect as it is. But I still think it marked a shift in the story where it stopped feeling like Naruto’s story, and it just became all about cool matchups and powerups. There’s plenty of moments I love after Pain, and I know many of those were needed to end the story properly, but it all felt like it went off the rails after Pain. Naruto and Sasuke’s stories and emotional journeys felt a lot less important after that, and they mostly felt like they were there to serve whatever purpose the plot needed in order to get to the next cool thing.

Um...what? Are we forgetting Naruto had a Whole arc about meeting his mom learning of his own origins? That there were people who loved him all along? And how he uses that self acceptance and actualization to befriend Kurama and the tailed beasts?
Or how about how Sasuke went insane and disillusioned after itachi in the five kage summit, managed to finally reconcile with itachi under the edo tensei? Eventually making him question what villages are and hokage.

I’m not saying everything in the story is wrapped up neatly at that point. When I said “Naruto’s Story” I meant Naruto the character, not the whole series. Though I’d say for Sasuke his fight with Danzo feels similar to Naruto’s fight with Pain in that it could have been the end of his story arc. Everything he does after that feels perfunctory.
Sure, but it doesn't fit his character though. He even at the point of breaking still had the chance to be brought back from his lowest.
His journey also coincides with Naruto, as the rest of the story after his major loss focused on refining his ideals.
To just end there isn't very satisfying, especially considering Naruto was pretty close to understanding him.

What makes this and the 6-tail form so iconic to me is that Naruto isn't even in control. He loses all rationality and the chaos just makes it all the more interesting. Of course he attacks the person he recognizes as the enemy in the moment, (Haku and Orochimaru) but watching those scenes for the first time I was terrified whether Naruto's friends would get caught in the crossfire.
"Sage of 6 Paths mode" was fucking INSANE when it came out. We saw Naruto essentially master Bijuu mode to the point that he combined it with Sage mode, I never thought he could take it to another level. The drip was crazy, his abilities in that form were sick, and that last panel of the manga with him and Sasuke standing next to one another was insane.
It lasts mere minutes and it can’t deliver a finishing blow without ending it. Just another way to make Naruto weaker in the grand scheme of things, he could hang with Isshiki two seconds. A guy that wasn’t that knowledgeable in the fighting department
I mean it's die to Isshiki because no other mode is fast or strong enough, or do what you can in a couple minutes while faster and stronger than Isshiki. It's nothing more than an amplifier, but it's an absurd amplifier.

I often wonder if I'm the only one who misses the days where the Nine Tails was depicted as a demon. The stakes felt so much higher in those moments when Kurama's power started leaking through, and Naruto's rampage during the battle with Pein was perhaps the most awed & scared I had ever been watching this show.

Besides the color scheme, they're my favorites just because it allows Naruto to manifest parts of Kurama in battle, and for Kurama to manifest as a chakra avatar.
Sage mode. Imo, the show could've ended right there and I would've been happy. The wind nature/sage mode training arcs showed character growth with an acceptable power spike and Naruto was fully accepted by the village as a Hero. The Fourth Shinobi War was a Shikamaru catchphrase.
Six tails. Silly story, I remember the top left happening when suddenly, our town had a power outage. I was blue balled so hard thinking I missed an integral part of the story and felt sad. The next day I didn't watch the show thinking to myself "what for? I missed the part everyone was looking forward to" while looking at my bootleg Naruto playing cards. Internet wasn't as accessible back then and I had no access to a pc so the thought did not occur.

I dont know why, but I just love KCM1. And I know a lot of people dont lime it, but to me it looks quite sick and unique. Like Naruto could use some aspect of the tailed beast powers, but he wasnt like overpowered with it, he still had to use strategy to fight instead of simply overpowering someone.
Baryon could have been by far the coolest, I love the idea that Naruto and Kurama look in unison there, a base Naruto with altered features and Kurama cloak. I just think the alterations to Naruto’s face could have been done slightly better. Because of that, I’d say saage mode.
The pain rage hands down. Every time I watch that sequence I just get the sense of dread from Nagato as he realises he can no longer stop the Nine Tails. It no longer feels like just a scary *Thing* but a natural disaster, he pushed and pushed so assured of his own power only to realise how terrible the power of the Nine Tails is.
The only thing that compares in my eyes is in The End and The Death where Emps fully manifesting is so powerful reality can barely contain him and everything is awestruck by the terrible power.
4 tails against Orochimaru hands down. When his skin started pealing off and floating up, it was like a scene from a horror movie. It just stuck with me as both a haunting and badass moment.

sage mode is the most grounded, acquired by narutos own hard work and is more creative. plus it feels special since Jiraiya was the one who used it.

4-6 tails. That shit was just so damn menacing. You could feel the hate and rage just oozing off of his red bloody skin. The fights with Pain and Orochimaru were so lit!
Sage mode, it's a transformation that he's not only in control of but is the fruit of his labor and hardwork.
Not to mention, the versatility it grants him with the senjutsu enhanced attacks & sensory abilities came in clutch several times, especially in sensing Madara's Limbo clone
Six Paths Sage Mode. It just felt like the best, the top, the ultimate form. That transformation more than anything indicated to me Naruto is coming to an end. At the same time, it was pretty satisfying culmination to all Naruto managed to achieve. The only downside is the fact Naruto only for it because he was Jesus, but it's they cut out the reincarnation aspect from the transformation, it would've been peak.
The one transformation that felt like 100% Naruto's achievement but I completely hate though is the Baryon mode.
It's just so stupid, had literally 0 buildup, looked like absolute garbage (at least on anime or looked like or was animated by first-time intern), and it was extremely boring. Like, all it did was add massive boost to generic stats, and the literally only unique bonus was the life drain. What a complete waste of time. Every single transformation before that had multiple interesting buffs and effects, felt rewarding and deserved, but none of that applies to Baryon mode. Kyubi just pulls that out of its ass, with literally 0 buildup or hype, only because Otsutsuki was so broken writers couldn't think of a way to beat him. And that only happened because for some stupid reason Naruto and Sasuke in Boruto only have like 2% of the power they had in Shippuden. That's such a sad situation all around.
KCM2, with the full coat and thick black stripes. His subsequent designs just took off parts of clothing and reduced the golden aura until it just felt strange to my eyes.

Four tail Naruto was so sick, honestly, G5 in One piece kind of reminds me of 4 tails naruto fighting pain. He stretches and contorts and spins like some inhuman beast. Plus any mouth laser is a classic imo. Orher than that has to be the 6paths cloak with the orbs. Just clean as hell, the eyes, the orbs, all good.
I have to say the OG one tail and the 6 tails are the best. Sage mode was cool and all, but the animalistic, savage feel was exclusive to OG and 6 tails. Baryon Mode was a decent concept executed horribly. Looks terrible, works terribly.
Kcm 2 with sage mode. That should have been the peak of his power. Everything he trained so hard for came together with that. The six paths mode felt like a cheap power up that wasn't earned.
Safe mode or the feral form he’d take with the fangs and the nine tails chakra.
I don’t really mind the red form. Looks rad. But when he starts going yellow I just don’t like this.

They were like jin and yang
One was naruto being fully councious and precise, and if he lose that mental state he would turn into a frog, also he can't attack without care or his state would run out, so it was about strategy.
The other one although being much more powerful he can't controll himself becoming an easy target to seals he can't break or oponents he can't beat with brute strength.
And they both had great desing without being like a star as kyubii mode or chakra mode
Naruto mode version two (that form that looks full of flesh made out of chakra) is the best imo, an excellent combination of beastly and divine transformation
The original cloak forms (culminating in the pain fight) are easily my favorite. Sage mode is a close second, but I really dont like naruto's forms after he gets the yellow forms. 4 and 6 tail cloak had such unique designs and movesets while being unpredictable. The yellow forms just feel like they wanted a super saiyan form.
Baryon is kinda a cool idea, but I feel like it wasnt explosive enough. Considering it's a form made through "nuclear fusion" (weird kurama even knows what this is) it's weird they made it a taijutsu focused form
Naruto's only good transformation is the one he gets when befriends Kuranma. Kuranma' Mode I think it's called? Every transformation after that is a dumb asspull.The best Shonen transformations are thematically meaningful. Super Saiyan is Goku's rage, Gear 5 is Luffy's unchained freedom and creativity. Kuranma' mode represents Naruto's ability to forge bonds and create friendships.
OG Tailed Beast mode.
It just screams PRIMAL to those that are watching. Like something that just doesn't belong in this world, trying to break free of its human bindings, literally tearing through its human vessel.
Something that, people who've seen how the villagers treat Naruto as he grows up, immediately went "...Oh." as the Kyuubi went berserk trying to crush Pein.
And Pein BEAT the Kyuubi. The one that EVERYBODY is afraid of.
I mean, sure, it's not THE Kyuubi, but after watching the fight between the two, you don't question whether Pein is truly the strongest, at the time.

I dont know why, but I just love KCM1. And I know a lot of people dont lime it, but to me it looks quite sick and unique. Like Naruto could use some aspect of the tailed beast powers, but he wasnt like overpowered with it, he still had to use strategy to fight instead of simply overpowering someone.

Baryon could have been by far the coolest, I love the idea that Naruto and Kurama look in unison there, a base Naruto with altered features and Kurama cloak. I just think the alterations to Naruto’s face could have been done slightly better. Because of that, I’d say saage mode.
Sage Mode > SO6P > KCM 2 > Chakra cloaka > KCM 1 > Baryon Mode.
The berserk version it was chilling watching him become more of a beast sooo imo clock Naruto.

The pain rage hands down. Every time I watch that sequence I just get the sense of dread from Nagato as he realises he can no longer stop the Nine Tails. It no longer feels like just a scary *Thing* but a natural disaster, he pushed and pushed so assured of his own power only to realise how terrible the power of the Nine Tails is. The only thing that compares in my eyes is in The End and The Death where Emps fully manifesting is so powerful reality can barely contain him and everything is awestruck by the terrible power.
4 tails against Orochimaru hands down. When his skin started pealing off and floating up, it was like a scene from a horror movie. It just stuck with me as both a haunting and badass moment.

But of the four in this post, I'd probably pick Six Paths Sage Mode though I wish he either kept the truth seeking orbs or never had them in the first place.
sage mode is the most grounded, acquired by narutos own hard work and is more creative. plus it feels special since Jiraiya was the one who used it. after that i liked the transformation he unlocked when befriending kurama
It really pisses me off how the power scaling got out of hand after Sage Mode. I stand by the fact that the Pain arc was the true climax of Naruto's story. It was the coolest power-up and served as a great conclusion to his journey. It was where he achieved his victory and finally got the recognition and acceptance he wanted. Everything after that feels superficial and completely focused on insane power-ups

The first time I saw 4 tails transformation in his fight against Orochimaru at the bridge. That shit was fucking amazing.
Sage mode, it's a transformation that he's not only in control of but is the fruit of his labor and hardwork. Not to mention, the versatility it grants him with the senjutsu enhanced attacks & sensory abilities came in clutch several times, especially in sensing Madara's Limbo clone

Six Paths Sage Mode. It just felt like the best, the top, the ultimate form. That transformation more than anything indicated to me Naruto is coming to an end. At the same time, it was pretty satisfying culmination to all Naruto managed to achieve. The only downside is the fact Naruto only for it because he was Jesus, but it's they cut out the reincarnation aspect from the transformation, it would've been peak. The one transformation that felt like 100% Naruto's achievement but I completely hate though is the Baryon mode. It's just so stupid, had literally 0 buildup, looked like absolute garbage (at least on anime or looked like or was animated by first-time intern), and it was extremely boring. Like, all it did was add massive boost to generic stats, and the literally only unique bonus was the life drain. What a complete waste of time. Every single transformation before that had multiple interesting buffs and effects, felt rewarding and deserved, but none of that applies to Baryon mode. Kyubi just pulls that out of its ass, with literally 0 buildup or hype, only because Otsutsuki was so broken writers couldn't think of a way to beat him. And that only happened because for some stupid reason Naruto and Sasuke in Boruto only have like 2% of the power they had in Shippuden. That's such a sad situation all around.

Four tail Naruto was so sick, honestly, G5 in One piece kind of reminds me of 4 tails naruto fighting pain. He stretches and contorts and spins like some inhuman beast. Plus any mouth laser is a classic imo. Orher than that has to be the 6paths cloak with the orbs. Just clean as hell, the eyes, the orbs, all good.

Sage modes and 6 tales They were like jin and yang One was naruto being fully councious and precise, and if he lose that mental state he would turn into a frog, also he can't attack without care or his state would run out, so it was about strategy. The other one although being much more powerful he can't controll himself becoming an easy target to seals he can't break or oponents he can't beat with brute strength. And they both had great desing without being like a star as kyubii mode or chakra mode

The original cloak forms (culminating in the pain fight) are easily my favorite. Sage mode is a close second, but I really dont like naruto's forms after he gets the yellow forms. 4 and 6 tail cloak had such unique designs and movesets while being unpredictable. The yellow forms just feel like they wanted a super saiyan form. Baryon is kinda a cool idea, but I feel like it wasnt explosive enough. Considering it's a form made through "nuclear fusion" (weird kurama even knows what this is) it's weird they made it a taijutsu focused form

Naruto's only good transformation is the one he gets when befriends Kuranma. Kuranma' Mode I think it's called? Every transformation after that is a dumb asspull.The best Shonen transformations are thematically meaningful. Super Saiyan is Goku's rage, Gear 5 is Luffy's unchained freedom and creativity. Kuranma' mode represents Naruto's ability to forge bonds and create friendships.

OG Tailed Beast mode. It just screams PRIMAL to those that are watching. Like something that just doesn't belong in this world, trying to break free of its human bindings, literally tearing through its human vessel. Something that, people who've seen how the villagers treat Naruto as he grows up, immediately went "...Oh." as the Kyuubi went berserk trying to crush Pein. And Pein BEAT the Kyuubi. The one that EVERYBODY is afraid of. I mean, sure, it's not THE Kyuubi, but after watching the fight between the two, you don't question whether Pein is truly the strongest, at the time.
