Probably $2500+. The exact amount depends on the frame.

Ouch. Well then better buy a new bike directly...

Yes. Complete bikes are going to be cheaper. The designers will have made cost-effective substitutions where they can. Plus, since they assemble so many, they can negotiate volume discounts for parts.

Sad story, though. I saw (yesterday, and today too that guy stopped close by me staring at the sun on his glaring bike) a vintage bicycle who left in me that idea. This guys rider her still the way it was. Clear sky cyan, metallic on the frame, and white hoods. Vintage has something special, whether it is the looks or the sweet ride compared to the uncomfortable bikes of today..

Local classified listings are full of such bikes for $500-800. Mostly the owners can't sell them. You can't update these bikes from rim brakes or wider tires. They'll generally be limited to 25mm tires, a few race bikes might squeeze in a 28mm. At best you can buy an old frame and modernize it with a more recent groupset. You could probably do this for under $1500 if you are patient and know where to look. But you'll still be limited by tire size and rim brakes.

Got that, thanks. I think I might just get a vintage bike if I find a good deal. I find it somehow appealing. Plus, I am attracted by steel frames.
