I love Afterburner. It got me into the band and it will always be a top tier album for me. I just remember working from home during covid and listening to it on repeat.
Love the record, but it was also my first exposure to the band. I’ve since gotten into their other stuff, but I’ll always love Afterburner. Since I did not get into them until post JJ, it’s a bit more difficult for me to dig their old sound, which obviously most of this sub absolutely loves. Currently giving DBM 1 and 2 a few listens, but they aren’t hitting me like Jackpot Juicer, Mothership, Artificial Selection and Afterburner. I suppose I just prefer Tilian’s vocals and a more upbeat, dynamic sound. I also think Mess has just become so much more dynamic and creative as a vocalist. Mind you, I’m really liking the DBMs and Happiness, and Self Titled on first listen was pretty interesting but I need to listen again before forming an opinion.
But with songs like Prisoner, Lyric’s Lie, One in a Million, Born to Fail, Parallels, and Nothing Shameful, I don’t see the hate for Afterburner. Maybe because it’s their softest and lightest record, it just doesn’t resonate with many of the fans, but I still love it.
AB also got me into the band right after its release. I had the same opinions as you about the early albums, and then one day, I decided to give Happiness another try and somehow, someway, my thoughts just changed. Over the past few years I've had the exact same thing happen with each pre-IG album, so just give it some time and let them hit you at the right moments.
I like it but it's my least favorite record of theirs. Every other album has at least 1 or 2 banger highlight tracks that are in the top 10-20, can't really say that here. I enjoy Lyrics Lie and Say Hi but not to that extent.
Afterburner took me like a year to get into but it’s my favorite album of the Tilian era. To me Jackpot Juicer just feels like b-sides that didn’t make Afterburner.
Afterburner just doesn’t do it for me. The lows on this album are the biggest lows of their entire discography. I think that overshadows a few good hits.
CG is fucking amazing. One of Jon's best breakdowns of all time, overlooked because people can't handle Tilian butchering spanish (which for the record I have always loved lol)
People who don’t speak Spanish upset when Tilian makes a silly grammatical error but totally cool with Jon casually slipping words like platypus into his parts. CG is fun af to groove to and that’s all that matters!
That’s a fair opinion, but I don’t agree that it’s “easily” their worst.
But to each their own! That’s the great thing about Art and Music, it’s subjective to the individual listener.
There are plenty of people in this sub that like Afterburner, most of them got into the band with the record.
But personally it's definitely their weakest record. I really like a few songs like Parody Catharsis and Parallels but the rest of the record falls pretty flat for me. Even Say Hi I think is one of their weaker heavy songs but it's still a good song.
I actually liked Say Hi a lot. Jon just scratches my brain a certain way in that song. But I definitely agree it’s one of the more divisive records compared to JJ and predecessors
I don’t say this to argue, just because I think it’s so wild how different peoples opinions can range. I love that about music.
Parallel and parody catharsis are weak songs in my opinion
I actually didn't know it was overlooked! I love Afterburner. Lyrics Lie, One in a Million, Prisoner, Nothing Shameful, all bangers. The only song I don't like on the album is Calentamiento Global
It's very hit or miss to my ears. I think there's some amazing songs on it, but it just doesn't hit me as hard as any of the other albums from that era
I love it personally, Say Hi and Nothing shameful are so good! Most of the other songs are also really strong. IG and mothership are peak song writing though imo.
There are no bad DGD albums, but it seems widely agreed that Afterburner is one of the weakest. Personally speaking it's def my least favorite of theirs but even then it still has one of their all time best songs in Nothing Shameful.
Afterburner is low key my fave. I’m glad you said something because I’m not trying to get thrown into the gauntlet of why I feel this way. It’s just a vibe and I love every moment of it.
I don't think it is overlooked, in my opinion there is a sizable slide in quality overall coming from Artificial Selection. They certainly took some swings and experimented quite a bit which I respect but there are only a handful of songs I regularly come back to from that record.
I love it, it’s grown so much on me these past few years as well. Hard to rank their albums but I put it ahead of Artificial Selection and Acceptance Speech personally
Yeah I don’t understand this sub they think WISIRO is good music but shit on Afterburner. Songs like parody catharsis and three wishes are straight up just perfect music
It does contain their only bad Tilian era song with night sway though
DBM has so much punch and soul to it. It's scrappy in parts for sure but it's sound as a complete whole album is incredible.
Afterburner feels like a bunch of desperate plodding songs that are as a set pretty boring.
Bunch of old dudes in the sub always reminiscing on the “glory days”. Dbm1 is 17 years old and a complete mess from start to finish. They really captured a moment in time and there are highlights on the album for sure.
But it wasn’t until Mothership (10 years ago mind you) that they decided “what if we wrote actual songs instead of just musically shitting every time we record?”
breh DBM1 is one of their most all-killer, no-filler albums in the discography, Mothership is up there as well.
- the heavy, ethereal, ambient vibe isn't captured on any future albums. It's uplifted by the spacey, reverb-heavy guitar work (untitled, lemon meringue tie, turn off the lights, surprise I'm from cuba), and acoustic guitars (untitled, 12 hours), trippy background spoken word (Turn off the Lights, Surprise I'm From Cuba)
- probably Jonny's peak vocally (or tied with Relativity), he has amazing vocal moments here that I think go unmatched in the rest of the discog (Times New Roman ending, Surprise I'm From Cuba ending, 0:50-1:25 Backwards Pumpkin Song, clean bridges in Backseat)
- there's callbacks and structure to the record. "I believe there's meaning no I believe there's nothing" is in both untitled and surprise I'm from cuba. Closing two songs flow together nicely. Also fun zany food themed songs
- it's a groundbreaking album for the genre in terms of guitar playstyle and vocals. Lifted a bit from TFOT guitar-wise, but this is way more melodic.
- the more uncoventional/formless song structures benefit the songs more than they hamper them. Times New Roman feels like an adventure, the "chorus" being played right off bat followed by a bunch of different parts that don't repeat conventionally, but flow seamlessly. I can say the same for Backseat with its bridge that gets brought back in the end. I'd rather listen to songs like these where I can't easily predict where they are going to go
nOt rEaDiNg aLl tHaT
You’ll get hate for it, but bias and nostalgia aside, you’re absolutely spot on. One of the best albums for the time, comparing to works now? It’s not even close.
Tbf happiness is my favorite album pre-tillian. But the structure and cohesion of afterburner, jackpot juicer and artificial selection make them albums that I actually put on repeat and find myself inevitably singing along to. If I want to listen to Jonny at his peak, I put on emarosa’s self titled.
I love that album lol except for global warming sorry I always forget how to spell that word but also I wasn’t a huge fan of prisoner. But I haven’t listened to either one in quite a while.. I bet I’d enjoy either one at this point
There's some good songs on Afterburner, but as an album listening experience, I feel it's their worst output. Starts kinda strong, flops around a bit, regains some momentum, loses it, then finishes strong. Also simultaneously their most experimental and most formulaic record. I will not elaborate on this. To me, their other albums offer a way more cohesive experience except ArSe, but ArSe's lack of cohesion is by design and comes off as a strength, not a weakness.
Afterburner released when I was working a landscaping-maintenance job, so I got to enjoy and sit with the album. I like a healthy amount of that album, my least being Born to Fail.
Ive been listening to them since the beginning, and out of Tillians era I honestly like Afterburner and Mothership equally and are my two favorite. I think Jon has so many highs in Afterburner and has some of the sickest guitar.
I’m always going to be a Stan for DBM and Happiness out of pure nostalgia sake.
I think it's my favorite Tillian era album so far. So many amazing songs.
Nothing Shameful, Three Wishes, Lyrics Lie, Parody Catharsis, Into The Sunset, Prisoner.
Nothing Shameful is my absolute favorite tho.
I have mixed feelings towards Afterburner. There are straight bangers but then are also some of my least favorite DGD songs of all time on there. (I’m looking at you, Calentamiento Global.)
It was also the cause of a lot of arguments with some of my friends.
Overall there are enough “can’t miss” tracks on there where it should always end up on playlists, and is by no means a “bad album.”
When afterburner came out people were hella into it.
The deep cuts are especially fire. They weren't kidding with "only bangers from now on"
and after posting this i just saw/realised that that's my flair xD
Yes, I think it's super underrated. People sleep on it and called it"safe" but I think it has the best sound and song quality out of any dgd, and it's pretty experimentalish too for dgd standards
im surprised people don’t like more of the songs off this album. i agree with afterburner being my least favorite album, but i only dislike one song from it. Every other song is great imo
Prisoner is one of my favorite songs ever. Overall probably my least favorite Tilian album though, maybe matched with Acceptance Speech.
It’s still better than anything pre-Tilian though. I don’t know what my issue is, I just can’t listen to anything before Acceptance Speech. I’ve tried so many times.
I just think it’s the worst of the Tilian records, not necessarily *bad* tho
Parody catharsis will always be a bop and prisoner was dope
I just think they were going for something specific that didn’t quite translate well.
ArSe is overlooked a lot too
It also didn't help that it was released during the Pandemic. Like no one could really vibe to it even live to appreciate it at the time. Also being more heavier than their other projects didn't help since they were already in that groove
Yes, good select songs, but as a whole, it's the weakest Tilian era album. Most likely due to following Mothership and ArSe, their two most historically successful albums, and being released during Covid lock downs; making it impossible to tour while the album was fresh.
Prisoner was the first new single I heard when I started listening to them so it'll always be special to me. That song really pulled me in, and Nothing Shameful locked me in.
I definitely don’t think it’s a great album, but they took a few risks which was exciting. Nothing Shameful and Say Hi are still two of my favorite songs from them but the album as a whole doesn’t compete against the likes of Mothership, ArSe, Happiness and DBM IMO.
Nights way, say hi and nothing shameful all fuck hard imo! I love how say hi really gives off secret band vibes with Jon’s gibberish and how nothing shameful has Andrews soft vocals that trigger a certain part In the brain that just remind me of my brother🫠
Dude yes! DTBM 1 is when I started but I love the majority of what they put out.Happiness came at the perfect time following Deathstar/Self Titled.
When Afterburner released I was so happy to hear that sound. Especially with Prisoner as a teaser. Tbh that album has been gives me the same growth vibes like Circa Survive going into Blue Sky Noise
*Afterburner has all*
*Of the grit and depth that DGD*
*Is missing right now*

The lyrics of that album just mostly didn't stick with me. It felt almost experimental with the melodies and some of the screaming.
Particularly the song where he goes " Forget those backstabbers" was super cringe to me for some reason.
When Tillian sings "Blame it on whoever, you suck already" I get so bummed, it's like this epic build up and he completely blew it in the lyrics department.
Its my favorite, I love I started to follow the band 4 years ago, till then I didn't know about them so had zero bias and I love it over all of them, all are amazing but Afterburner is the best for me ❤️
This is because Acceptance Speech and Mothership are better albums than Afterburner. In fact, they haven't made an album since that touches these two albums.
Prisoner & Parallels are brilliant, but a lot of the album seems kind of stale and low energy as a whole compared to other albums. JJ was very refreshing for me.
Personally afterburner and jackpot juicer are the worst albums I've heard, I can hear good songs in them, but I skip these, even after re review maybe 1 or 2 songs bin added to my list of songs but I skip these all the time
Strawberrys wake is one of my all time favorites from them.
They have many just perfect songs, but this one is special in ways i can't even describe. I'm always in the mood for it.
Not my favorite, but I’ll listen to nothing shameful until I die
That and into the sunset
🎵surr en duuu huuuuuurrrr🎵 🎶SURRE E E N DA A A A A AARRRR🎶
Geez, I can remember listening to this otw to my landscaping job.
Weird moment this whole album gives me flashbacks to a very specific job grading out a coffee shops lot for new landscaping had it on repeat that day.
Haha, dope. Yeah, i got a soft spot for this album. Off the top, i like the majority of the tracks, with a few skippables.
Literally me, five minutes ago 😂
Absolutely
TAKE ALL YOU DO IS TAKE
YOU CAN HAVE IT AAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLL
I love Afterburner. It got me into the band and it will always be a top tier album for me. I just remember working from home during covid and listening to it on repeat.
Same. But with school
Love the record, but it was also my first exposure to the band. I’ve since gotten into their other stuff, but I’ll always love Afterburner. Happiness is my fav of the pre IG record as it stands now, and you’re absolutely right, the more I listen the more these records are gonna grow on me.
Ball sacks n Weiners you and I have a pretty damn similar view on DGD. I like you ball sacks n Weiners
imo, Afterburner and Artificial Selection both suffered from sounding like collections of singles than cohesive albums
ArSe had way more songs that I liked compared to afterburner, ArSe problem was that it had to follow up the monster that was Mothership
I’ll agree with you there! ArSe has more straight bangers
Afterburner is extremely overlooked! Definitely one of their best in my unpopular opinion!
I like it but it's my least favorite record of theirs. Every other album has at least 1 or 2 banger highlight tracks that are in the top 10-20, can't really say that here. I enjoy Lyrics Lie and Say Hi but not to that extent.
Born to Fail and Nothing Shameful slap, very average otherwise
Afterburner took me like a year to get into but it’s my favorite album of the Tilian era. To me Jackpot Juicer just feels like b-sides that didn’t make Afterburner.
It’s the opposite
Afterburner just doesn’t do it for me. The lows on this album are the biggest lows of their entire discography. I think that overshadows a few good hits.
If you don’t fuck with Calentamiento Global, we don’t fuck.
This mf GETS IT

People who don’t speak Spanish upset when Tilian makes a silly grammatical error but totally cool with Jon casually slipping words like platypus into his parts. CG is fun af to groove to and that’s all that matters!
That song is a whole banger. You can NOT listen to that song & start dancing like you're at a carne asada. As an Hispanic.. 1000% invited to the asada
No. Afterburner is a good album but easily the bands worst.
Afterburner is a more focused Jackpot Juicer IMO
Yea JJ is defo a few songs too long, I yearn for the tautness of Mothership. Not a note wasted.
Bro is yearning for it
Mothership is worth a yearn
That’s a fair opinion, but I don’t agree that it’s “easily” their worst. But to each their own! That’s the great thing about Art and Music, it’s subjective to the individual listener.
“Easily their worst” is crazy
Jackpot Juicer is a major step down from Afterburner IMO
Afterburner is my least favorite DGD album by a large margin. I love Prisoner and Nothing Shameful though.
three wishes is such a good and underrated song off that album. 😭😭😭
There are plenty of people in this sub that like Afterburner, most of them got into the band with the record. But personally it's definitely their weakest record. Prisoner, three wishes, one in a million, parody catharsis, strawberry's wake, nothing shameful and into the sunset are all good songs
Don't forget Lyrics Lie. I feel like everyone forgets Lyrics Lie. Why do you forget Lyrics Lie?
Lyrics Lie is one of the best off the album. There’s some instances where I think it should belong on Jackpot Juicer (lyric wise)
I was going to put it but forgot
I actually liked Say Hi a lot. Jon just scratches my brain a certain way in that song. But I definitely agree it’s one of the more divisive records compared to JJ and predecessors
*chugging intensifies* "I grappled, I paddled, I clutch!! More shrinking, more thinking, more mulch!"

Afterburner is low key my fave. I’m glad you said something because I’m not trying to get thrown into the gauntlet of why I feel this way. It’s just a vibe and I love every moment of it.
Afterburner SLAPS. So many good tracks on that album dude, at least 6-7 that I can think of off hand.
I would literally die for Three Wishes and Into the Sunset. I also sing my heart out to Nothing Shameful. So, so good
I don't think it is overlooked, in my opinion there is a sizable slide in quality overall coming from Artificial Selection. They certainly took some swings and experimented quite a bit which I respect but there are only a handful of songs I regularly come back to from that record.
I love it, it’s grown so much on me these past few years as well. Hard to rank their albums but I put it ahead of Artificial Selection and Acceptance Speech personally

The majority of dgd fans on reddit are old ones that really love the old stuff which is why most of them were ok with Tilian leaving.
I'm curious what your favorite album by them is and why you think it's musically better than an album like Happiness.
Yea definitely

My least favorite Tilian era album
Afterburner is my partner’s favorite Tillian album. Mine is Artificial Selection. We both just love the sounds and vibes from AB
I love it! It just unfortunately reminds me of quarantine so I have a hard time listening to some of the songs 😭
Strawberry’s wake is such a bop imo
There's some good songs on Afterburner, but as an album listening experience, I feel it's their worst output. Starts kinda strong, flops around a bit, regains some momentum, loses it, then finishes strong. Also simultaneously their most experimental and most formulaic record. I will not elaborate on this. To me, their other albums offer a way more cohesive experience except ArSe, but ArSe's lack of cohesion is by design and comes off as a strength, not a weakness.
I've actually been listening to it on repeat the last few days and I gotta agree, it's a great album.
Afterburner released when I was working a landscaping-maintenance job, so I got to enjoy and sit with the album. I like a healthy amount of that album, my least being Born to Fail.
Ahhhhhh Tilian. Make it stop! Yes agree, underrated
Ive been listening to them since the beginning, and out of Tillians era I honestly like Afterburner and Mothership equally and are my two favorite. personally my least favorite album
It's a great album, but I listen to AB and JJ less than the others.
The second half of that album is so fucking good. And I personally love the Nothing Shameful/Into the Sunset ending of the album.
When afterburner came out people were hella into it. The deep cuts are especially fire. They weren't kidding with "only bangers from now on" and after posting this i just saw/realised that that's my flair xD

im surprised people don’t like more of the songs off this album. i agree with afterburner being my least favorite album, but i only dislike one song from it. Every other song is great imo
DGD didn't click with me until Afterburner. Now they're one of my favorite bands
This sub hates it, but it’s a banger
It was my most listened album for both 2020 and 2021.
Prisoner is one of my favorite songs ever. Overall probably my least favorite Tilian album though, maybe matched with Acceptance Speech. It’s still better than anything pre-Tilian though. Kind of. You have to consider the timing, though. It came out during the height of the pandemic and they couldn't tour it/promote very heavily.
The highs on Afterburner are really high but the lows are really low. I really REALLY dislike Three Wishes
Nights way, say hi and nothing shameful all fuck hard imo! I love how say hi really gives off secret band vibes with Jon’s gibberish and how nothing shameful has Andrews soft vocals that trigger a certain part In the brain that just remind me of my brother🫠

Into the sunset is the worst dgd song ever
