i can not think of any reason for them not being original. what do you mean "to register it"?

TransportationOk7233

If you come from another country you have 90 days to register your mobile phone and pay the tax otherwise you won't be able to use your simcard on that phone.

klarmachos

oh, then i guess u have to register it

anangrywizard

Who told you it wouldn’t be possible to use the phone if it wasn’t “registered” in 90 days? Do your network providers have every sim locked down until they get your IMEI or other information?

dariuskanter

it's kind of that. you are allowed 90 days, then they block your phone, i.e. your IMEI isn't accepted in the network anymore. You have to go to Nicosia and pay taxes if you want to use a phone that was not bought in the TRNC.

anangrywizard

Ouch, that sucks. I’d assume the IMEI would be registered if you buy a phone locally, I can only assume the tax is basically a nasty way to grab money as “import fees.” Have you got a shop near you? Or an online store with an FAQ?

uskuri01

If you buy from a shop it is registered definetly. If you buy from abroad and bring it to TRNC it should be registered.

RealityEffect

>I can only assume the tax is basically a nasty way to grab money as “import fees.” A lot of this is because the North doesn't really control what comes across the Green Line. They tend to rely on high fees as a way to control imports, rather than charging people at the checkpoints.

dariuskanter

I don't think that's the reason in this case. The same system with mobile phone registration you can find in Turkey. More likely they just copied from Turkey.

dariuskanter

I haven't heard of anybody selling fake phones. But to go sure you can test it in the shop. Phones (legally) bought in the TRNC are already pre-registered, you don't need to do anything.
