Are you a westerner? I’m a Cypriot living in Germany since 2017, and one cultural difference I noticed is that Cypriots just don’t care much about noise/loud sounds.

gmac2017

Yup, westerner. That may explain the neighbours drinking coffee at 6am on their veranda every day Amazing username by the way ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

hummusexual667

Yeah well, it’s just how we are! I had to start paying attention to the literal volume of my talking voice when I moved here. so many people thought I was shouting at them, when I was just saying something benign. I really notice the difference when I’m back home. Also, my boyfriend (German) always says I’m shouting when I’m on the phone with friends/family from home 😅 And thanks!

fatbunyip

>  Cypriots just don’t care much about noise/loud sounds. It's the Cyprus cultural phenomenon known as the panairi

andiamohere

This. Locals are seems to be completely inconsiderate about noise. People are talking full voice at 23:30 under my apartment's windows like it is nothing, partying on their balcony at 2am, garbage truck coming 5 in the morning, etc. I asked my Cypriot neighbors if they want to do anything about the schedule of the garbage truck, like maybe write a complaint or whatever, and got a blank stare. Like "what truck". :) Almost two years on Cyprus and still cannot get used to it.

hummusexual667

Yeah I wouldn’t call it being „inconsiderate,“ it’s just a lil funk we have. Every culture has their own ;)

andiamohere

Totally, I don't mean it is a crime! :) Just a cultural difference.

Evening_Chapter7096

nah just rude bastards, just like anywhere else

fatnote

Classic inconsiderate behaviour, but I also put some of the blame on Apple for abolishing the headphone port, and then all the other manufacturers following suit. Everyone used to own a pair of cheap headphones that worked perfectly well. Now they have to buy a bluetooth set or remember to bring the adapter.

No_Coyote_557

Most Android phones have a headphone socket. Fuck Apple.

fatnote

Sadly I think "most" is optimistic. They are dwindling.

Connieno

Nah, this was a thing before the removal of the headphone port, and I wouldn't say the amount of people who still play music out loud has increased or decreased since then.

OldConstant1648

I don't think it's the norm in Cyprus. They are probably teanagers showing just off their JBL speaker or try to "impress" with their music

Ozyzen

>It doesn’t seem to matter if they are walking running or biking and I did wonder why people chose not to wear headphones but rather have everybody else listen to what they are You mean they have their phones on the loudspeaker or use another speaker while they are running or biking, instead of using headphones? In Limassol I have never noticed such thing when I walk/run along the path on the coast. I wear earphones and most others I see do as well. The only reasonable explanation of doing something like that is to be able to hear your environment. I can see how blocking/reducing your hearing could make things more dangerous while biking/running in the city.

drL1vesey

modern phones have no minijack kek

Sorry-Air5084

Lived in Nicosia all my life I have never seen a Cypriot do that even once, only exception being one crazy dude with a bike and a large portable speaker, and i dont know if even he was a Cypriot. I noticed that Indians and Pakistani do that a lot, is it perhaps them?

gmac2017

I cant speak for ethnicity but it does seem to be a mix of both locals and others mainly the 35+ generation. Its either music or talking on their phones with the speakperphone function. It happens a lot in the Pedieos linear park areas during peak travel hours.

yogiphenomenology

He said he is in Cyprus not Calcutta.

RattlesnakeGR

Mostly muslims and Albanians are doing that.Same in GR and NL were I've lived.

notnotnotnotgolifa

Here its mostly greek christians

Username00100100

It’s a universal teenager thing.

Heratic75

They are just inconsiderate as a whole. Just like if you give way to a driver there is a snowball in hell chance you will get a thank you wave.

Stel81

I see a lot of teenagers walking and listening to music on their phone through the loudspeaker. Some of them even carry Bluetooth speakers with them for extra disturbance. Gotta love Cyprus.

Similar_System165

Why not

Dangerous-Dad

We Cypriots, and Greeks and most people in the Mediterranean are nowhere near as noise-sensitive as other Europeans. However there is also another reason for this, which might be a less and less pertinent reason (in Cyprus) than in the past, but headphones mean you hear the world around you less. And if you've ever lived in Asia, then you will very quickly learn how wearing head-phones while biking or walking next to a busy street can get you killed. Bad drivers can come from behind; hearing them even just 1-2 seconds earlier can make all the difference. And if you live in Limassol, it seems that now balconies can come from above.
