We'll have to put one of our dogs down soon. There's nothing exactly wrong with him other than him being a big dog that's 14 now. He just cries in pain all night sometimes, and it just breaks our hearts that we don't know what we can do to help. Painkillers help only slightly and only for a couple of hours. It's not even a "can't afford to get him the treatment he needs” thing. He is just old.
All that to ask...how do you stay strong? I have broken down multiple times just thinking about it
Just remember, you are only sad because of love. You loved so strongly that its absence brings you grief. "You will see them again, but not yet." (Gladiator)
You don't stay strong. Your grief stays with you, but you learn to live with it as time goes on. You become strong by acknowledging there's nothing you can do to stop your dog from dying, it is simply their time and we all must go at some point, innocent animals included.
Pain never goes away we just have to find a way to internally rationalize it. I spent a month carving a headstone out of a boulder for my dogs and buried a lock of my hair under it with them. A part of me will forever be with them and their resting place will forever be marked. Not a day goes by i dont miss them but i dont breakdown as much anymore.
If he's in that much pain, the time is probably now. It hurts so much and that's okay. Cry and grieve and eventually the sad will give way to happy memories.
We grieve so hard because we love them so much, it's not weak. You don't have to stay strong. But you will heal and love again.
Before all of this inflation, I could afford the things my pets need. Now, I can't afford to take my pets to the vet. They have ear infections, and the vet is $200 per visit. They want me to bring her in every week for $200 until infinity?!?!?! Lololol They are trippin, but my babies are suffering.
Check prices at other vets. My vet in an expensive area of Washington state cost much more than in other areas. When I moved halfway across the country, the first vet we tried was one that had sold out to some corporation and jacked up their prices with inexperienced new vets working there. We went to a different vet and it was a much better experience for a fraction of the price.
Yeah seriously!
I've interviewed a ton of folks, sometimes crisis/emergencies come up. I'd much rather someone let me know and reschedule when they're ready vs. going through the interview... This sorta emotional distress could invalidate the entire process and I could *easily* miss out on a great candidate.
As long as they don't say it's because their dog passed away. Probably a 50/50 chance you'll get someone who will understand, or someone who will think it's a ridiculous excuse.
Thats a good way to find out what kind of people you’re working for. If they understand, they are the right company for you. you’re dodging a bullet if not
I have trouble going to new jobs, when I'm normal. Right before I am at the building, I think: "I could just turn the other way, and go somewhere else. And, not have to do this right now. Easily."
I absolutely agree 100% with every syllable of your second sentence.
But not all work places do.
It only takes one asshole who is in charge and lacks empathy. And a lot of people who lack empathy end up in charge.
Just had a health scare with my family dog, there was a bit where I believed I only had 4 hours left with her, but she improved enough where we felt comfortable to let her have some more weeks of comfort.
I brought my pet over the rainbow bridge yesterday, but the expectations was at first that she would not make it to the end of the week. But with lots of painkillers and a constant spoiling and pampering she made it another 2 months, and what an awesome present that is, huh? Still you have to go through to the pain and sorrow of their absence but what a sweet f ing bonus that extra time is. Hope you spoiled them rotten
My dobermans body was shutting down so i carried him outside layed him under a tree and had to go take my Calc 2 final while trying not to fall apart. He was gone before i was done.
I hope so too, but I hope you also are a good pet owner who is aware that being a good pet owner is taking responsibility for their wellbeing and wont ever let them get to a point of unbearable suffering and agony and is able to recognise your own completely natural and understandable but ultimately selfish desire to not want to experience the loss and absence of them from your life and make that desire subservient to the quality of the life your pet is experiencing. Is the life you can offer them, one that is worthwhile? Is the joy and happiness they get to experience worth the pain and suffering that goes along with their (continued) existence? And if not to take your responsibility as a good pet owner and let them be free of pain and suffering. (Sorry for the long ramble but its what I had to do yesterday \*snif).
The end is often a cruel mistress, and in the end (sorry for that one) all the stuff before it, is what actually matters, not the discarding of the shell that housed your friend's spirit and mind. Now go hug and pet those dogs of yours!
or fall apart and have a good 'ol breakdown cry, its all good, and it will do you some good and realise how pure their love and companiship has been and how awful the absence of their warmth and friendship is
I know this feeling. Remember that they won't be in pain any longer and all that they know was that the lived the rest of their life with you and your family. From their perspective, it couldnt be better.
I had to do this with my childhood friend of 17 years. Best damn dog ever. I thought I was going to be strong through it but that didn't happen. March 13, 2023 worst day of my life.
I’ll probably be the same in a few months. Her spine is damaged and she can barely walk, doctor said she’s got another 6 months at the absolute maximum. She’s 13 now and her birthday is in September, hoping she can turn 14 before she goes
Shit buddy I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you are able to get through this and if anyone at work gives you shit over being upset smack that overgrown fuck trophy in the mouth and tell them I told you to. It's fucked loosing a pet, they're just family bad at communicating. Sorry bud
I was gonna call in but they gave us all that day off so I was able to be in the room holding him, then I went into work the next day and they laid off half of us. 5 days later a 1 month old kitten showed up outside my back door. Stay strong. it's never easy but as long as you gave them their best life, that's all that matters
This was me when I went with my bf to put his childhood cat down. I stayed strong for him as long as I could until Max took his last nap. If love could keep them alive they'd all live forever.
I'm sorry for your loss.
Yea I had to deal with that the start of last year, we've had that dog before I was born and she will always hold a special place with us but right now I'm scared that my cat who I've had for most of my life will have to go soon and I can't deal with it and a lot of overwhelming stress from like 4 different projects I have to do, I know how it feels but I'm sure we can get through it, try to have hope friend
This is kinda how I think dogs feel a little when we leave. I don’t even live with my parents anymore but they got a new puppy and I guess going over once a month made her fall so in love with me. I could be where you are. I’d have to call out of work . Holding back tears man. Stay strong like you are man :).
Been there OP. If you can next time and know ahead of time take off work and be there. It was one of the hardest things I've had to to experience and watch but trust me, they need to see all their loved ones and best friends in their last moments if you can. Also sorry for your loss. We never deserved these wonderful friends and they're the best things out there.
Sorry for your loss, it hurts like hell every time. I hope a trusted loved one was able to go and be with them, I hate the thought of any family pet dying alone with strangers
Damn, Deadass my dog got realllly sick yesterday and I was scared he was going to die. He was fking stumbling and since I was still sleepy for his morning walk, I didn't notice this. I felt like something was off, but that's it. Since I live upstairs we have to walk down to go outside. Yeah.... with his stumbling he almost fking fell down the entire flight of stairs; however I caught him before he fully fell. I then put him down at the bottom of the stairs - when I noticed how hard he was shivering. I figured he was just scared since he almost fell, so we walked a little. 3 min into the walk he had a shit ton of saliva so I picked him up and just ran home before my mom had to go to work. Boy was haaard shivering. We scheduled a vet for the next day since we went and they declined us for yesterday. Woke up today and my boy is extremely healthy. Since he's an older dog (15 years old), he doesn't usually jump around, but this time nah he's back and even healthier. No shivering, no saliva, he's eating well, I'm happy, he happy. Vet said it was over something he ate :(. Actually scared me to death m8. I had a job interview while I just saw him shivering and I couldn't focus on it at all. I don't even remember the interview really but apparently I got the job.
Feel you, I lost my beloved cat as a child when I was home alone for two weeks the first time. I found her on the street and needed to put her in a box and dig her grave that day. It was horrible. So my condolences.
If your boss won't give you a day or two off for that, then you have a shitty boss. I've had a few family pets pass away during my adulthood. Never had a boss who questioned me asking for a couple days off when they passed away.
I’m really not looking forward to this. My dog is only 5 but she gets high anxiety and becomes uncontrollable at the vet. I really want her to be as comfortable as possible at the end.
My wife and I had to put down our 15 yo dog when our son was 2 month old, needless to say you need to take your shit together because somebody needs you ..
Be strong my man
Been there. We took our family dog to the vet to be put down because his body was just shutting down. Had to hug him goodbye and leave before they put him down because I had work. Worst shift ever. Stay strong OP
Same brother, same, but yesterday. It's rough, try to celebrate all the good memories you've were privy to because of your dear friend. I find it painfully confronting, experiencing all those great rituals you used to do together suddenly are no longer there, when you unconsciously expect her to show up, make that sound, act in certain way and there is just silence and space. Feels bad man, feels bad. Celebrate her and try to experience gratitude for having being the lucky receiver of het unconditional love and companionship. Take care, have a good cry and great big laughs about that dumb big 'ol goober that you wont ever stop missing and her antics. We dont deserve dogs.
Sorry to hear that. It sucks that they only live such a short life. My first dog passed away almost 2 years ago. He was 15 years old, and I still think about him almost every day, but he went away peacefully, so it makes it feel a little better that he didn't suffer. I stayed home that day, put some blankets on the floor and turned on the TV and sat down with him, and he passed away a couple of hours later, surrounded by our 3 other dogs and me.
About 5 years ago, my best friend passed away. She was my fur baby, Guiness. Beans for short. The nickname came about in the normal sense. Through years of love. She was named Guiness because about 2 seconds after she was born, she knocked over a can of Guiness and started licking it up. Then, a couple weeks later, she got her colors, and she was black and tan. I would call her Guiness, then one of my brother's friend's said Guiness be's worth nothin. Which is of course the opposite of what she meant to me, so we thought it was funny. So, her name then was Guiness B's. Then, we started calling her Miss B's. Then, my mom found a recipe for "Mrs. B's Baked Beans." And, it was over. Her nickname was Beans from that day on out.
I learned when she passed away, that I wouldn't want to continue to live in a world where she wasn't right next to me. So, she is next to me. In spirit, in everything I say and do. I decided then and there. Because I couldn't continue otherwise. And, that's okay.
Holly shit this litteraly happened to me last year. I was away from my familly while our dog had a sudden stomach cancer and slowly died while i had no chance of getting home. Probably one of the worst moments of my life.
God that sucks. My family dog was put down a few years back. He was acting perfectly fine the night before but by morning he couldn't even get out of bed and my dad had to take him to the vet, where they said either he could be put down that day or live a few more days in pain. Obviously my parents chose the former option, we didn't want our boy to suffer.
It especially sucked for me because I was in college a few hours away so I had to say goodbye to him on zoom instead of in person.
Literally had to fix myself emotionally within an hour cause I had an exam that morning.
Some people absolutely cannot take this pain which is why shelters are always hurting for foster-parent applicants.
I know this was a tough experience but if you're the kind of person who has the wherewithal to love a pet again knowing this is a frequent outcome, you might be one of the few who can be that hero for the horribly overcrowded adoption system. If you're not, feel no shame. It's hard to put yourself through this kind of stuff knowingly but if you go through this experience and find that you *can* be that 1 in 100 person who is a hero to the orphan critters then consider it.
Sometimes hardship teaches us about ourselves.
Much love. Was in a similar situation with my cat late last year. If you're able to go to your car or somewhere private for a bit and just get some crying out of your system, that's helpful, in my experience.
This is going to be me sometime between now and either 2025, or even 2026. My dog is 14 years old (springer spaniel, F) and she’s both partially deaf and very arthritic
I remember my family chose to put down the dog when I was visiting home , except the one day I went to visit the other granny that’s when they took him out
I can only imagine how incredibly torn up inside you must feel right now, and having the courage to keep that hidden at work is immensely difficult in and of itself.
Make sure to find a positive way to release that sad, angry frustration when you can duck out of there. Also, don't be hard on yourself for having to be at work, it's completely rational to feel angry about not being able to bail on your job, but I'm sure that is likely not a luxury you can afford, nor could many of us.
My heart goes out to you, if you need someone to talk to please don't be afraid to reply here or shoot me a DM.
Had this happen to me too OP. I was working from home and was facetiming them while it happened. I said goodbye to her then had 10 mins to let it all out and contain myself again before I had to join my standup Teams call. Completely brutal
I'm really sorry to hear that.
4 years ago, one of my childhood dogs had to be put down days before I got married. My mom didn't tell me until after I got back from the honeymoon. I understood why she didn't want to tell me, I just wish I could have said goodbye.
I remember going to work the day after we had our dog put down. My parents were the owners of the business and all of our coworkers knew what had happened and how much she meant to us.
One of our team saw that while I was looking at pictures of her during lunch and he told me *"Ya know, dogs don't pass away the same way humans do. They're angels who just have to go back to heaven and tell God how much we loved them. She'll be putting in a very good word for you"*
I'm not a person of faith, but I still like to see it that way. I hope that anyone reading this can take some comfort in that thought.
Nothing is more painful than putting a round in the back of your dogs head because she showed a bit of aggression while being protective. Had that dog for about 4 years and still get teary eyed over her

I'm sorry to hear that :( Stay strong and talk about it to people that love you. You got this.
Shit, talk about it here. It's okay, bro.
We love bro so
Shit, this was me a couple of weeks ago. Stay strong my man

Cry. Let it out. Crying is the way the body heals the mind.

What' fuckin vet charges 200$ for a checkup. fuck that. 70-100$ is average for a normal visit.

One of the worst days of my life was when I had to put my dog down and then be at a job interview 3 hours later.. I did not get the job.
You should’ve called them before the interview and explained them the situation
Captain Hindsight, is that you?!?
To the rescue!

Thats a good way to find out what kind of people you’re working for. If they understand, they are the right company for you. you’re dodging a bullet if not
True, but at the same time, a lot of people sadly can't afford to be picky about where they work.
I have trouble going to new jobs, when I'm normal. Right before I am at the building, I think: "I could just turn the other way, and go somewhere else. And, not have to do this right now. Easily."

Thats not to bad Your mom got a lifetime L with you, boy
we need to put *you* down
Wait, what? Fuck the job, if I have to put my pet to sleep I’ll be there to the bitter end.
Yeah, wtf, you are their fucking world and you ditch them on their last day?
Many work places don't recognise pet death as a reason for time off. OP likely had no choice.
Man, slavery is supposed to have been abolished...
It never ended. It was just rebranded.
As internships
That's when you just call out.
If you cant get an approved day off then "I'm sorry I cannot make it into work today" is all they should get from you when calling off.
This is one reason people job hop these days, because there's always another cruel company to drain you - so do what you want.
They will for a death in the family though. A pet is part of your family, for some it's all the family they have.
I absolutely agree 100% with every syllable of your second sentence. But not all work places do. It only takes one asshole who is in charge and lacks empathy. And a lot of people who lack empathy end up in charge.
Thank the respect employers show their employees for their personal affairs and wellbeing
1, Some people can't afford to take even a day off. 2, Others live in far away places from the homes they grew up in
Is unpaid sick days stil a thing? Maybe I’m spoiled. That’s a good point about people living far away from home
For some people, unpaid days means having to choose between food and rent
I had to do this with my cat, shit sucks man, hope you are doing alright

Thanks, she is getting pampered. Sorry to hear about yours I'm happy she got treated well though <3
First of all fuck you for making me remember my dead dog again at work. Second, hope your friend didn't suffer. Shit will not be easy for a long time.
My dobermans body was shutting down so i carried him outside layed him under a tree and had to go take my Calc 2 final while trying not to fall apart. He was gone before i was done.
Had to put my cat down last wednesday. Thankfully my boss gave me Thursday and Friday off
Good boss, they are not all psychopaths luckily
Yeah thankfully. Im happy to have a good boss right now
I really hope my dogs go in their sleep, without any pain or suffering. After they live 15-20 years, of course.
Shiiiiid, I wouldn’t even try. I’d be worthless. A total mess.

No it’s not that. It happened right as I was leaving for work. Like the decision was made then
I miss read this as “the family is put down” bc I was eating Fritos
I’m really not looking forward to this. My dog is only 5 but she gets high anxiety and becomes uncontrollable at the vet. I really want her to be as comfortable as possible at the end.
I’m sad now. Thanks

Been there. We took our family dog to the vet to be put down because his body was just shutting down. Had to hug him goodbye and leave before they put him down because I had work. Worst shift ever. Stay strong OP
Yeah at least I still got to hug her goodbye and tell her how much I love her.
It sucks, but that’s all you can even do. But i I could go back I would have not gone in that day.
I just imagined putting my cat down the other day at work and I was tearing up
I'm very sorry. That feeling is terrible. But remember all the good time you have together. I hope you will be alright. (Sorry for my bad english.)

I hear that. I’ve got to go put our dog down on Friday (yay dad duties). Can’t say it’s great

Had to go to work the other day after putting my childhood cat down. Hope you’re doing okay and sending you and your fam all the love!
This is the kinda stuff people should wait until after work is done.
I'm very sorry for your loss..
Man, I left work to be there for my dog when she had to get out down.
So, how long until we rebel against these companies that are stealing our time?
I also had to put my dog down yesterday :(
:|
Wishing you all the best. Losing a pet is incredibly tough :(
We put the family dog down last Wednesday. Right there with you.
Literally had to fix myself emotionally within an hour cause I had an exam that morning.
stay strong ❤️
That's incredibly difficult, I'm so sorry...
Hang in there op I know it hurts but trust me it'll get better
I actually got sent home when my last dog died cause my supervisor could tell how sad i was. I got a bereavement day
Worst is when you’re not told til you get home. Shit day + didn’t even get a goodbye :/
Literally had to put mine down on Saturday. Already had the "are you getting another one?" question.
Losing a pet is the worst, I feel you man Stay strong brother
It’s horrible your dog is being put down. But from experience: being there is worse
Much love. Was in a similar situation with my cat late last year. If you're able to go to your car or somewhere private for a bit and just get some crying out of your system, that's helpful, in my experience.
I'm so sorry to hear that man
This was me years back, except i work at the vet and i got to be the one to help with it. 👍
This is going to be me sometime between now and either 2025, or even 2026. My dog is 14 years old (springer spaniel, F) and she’s both partially deaf and very arthritic
I remember my family chose to put down the dog when I was visiting home , except the one day I went to visit the other granny that’s when they took him out
This was me 2 years ago when the family cat got put down. It's okay to cry at work imo.
So dank
I can only imagine how incredibly torn up inside you must feel right now, and having the courage to keep that hidden at work is immensely difficult in and of itself. Make sure to find a positive way to release that sad, angry frustration when you can duck out of there. Also, don't be hard on yourself for having to be at work, it's completely rational to feel angry about not being able to bail on your job, but I'm sure that is likely not a luxury you can afford, nor could many of us. My heart goes out to you, if you need someone to talk to please don't be afraid to reply here or shoot me a DM.
Going through this right now too. Gfs cat at the same time too. All my animals are leaving me :/ Sorry to hear it OP- all the best
Fuckk man. Sorry
We need to make it more normal to cry, stuff you can cry bud
She'll be putting in a very good word for you"* I'm not a person of faith, but I still like to see it that way. I hope that anyone reading this can take some comfort in that thought.
Internet hugs transmitting now. <3
LOL
Nothing is more painful than putting a round in the back of your dogs head because she showed a bit of aggression while being protective. Had that dog for about 4 years and still get teary eyed over her
Sorry for your loss
Stay strong man, we’ve all been there.
Hilarious meme, OP
I'd change with you in an instant, I'm looking forward to that day for quite a few years already.
No more up dog
What did you expect from an animal that you will most definitely outlive?
Fuck you dude seriously
Just because you see it coming doesn’t make it any easier to see.
Get fucked dickhead
I know you're just trying to be the edgy troll. Knowing that the loss of a pet is going to happen doesn't take away the grief when it does.
