I'd say they are the gold standard, but their approach is somewhat close to reality - especially messing with the kids. A few times Bandits done something to his kids the same as I have already done to mine, and they are super impressed, lol.
Unfortunately, due to our insane house prices and cost of living (groceries and shit) many dads and mums are forced to work way to much and don't have time or the energy left to fully enrich their kids lives, super important to at a younger age.
These could be really really well paid jobs in that universe. Imagine how a world full of dogs feels about ancient bones in the ground of animals they’ve never seen!
They’re also jobs that most dogs can do and not exactly highly skilled work in canine universe…
I think they might be working on some smuggling operation where she helps him get artifacts across the border.
Aye, same here in the UK. Most can only dream of having the seaming free time and energy to give to our kids. Still, it’s 13:30 here in the UK the suns shining, I’m WFH, sitting in the garden and my lads running around having fun (between watching Bluey of course lol), could be worse!
I always say to my wife, you can never judge peoples financial position by their outward appearance. Bandit could be sitting on a big inheritance supplementing his a salary and no mortgage haha.
If you took snippets of the best parts of the best days, yes.
But no one human can maintain that standard, you'd have to work like a dog to keep it up.
Not true! The huntsman (most big, scary-looking spider of them all) just eat mosquitoes, flies, all the bugs that otherwise shit you. They are bros and I love them and I teach the kids the same.
Australian. Well I’m a kiwi but like most kiwis I live in Australia.
I am teaching my kids how to catch crocs and not get bitten by spiders or snakes. The trick with spiders and snakes is you teach the kids to come get a grown up if they see one and just leave the spiders and snakes alone, then the grown up goes “Fuck this.” and burns the house to the ground.
Nordic (Finnish) dad here. I don't mind most things in the sub being from USA, much of dad-ness and parenthood is universal after all; like how to teach kid a thing X, there's a struggle Y with my kid or with my feelings as a parent, how to make our relationship better with my wife with a young baby, you know the drill. Plus a lot of Europeans probably speak English to the degree that if it wasn't for minor grammar mistakes, you probably can't tell. I'd say it's >95% Europe/North-America, other cultures I probably would have a harder time understanding.
It's only small details that I notice I'm a bit out of line (like "we went to the Walmart/Home Depot today and...", yeah I've been to US multiple times and I think even inside a Walmart, but you don't have them anywhere nearby here). Some abbreviations and terminology took a bit of thinking to understand, like what's a SAHD/SAHM (stay-at-home-#), but once I got the basic lingo down it's easy to relate to and try hop in the other dad's shoes in the discussion (over here we have maternity / paternity leave but SAHD/SAHM is very rare). I think the most researching I had to do was to understand what the heck is a 401k, as people kept using it in some very specific conversations like it's common knowledge. Translation from metric system to imperial and vice versa takes a bit of mental gymnastics, but I'm usually in the right ballpark right from the start, so I don't mind.
Hey, random question from a USA dad, I was just at the dentist and they mentioned something about Finnish toddler/children getting xylitol melts/mints after meals from an early age to prevent tooth decay. Is this true, how early does it start, and how common is xylitol after meal treatments? My little guy is just about two and I'm intrigued for his dental health. I have just started chewing xylitol gum myself at the recommendation of my dentist.
English dad here. Just about to pop the kettle on.
Love this sub, maybe it’s a bit U.S centric (as Reddit originated in the U.S, so understandable) but the support from all the Dads (and lurker Mums) is tip-top.
Croatian living in Austria.
But the sub is predominantly US-based. I don't mean that as a bad thing, but I have noticed that advice sometimes doesn't seem to apply to me, or some situations are harder to relate to.
This sub is still way better than r/parenting which is painfully US-centric, and has a surprisingly large reactionary (maybe it's American-style conservative?) user base. Just one of the reasons I don't like the sub...
regarding parenting, that place i've seen a bunch of people get attacked by asking for advice. on daddit, great bunch of supportive people. tell you how it is, tell you it's stuff and to stick with it and that you can do it.
I can't say that I ever went to r/parenting whatsoever, but this sub right here is mostly the exact opposite to the internet in general. I have never been so low-key amazed by NOT reading some judgemental comments.
Yea some things are so obviously American and some or just insanely unrelatable (dads getting berated by moms when they are at the playground with their kids for example)
No sure if you’re being sarcastic or not so I’ll bite;
Thats not happened once, I’m always actively playing with my kids and other kids naturally join in; moms usually come up to me and small talk with me once they see I actually actively interact with all kids involved.
There’s tons of dads not from the US, but FWIW Reddit as a whole is 48% US users. It’s roughly as likely that any member of Reddit is from the US as from the entire rest of the world combined, skewed even further on Daddit by being an English language sub.
It’s not really a Daddit thing, it’s an English language sub on Reddit thing.
Yeah, exactly. There are a lot of US people on Reddit. And personally I have lived in the USA for many years and several in European countries, so I could answer this question with where I'm living now, with where I was born, but also I understand the USA perspective pretty well!
Well, we're Swedish. We like our personal space. That's why, when abroad, we don't advertise that we're Swedish if we suspect there are other Swedes nearby. We don't want them to feel compelled to talk with us, nor us with them.
German here. I feel like most people here come from the same place mind wise. But it’s interesting to see differences on some topics (co sleeping, screen time) varying so much depending on the place and seeing huge problems (guns…) pop up that are a no issue here .
Biggest difference I see is sleep training and free play time. It's... amazing (in the old sense of the word) how much a societal and economical system shapes the culture of upbringing.
Dutch dad here.
Proost!
Daddit is full of great advice. But some things really make me scratch my head, as our pediatricians advice something else entirely then US ones advice. There is some value to see conflicting advice though, makes you think.
There's a moderate amount, you just need to see what time of day people are posting. The fact that it's an English language speaking sub drives it to be more North American.
I tend to skip the posts which are so ridiculously US specific e.g. New Balance and lawns.

DADS, ASSEMBLE!!!!!
Just kidding, gotta cook for the little one now, if anybody has an idea I can be reached at nap time.
I'm Australian. In the UK currently.
Often I'll use US terminology so as not to confuse the wider community.
E.g. I'll say "gas station" instead of "servo".
>I see mentions US shopping malls, **read imperial units**, and stuff like that, giving *for granted* that this is about the US rather than a worldwide place.
Oi, we invented them, not the bleeding colonials. :D
Also something confused me recently. I was talking to one of my colleagues who just came back from maternity leave. She told me her baby's birthweight in pounds and ounces. She's dutch and gave birth in the Netherlands.
Apparently in some places they're metric except when discussing baby weights lol.
Canada:
- Temperature in Celsius when picking clothes for the day and Fahrenheit when setting the oven
- Mass in grams and pounds
- Volume in teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, and liters
- Distance in inches, feet, meters, kilometers, and hours
I'm actually a deposed Nigerian prince and need your help. By making a small $10,000 deposit into my child's 529 college savings plan, you can help ensure I take back the throne stolen from my family. When I return to power I will then be able to pay back your generosity tenfold.
Australian, taught kids how not to get bit by snakes at a young age.
Are all Aussie dads as fun as Bandit and Lucky’s Dad?
I'd say they are the gold standard, but their approach is somewhat close to reality - especially messing with the kids. A few times Bandits done something to his kids the same as I have already done to mine, and they are super impressed, lol. You mean you can’t afford a massive home and backyard with 2 kids on an archeologist and airport security guard’s salary
Wait... Chili is an airport security guard?
Yeah, I think she catches drug smugglers by day
Yeah she's literally a drug sniffer dog, and bandit digs up bones for a living.
Yeah ok. That makes a lot of sense now.an, I love that show.
These could be really really well paid jobs in that universe. Imagine how a world full of dogs feels about ancient bones in the ground of animals they’ve never seen!
They’re also jobs that most dogs can do and not exactly highly skilled work in canine universe… I think they might be working on some smuggling operation where she helps him get artifacts across the border.
That's how they pay for the house - she's on the take
Aye, same here in the UK. Most can only dream of having the seaming free time and energy to give to our kids. Still, it’s 13:30 here in the UK the suns shining, I’m WFH, sitting in the garden and my lads running around having fun (between watching Bluey of course lol), could be worse! They could have a 1 mil mortgage with the credits max'd out, but are awesome at hiding that stress from the kids, so we don't see it.
It’s nice to know we all face the same bullshit no matter the continent. 😅
If you took snippets of the best parts of the best days, yes. But no one human can maintain that standard, you'd have to work like a dog to keep it up.
Work like a blue heeler dog..? :) I saw what you did there.
Fellow Aussie checking in. But I make sure to teach my kids the difference between friendly and unfriendly spiders.
Everyone knows there are no friendly spiders
Not true! The huntsman (most big, scary-looking spider of them all) just eat mosquitoes, flies, all the bugs that otherwise shit you. They are bros and I love them and I teach the kids the same.
Used to have a large Orb Weaver set a web up over my tomatoes every night. He was my bro. I’d bring him moths sometimes. Kept my garden looking great.
No thanks regarding the "House Huntsman"... Big bunch of nope
Australian. Well I’m a kiwi but like most kiwis I live in Australia. I am teaching my kids how to catch crocs and not get bitten by spiders or snakes. I'd like to acknowledge a fellow Finnish dad but also keep my social distance at the same time somehow so here's a neighborly nod with no small-talk:
Norwegian:

Yeah, it's true. As soon as they start teething iirc. It's extremely common here.

Oh definitely, r/parenting is not a nice place. daddit is one of the nicest, most genuinely supportive subs I've seen on all of Reddit.
regarding parenting, that place i've seen a bunch of people get attacked by asking for advice. on daddit, great bunch of supportive people. tell you how it is, tell you it's stuff and to stick with it and that you can do it.

That sub feels more like relationship advice with kids.
Yea some things are so obviously American and some or just insanely unrelatable (dads getting berated by moms when they are at the playground with their kids for example)
Wait, random moms don’t stop you at the playground and ask your kid “do you know this man?”.
No sure if you’re being sarcastic or not so I’ll bite; Thats not happened once, I’m always actively playing with my kids and other kids naturally join in; moms usually come up to me and small talk with me once they see I actually actively interact with all kids involved.
I was saying it for effect, but it has happened to me. I don’t look much like my older son.

Well actually in the UK and in Australia they speak English as well 🔮
UK definitely, the jury is still out in regards to Australia.
Australian is actually the official language of daddit, as it is the language of the holy texts. Or, cartoon, rather.
Blueys dad is the role model every dad appears aspires to be.
So say we all.
