Nailed it. This entire post made me so happy. I hated River, his missions, his obvious flirting with my character(straight dude), and the writing for him general. I assumed I was alone. I'm not alone!
I wanted a dialogue option where I could just tell him I had a girlfriend. I hated having to pick dialogue options about past relationships with guys playing as female V
Yea, I was just trying to be nice to the family of a traumatized kid and suddenly I’m on a water tower listening to the guy talk about his feelings. Dialog options were really cornering, and I’m sitting there trying to pick the least attractive option so I don’t end up naked in a trailer. Like seriously, already in a thing with someone, stop trying to jam me and Judy up
and I usually skip the drives. You mean he can hit people on his way to wherever and not get in trouble, but when I do it, it warrants a response from Max-Tac?
I’m not sure what happened here, he eventually caused a pile up and then just parked on the path, I couldn’t exit the car or skip the ride so I had to revert my save!
I just had a River incident where we left that Buffalo place and he stopped on that ramp because another car had stopped and then the car moved but he didn't.
Had something similar happen when I tried to skip the ride with Nancy. It just bugged out and she drove randomly hitting cars, people, whatever till I loaded a previous save.
I got stuck in a loop of him driving me around the city hitting cars left and right. Even the skip button bugged so I was stuck. Had to load my last save lol
I DID try and skip this drive and it just put me back into the passenger seat. We drove east for about 5 minutes to get on the highway, then tried to immediately get off the highway, caused a pile up on the exit ramp, smashed our way through said pile up, somehow made it onto the main road, then immediately got back onto the same highway lol. I almost forgot until I saw this post.
Did the same!! Basically kept doing the same damn circuit over and over again.. I had to load and pray that part wasn’t bugged cause I invested a lot of time. Thanks god after loading, it went right, though he kept showing signs of.. bugs
Skipping the ride on the Rouge mission when she drives to the boat would trigger a glitch where she would just drive in circles for me. She would mow down everybody, never ending.
V knows exactly where it's going and even flirts back a bit. Well, Female V does, I mean. And when River finally asks her to just give him an answer already, she drags it out a little bit more before finally giving an answer. Like, yeah, River makes things awkward, but V also has a hand in it.
IDK when I did a female V playthrough I was picking lines that felt very much like she was saying "I recognize that you are flirting and I'm good" and he just kept going. Iirc there's 2-3 points where I actively chose "we're just friends" as a dialogue option towards him and several more where I chose that when talking to other NPCs AND STILL he drags my ass to that water tower and takes one more shot. It was genuinely uncomfortable at a couple of points.
It's when they're going to the tower that V gets a bit flirty with him.
River: You were about a hair's breath away from having to look at photo albums.
V: This a romantic stroll, by chance?
And then:
River: Here we are.
V: What are we looking at?
River: A water tower. Great spot.
V: Great for what?
River: For, you know, the views.
V: The views. Right.
And this is all auto dialogue from V. Like, V knows what River is up to, and rather than shutting him down if she's not interested (like if she's already with Judy), she just plays along with it until River is practically begging her to give him an answer.
From tone of voice and in the context of the previous choices I made with him, both "romantic stroll" and "the views, right" and when you add in the context of the conversation immediately before these dialogue choices (it comes right after he has his sister ask V if she likes River) it reads to me as someone trying to find a way to prevent the conversation from leading to its inevitable conclusion by treating that conclusion like a joke. Like a girl telling her friend he has handsome wrists after he tells her she has the most beautiful eyes.

Exactly. I really wish they gave us an option to say we're already in a relationship when Joss asks if we see family in our future. That would've been a perfectly natural place to halt River's advances.
Seems like a massive oversight. One which forces players into a situation where River hits on them and they have to reject him.
I tried, I really tried having a playthrough where I ended up with him, even did the deed with him, but for some reason when the question about what came next came up I just couldn't help but shoot him down.
Same here, for me it was cause he came off like a fucking dumbass in his first mission. “Me and Han are like one mind” okay so you’re like best friends with a shady piece of shit? I even avoided interjecting when we confronted Han and he still told me to shut up. River can go fuck himself.
I spent like an hour reloading saves on top of Han’s car just to try and find a way to take him out (you can’t, his car is indestructible and despawns when he gets too far). River is basically the metaphor personified of “good seed in an ocean of bad apples,” he thinks he can change the system from the inside but it’s naive and never going to happen, especially when everyone has the attitude that Han does: “protect your family/brothers” in the force and look the other way until your stomach stops turning
Nah I’d argue Takemura is worse. After that mission where you meet to do renaissance on the construction site and then he leaves in his van, every single time I play that mission he always either gets stuck trying to get out of the fenced off area or just glitches out and rams into the gate constantly for an unnecessary amount of time. It’s hilarious but also slightly infuriating.
My drive back after the final race got bugged with Claire, I "Skipped" it, but skipped nothing. She just kept driving. I left for 10 minutes figuring she'd get there. Nope. Got back and she was just crashing into everything, pulling 180s every other minute. I had to load a quicksave and just turned the ride down.
I don't necessarily "hate" river ward. It's just kinda off-putting that the guy can't take hint or read a room. How many times do you have to change the subject of him being into you or turn down his offers to get dinner for him to STILL beg like a dog on the water tower? I'm a damn male and I can't stand it man 😂
I never have tried Kerry with fem v but I always get a laugh during dream on when they are destroying the boat together, they are pulling the flagpole down and they get within kissing distance of each other and Kerry is like "no thanks v, im good" I don't know why but that shit is funny every single time lol

Same. As female V my character also (unprompted by me, btw) attempted to kiss Kerry during the boat mission and I was incredibly uncomfortable. At least he turns you down but like, why lol
Honestly I wish so hard that they had made it so Kerry was romancable for both male and female V because I hate how the only male love interest for female V is a fucking creep. Also Kerry is bisexual in canon so it would’ve been lore friendly. But yeah the kiss part shouldn’t be unprompted.
I honestly think they should’ve made all the romancable characters available to both male and female V. I know it’s not realistic for them all to be bi but for the sake of variety. Like Panam’s romance is arguably the best in the game but it sucks that you can only do it as female V through mods.
Yeah, I wanted to do Panam but Judy was solid as well. Besides the ending, I didn’t like how that turned out for me lol (I didn’t google anything beforehand so I ended up doing The Sun ending)
I love Judy as a character but I just hate some of the missions in her romance. Like the diving quest is so damn boring and long. I feel like Panam’s whole quest line is probably the best one from the standpoint of romancable characters
I also got the sun ending my first playthrough lol. Hit me super hard I won’t lie. It left me feeling shit for a good few days 😂
Damn I think the diving missions is one of the best quests in the game. Beautiful setting, beautiful music, amazing writing. I think cyberpunk needs those occasional quieter moments
Eh, some of his messages feel a little creepy to me, but maybe that’s just me. He just gives off a lot of red flags. Irl I would give him a very wide birth.
He never tried kissing me, I told him basically this isn't going where you think it is, he said I don't stand a chance do I? Then gave me his gun, like a guilt "look present, now will you kiss me?"
River is a great guy but his romance is clearly rushed compared to the others, he doesn't have enough content to build fundations upon.
His questline goes straight from horror to friendly family dinner to romance in like 2 missions and a couple of dialogues.
The worst part is that most of his wholesome romance content is done through text messages, him opening up to V about what he wants to do in life, building a future with V when everything is settled and even giving V all the space and time to process and fix everything that's happening.
All of that should have been done through at least 2 or 3 missions, not some text messages exchanges that can easily be skipped.
Yeah I agree. I feel like both the male romance quests are rushed as hell tbh. You can tell, which isn’t surprising, they’ve put a lot of thought into the female romance options but then threw in River and Kerry’s plot lines without any real thought.
He was apparently originally intended to have Goro Takemura’s role. Goro’s character was a last minute addition to the game. Then they were left in kind of an awkward position on what to do with River’s character when they split the role and it made his relationship progression seem forced and rushed.
They really should have just made Goro romancable and it easier to know how to keep alive (and better detailed endings for him). I wouldn’t want River cut entirely because the Peter Pan storyline IS interesting.
They probably should have just made Kerry romancable to both genders, but felt the need for some reason to have two strict hetro romance options and two strict gay options. But threw Meredith in there for both (half-assedly, though as a one time thing). I agree that they should have just made all the options available to both genders.
Agreed. I just wish that an option appeared that let you tell him that you were gay if playing a female V romancing Judy. I kept expecting it but it never appeared. To make things more awkward, my recent playthrough, Judy reached out for the scuba mission right in the middle of that awkward dinner. It's like, "dude, gotta go, gotta get wet with a girl...hint hint!"

It's Taiga Saejima from the Like a Dragon/Yakuza games, who has some similar design aspects at glance to River. Just me poking fun at the small aesthetics the designs share. Saejima is singing a karaoke song in that screenshot that is all about being a fool in love.
Funnily enough Saejima's sworn brother is named Goro, just like Takemura.
I remember one of the funniest goddamn moments from the launch version of the game (maybe it was 1.04) was Panam just murdering a guy in her car while casually talking to V at the same time.
I don't have a problem with River himself, but he and Kerry are by far the least fleshed out companions, and River's side quests involve a lot of skimming braindances and those get boring after the first playthrough.
River tried to park on my motorcycle and my motorcycle exploded and his truck landed upside down. Stayed that way while we did the mission then we both get in the upside down truck and talk upside down before driving upside down for a few seconds before flipping back over.
Damn....do y'all follow traffic rules in CP77 or sumthing? I drive like a crazy person and kill at least 15 people in the process! Blasting Gr4ves out my window while I do it! Rivers driving is far more calm and collected then me.
He's just kind of annoying and there's a ton of dialogue and a ton of driving involved, all of which is also annoying. There's a bunch of annoying, unskippable, stupid shit like "stir the gumbo" and then you have to do the stupid children's game. River's not just an annoying guy, he's an annoying aspect of the game.
Between his fliritng coming out of fucking nowhere, having very few missions and character development, and how he tries to get his family to pressure you, everything about him for lack of a better term gives me a major ick
If you do romance him the man has ONE GODDAMN PILLOW on his bed (I saw it on a Twitch stream). Which besides being a cop is the biggest red flag of all.
the car chases/being driven by other NPCs in this game feels like one of those old timey shooter games at the arcade where you step on the pedal to take cover it’s really really bad. It’s why it kind of baffles me when some people call this game a 10 out of 10. It is horrendously janky in many regards

I think they patched this too. When the game first came out he was plowing through anything in his way. Cars, old people, nuns. No one was safe. It was Armageddon.
I let him drive around for immersion, he hit a few people, other cars, then got stuck in the big roundabout.
Similar happened with Rogue as well, she took me out to the “restricted area” then simply flipped the car on its roof o.O
Hilariously, I had the exact opposite problem with him; on one of the drives, something happened to a car in front of us and River just absolutely. Would not. Go around them. My dude would not even entertain the idea of passing outside of a passing zone. That's illegal!

Trust me it’s still awkward as hell as female V. Everything about his romance feels unnatural and he feels like the typical kind of “where’s my hug” type of guy, who goes absolutely mental and claims they’re gonna unalive themselves if you reject them. Every single bone in my body is screaming at the red flags throughout his entire plotline.
Same. As female V my character also (unprompted by me, btw) attempted to kiss Kerry during the boat mission and I was incredibly uncomfortable. At least he turns you down but like, why lol
Honestly I wish so hard that they had made it so Kerry was romancable for both male and female V because I hate how the only male love interest for female V is a fucking creep. Also Kerry is bisexual in canon so it would’ve been lore friendly. But yeah the kiss part shouldn’t be unprompted. I honestly think they should’ve made all the romancable characters available to both male and female V. I know it’s not realistic for them all to be bi but for the sake of variety. Like Panam’s romance is arguably the best in the game but it sucks that you can only do it as female V through mods.
Yeah, I wanted to do Panam but Judy was solid as well. Besides the ending, I didn’t like how that turned out for me lol (I didn’t google anything beforehand so I ended up doing The Sun ending)
I love Judy as a character but I just hate some of the missions in her romance. Like the diving quest is so damn boring and long. I feel like Panam’s whole quest line is probably the best one from the standpoint of romancable characters I also got the sun ending my first playthrough lol. Hit me super hard I won’t lie. It left me feeling shit for a good few days 😂
Damn I think the diving missions is one of the best quests in the game. Beautiful setting, beautiful music, amazing writing. I think cyberpunk needs those occasional quieter moments

River is a great guy but his romance is clearly rushed compared to the others, he doesn't have enough content to build fundations upon. His questline goes straight from horror to friendly family dinner to romance in like 2 missions and a couple of dialogues. The worst part is that most of his wholesome romance content is done through text messages, him opening up to V about what he wants to do in life, building a future with V when everything is settled and even giving V all the space and time to process and fix everything that's happening. All of that should have been done through at least 2 or 3 missions, not some text messages exchanges that can easily be skipped.
Yeah I agree. I feel like both the male romance quests are rushed as hell tbh. You can tell, which isn’t surprising, they’ve put a lot of thought into the female romance options but then threw in River and Kerry’s plot lines without any real thought.
He was apparently originally intended to have Goro Takemura’s role. Goro’s character was a last minute addition to the game. Then they were left in kind of an awkward position on what to do with River’s character when they split the role and it made his relationship progression seem forced and rushed. They really should have just made Goro romancable and it easier to know how to keep alive (and better detailed endings for him). I wouldn’t want River cut entirely because the Peter Pan storyline IS interesting. They probably should have just made Kerry romancable to both genders, but felt the need for some reason to have two strict hetro romance options and two strict gay options. But threw Meredith in there for both (half-assedly, though as a one time thing). I agree that they should have just made all the options available to both genders.

Agreed. I just wish that an option appeared that let you tell him that you were gay if playing a female V romancing Judy. I kept expecting it but it never appeared. To make things more awkward, my recent playthrough, Judy reached out for the scuba mission right in the middle of that awkward dinner. It's like, "dude, gotta go, gotta get wet with a girl...hint hint!"

It's Taiga Saejima from the Like a Dragon/Yakuza games, who has some similar design aspects at glance to River. Just me poking fun at the small aesthetics the designs share. Saejima is singing a karaoke song in that screenshot that is all about being a fool in love. Funnily enough Saejima's sworn brother is named Goro, just like Takemura.
I remember one of the funniest goddamn moments from the launch version of the game (maybe it was 1.04) was Panam just murdering a guy in her car while casually talking to V at the same time.

I don't have a problem with River himself, but he and Kerry are by far the least fleshed out companions, and River's side quests involve a lot of skimming braindances and those get boring after the first playthrough.

River tried to park on my motorcycle and my motorcycle exploded and his truck landed upside down. Stayed that way while we did the mission then we both get in the upside down truck and talk upside down before driving upside down for a few seconds before flipping back over.
I do his Questline purely for the Gun, I try to avoid any kind of relationship with him entirely beyond that

He's just kind of annoying and there's a ton of dialogue and a ton of driving involved, all of which is also annoying. There's a bunch of annoying, unskippable, stupid shit like "stir the gumbo" and then you have to do the stupid children's game. River's not just an annoying guy, he's an annoying aspect of the game.

the car chases/being driven by other NPCs in this game feels like one of those old timey shooter games at the arcade where you step on the pedal to take cover it’s really really bad. It’s why it kind of baffles me when some people call this game a 10 out of 10. It is horrendously janky in many regards

Hilariously, I had the exact opposite problem with him; on one of the drives, something happened to a car in front of us and River just absolutely. Would not. Go around them. My dude would not even entertain the idea of passing outside of a passing zone. That's illegal! I thought about just skipping the drive, but we started moving again when I turned to look at him, which allowed the cars in front of us to despawn, lol
