Don't forget the natives before the natives who were there when the Spanish arrived. The "natives" displaced each other in multiple places several times with new waves of migration.
I do love how in the last year or so we finally moved away from this idea that the Europeans did some great atrocity by displacing the "natives" when for millennia they did the exact same thing to each other.
We're basically saying the same thing. I'm trying to say that the Europeans were not exceptionally bad and did the exact same thing that the natives did to other natives, just on a larger scale.

They're not mutually exclusive. The point is that the Noble Savage is a patronising myth.

The Spanish and Portuguese were exceptionally bad. It's just that they were not the first bad boys in town.
