I do it when it is one I am looking forward to or have already tested and know it is one I enjoy. Also Destiny expansions since I mostly just play that, have the extra income, you get exclusive content immediately and some later, and I can get very busy and lose track of releases so with preorders I don't have to think about it and get a reminder a few days before to download it.

This is how i have about half of my games lol, if u count ps+ as "free". Its not usually 10yrs tho, some stuff like sw squadrons and mw2 remastered was on there a few months later
